Head Coach Skip Steffey

In June of 2009 Skip Steffey was named the head men’s golf coach in addition to his duties as head women’s golf coach. Steffey led the Flyers to the 2010-11 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship. The victory was the program’s sixth GLVC Championship. Casey Pyne and Logan Watts earned All-GLVC honors for their second and fourth place finishes, respectively. The performance earned Lewis a berth in the NCAA Midwest/South Central Regional. Following the season Casey Pyne was named the GLVC Golfer of the Month for April. He also took home GCAA All-Midwest Region honors for his play throughout the season. In the fall of 2010, sopho-more Brandon White was victorious in the Phoenix Fall Classic defeating two other opponents in a playoff hole. During Steffey’s first season as men’s golf coach in 2009-10 the Flyers won the St. Joseph’s Players Championship, St. Francis Fall Classic and Lewis Mixed Fall Classic. Junior Casey Pyne finished second among 93 golfers at the NCAA Division II Preview on Sept. 28-29. Pyne was just one shot off the lead. The Spring began with another victory, this time in the Shootout at Aguila. Lewis finished seventh at the GLVC Championship. Senior Paul Dagys was se-lected to the participate as an individual in the Midwest/South Central Regional. Pyne earned All-GLVC honors. Steffey, who has six years at Lewis as the women’s golf head coach, was named the 2008-09 GLVC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year. During the season two Flyers finished in the top 10 at the GLVC Championship. Amy Sachs earned All-GLVC honors while Jamie Siedlaczek missed all-conference accolades by just one stroke, tying for eighth. Sachs was then selected to compete as an individual in the super regional. Siedlaczek, who won Lewis’ first women’s golfer of the month award in October of 2008, took home a special Lewis honor at the end of the school year. She earned Lewis’ Female Senior Student-Athlete Award. The annual honor goes to the student-athlete with the best overall grade-point average. In 1971, Steffey earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education (English minor) and K-12 teaching accreditation at Texas Christian University. He was a member of the golf team, dormitory council president in 1970 and a graduate assistant golf instructor in 1971. A resident of Mokena, Steffey and his wife, Karen, who is a 1997 Lewis graduate and played two seasons for the Flyer women’s golf team and was a two-time Academic All-GLVC selection. She is a reading specialist at Liberty Junior High School in Burbank. The Steffeys are parents of a son, Tres, and a daughter Kim. Tres is a 2004 sport management graduate of Lewis where he played four years on the Flyers’ men’s golf team and twice earned All-American Scholar recogni-tion from the Golf Coaches Associa-tion of America. He is a practicing attorney working in real estate tax reduction. Kim is a 2006 graduate of Western Illinois University where she was a Summa Cum Laude graduate in exercise science and kinesiology. She is a co-owner and instructor/coach at Gym Kinetics Gymnastics located in Mokena, Ill.

2012 Spring Season Preview The reining Great Lakes Valley Conference Champion Lewis men’s golf team will start their title defense with the Shootout in Arizona on March 8-9. Lewis is the two-time defending champions of the event. The 2012 Flyers are led by junior Brandon White. He closed the fall season by winning the Midwest Regional held at Sun-set Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Mo. White finished with a one-under 70-73=143 performance in the event. His first round 70 tied a career-best. “We had several players shoot career low rounds this past fall, but have struggled to maintain the consistency necessary to move up in the regional rankings,” Lewis head coach Skip Steffey said. Lewis will look to a trio of experienced returners to reach the consistency Steffey aspires for. “Senior Nick Quagliano is having a solid season along with junior transfer Harrison Carmichael and sophomore Thomas Hearden,” Steffey said. “All three have posted excellent tournament rounds and showed the most consistent play among returners.” Freshman Nick Szerzinski showed signs of his potential in the fall. He shot a second round 70 in the Great Lakes Re-gional #1 to finish tied for 14th among 135 participants. “Nick has played very solid golf for the team this fall and will hopefully continue his fine play this spring,” Steffey said. “We will also be looking for significant contributions from sophomores Kyle Mulcahy, E.J. Luna, Dan Petrarca, Alex Fried and junior Mark Bermele. The Flyers will spend a great deal of time in Kentucky this spring, starting with the Norse Invitational at Pendleton Coun-try Club in Butler, Ky. The tournament features several teams from the GLVC. Two weeks later the Flyers return to the Bluegrass State to compete in the crucial Great Lakes Regional #3 at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in George-town. It’s the same tournament where the Flyers began their run to the GLVC Champion-ship last year with a solid performance led by former Flyer Casey Pyne’s second-place finish. Lewis has a quick turnaround to the sec-ond spring regional, held the following week at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. just outside of Indianapolis. The two regionals will likely decide the Flyers’ fate for the NCAA Super-Regional to be held at Cherry Blossom in May. Lewis also has important dates in the middle of April at the Paducah Country Club to defend their GLVC Championship. “If we can just get each team member to eliminate one bad shot a day we can win the conference title again,” Steffey said. “All it takes is a little better focus and the belief that we can do it, that’s what we had last year going to the conference tournament; the team believed they could win.”

history Founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil, Lewis began as the Holy Name Technical School, a school for boys and was established on 170 acres of farmland donated by Michael and Frances Fitz-patrick of Lockport. Avia-tion technology became the special emphasis of instruction and the origin of today’s highly regarded Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies. During World War II,

hundreds of Navy flight instructors were trained at Lewis. In 1952, the school was renamed the Lewis College of Science and Technology and granted its first baccalaureate degrees. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers - members of a 328-year-old religious order devoted exclusive-ly to teaching and named after Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators – assumed direction of the institu-tion. Today, with growing enrollment, outstanding programs, experienced faculty and motivated students, Lewis University is recognized as one of the finest, mid-sized, comprehensive Catholic universities in the country.

When Dan Schumacher was hired as Lewis University’s Director of Athletics in June of 2006, the Chicago native knew the heights that the Flyers Athletics program could reach as a department. With great vision comes great expectations, and Schumacher and the Flyers have most certainly delivered. Since his arrival, Lewis has won the 2010-11 Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy, seven regular-season GLVC championships and 12 GLVC Tournament championships, while making appearances in 16 NCAA Tournaments, including the men’s soccer team’s run to the ‘Final Four’ in 2009. While the Flyers have made improvements on the field, the fields have also been improved during Schumacher’s tenure, as there has been over $5,000,000 worth of facility upgrades on the Romeoville campus. Schumacher helped speed up the facility upgrade timeline by forming the Varsity Club, an organized, non-profit fundraising arm of the Lewis University Athletic Department that sup-ports small-scale capital improvements.

Neil Carey Arena, home of both basketball and volleyball teams, has seen the most upgrades as it now features a new floor, new roof, air condition-ing, scoreboards, a video board, island baskets and retractable bleachers which has increased the seating capacity. The locker rooms in Neil Carey Arena have been remodeled and are now equipped with flat screen televisions and new open-air stadium lockers. Lewis now has the ability to video stream all of their home basketball games and volleyball matches from the Arena on www.LewisFlyers.com. Schumacher has also brought Lewis Athletics to the television airwaves, as the Flyers are in their fourth-year of airing Flyer contests on Lakeshore Public Television. Lakeshore can been seen in up to 3.5 million households in both the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana suburbs. Schumacher’s biggest accomplishment - however - is the completion of the Lewis University Multi-Purpose Athletics Complex in September of 2011. The complex features a multi-purpose field and NCAA-certified, nine-lane competition track. The multi-purpose field and track, which will be lighted, can be used for a variety of different sports, including track, soccer, football and lacrosse and many of our intramural and club sports. The facility will offer future stadium bleacher seating avail-able up to 5,000 fans, including a state of the art scoreboard. Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams have directly benefitted from Schumacher’s efforts, as the Lewis Swimming Pool now has a state-of-the-art scoring system which has allowed the program to increase its home schedule. Schumacher has also helped make the John F. Kennedy Sports Center become more ‘Flyer Friendly’, as the hallways proudly display Lewis Athletics Artwork and each office has furniture that has the Lewis Flyers Athletics logo emblazoned on it. The Athletic Training room has been remodeled and now holds custom tables, cabinets, flooring and an ice machine. Outside the JFK Sports Center, the Lewis softball team now has new dugouts, a new press box and a custom windscreen for the outfield fence, while the outfield fence of Brennan Field, home of the Flyer baseball team, now has a custom windscreen as well. On the docket for both fields are brand new Daktronics video scoreboards, which are slated to be finished by the 2012 season.

What Schumacher is most proud of, however, is the performance of his student-athletes in the classroom. In the past four years, the gradu-ation rate for Lewis student-athletes has risen from 60% to as high as 86%, while the Flyers’ Academic Success Rate (ASR) has peaked at a remarkable 98%, Schumacher has brought along eight new head coaches, including women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith, who has won three GLVC regular season and tournament championships and has lost just 22 matches in only four seasons. A 1986 Carl Sandburg High School graduate, Schumacher was responsible for the financial administration of Winona State athletics. Among his duties were marketing and promotions, development, external relations, corporate rela-tions, facilities oversight, budgeting and NCAA compliance. Schumacher was the primary catalyst of a two-year campaign that generated $3 million, through private donations and newly developed athletics department revenue channels, for major improvements to Winona State’s soccer, football, baseball, softball and basketball facilities. He also spearheaded a project that transformed a $42,000 annual corporate sponsorship program into an annual corporate/external relations program that generates $500,000 in scholar-ships for Winona State athletics and the WSU Foundation. Schumacher spent seven years with Conseco Finance Corporation prior to joining the Winona State staff, serving as Senior Credit Manager from 1995-98 and as Vice President from 1998-2002. He was a Branch Manager for TCF Bank and Mortgage Corporation in Minneapolis from 1990-95. Schumacher earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations (business administration minor) in 1989 and a master’s degree in educational/school administration in 2005, both at Winona State. He is currently pursuing his Doctorate in education at Lewis. As a member of the WSU football team, he garnered All-America honors and served two seasons as a team captain. Schumacher and wife Kristin are the parents of daughter Kasey (16) and sons Jack (13) and Declan (9).
