In response to the formula challenge posted by the Society of Automotive Engineers, a group of dedicated students from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology have formed UOIT Motor-sports. The team’s purpose is to design, budget and build their formula-style race car to compete at various international FSAE challenges.

The teams financial support will come from various sponsorships that will allow us to acquire construction materials, testing equipment and other elements required for the venture.

In 1979, the Society of Automotive Engineers created the “Mini-Indy”. The event was designed to give aspiring engi-neers a project that would involve the design of a race car, the construction process and the project management responsibilities associated with it. By 1997, this event was renamed to “formula SAE”, and had grown to an interna-tional level.

FSAE has afforded passionate engineering students an amazing opportunity in designing, constructing and man-aging the production of a high speed race car. These prototypes are judged based on cost, effective use of materi-als, and overall design concepts.

Our team's goal is to design, fabricate and race a competitive FSAE vehicle in a multitude of Formula SAE events. The team operates on the premise that we have been contracted to produce a prototype car for evaluation and for possible production. With a tight deadline of just one year to create a fully operative prototype, it is essential that our team operates under the highest standard of efficiency. To make our goal a reality, UOIT Motorsports will require capi-tal, management and engineering expertise, state-of-the-art prototyping facilities, and a fully equipped workshop suited to our needs.

Recognizing the need for a more “hands on” experience in the undergraduate curriculum, a group of 30 stu-dents came together in 2005 to form UOIT Motorsports. By April 2007 their first car, F2007, was complete and won the “William C. Mitchell Award” for Rookie of the Event at Formula SAE West. Propelled by suc-cess, the team went on to create another 4 vehicles, each winning a number of accolades.

Each year, the competition requires that the ve-hicle be redesigned. Parts from the previous vehicle may be reused, but a new chassis must be fabri-cated. For our team, we must not only produce this new chassis, but also every other component that goes into the vehicle.

Additionally, we must also purchase the tools and equipment for manufacturing and testing the vehicle. In order to assure that these expenses can be accommodated, each department has created a budget to limit their costs.
