Season Outlook

5www.smcathletics.com

The 2010 Saint Michael’s College women’s soccer team looksa lot like the 2009 squad - literally. With 21 of the program’s 23players from 2009 back this fall, the Purple Knights are a veteranunit that, under the leadership of 12th-year head coach MarcelChoquette, has the potential to reach the Northeast-10Conference Tournament.

SeniorsThe Purple Knights will rely heavily upon their four seniors,

all of whom have been with the programthe last three seasons.

Up top, Jenn Senecal is one of theleague’s quickest strikers. She tied for theteam lead with four goals and nine pointsin 2009, and could do so again this fall.

Katie Murphy, meanwhile, is one ofthe league’s tallest and strongest midfield-ers. Snakebit last season, Murphy looks tostay healthy and, if so, is poised for a big2010.

Also expected to start in the midfieldthis fall is Liz Freiberger. Despite a scor-ing slump in 2009, Freiberger has thepotential to contribute offensively in herfinal season.

Rounding out the senior quartet isMary Diebold. A smart and athleticdefender, Diebold is expected to playnearly every minute in the backfield thisfall, and will often mark the opposition’sbest forward.

JuniorsSaint Michael’s nine juniors forms the

nucleus of the team, and is vital to the squad’s success.A top scorer for the Purple Knights the last two seasons,

Laura Ostrout hopes to continue to find the back of the net in2010. She has tallied 10 goals halfway through her collegiatecareer.

Teal Bryan has also shown offensive prowess the last twoyears, and enters her junior campaign with eight career goals. Shejoins Murphy and Freiberger in a veteran starting midfield.

On defense, Mary Catanzarita has been a starter each ofher first two seasons, and that shouldn’t change this fall as well.Like Diebold, she should be on the field nearly 100% of the time.

Also expected to move into a starting role this fall is AnnieO’Gorman. She played in all 18 games last fall, and can con-tribute both in the midfield and on defense.

Off the bench, Kristen Hagenbarth can provide instantoffense. She performed well in her first year with Saint Michael’sin 2009, and has the ability to score several goals this fall. EleniKustas, meanwhile, gives the squad depth at midfield, and hasappeared in six games each of her first two seasons.

Completing the class are theteam’s three goalkeepers.Ashleigh Adams and BrittanyCocozza split time in 2009, withAdams playing approximately 75percent of the time. That ratiomay move closer to an even splitin 2010. Mary Farnsworth, meanwhile, rounds out the net-minding trio, and will push for

p l a y i n gtime.

SophomoresEight sophomores - all of whom con-

tributed as first-years in 2009 - look tomake the next step this season.

Heading the list is Megan Olsen. AnNE-10 All-Rookie selection in 2009,Olsen is a tall and athletic midfielder thathas the potential to earn All-Conferencehonors again this year.

Expected to move into a starting rolein 2010 is Jessica White. She played injust five games last fall, but has improvedconsiderably since the end of her first sea-son.

Cassie Crockett, like Hagenbarth, will be expected to provide the squad withscoring punch off the bench. She did that

as a first-year, scoring the game-winner at Saint Anselm. Two other sophomores with the potential to score off the

bench are Janet Bazzell and Ali Lajoie. Kelly O’Brien andShannon Doherty, meanwhile, should see playing time off thebench in the backfield. Natalie Zimmer, meanwhile, is battlingback from a lower body injury.

FreshmanWith so much veteran experience for Saint Michael’s in 2010,

the team’s four first-years should see limited playing time in areserve capacity.

Three midfielders that give significant depth to the positionfor the Purple Knights are Katie Butler, Jordyn Mallett, andStorie Umscheid. All three have the potential to move into astarting role in 2011.

On defense, Joanna Lawlor has the speed and athleticism toearn playing time in a crowded backfield.

Senior Katie Murphy, despite battling sever-al injuries, played every game in the mid-field last year, including 16 starts.
