DIRECTOR 'S MESSAGE

It is the sixth year of UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey and we expect bigger and better things from the blue and white at the Dog Pound!

As we move ahead, we look to continue to provide the best staff, coaches and students at our campus with the common focus of excellence for everyone. The vision includes our campus being Canada’s leader in athletics, recreation and wellness programs, combined with top flight athletic facilities. All of which will enrich the overall post secondary experience for our students.

Our intentions are to deliver a top rated, first class varsity hockey program which becomes an annual contender in the OUA and CIS. This will build a sense of pride and community on campus and will support the successful recruitment of students. The OUA is an exciting brand of hockey and we think once you have witnessed a game, you will keep coming back.

Head Coach and Canadian hockey legend Karen Nystrom and her coaching staff are back for another season, as they look to build off the momentum generated from last season. The Campus Ice Centre, aptly nicknamed the Dog Pound,

is the official home of the Ridgebacks and was packed with fans of all ages last year. The twin pad arena complex, located right on campus, has a seating capacity in the main rink for 550 with standing room for another 250 and makes for an exciting atmosphere at home games! There is also an amazing restaurant on the second level (Shagwell’s on the Ridge) that overlooks the ice. Each Ridgebacks team also has it’s own specially designed change room, coaching space, laundry and equipment storage.

This season, we look to continue building a winning tradition at UOIT with the high caliber of coaching staff assembled, along with a highly talented roster we have in place. We can’t do it however without great fans and supporters.

We hope you enjoy year six of Ridgebacks hockey!

LET’S GO RIDGEBACKS!

Ken Babcock Director of Athletics

Palmer-Dixon joins the Ridgebacks this season with high expectations as a forward. Before joining the Ridgebacks, she was a key member of the provincial Metro BP Midget AAA team in Nova Scotia. Her Midget AAA team went undefeated in provincial league and Atlantic play downs and represented the Atlantic Provinces in Hockey Canada’s 2012 Esso Cup, where they placed 4th in the country. In 2012, she was selected to the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Rookie All-Star team.

Worthington continued to make her mark with the Ridgebacks women’s hockey program in 2011-12 scoring 10 goals and 22 assists in 26 games. She is second in all-time goals scored with 27 in her career and third in overall scoring with 54 points. The coaches will continue to look to her in pressure situations. Worthington is also known for her physical play, as she averages 1.56 penalty minutes per game. Worthington was part of Team Ontario in 2007, a squad coached by UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom.

Marchese played defence for the Brampton Thunder last season, where she finished the year with three goals and nine assists while leading the team in power play goals. In 2010-11, the blueliner led the Canadettes in plus/minus with a plus-43. Marchese is a solid defender that is looked upon for stability and intelligence on the point. She plays a key role in shutting down team’s top lines; however she also has the offensive skills to improve the productivity from the blue-line.

Long has become one of the leaders in the women’s hockey dressing room, as coach Nystrom named her an assistant captain. Prior to joining UOIT, she played minor hockey in the Durham Region. After two solid seasons with the midget ‘AA’ Generals, Long became a member of the Whitby Junior Wolves in the PWHL where her team had the best record in Wolves history with a 19-13-1-1 record in 2009/10. She was also a part of the very successful high school program playing for Monsignor Paul Dwyer. During the 2007-08 season, Dwyer won LOSSA gold and OFSAA bronze. The following season, the team went on to win LOSSA gold and was OFSAA finalists.

Spencer proved to be a valuable asset to the Ridgebacks in her freshman campaign as a great puck mover out of the defensive zone, including seeing some ice time on the power play. She joined UOIT after a successful junior career with the Whitby Wolves. In 2010-11, Whitby won the gold medal at the Stoney Creek University showcase. The team finished fifth in the PWHL (a program high) and had a bronze-medal performance at the OWHA intermediate AA championship at York University. Her other accomplishments include being named her high school Junior Female Athlete of the Year, attending the Prospects Women‘s Showcase Camp, being featured in Metroland’s Faces of the Future special and earning the Clarington Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Academics.

Daly had an outstanding rookie season with the Ridgebacks being named the women’s hockey freshman of the year. She had six goals and 15 assists to finish third in team scoring. She also recorded a team-high three game winning goals. Daly, a Denis O’Connor Catholic secondary school graduate, is an Ajax native. Daly played for the Ajax/Pickering AAA Raiders for five years to start off her competitive hockey career. Upon entering high school, she switched to women’s hockey where she played in the PWHL for three years. She started her junior career with Durham West and finished it playing for the Toronto Aeros. In two years with the Aeros, Daly put up an impressive 41 points in 63 games.

Battie joins the Ridgebacks from the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA), in Penticton, British Columbia. The speedy forward came to UOIT because it gave her the opportunity to continue playing hockey while pursuing a criminology degree. One of her greatest accomplishments was being appointed captain in her final year of playing at the OHA. She is known for ability to find the open ice on the power play.

LoPresti joins the Ridgebacks after a two-year junior career with the Stoney Creek Sabres of the PWHL. Last season, the Sabres finished third during the regular season where Lopresti scored nine goals and added nine assists. She led the team in overtime and power play goals. In her career with the Sabres, she tallied 33 points with 16 goals and 17 assists. Lopresti is well known for her speed and quick shot.

In 2011-12, she became the first UOIT student-athlete to win a CIS major award, as she was named the recipient of the Marion Hilliard Award. She finished third in OUA scoring with 32 points in 26 conference games, collecting six multi-point outings and establishing several new team records along the way. Her performances earned her first-team OUA all-star status and a spot on the second all-Canadian unit and was the UOIT Athlete of the Year. In the classroom, she has earned the UOIT All-Academic award for the past two years and was named a CIS Academic All-Canadian in 2010-11. In her freshman year, she was named a member of the OUA all-rookie team and UOIT’s overall & women’s hockey freshman athlete of the year.

Forchielli enters the year after a successful run with the Stoney Creek Junior Sabres. Last year, the Sabres finished third during the PWHL regular season where Forchielli scored 12 goals and 17 assists to finish third in team scoring. She was a vital member of the power play racking up 10 points with the man advantage. In eight playoff games, Forchielli scored a team-high four goals and four assists. Forchielli should add some fire-power to the Ridgebacks offence as she recorded 60 points in 88 games in two seasons in the PWHL.

Moynes joins the Ridgebacks from the Belleville Bearcats team where she had a successful run as a stay at home defenseman. Moynes brings a good size and physical play to her game on the blue-line. Her patience and hockey knowledge on the ice are two very key components of her game. Coach Nystrom will look to Moynes for a solid work ethic as a top defender.

Budden hails from Vancouver, BC, where she played with the Vancouver Fusion of the Female Midget AAA league. With the Fusion, the 5’4 defender was a two-time league all-star and team captain. In 2010-11, she played in the U18 BC Cup and was a provincial camp invitee. Budden brings physicality and strength to the Ridgebacks lineup this season.

In 2011/12, Gibson was the recipient of the James-Baun Cup, which is presented to a student who shows commitment, dedication, perseverance, academic responsibility, leadership and is a great teammate in the pursuit of excellence. Gibson had a standout year in 2010-11 as she was named the team’s MVP. She had career highs in goals and assists and finished fifth in team scoring. From day one of her freshman campaign, Gibson had the dedication and positive attitude that the coaching staff is looking for in a player.

Sisson comes to UOIT from the Durham West Lightning Midget “AA” program where she had 10 goals and 15 assists. Sisson brings size and strength to the team as well as expertise on the penalty kill. She will be looked at as a role player and be called upon in key situations. She came to UOIT because of the recognizable Kinesiology program and the small campus atmosphere.

Morgan has established herself as one of the Ridgebacks top penalty killers in two seasons with the team. She joined the Ridgebacks after a successful junior career with the Durham West Junior Lightning and Whitby Wolves. Playing midget ‘AA’ with Whitby, her team finished first in their league and second in provincials. Morgan contributed three goals and two assists in four post season games to help her team advance to the finals. In 2009-10 with Durham West Jr., Morgan finished top five in team scoring with six goals and seven assists during the regular season.

Carter joins the Ridgebacks line-up after a season with the Whitby Wolves midget AA team. The Wolves posted an impressive 15-2-5 record and were the Lower Lake regular season champions. The team went a perfect 6-0 in play downs to qualify for the provincial championship. Carter was named an assistant captain of the Wolves. Carter is looked upon to bring her simple game play to the Ridgebacks, as she is known for getting pucks to safe places in the defensive end.

Berney had a breakout offensive year in 2011-12, recording nine assists to lead all Ridgeback defenders and finish fourth overall on the team. In her rookie season, she was named the team’s top rookie. A bullet of a shot from the point, Berney strikes fear in opposing goaltenders across the league. She joined UOIT after a season with the Clarington Flames midget ‘A’ team. A walk on to the team, Berney is seen as a stay at home defenceman with a knack for getting pucks to safe places. Before coming to the Ridgebacks, Berney was the captain of her Midget ‘A’ team and was the leading scorer as a defenceman. She also received awards in leadership and sportsmanship.

Charette is a 2012 graduate from Immaculata High School in Ottawa, where she was the first goalie to bring the Immaculata Saints girls hockey team to an NCSAA playoff round. This past year, Charette played with the Ottawa Jr. Senators and recorded a goals against average of 1.48 and a save percentage of .928. The Sens were 14-14-5-1 during the regular season and defeated Whitby in the first round of the PWHL playoffs. The 5’10 netminder will be looked upon to start in many games with the Ridgebacks and use her size and experience to bolster the Ridgebacks goaltending unit.

Lund joins UOIT this season to make-up a strong goaltending unit. Last season RIkki played with the Belleville Bearcats Midget “AA” team and was a provincial qualifier with her team. In 2008 Lund won a provincial gold medal.

Larabie is the leader in almost every goalie category in UOIT women’s hockey history. In three seasons, she has accumulated a 3.58 GAA with her best season in 2011-12 at 3.03. In 2011-12, she became the first UOIT Ridgeback student athlete to be named the CIS and OUA athletes of the week. She had a single-season high last year with wins, minutes played, appearances and saves. She will be looked upon this season as a strong asset with yet another year of experience under her belt.

CRWCThe Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which opened in 2007 is the crown jewel of athletics and health & fitness at UOIT. The centre piece of the state-of-the-art $17 million facility is the new 28,500 sq. ft. gymnasium. The CRWC also includes two training rooms, a boardroom and a VIP lounge. The training rooms have multiple set ups available; from classroom, to spin classes, to a training environment. The boardroom has a meeting room capacity of 24, and up to 36 for special event use. Another highlight of the CRWC is the VIP lounge that includes a great view on to main court action or other special events in the gymnasium.

The CRWC also contains ten large team rooms with showers, perfect for tournament and special event use. These rooms are used to host annual tournaments such as the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament, the Adidas Cup and the Big 8 Classic.

Sharing space with the CRWC is the Campus Health Centre. This facility is home to a medical clinic as well as an on-site pharmacy. The Health Centre is also home to an alternative treatment clinic which offers acupuncture, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy and nutritional counseling.

UOIT TRADITIONS

Hunter the RidgebackHunter the Ridgeback was born in February 2006. Needing an identity for the Ridgebacks varsity teams, the athletic department found this dog and asked the student body to name him. After a variety of names were considered Hunter was chosen. The name Hunter represents the breed’s instincts and reputation as a hunting dog in Africa.

Hunter can be found at UOIT varsity hockey games cheering on the teams and dancing up a storm, as well as at events throughout the community. Hunter can also be seen taking part in the UOIT ‘School is Cool’ youth programs at elementary schools across the Durham Region.

Ridgebacks Nickname

The BLUE CREWThe Blue Crew has been a tradition since the first time the UOIT Ridgebacks hockey team set foot on the ice. Some of the loudest and most rowdy fans in the OUA, members of the Blue Crew can be seen on game days sporting their distinctive Blue Crew t-shirts and hard helmets.

Anyone one can be a member of the Blue Crew, all that is required is the spirit to support the Ridgebacks and an appetite to enjoy the pregame specials available to all Blue Crew members at Shagwell’s on the Ridge.

The Ridgeback nickname represents both the athletes and the location of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

A Ridgeback is a large and well-muscled hunting dog that is legendary for its ability and use in hunting down lions. Strong and extremely competitive by nature, the Ridgeback is also lightning quick and deftly alert while constantly paying attention to its surroundings. Known as a dominant dog with aggressive instincts, the Ridgeback moves, not only like a hunting dog, but like a dog of prey. It is strong willed and confident as well as thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities. Native to Africa, the Ridgeback is well-known for its ability to hunt large game including lions.

In addition to describing the skills and traits of UOIT athletes, the Ridgeback nickname aptly describes the majestic Oak Ridges Moraine just north of campus.

Glenn Coady (pictured) submitted the name Ridgebacks, which was selected from over 300 submissions to become the official nickname of UOIT.

She is fondly remembered for her exceptional leadership qualities, aptitude in the classroom and her overall athletic ability. The well liked veterinarian died an untimely death in the mid 1960’s.

OUA WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

Christie Attwood • RowingChristie Attwood of the UOIT rowing team was been selected as a 2012 recipient. The event honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, fields of study and community involvement. This year’s guest speaker will be dual-sport national athlete, Olympic gold medalist and OUA alumnus Heather Moyse.

Attwood is a great ambassador for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and the sport of rowing.

Being involved with the Ridgebacks rowing program for four years, Attwood has earned a number of achievements. She has raced in every discipline in rowing, having won medals in doubles, lightweight four’s and heavyweight eight’s at invitationals on the OUA circuit. This past season, she was also a member of the crew that participated at the Canadian University Rowing Association national championship, becoming the first UOIT team to compete at a national event.

Christie has also taken on a leadership role with the team, having been the captain from 2010 to 2012 and the rowing executive president from 2011 to 2012.

Outside of rowing, Christie is involved with campus life. She is the Health Science council coordinator and faculty coordinator, as well as a member of the senior class challenge organizing committee.

Last season, she was on the honour roll and won the Rob Millikin award and Dr. Gary Polonsky leadership award at the UOIT athletic banquet.

Shannon Galea (rowing and squash), Rikki Palmateer (hockey), Chrissy Tereshyn (hockey) and Jessica Bosse (rowing) are the Ridgebacks past recipients of the award.

OUA OUTDOOR CLASSIC

OUA Outdoor ClassicBy Shawn Cayley - Metroland Media

Jessica Larabie experienced a couple of firsts last week.

One being more of a milestone, the other providing more of a laugh.

Much to her delight, the Pickering native was the starting goaltender for the UOIT Ridgebacks as they took part in the first ever OUA Winter Classic at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton against the Brock Badgers.

And while they fell short in dropping a 3-2 decision, the experience of taking to the ice in the middle of a football stadium isn’t something that will soon be forgotten.

“It was nerve-wracking. My heart was beating like a million times a minute. It was very scary because we all knew how big this was,” Larabie said when asked about her first impressions while walking out to the ice surface prior to the game. “It took me like five minutes in my goalie pads to walk out to the ice, but it was exciting. All of our families were there, our friends. It was a good experience.”

The other first for Larabie came in the form of an alteration to her equipment. With the snow falling and the blustering wind wrecking havoc, the Ridgebacks netminder needed a little something to keep warm out on the ice.

Enter the helmet toque, something never before tried by Larabie.

“That was interesting. We glued it on so it would stay and it helped it,” she said with a laugh. “It made my head warm.”

While the conditions in warm up made it tough for Larabie to get comfortable in the Ridgebacks net, as the game went on, things cleared up from her view.

However, from the crease on out, the accumulation of snow, the brisk wind and changing light made things tough on the skaters.

“The feet weren’t moving as quick sometimes and the ice was soft,” explained Ridgebacks forward Jennifer Daly. “The puck, sometimes you would get it and lose it in the snow bank in the corner and they would pick it up off you and turn it up ice for a chance.”

Those difficulties, though, were more than worth the hassle, admitted the Ajax resident.

“I love pond hockey,” she said. “It was just amazing. Looking out and up at everything. The Canadian flag in the seats. The snow was just blowing in your face. I was so much more pumped up than usual. It was great to be there.”

Ridgebacks leading scorer Jill Morillo of Whitby shared similar sentiments.

“Walking out, the first initial reaction, you’re just so overwhelmed,” she said in looking back. “Obviously you’re not used to such a big stadium. Just looking around you’re trying to take it all in. It was a great feeling.”

Both of the Ridgebacks goals in the Classic were scored by Vanessa Johnstone.
