Small town. Big school.UC Davis is ranked 16th among public universities nationwide by the National Research Council, is listed 11th among public universities nationwide by U.S. News & World Report; and is 10th in research funding among all U.S. ranked public universities by the National Science Foundation. The campus is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, one of just 62 institutions of higher learning to be admitted to this distinguished group.

Founded in 1908 as the University Farm amid the fertile fields of the state’s Central Valley, UC Davis embarks on a centennial celebration during the 2008-09 academic year. The campus encompasses the colleges of Letters and Science, Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and professional schools in Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Education. It also operates the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, one of the leading teaching and research hospitals in the nation. In 2007, the campus announced a $100 million in founding support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to launch the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

This is a period of growth and change for UC Davis. The campus has seen growth in student, faculty and staff populations and is in the midst of more than $1 billion in new construction. New facilities do or will include new laboratories, new classrooms and new student sports and recreation facilities. Thanks to the generosity of one of the world’s most renowned winemakers,

groundbreaking took place in 2005 on the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2002 and is a showcase part of the campus.

UC Davis has enjoyed a distinguished history in athletics as it continues a new era in NCAA Division I. The Aggies are official members in most sports in the Big West Conference which includes fellow UC campuses Irvine, Riverside and Santa Barbara. The transition to Division I brought to an end a successful Division II era in which UC Davis captured six Directors’ Cups in eight years, awarded annually to the most successful athletics program in the country. UC Davis also twice received recognition from Sports Illustrated for Women as the top Div. II school for women while Sports Illustrated has also previously honored the institution. In addition to 26 varsity sports (14 for women and 12 for men), the campus offers nearly 40 student-organized club sports. Women's field hockey will become the 27th varsity sport when it begins competition in 2009. And each year, more than 19,000 students participate in intramural sports.

All students can enjoy abundant on- and off-campus recreational facilities for tennis, softball, basketball, volleyball and golf. Given the area’s Mediterranean climate, outdoor recreation continues year round. The program is also among the nation’s leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and has had three winners of the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award, tied for the most among all schools in the country.

MARYCLAIRE ROBINSON Head Coach19th YearColorado College ’90

MaryClaire Robinson enters her 19th season as the face of UC Davis women’s soccer. During her tenure, she has amassed 169 victories and a .552 winning percentage. Nine times she has led her team to 10 wins or more, which includes a stretch of eight straight seasons with win totals in double figures. In all, Robinson holds a 169-135-25 record.

In 2006, the Aggies completed the final season of a four-year transi-tion to Division I. The year included a 9-6-2 record as well as a six-game winning streak. It was the team’s best mark since 2002 and provided a springboard to the much-anticipated 2007 season. In 2008, UC Davis posted a 7-7-3 mark and, with its stingy defense, was the only Big West team to allow two or fewer goals in each contest.

The D-I transition began with the 2003 season with 2004 being the first year of a schedule consisting exclusively of Division I teams. It was during that season the Aggies earned Soccer Buzz magazine’s No. 1 ranking among first-year Division I programs.

During the previous eight seasons, from 1995-2002, Robinson amassed a 95-47-11 record as well as three first-place and three second-place conference finishes. In 1996, her team won a career-best 15 games against just four losses and one tie. That included an 8-1-1 record in the Northern California Athletic Association (NCAC) and a conference title. For her efforts, Robinson was named the NCAC Coach of the Year

for the second time as well as Far West Region Coach of the Year. The team was ranked as high as No. 4 nationally and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in UC Davis history.

Robinson’s teams would later go on to win consecutive regular season divisional titles in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2001 and 2002.

In 2002, the Aggies had one of the finest years in program history, winning 13 games and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996. During that run, UC Davis eliminated conference rival and two-time defending NCAA champion UC San Diego on its way to a national quarterfinal berth. For her efforts, Robinson was named the NCAA Division II West Region Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.

That season Robinson also directed the Aggies to the California Col-legiate Athletic Association tournament for the fourth time in five years, earning CCAA Coach-of-the-Year honors. She reached double figures in victories for the eighth straight time and the ninth time in her first 11 seasons along the Aggie sideline.

Prior to her current position, Robinson served as an assistant coach at UC Davis in 1991 and as JV head coach in 1990 where she guided the team to a 9-4 record.

As a collegiate player, Robinson won first-team All-Central Region honors four times at Colorado College and garnered first-team All-America distinction in 1989. She helped lead her teams to the NCAA title game twice, losing in 1986 and 1989 to North Carolina.

A 1990 graduate of Colorado College, Robinson has also received her teaching credential and master’s degree from Sacramento State.

Robinson holds an Advanced National Diploma with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and a B License with the United States Soccer Federation.

In 2006, Robinson and her teammates from their 1986 collegiate team were inducted into the Colorado College Athletic Hall of Fame. Robinson and her husband, UC Davis alumnus Peter Brostrom, reside in Sacramento with their daughters Teaghan and Piper.

ROZANNE DeWEESE Associate Head Coach7th YearCal State San Bernardino

Rozanne DeWeese begins her seventh season on the Aggie staff, and her fourth as associate head coach. She assists head coach MaryClaire Robinson in all facets of coaching, recruiting and program management. During her tenure with the Aggies, she has played an instrumental role in the Aggies’ transition to Division I. In all, she brings more than a decade of coaching experience to UC Davis.

DeWeese’s first three years with the Aggies coincided with the final three seasons for the program in its reclassification from Division II to Division I. During that time, she was an associate head coach on a team that posted a 9-6-2 record in 2006 as an independent competing against an all-DI schedule as well as a full slate against the team’s future Big West opponents.

Her efforts in recruiting have allowed Robinson to sign some of the program’s top classes in its 25-year history as varsity sport.

DeWeese arrived at UC Davis in July of 2004 after spending the pre-vious four seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana State University. Her responsibilities included on-field coaching, team travel and recruiting coordinator. During her four seasons with the Sycamores, ISU produced two first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selections and four second-team all-conference honorees.

Before working on the staff at Indiana State, DeWeese spent three years as an assistant at her alma mater, California State University, San Bernardino. As a member of the staff at CSUSB she assisted with the recruiting efforts, practice sessions and monitored the academic progress of the women’s soccer team.

DeWeese played collegiately for the Coyotes and finished her career tied for third all-time in career goals (27) and fifth in points (61). In her senior season she was named team captain, a second-team All-California Col-legiate Athletic Association selec-tion, and a CoSIDA Academic All-American. DeWeese was the 1997 Scholar Athlete of the Year and was an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee.

DeWeese holds USSF Na-tional “B” and National Youth coaching licenses. She coaches a team with the local Davis Legacy soccer club.

JASON HOTALING Assistant Coach1st YearSonoma State ‘96

Hotaling begins his sixth season as an Aggie assistant coach and his first working full-time with both the men’s and women’s soccer programs. He will be primarily responsible for goalkeeper training and will assist with other aspeccts of both programs.

In addition to this duties with UC Davis, Hotaling works as a head coach for U12 and U16 teams with the Davis Youth Soccer League. Ho-taling also works with the Olympic Development Program in District 6, coaching and developing players while serving as a state evaluator. He also holds an advanced national goalkeeping license with the NSCAA and has taken leadership and management courses along the way.

After his collegiate career at SRJC and Chico State, Hotaling was a member of the Chico Rooks of the Premier Development League. He then returned to his hometown of Rohnert Park, Calif., where he finished his undergraduate degree at Sonoma State. Hotaling majored in speech communiciation with a minor in English.

Aggie Coaching HistoryUC Davis women’s soccer enters its 28th year of varsity status, having run under the guidance of just four head coaches. The program had been a club until 1983, then became a part of the intercollegiate athletics department after field hockey was discon-tinued.

With 18 of those seasons on her resumé, current head coach MaryClaire Robinson is by far the program’s winningest coach, claiming more than twice as many victories than the three previ-ous coaches combined. She reached the 150-win plateau in the 2006 season finale against Pacific.

AGGIE SOCCER STADIUMOne of the finest playing surfaces in Northern California, Ag-

gie Soccer Stadium has been the home to the UC Davis men’s and women’s soccer teams since 1985. Built with primarily volunteer time and materials, Aggie Soccer Stadium is a product of the community’s dedication to the sport of soccer.

The stadium bleachers, which have a capacity of 1,000 specta-tors, are the result of a 10-year project that reached completion in 1997. There are 65 nameplates affixed to the seat backs to recognize major stadium contributors. Additionally, an electronic scoreboard and high-fidelity sound system has been added to the facility.

Furthermore, new restrooms and concessions were added to the baseball/soccer complex during the 2001-02 year. In the summer of 2005, the field was resurfaced with a Bermuda hybrid and a new irrigation system was installed. Mark Lucas, who had previously worked at Cal, returned to UC Davis to supervise this project.

In 1994, Aggie Soccer Stadium was among those facilities invited to submit a bid to become a training facilities for the World Cup.
