DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

It is the fifth year of UOIT Ridgebacks hockey and we expect bigger and better things from the blue and white at the Dog Pound!

As we move ahead, we look to continue to provide the best staff, coaches and students at our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs, combined with top flight athletic facilities. All of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students.

Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which becomes an annual contender in the OUA and CIS. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The OUA is an exciting brand of hockey and we think once you have witnessed a game, you will keep coming back.

Head Coach and Canadian hockey legend Karen Nystrom and her coaching staff are back for another season, as they look to build off the momentum generated from last season. The Campus Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound,

is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwell’s on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgebacks team also has it’s own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage.

This season, we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the high caliber of coaching staff assembled along with a highly talented roster we have in place. We can’t do it however without great fans and supporters.

We hope you enjoy year five of Ridgebacks hockey!

LET’S GO RIDGEBACKS!

Ken Babcock Director of Athletics

Johnstone continues to be an asset to the Ridgebacks as she ranks third overall in Ridgebacks career scoring with 39 career points. She ranks second in career assists and power play goals. Last season, she had a career high eight assists to go along with four goals. In her freshman campaign, Johnstone was named the UOIT female freshman athlete of the year for her athletic achievements. That year, she finished second on the team in scoring (6G, 7A) and also suited up for the tennis team.

Worthington continued to make her mark with the Ridgebacks women’s hockey program in 2010-11 as she was the team’s top scorer. She is second in career goals (17), power play goals (6) and points per game (.59). She is also fourth in overall scoring with 32 career points. The coaches will continue to look to her in pressure situations. Worthington is also known for her physical play, as she averages 1.56 penalty minutes per game. Worthington was also part of Team Ontario in 2007, a squad coached by UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom.

Goodwin, a Father Leo J. Austin Catholic secondary school graduate has been playing hockey for 12 years. A Whitby native, Goodwin also played for Etobicoke, Scarborough and Durham. She is coming off a successful season with the Durham West Jr. Lightning where she was an assistant captain, had six points and 49 penalty minutes.

Long played in all but one game in her freshman campaign and was very reliable on the blueline. She scored her first OUA goal on the road against Waterloo. Prior to joining UOIT, she played minor hockey in the Durham Region. After two solid seasons with the midget ‘AA’ Generals, Long became a member of the Whitby Junior Wolves in the PWHL where her team had the best record in Wolves history with 19-13-1-1 record in 2009/10. She was also a part of the very successful high school program playing for Monsignor Paul Dwyer. During the 2007-08 season, Dwyer won LOSSA gold and OFSAA bronze. The following season, the team went on to win LOSSA gold and was OFSAA finalists

Allen saw plenty of ice time during her freshman campaign, appearing in 25 games for the Ridgebacks where she had two goals and three assists. Her first OUA goal was against the Laurier Golden Hawks, who were CIS nationally ranked at the time. The Pickering native joined the Ridgebacks after a successful junior career in the GTA. In 2008-09, Allen played for the Etobicoke Dolphins intermediate AA team. Prior to playing for the Dolphins, Allen was the assistant captain for the Willowdale Red Wings Midget AA team. Allen was coached by Dario Giancola in Etobicoke and Willowdale.

Gordanier did a good job adjusting to play at the CIS level, as she appeared in 24 games for the Ridgebacks. Her first career goal came in only her second game which was against the Windsor Lancers. She adds intensity and size to the Ridgebacks lineup, as the 6’1 forward is a physical presence on the ice as a left shooting forward. The Kingston native grew up playing in her hometown and finished out her career with the city’s midget ‘AA’ team. Wearing an ‘A’, she led the Ice Wolves to multiple medals at the provincials over the years. An all-around great athlete, Gordanier has also had success at the OFSAA level in basketball and track & field.

Spencer joins the Ridgebacks after a successful junior career with the Whitby Wolves. In 2010-11, Whitby won the gold medal at the Stoney Creek University showcase. The team finished fifth in the PWHL (a program high) and had a bronze-medal performance at the OWHA intermediate AA championship at York University. Spencer was the assistant captain with the Wolves. Playing with the Whitby Midget AA team in 2008-09 under UOIT men’s hockey assistant coach Craig Fisher, the Wolves were silver medalists at the OWHA provincial championship, after going undefeated during the regular season in the LLFHL. Her other accomplishments include being named her high school Junior Female Athlete of the Year, attending the Prospects Women‘s Showcase Camp, being featured in Metroland’s Faces of the Future special and earning the Clarington Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Academics.

Daly, a Denis O’Connor Catholic secondary school graduate, is an Ajax native. Daly played for the Ajax/Pickering AAA Raiders for five years to start off her competitive hockey career. Upon entering high school, she switched to women’s hockey where she played in the PWHL for three years. She started her junior career in Durham West and finished it while playing for the Toronto Aeros. In two years with the Aeros, Daly put up an impressive 41 points in 63 games.

Hadley makes her return to the Ridgebacks lineup after sitting out the majority of the past two seasons. The native of Belleville, Ont. is a scoring threat from anywhere in the offensive zone as she was second on the team in goals despite missing a portion of the season due to injury in 2008-09. Hadley will be asked to make plays offensively, using her vision to set up her teammates and find the back of the net herself.

In 2011-12, Morillo has been named the second captain of the women’s hockey program. She is the career leader in goals and is second in career points. Last year, she led the team with 10 goals. In her freshman year, she was tied for the league lead in freshman scoring with 24 points (14G,10A), she was also named a member of the OUA all-rookie team and UOIT’s overall & women’s hockey freshman athlete of the year. Her speed, tenacity, and ability to see the ice has contributed to her success and will continue to do so.

Nisbett is a fourth year student at UOIT but a freshman with the Ridgebacks. She is a walk on to the team with a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. Focusing mainly on high school hockey, Nisbett is quickly adjusting to the pace of OUA hockey. She is a role player who never gives up. She has a smart sense of the game and finishes every play to the best of her ability.

Carter is a native of Whitby entering into her fourth season on the blue line with the Ridgebacks. She is fifth all-time in games played and is now the team’s assistant captain. She is an aggressive physical defensive player with a lot of grit for the game. Carter is a definite stay-at-home defenceman who looks after her goalie and her own zone.

Churly had her freshman season cut down to 18 games due to injuries late in the season. In junior hockey, Churly played in 33 games with the Markham-Stouffville Jr. Stars, racking up 18 points including eight goals. Prior to joining Markham-Stouffville, Churly played three seasons with the Oshawa midget ‘AA’ team. She played in 58 games in total, where the team combined for a 29-23-16 record.

Gibson had a standout year in 2010-11 as she was named the team’s MVP. She had career highs in goals and assists and finished fifth in team scoring. From day one of her freshman campaign, Gibson had the dedication and positive attitude that the coaching staff is looking for in a player. She was named an assistant captain for the 2011-12 season.

Beggs made a significant impact in her first season with the Ridgebacks, as she played in all 27 games. She is known across hockey circles as a smart, speedy player. She was a member of the Scarborough sharks youth program, playing on both the midget ‘A’ and ‘AA’ teams. With the help of Beggs, the Sharks quickly worked themselves up to one of, if not the most established teams in the OWHA. Beggs was also a member of the Toronto Junior Aeros in the 2009-10 season. She won a gold medal at provincials as well as the playoff final four championship. The Aeros had the opportunity this year to play against elite teams such as Harvard, Cornell and Brown and came out with two wins and a tie.

Morgan played in 26 games in her freshman season and was a go to player on the penalty killing unit. She scored her first two OUA goals in a 4-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers who were in the CIS national rankings at the time. She joined the Ridgebacks after a successful junior career with the Durham West Junior Lightning and Whitby Wolves. Playing midget ‘AA’ with Whitby, her team finished first in their league and second in provincials. Morgan contributed three goals and two assists in four post season games to help her team advance to the finals. In 2009-10 with Durham West, Morgan finished top five in team scoring with six goals and seven assists during the regular season.

Palmateer enters her fifth season with the Ridgebacks as the all-time leader in assists, points and second in games played. She also still holds the record for most assists in a season, set back in 2008-09. Selected as the assistant captain three seasons ago, this Cobourg native has been nothing but a leader on and off the ice. She was recognized as an OUA woman of influence and also received the inaugural James-Baun Cup award at the UOIT athletic banquet.

Jardine led all freshman in scoring with five goals in 2010-11. She scored two goals in the Ridgebacks back-to-back wins to close out regular season. In junior, Jardine played for the Markham-Stouffville Junior Stars, where an unexpected number of injuries to the team forced her to play both positions. Jardine rose up to the challenge using her speed and knowledge of both ends of the ice to be successful. Due to her tremendous leadership, she was named the team’s assistant captain. Before joining the Stars, Jardine played with the Willowdale Red Wings where she was named team captain all four years. Her leadership and commitment to the team will bring a positive aspect to her game and everyone around her.

Berney had an outstanding freshman year for the Ridgebacks as she was named the team’s top rookie. A bullet of a shot from the point, Berney strikes fear in opposing goaltenders across the league. She joined UOIT after a season with the Clarington Flames midget ‘A’ team. A walk on to the team, Berney is seen as a stay at home defenceman with a knack for getting pucks to safe places. Before coming to the Ridgebacks, Berney was the captain of her Midget ‘A’ team and was the leading scorer as a defenceman. She also received awards in leadership and sportsmanship.

Last year, Whately had career highs in games played, assists and points for the Ridgebacks. She led the blueline in scoring with eight points. She is a smart, strong blue liner who has experienced tremendous success with the Ridgebacks. A favourite of the Ridgeback fans, Whately makes huge plays on both the power play and penalty kill. Her smart decision making and excellent vision on the ice was rewarded this year with the top defensive player award. She was named an assistant captain for the 2011-12 season.

In 2009-10, Karen Nystrom became the second head coach of the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey program after founding head coach Gary Pitcher stepped down following the conclusion of the 2008-09 OUA regular season, passing the torch to his assistant coach and national team hero.

Nystrom has quite an impressive hockey resume as a member of the Canadian National team for almost a decade. In her career with Team Canada, she won three World Championship titles (1992, 1994 & 1997), a 3 Nations Cup title (1996) and a Pacific Rim championship (1995). She also won an Olympic silver medal at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.

Not only has Nystrom excelled on the ice, but in coaching as well. She served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Jr. Aeros and for an U-18 team Ontario which won a gold medal. For the past two seasons, she has gained valuable

experience behind the bench with the Ridgebacks as an assistant coach.

Nystrom will bring the same intensity to the Ridgeback team as she did on the ice throughout her playing career, with a focus on conditioning, team speed and aggressiveness. She is looking forward to the new challenges she is about to face as a head coach in the CIS, striving to build the program into a one of the top teams in the country.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

FLEX CentreThe FLEX Fitness Centre is one of the great new additions of the CRWC at UOIT. The FLEX Fitness Centre is 10,000-sq. ft., full of the best state-of-the-art cardio and weight machines. The centre also includes two aerobic/dance studios, two training rooms used for sports training and fitness related classes.

Also available to the athletes is a brand new physiotherapy room, massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services. Having these services all under one roof will allow for quicker care, which in turn will result in quicker recovery and a return to game action.

CRWCThe Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which opened in 2007 is the crown jewel of athletics and health & fitness at UOIT. The centre piece of the state-of-the-art $17 million facility is the new 28,500 sq. ft. gymnasium. The gymnasium is fully equipped with a top of the line shock resistant maple hardwood floor, seating for 2,000 spectators and a curtain system to create three separate gyms. The triple gym also has three electronic scoreboards, a professional quality sound system and a complete floor covering system available for non-sporting events. The large gym is also host to an elevated, 200 metre, three-lane running track.

Also part of the CRWC is an additional 13,500 sq. ft. gym. The secondary gymnasium features a curtain system to create two separate courts, two scoreboards, a media gondola and bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators.

The CRWC also includes two training rooms, a boardroom and a VIP lounge. The training rooms have multiple set ups available; from classroom, to spin classes, to a training environment. The boardroom has a meeting room capacity of 24, and up to 36 for special event use. Another highlight of the CRWC is the VIP lounge that includes a great view on to main court action or other special events in the gymnasium.

The CRWC also contains ten large team rooms with showers, perfect for tournament and special event use. These rooms are used to host annual tournaments such as the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament, the Adidas Cup and the Big 8 Classic.

Sharing space with the CRWC is the Campus Health Centre. This facility is home to a medical clinic as well as an on-site pharmacy. The Health Centre is also home to an alternative treatment clinic which offers acupuncture, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy and nutritional counseling.

The CRWC was the proud host of the 2008 Provincial Special Olympics Spring Games.

UOIT TRADITIONS

Hunter the RidgebackHunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa.

Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

Ridgebacks Nickname

The BLUE CREWThe Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets.

Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pregame specials available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwell’s on the Ridge.

The Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

A Ridgeback is a large and well-muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident that thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions.

In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus.

Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

DR. JUDY MCCAW MEMORIAL TROPHY

The Women’s Ice Hockey Championship team is presented with the Dr. Judy McCaw Trophy. Originally awarded in 1922 as the WIAU Ice Hockey Trophy, it was rededicated in 1972 by the University of Guelph in McCaw’s honour. McCaw was a feisty center forward on Guelph’s women’s hockey team. She is fondly remembered for her exceptional leadership qualities, aptitude in the classroom and her overall athletic ability. The well like veterinarian died an untimely death in the mid 1960’s.

OUA WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

Shannon Galea • Rowing/SquashUOIT rower Shannon Galea, a first-year Education student, was recognized as one of the top female scholar athletes in Ontario University Athletics (OUA). Galea received her award on Wednesday, March 2 at the eighth annual Women of Influence Luncheon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Galea was a member of the Ridgebacks novice women’s eight crew on the water this season. At the OUA championship, she and her crew went on to win the first OUA medal in UOIT Ridgeback rowing program history, a bronze. Leading up to the OUA championship, the women’s novice eight crew won a gold medal at the Guelph Invitational and gold at the Brock Invitational.

Galea doesn’t only excel at rowing; she will also become the first person to represent UOIT at the OUA Squash Championships in March. The Oshawa, Ontario native was also formerly named an Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fast Pitch Association (OIWFA) All-Star and MVP with McMaster University and won the 2009 OIWFA Championship. The honour roll student’s extracurricular activities include her involvement on the UOIT Ridgebacks’ rowing executive and serving as coordinator of the UOIT extramural women’s flag football team.

The OUA Women of Influence event honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, fields of study and community involvement. This year’s guest speaker was tennis star Venus Williams. The legendary tennis star is a winner of five Wimbledon titles, seven Grand Slams, 41 WTA tour titles and three Olympic gold medals.
