This is the Mountain WestFrom its inception in 1999, the Mountain

West Conference has been committed to excel-lence in intercollegiate athletics, while promot-ing the academic missions of its memberinstitutions. Progressive in its approach, theMWC continues to cultivate opportunities forstudent-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement andsportsmanship. Now in its 12th year, the MWChas been assertive in its involvement with theNCAA governance structure and has taken aleadership role in the overall administration ofintercollegiate athletics.

The Mountain West Conference has markedseveral achievements over its first 11 years of ex-istence, most notably becoming the first to es-tablish a sports television network dedicatedsolely to an intercollegiate athletic conference(The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was thefirst to experiment with the coaches challengein the college football instant replay system, andwas the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS con-ference to participate in and win two BCS bowlgames. Additionally, the Mountain West was thefirst conference to have a member institutionwith No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL andNBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smithand Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). WithSan Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming theNo. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the MountainWest is one of two conferences to have the No.1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLBdrafts since the MWC was founded in 1999. TheMountain West also ranks second in No. 1 draftpicks in the NFL, NBA and MLB over the last sixyears with three overall.

The Mountain West Conference is noted forits geographic diversity. Some of the most beau-tiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can befound within Mountain West Conferenceboundaries, including the majestic Rocky Moun-tain range, which borders four MWC schools(Air Force, BYU, Colorado State and Utah). Thehigh plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet –the highest Division I campus in the nation) con-trast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastestgrowing metropolitan area in the West) and thePacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. Thesouthwestern flavor of New Mexico comple-ments the western heritage and culture of Fort

Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s most recentmember, TCU.

HistoryThe Mountain West Conference was con-

ceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents ofeight institutions — Air Force, BYU, ColoradoState, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV,Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a newNCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic con-ference. The split from the former 16-team con-ference re-established continuity and stabilityamong the membership within the new leagueand signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of theMWC’s eight original members have been con-ference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, NewMexico, Wyoming, Colorado State), while SanDiego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) werelongtime members as well. UNLV and TCU en-tered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continuedas one of the original eight institutions thatformed the MWC in 1999. TCU rejoined thegroup with its first year of competition in theMountain West in 2005-06. On June 17, 2010,Commissioner Craig Thompson announced theaddition of Boise State University to the Moun-tain West Conference, effective July 1, 2011.

When the MWC officially began operationson July 1, 1999, the new league had in place aseven-year contract with ESPN, giving thebroadcaster exclusive national television rightsto MWC football and men’s basketball, andthree-year agreements to send the league’s foot-ball champions to the Liberty and Las VegasBowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson alsoarranged a third bowl tie-in each of the firstthree years (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Val-ley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emerald Bowl in SanFrancisco in 2002. Entering the 2011 season, theMWC has five contracted bowl affiliations – theMAACO Bowl Las Vegas, San Diego CountryCredit Union Poinsettia Bowl, AdvoCare V100Independence Bowl, Bell Helicopter ArmedForces Bowl and New Mexico Bowl.

TCU’s No. 4 BCS ranking earned itan automatic bid into a BCS game and markedthe highest finish by a non-automatic-qualify-ing team in the final BCS Standings, surpassingUtah’s No. 6 ranking in both 2004 and 2008. TheHorned Frogs’ appearance in the Fiesta Bowlmarked the MWC’s third BCS bowl game since2004.

A league-record four men’s basketball teamsrepresented the Mountain West in the 2010NCAA Tournament, marking the 10th time inthe last 11 years the Conference has sent multi-ple teams to the Big Dance. ACADEMIC SUPPORT

t t t AZTEC SOCCER u u u8

The dual role of student and athlete can bea daunting challenge for any person at theDivision I level. Recognizing that aca-

demic challenge, the Student Athlete AcademicSupport Services (SAASS) program has been de-veloped at San Diego State to assist all student-athletes in achieving academic excellence.

It is a source of pride within San Diego Stateathletics that the department has developed oneof the most comprehensive academic supportprograms in the country.

The StaffThe SAASS staff includes a learning specialist,

four academic advisors, the department’s direc-tor of compliance, an eligibility coordinator, a fi-nancial aid coordinator as well as a recruitmentcoordinator.

In addition to the full-time staff, the depart-ment employs more than 20 mentors and tutors.

Collectively, they operate a program that en-hances each student’s satisfactory progress to-ward graduation.

The ServicesThroughout the academic year, advisors offer

a variety of services to aid individuals in the de-velopment of their personal goals and the blue-print for pursuing those goals.

All new student-athletes are invited to an ori-entation that helps lay the foundation for futuresuccesses. Each advisor teaches a section of theUniversity’s Freshman Success course (GeneralStudies 100), which deals with specific transitionissues for student-athletes. Topics include timemanagement, study skills and test taking. In ad-dition, the course also introduces new studentsto services such as the Love Library, UniversityAdvising Center, Career Services, Health Serv-ices and the counseling center.

The ResourcesIn the fall of 2001, the academic unit joined

the rest of the athletic department in movinginto the $30 million, 130,000-square-foot AztecAthletics Center. The academic staff is locatedon the third floor of the complex and includes anew 40-station computer lab, individual studyrooms and two lecture rooms.

The CommitmentSan Diego State’s annual Scholar-Athlete

Awards Banquet honors students with a grade-point average in excess of 3.2. In 2010, 246 stu-dent-athletes, more than one-third of the SDSUstudent-athlete body, were honored at theScholar-Athlete Awards Banquet and attended atheatrical production downtown.

A new event was launched in the spring of2005 with the inaugural Student-Athlete Advi-sory Committee (SAAC) Awards. SDSU’s stu-dent-athletes were treated to an awards banquetand ceremonies to recognize outstanding indi-vidual achievements throughout the athletic de-partment.

Life SkillsTo further increase the opportunities for suc-

cess, San Diego State is part of the NCAA’sCHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The curriculumof Aztec Pride (Promoting Responsibility, In-tegrity, Diversity, Education) offers a wide rangeof programs and activities that enhance the ed-ucational experience. Special emphasis is placedon the areas of personal development, commu-nity service and career development.

In conjunction with the Student Athlete Ad-visory Committee, the Life Skills Program rep-resents SDSU’s total commitment to enhancingthe quality of each student’s experience.

AZTEC FACILITIES

t t t AZTEC SOCCER u u u10

In addition to everything the Aztec Athletics Center has to offer, SanDiego State University has some of the finest athletic facilities west ofthe Mississippi River. On the south, the Aztec Athletics Center is buffered by the SDSU

Sports Deck, where San Diego State's track and field team, along with bothmen’s and women’s soccer squads compete.

On the north side, it is connected to Peterson Gym, the home of Aztecvolleyball.

The west exit of the building opens onto three 120-yard practice fields. One of the fields is natural grass and two utilize field-turf, providing SanDiego State daily options for its workouts.

All of SDSU's new facilities, including the athletics center, Cox Arena atAztec Bowl, Tony Gwynn Stadium and the SDSU Sports Deck, haveopened since 1997.

In spring 2005, San Diego State opened its new 12-court tennis complexcomplete with state-of-the art Plexicushion surfacing and a tennis opera-tions center. Also opening in 2005 was the softball team’s new stadium ad-jacent to Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The buildings are not just sparkling new, but they are already postsea-son tested. Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl (formerly Cox Arena), the 12,414-seat basketball facility, has twice served as a site for the NCAA Men'sBasketball Division I Championship (first and second rounds) as well asthe NCAA Women’s Volleyball Division I National Championship. InMarch 2006, Viejas Arena also played host to the McDonald’s High SchoolAll-American Basketball game. Additionally, Viejas Arena was one of 16sites to welcome the first and second rounds of the NCAA Women’s Bas-ketball Division I Championships in 2009.

The SDSU Sports Deck has already played host to the Mountain West

Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship and will be the site ofthe 2010 MWC Soccer Championship. Tony Gwynn Stadium was the siteof the Mountain West baseball tournament in 2001 and 2010, and theSDSU Softball Stadium played host to the 2005 Mountain West Confer-ence Softball Championship.

In the spring of 2007, the two-pool Aztec Aquaplex opened giving boththe Aztec water polo and swimming and diving programs a new on-cam-pus home. The new aquatics center served as the site for the Mountain Pa-cific Sports Federation Women’s Water Polo Championship in April of2008 and was the venue for the 2010 NCAA Women’s Water Polo Cham-pionships.

In addition to all of the postseason events San Diego State has playedhost to, the facilities have also been the home to multiple in-season events. The SDSU track and field squad, along with the baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball and water polo teams all put on their own multiple-team eventsthroughout the season. Every spring, professional football scouts andcoaches gather at and utilize the Aztec weight room and then move to thepractice fields for NFL Pro Timing Day to catch an up-close glimpse ofSDSU graduating football seniors.

Besides all of the school’s on-campus facilities, the San Diego State foot-ball team plays at Qualcomm Stadium, home of the National FootballLeague’s San Diego Chargers, in Mission Valley. Qualcomm Stadium is thehost of the Holiday and Poinsettia Bowls and was the home of Super BowlXXXVII in 2003.

“When there’s no room to build out...build up.” That’s the mantra of mod-ern-day engineers and contractors and is something San Diego State tookto heart when designing its soccer/track facility. The eight-year old, $13million SDSU Sports Deck sits atop the university’s newest two-story park-ing structure (PS 5). The facility is located at 55th Street and MontezumaAvenue at the site of the old Choc Sportsman Oval.

l The Sports Deck serves as the home for the men’s and women’s soccerprograms as well as the SDSU women’s track and field team. The trackteam competes on the Choc Sportsman Oval which surrounds the soc-cer field.

l The playing turf for soccer is a state-of-the-art natural grass surface witha built in automatic-drainage system. The facility features an all-weather track and was the site of the 2001 and 2007 Mountain WestConference Outdoor Track and Field Championship. It will also playhost to the 2010 MWC Soccer Championship.

l The stadium seats about 1,500 people. The facility includes an electronicmessage/scoreboard, which is utilized for both soccer and track events.Future plans call for the facility to be lighted for night contests andseating capacity to be increased.

l The first official NCAA event was held at the Sports Deck on Aug. 25,2000, when the Aztec women’s soccer team faced Mississippi in its sea-son opener. SDSU won that match, 2-1.

l The first men’s soccer contest at the site was held on Sept. 1, 2000, ver-sus Christian Heritage. SDSU took that match, 5-0, making the occasionthe facility’s first shutout.

l The facility was dedicated on Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, during a men’s andwomen’s soccer doubleheader.

N Dr. Stephen L. Weber

University President

Stephen L. Weber, the seventh president ofSDSU, provides dynamic leadership to an in-stitution that ranks among the largest in the

nation. Educated as a philosopher, Weber assumedhis administrative responsibilities at SDSU in July1996 and shortly afterward initiated a campus/com-

munity dialogue intended to set the course for the university’s future.Guided by this “Shared Vision,” SDSU has moved boldly ahead: rein-

forcing academic excellence, nurturing students, honoring diversity andsocial justice, carefully stewarding resources, and further developing globalprograms.

In the process, SDSU has become an increasingly popular and selectivechoice among college-bound students. For fall 2009, some 55,000 under-graduate applicants competed for approximately 7,000 vacancies. Not sur-prisingly, the overall academic quality of SDSU students is also rising. SATscores have risen approximately 20 points and high school GPA’s of in-coming first-time freshmen are now over 3.4.

In addition, alumni involvement and private financial support of theuniversity have never been stronger. Under Weber’s leadership, SDSU cre-ated The Campanile Foundation, the university fundraising auxiliary. SinceThe Campanile Foundation was established 10 years ago, SDSU has raisedapproximately $520 million, 250 percent more than in the previous 102-year history of the university.

SDSU is rapidly becoming one of the nation’s top urban research uni-versities, working for the diverse peoples of Southern California to addresssuch issues as health and human services, poverty, public safety, and artsand culture. Since 2006, SDSU has been ranked the No. 1 most productiveresearch university in the United States, among schools with 14 or fewerPh.D. programs, based on the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. Lastyear, faculty and staff of SDSU successfully competed for more than $133million in grants and contracts.

A champion of community involvement, Weber has been an advocatefor community service. SDSU has been active in K-12 school reform, ad-ministering three inner-city schools enrolling more than 5,000 mostly low-income, highly diverse students and pioneering an often-copied “Compactfor Success” working with California’s largest and most diverse secondaryschool district. SDSU has also worked closely with area business and in-dustry to pioneer programs such as Hospitality and Tourism Management,Bio/Pharmaceutical and Biodevice Development, Regulatory Affairs(biotech), and Global Entrepreneurship.

Leading by example, Weber is the past chair of the American Associa-tion of State Colleges and Universities Board of Directors, and co-chairedPartners for K-12 School Reform. He also serves on the board of gover-nors of The Peres Center for Peace and on the board of directors of theSan Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. He also is amember of the international advisory board for the Foundation for Chil-dren of the Californias.

Born in Boston, Weber is a graduate of Bowling Green with a B.A. inphilosophy. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Notre Dame in 1969and is the author of numerous articles on philosophy and higher education.

Weber’s many awards include an honorary degree from Beijing CapitalNormal University and distinguished alumnus at his alma mater, BowlingGreen. He was named among the 1997 Headliners of the Year by the SanDiego Press Club. Also in 1997, the San Diego Mediation Center honoredhim with its Peacemaker Award. In 1999, Weber received the ExecutiveDirector’s Award from the San Diego Education Association and the GoldKey Award from the San Diego Hospitality Association. He was recognizedas a Leader of Vision by the league of Women Voters of San Diego in 2000.But the award he values most is one he earned many years ago as Out-standing Humanities Professor at Maine.

Before coming to SDSU, Weber served as interim provost of the StateUniversity of New York (SUNY) system; he previously served seven yearsas president of the SUNY Oswego campus. Prior to that, he was vice pres-ident of academic affairs at St. Cloud State, dean of arts and sciences atFairfield University, and assistant to the president of Maine.

President Weber is married to Susan Keim Weber, who shares his en-thusiastic commitment to SDSU. They have two adult sons.

Jim SterkDirector of Athletics

Jim Sterk was announced as San Diego State Uni-versity's new Director of Intercollegiate Athlet-ics on February 10, 2010, by SDSU President

Stephen L. Weber.“I'm thrilled with this opportunity and looking for-ward to taking SDSU Athletics to the next level of

success," said Sterk. "We want to build a program that the University, thecommunity and all Aztecs fans can be proud of.”

Sterk was hired just in time to see the Aztecs experience the best seasonon the playing field and in the classroom, in school history.

In fact, in Sterk’s first 20 days on his new job, he watched the San DiegoState men’s and women’s basketball teams claim the Mountain West Con-ference tournament championships, watched both programs advance tothe NCAA Tournament, and was on site when the women’s program upsetTexas and West Virginia en route to advancing to the Sweet 16 for the firsttime in school history.

In 2009-10, SDSU set school records in the Learfield Directors’ Cup,which rewards overall athletic success, by having eight sports earn points. The Aztecs finished 65th out of all Division I schools nationally.

In addition, a school-record 246 individuals were honored as scholarstudent-athletes at the year-end banquet.

“Division I athletics is an important tradition at San Diego State and in-creasingly a big part of the SDSU student experience," said Sterk. "We aregoing to build on that tradition and reach out to students, staff, alumni andthe entire community.”

Sterk, 54, came to SDSU from Washington State University where heserved as athletic director since 2000. Prior to his hiring at WSU, he servedas AD at Portland State University from 1995 to 2000. He brings 24 yearsof experience in athletics administration performing a variety of roles. Hisappointment followed a national search.

Sterk also brings a solid reputation and the respect of his peers acrossthe country with WSU having been recognized in 2006 as the Division IAAthletic Directors' “Program of Excellence.”

Sterk oversaw a period of unparalleled succes at Washington State withhistoric accomplishments both on and off the field.

Over his last three years at WSU, 13 Cougar teams competed in NCAApostseason tournaments, including back-to-back trips to the NCAA tour-nament by the men’s basketball team (2007 and 2008), while women’srowing earned five NCAA championship bids, including a fourth-placefinish in 2006, the highest finish ever by a WSU women’s team in NCAAcompetition

Academically, the graduation rate for those student-athletes who ex-hausted their eligibility at WSU was 92 percent over the past 10 years, ranking WSU second in the Pac-10 to Stanford.

WSU student-athletes maintained a 3.01 average cumulative GPA in2008-09, and for 10 consecutive semesters, averaged at least a 3.00 cumu-lative GPA.

WSU Athletic Foundation membership doubled under Sterk, and an-nual gifts increased from just under $3 million in 2000 to more than $13million in 2008.

Sterk, during his tenure at WSU, served as chair of the Pac-10 AthleticDirectors committee and served on numerous other Pacific-10 Conferencecommittees. Sterk was also a member of the prestigious NCAA Champi-onship/Competition cabinet.

Sterk graduated from Western Washington University in 1980, wherehe earned four letters in football and one in basketball. He was creditedwith a school-record 164 tackles during the 1977 season, garnering first-team NAIA District I all-star accolades and was named team captain andMVP, helping the Vikings to the district championship game. On Feb. 6,2010, Sterk was inducted into Western Washington's Athletics Hall ofFame for his success in football.

Sterk received his master's degree in sports administration from OhioUniversity. His professional career has included positions at North Car-olina, Maine, Seattle Pacific, Tulane, and Portland State, the latter as di-rector of athletics for five years before joining the Washington State staff.

Sterk and his wife Debra have three children: Ashley (21), Amy (18),and Abby (15).

San Diego State’s Aztec HeritageFrom the early decades of its history, San Diego State has identified it-

self with the Aztecs, one of the most sophisticated and distinctive societiesin the history of the Western Hemisphere. A fitting choice for a universitycommitted to internationalism and diversity, the Aztec identity evokesgreat pride in Mexico, as well as among many people in the United States, and certainly within the SDSU community. Consequently, San Diego Statestrives to honor the Aztec people by enhancing awareness, understandingand appreciation of Aztec culture and achievements.

Aztec HistoryAztec civilization dates back at least to the 12th century A.D. The pre-

cise location is still debated by scholars, but tradition tells us of a placesomewhere north of modern-day Mexico City known at that time as Azt-lan, which meant "the place of the cranes" or "the place of the herons."The people who lived in this land were called Azteca, meaning "those ofAztlan."

The Azteca eventually left their homeland and became known as theMexica. Native folklore attributes this name change to the instructions ofthe people's patron deity, Huitzilopochtli (Hummingbird on the Left).

Around 1325, the Mexica settled on an island in Lake Texcoco, an areathat is now the heart of Mexico City, and named it Tenochtitlan or "theplace of the fruit of the cactus." A century later, the Mexica and two otherNahuatl-speaking city-states, Texcoco and Tlacopan, combined to create anentity popularly known as the Aztec Empire. Boasting a strong militaryforce, this new alliance commanded a sphere of influence that stretchedacross much of present-day Mexico. Tenochtitlan and its surrounding val-ley evolved into a highly sophisticated, multicultural and multilingual city-state of several million inhabitants. At this same time, major Europeancities numbered only 30,000 to 40,000 in population. A cradle of innova-tion, the Aztec Empire developed advanced systems of trade, science, pol-itics, religion, education and agriculture. The Aztecs also enjoyed sportsand built grand ballcourts to accommodate team events.

Aztecs and San Diego StateSan Diego State University first adopted the Aztec name in the 1920s as

a nickname for the college's sports teams. In 1925, the student newspaperfollowed suit, changing its name from The Paper Lantern to The Aztec.Since that time, San Diego State's celebration of Aztec heritage has per-meated the campus. In 1936, a Donald Hord sculpture of Montezuma II,the last Aztec emperor, became a welcoming campus icon. With the pass-ing years, Aztec themes echoed in the names, colors and architectural el-ements of new campus buildings. And Aztec culture became the subject ofmore than a dozen university courses.

In 1941, Monty Montezuma, a character based on Montezuma II, de-buted at San Diego State athletic events as a symbolic personification ofthe Aztecs. Over time, the Montezuma character's look and activities haveevolved from a sports mascot into a more dignified and accurate represen-tation of the historical emperor. Montezuma now serves as the university'sambassador of Aztec culture, charged with the responsibility of informingand educating the San Diego community about Aztec civilization. SDSUcontinues to take pride in its affiliation with Aztec culture and to celebratethe Aztec virtues of strength, valor and intellectual achievement.

After spending three years as an assistant on the San Diego State coachingstaff, including two as associate head coach, Mike Friesen enters his fourth sea-son as the Aztecs’ head coach.

The Somona State graduate enters 2010 with a full head of steam after his2009 squad put together one of the best seasons in school history. Friesen guidedSDSU to a 15-4-5 record, the school’s best mark since 1998 and the most vic-tories since 1999. After going 3-3-1 to start the year, Friesen’s Aztecs went ona 16-game unbeaten run, including winning their final eight to propel theminto the second round of the NCAA tournament. During its magical run, SanDiego State went unbeaten in Mountain West Conference play (5-0-2) for thefirst time in school history, won the school’s first MWC tournament title, earned the program’s first NCAA tournament berth since 1999, and defeatedcross-town foe San Diego to record its first NCAA tournament victory since1998. All of this led to San Diego State becoming the sixth most improved teamin NCAA Division I, while its nine-win improvement was tied for second bestin the nation.

Following the conclusion of the conference campaign, Friesen becameSDSU’s first head coach to be named Mountain West Coach of the Year. Hewas not the only Aztec to garner awards as helped MWC Offensive Player ofthe Year Cat Walker, Aubree Southwick, Megan McQueeny, Michaela DeJesusand Niki Fernandes all pick up postseason awards. Friesen also signed a newthree-year contract in January 2010, that will keep the rising head coach onMontezuma Mesa through the 2012 campaign.

In 2008, Friesen and San Diego State enjoyed one of its best offensive seasonsin recent memory scoring 32 goals, the most in one year since 2002. The of-fensive production led to many early-game leads, but with a youthful team anda season-ending injury suffered by starting goalkeeper Aubree Southwick, SanDiego State was unable to hold off opponents en route to a 6-10-3 record.

Despite a subpar season, Friesen helped Walker and Jessica Gordon earn all-Mountain West Conference honors. Under Friesen’s tutelage, Walker had ateam-high 10 goals and 23 points to earn first-team accolades, while Gordon

was named to the secondteam after finishing withfive goals and 12 points.

In his first year at thehelm of SDSU women’ssoccer, Friesen led theScarlet and Black to arunner-up finish in theMWC with a 4-2-1record, marking theAztecs’ most league winssince the 2000 campaign. After the successful sea-son, Friesen had fourplayers earn all-confer-ence honors, includingSouthwick, who becamethe first player in MWChistory to earn two indi-vidual awards when shewas tabbed the defensiveplayer of the year andfreshman of the year.Southwick also becamethe fourth Aztec inschool history, and firstsince 2000, to be namedto the Soccer Buzz fresh-

man All-America team.Friesen, the fourth head coach in SDSU history, has played a significant role

in bringing excitement back to Aztec soccer. Over the past five seasons,Friesen’s offense has combined to score 136 goals, including 36 in 2009, 32 in2008 and 28 in 2005, the three-highest figures by an Aztec team since 2002. Infact, the 36 goals scored in 2009 is the most since 1999.

Friesen teamed with former Aztec head coach Dr. Mike Giuliano to bring anup-tempo, in-your-face style of defense, which was successful as evidenced bythe team's 12 shutouts in 2004, the second most in school history. The Aztecsallowed just 18 goals in 21 games that season, the program's fewest since the1990 squad gave up 12 goals in 13 games. SDSU, which surrendered just threegoals in MWC action, also had a stretch of five-plus games where it went595:44 without allowing an opponent to score. The stellar season culminated inthe Aztecs’ first appearance in the MWC championship game since 1999.

Friesen helped with the development of four 2004 all-conference selections, including MWC Defensive Player of the Year Alexis Solovij.

Prior to coming to San Diego State, Friesen spent five years working with theUC Santa Barbara women's program.

Friesen's responsibilities with the Gauchos included coaching the team's of-fense, recruiting, community outreach and academics.

Upon arriving in Santa Barbara, Friesen helped turn the Gaucho programaround, going from a 7-29-2 mark and scoring just 27 goals the two seasonsprior to his arrival, to a 24-11-6 mark in 2002-03, tallying 105 scores. Friesenalso was integral in signing and developing three straight Big West Conferenceoffensive players of the year in Jennifer Borcich in 2001 and 2003 and KrystalSandza in 2002.

Friesen has a great deal of experience coaching at a variety of levels. Beforehis time at UCSB, he guided the under-19 Santa Rosa United Aftershocks tothe 1999 girls' California State Cup championship. In 1997, he directed Ursu-line High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., to the CIF North Coast Section champi-onship game.

As a student-athlete, Friesen was an offensive standout at Point LomaNazarene (1988-89) and Sonoma State (1993-94). He played two years for theSea Lions before transferring to Sonoma State, where he was a member of anNCAA Division II quarterfinalist squad in 1993. Friesen was also the second-leading scorer in the Northern California Athletic Conference as a senior.

Friesen completed his degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in biome-chanics in 1996, before continuing his soccer playing career with the NorthBay Breakers of the USISL. The Breakers reached the regional finals in theteam's final year of existence. For the next several seasons, he played for Ju-ventus in the California Premier Soccer Alliance before signing with the GreekAmericans Soccer Club, based in San Francisco, which won two U.S. Open Cupchampionships in the 1990s.

Friesen and his wife Jamie, who was a former basketball letterwinner atUCLA, have a son, Cole Jamey (7), and a daughter, Emily Mychael (4).

The 2009 season will go down as one of themost successful in San Diego State history and theAztecs’ performance was their most complete effortin the 11-year history of the Mountain West Con-ference.

SDSU finished the campaign with a 15-4-5record after starting the season with a very average3-3-1 mark. But after a crushing overtime loss atArizona State, the Aztecs went on an unbeaten tearthat covered 16 games and propelled them to an un-beaten conference record, the MWC tournamenttitle and into the second round of the NCAA tour-nament.

The following are some noteworthy team ac-complishments from the 2009 season.

- The Aztecs earned an NCAA tournament berthfor the first time since 1999. The NCAA invitationwas SDSU’s third in school history (1998, 1999,2009).

- With its first-round victory over San Diego, SanDiego State posted its first NCAA tournament winsince 1998.

- SDSU won its first-ever Mountain West Confer-ence tournament title. The championship was theschool’s first since winning the Western AthleticConference in 1998.

- The Aztecs ended the regular season ranked No.16 in the Soccer America poll and received votes inthe final NSCAA (No. 33) and Soccer Times (No.37) polls.

- San Diego State was the sixth most improved teamin NCAA Division I. The Aztecs completed the

2008 campaign with a 6-10-3 mark and reboundedwith their 15-4-5 effort in 2009. The nine-win im-provement was tied for the second-best mark in thenation.

- The Aztecs’ 15 wins were the most since 1999, thefirst season of the MWC, when that squad finishedthe season with a 15-7 mark. The four losses, mean-while, were the fewest since the 1998 team went19-3-1.

- SDSU went through the Mountain West regularseason schedule and finished with a 5-0-2 record. Itmarked the first time the Aztecs went unbeaten inMWC play. The last time San Diego State finishedwith a zero in the second column was in 1998 whenthe Scarlet and Black posted a 6-0 record in WACplay.

- The Aztecs carried a 16-game unbeaten streak(12-0-4) into the second round of the NCAA tour-nament. The run was the school’s longest in a sin-gle season and matched the longest in programhistory.

- Before suffering a loss at No. 3 UCLA in the sec-ond round of the NCAA tournament, San DiegoState’s 16-game unbeaten streak was tied for thefourth longest in NCAA Division I.
