UOIT MEN’S SOCCERAt the OUA annual general meeting in May, the UOIT Athletic Department learned that the program submission for men’s soccer was officially sanctioned and the team is set to enter OUA conference play beginning in the 2010-11 University season.

UOIT will play in the OUA West Division joining the Waterloo Warriors, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Guelph Gryphons, Windsor Lancers, Brock Badgers, Western Mustangs, McMaster Marauders and the 2008 CIS National Champion York Lions. The Ridgebacks conference schedule will consist of 16 games.

This past year, the Ridgebacks played an exhibition season against some of the top clubs, University and College teams from across Ontario.

VasoVUJANOVICHead Coach

This past August, the UOIT athletic department was excited to announce the hiring of Vaso Vujanovic as the inaugural head coach of the Ridgebacks men’s soccer varsity program.Vujanovic has an extensive soccer background that includes playing semi-professional soccer in Yugoslavia and coaching at the highest levels in Canadian collegiate soccer. With a career spanning over four decades, Vujanovic has established himself as one of the premier coaches in the country having coached the Durham College men’s and women’s soccer programs to provincial and national prominence.Coach Vujanovic’s legacy can be seen at UOIT and Durham College on a daily basis, as the varsity soccer pitch has been named “Vaso’s Field” in recognition of his achievements.

Athletics is a big part of student life on campus. UOIT is home to many new state-of-the-art facilities including the brand new Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre. The facility is home to varsity athletics and has five gymnasiums totaling over 40,000 sq ft of playing area and can house over 3,000 spectators. UOIT athletes and students use the new Flex Centre for their weight and cardio-training. The building also features a dance studio, a full service athletic therapy clinic, training rooms and the campus health centre. UOIT is also home to the Campus Ice Centre and Campus Tennis Centre.

Vaso’s field, nestled in the heart of the campus, is home to the UOIT men’s soccer program. Named after head coach Vaso Vujanovic and his success/contribution to the Durham College soccer programs, there is certainly a lot of optimism right from the start for a winning program with the Ridgebacks.
