DR. JAMIE WILLIAMSDirector of Athletics
Dr. Jamie Williams is the first Director of
Athletics at the Academy of Art University in
San Francisco, the largest and most renowned
private art university in the country.
Dr. Williams is a graduate of the University
of Nebraska, where he was an All-American
and an All-Big Eight Conference football player,
earning an undergraduate degree in Broadcast
Journalism. He continued his education by
completing a Masters of Science in Mass
Communication from San Jose State University
and receiving a Doctorate of Education in
Organization and Leadership from the
University of San Francisco.
Dr. Williams’ philosophy on developing the
athletic program is based on the three A’s:
Academics, the feeder of intellect and wisdom;
Arts, the emancipator of spirit and expression;
and Athletics, the builder of physicality and
courage.
Professionally, Dr. Williams played 12 years
in the National Football League as a tight end
for the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Oilers, Los
Angeles Raiders and St. Louis Cardinals. He
won a Super Bowl Championship in 1990 with
the San Francisco 49ers. After working with
Oscar Award-winning Director, Oliver Stone, to
create the motion picture, Any Given Sunday,
Dr. Williams started his production company
YMotion Media, which is focused on original
sports content.
Dr. Williams is a firm believer in arts and
athletics coexisting like the “warrior-poet” of
yesteryear. He plans for the Academy to make
an immediate impact on the world of colle-
giate athletics. In just under four years, Dr.
Williams has molded the Academy of Art
University’s Athletic Department into a model
program that has grown from no athletics to
sponsoring 14 intercollegiate NCAA Division II
sports. As the program’s student-athletes com-
pete successfully in the classroom and devote
charitable time with the community, Dr.
Williams is on his way to taking the historic
Academy of Art University to a whole new level.
Dr. Williams was raised in Davenport, Iowa,
and now resides on the Peninsula with his wife
and two kids. Dr. Williams is a Star Wars and
Lord of the Rings fan as well as an avid comic
book reader and collector.

A three-year standout at Santa Clara,
Rachel Sherman enters her third season as
head coach of the Urban Knights softball team.
Sherman 2010 ART U squad boasted an
impressive 29-23-1 overall record and their
18-14 Pacific West Conference record earned
them a fifth place finish in the conference
standings. The team featured 23 PacWest
Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll selections (including
two Pitcher of the Week honors) as well as five
post-season awards. Two Urban Knights each
earned 2010 All-PacWest First Team and 2010
All-Region Second Team selections to cap that
season’s success.
In her first season with Academy of Art,

campaign and finished strong by winning five
of its last seven games.
Sherman spent four years as an assistant
coach at UC Davis prior to joining Academy of
Art University.
In 2006, Sherman was invited to play for
the Israeli National Team. Although the team
did not get a chance to compete, Sherman was
honored to have the opportunity to represent
her heritage.
As a senior in 2004, Sherman captured first-
team All-Pacific Coast Softball Conference hon-
ors while leading the league with a .448
average. She helped lead SCU to a second
straight 30-win season and the conference title
that season. Sherman also was selected as her
team’s Offensive Player of the Year as a sopho-
more while tying the single season home run
record.

West Valley Junior College to a 39-4 record. She
was a Second Team Easton All-American, while
also being named a NFCA All-American.

Catcher of the Year award. Sherman was
named to the All-Conference, All-NorCal and
All-State teams her freshman season in 2001.
She batted .474 with 10 homers and led all
California two-year colleges with 59 RBIs.
Originally from Wilcox High School in Santa
Clara, Sherman graduated with a bachelor’s
degree in Studio Art in 2004. She received her
master’s degree in Health, P.E. and Recreation

ships and two Central Coast Section (CCS)
semi-final appearances. LaCrosse was named
First Team All-Conference each of his four
years at Aragon High. He was also named First
Team All-CCS his sophomore, junior and senior
years. In addition, LaCrosse was named to the
All-State Team in his junior and senior seasons.

SEASON PREVIEW / SOFTBALL
knowing the game in and out is a great thing
for our younger players to see. Offensively she
is going to do some great things this season,
keep an eye on her.”
Those two are not the only players to keep an
eye on this upcoming season. With most of
the team returning from last year, and the
addition of solid newcomers, the Knights are
expected to shine in 2011. The team will consist
of seniors Alana Aweau, and Ashley Lokey,
juniors Sierrah Garcia, Melissa Coe and new-
comer Genna Allen, sophomores Jayme Stew-
art, Alyssa Hickey, Kimberly Dauer, Julie Martin,
Nicole Smith, Andrea Hanchey, and freshmen
Lauren Stover, Katie Brooks, Elyse Cordova,
and Lauren Clark-Lewis. The new additions
provide speed, power, and game knowledge
to an already strong lineup.
Head Coach Rachel Sherman is confident in
her new team, and expects great things from
all of her players. “Expect Alana to have an
amazing season. She came back with the right
mind set and will really turn some heads this
year. I also expect newcomer Genna Allen to
lead the team, especially on defense. She has
great range and feel for the game and her
teammates especially look to her on defense.
We are also excited to have Jayme Stewart
back and healthy behind the plate. She con-
trols the game very well and our pitchers love
throwing to her. We have also added another
pitcher to our staff that compliments Sierrah
and Kim very well,” exclaimed Coach Sherman.
After all of the hard work both the coaches
and players have put in during the off-season
and fall ball, the team is now ready for action.
They have poured their heart and soul into
hours of practice, perfecting their game in
every aspect. Although two weeks is not much
time to ready for a full season, the Urban

SEASON PREVIEW / SOFTBALL
As winter fades away and the days start to
warm up, the Academy of Art University wom-
en’s softball team feels the anxiety as their sea-
son sits just around the corner. As they bring
out the new cleats, balls, and bats, excitement
for the new season is on the rise. Now just two
weeks away, the Urban Knights are gearing up
for the start of their 2011 campaign. As they
enter just their third season in existence, they
are more talented and prepared than ever
before.
Head Coach Rachel Sherman returns for her
third season heading the Urban Knights, and
has made several changes in the off-season
preparing for this year. “The team has worked
really hard in the off-season to get stronger,
faster, and really focused on the fundamentals,
executing every situation and loving the pres-
sure situation,” exclaimed Coach Sherman. “I
am very excited for the season and very confi-
dent that we will have an even better season
then we did last year.”
After losing just one senior in 2010, the Knights
are returning 10 players, and have welcomed
five new faces to the roster. In addition to the
already sound defense, the Knights add depth
to the roster, as well as new talent from each
of the newcomers.
Now one step closer to becoming complete
NCAA members, ART U faces new challenges
in their schedule on top of the already com-
petitive PacWest Conference campaign. The
Urban Knights begin their 2011 season by host-
ing Cal State Stanislaus in a single game on
February 2nd. The women then battle Cal
State East Bay before heading to Las Vegas for
the tough Montana State Billings Tournament
starting on February 11th. The MSU Billings
tourney hosts several Division II teams from
across the country. ART U will play five games
in three days in the Desert Classic.
When Academy of Art University returns, they
have a series of challenging Division II CCAA
members to face. They begin with a home
game against CSU Monterey Bay before they
head up to Arcata, CA to play Humboldt State.
Upon their return home from the HSU series,
ART U will host Sonoma State in their last dou-
bleheader before conference play begins.
The Urban Knights kick off conference play
with a game against Dominican University on
March 5th. The Knights will have five more
non-conference games throughout their sea-
son, with the remaining games coming
against all PacWest teams. The women host a
challenging home-stand from March 21st
through the 28th in which they will face the
PacWest Hawaiian teams, including Hawaii
Pacific University, the 2010 Division II
Champions.
On April 9th and 10th, ART U heads to St.
George, UT for one of their most challenging
series of their 2011 season when they play
Dixie State. “I think our most difficult series will
be Dixie State,” said Coach Sherman. “I think
they are a very well rounded program, speed,
power, pitching; very similar to us, so it will be
a great game with a lot of exciting moments.”
After this series, the women return for their
last home-stand of the season where they
host Menlo College, Notre Dame de Namur,
and San Francisco State respectively.
Academy of Art will conclude their season
with a very challenging four game series
against Grand Canyon University on April 30th
and May 1st.
Although the Urban Knights will have a chal-
lenging year ahead of them in terms of sched-
ule, they seem very eager to get things started,
and are confident in the team they have
become. Head Coach Rachel Sherman com-
ments, “I am looking forward to every pitch of
every inning in every game, but if I had to pick
one series I’m most excited about I would have
to say our HPU series. The chance to beat the
defending National Champions is something
anyone can get excited about. We played
them very tough last year and I expect even
more this year with the depth, speed and
power to our lineup.”
The Urban Knights have already begun to
impress their competitors. Last season the
women finished with a 29-23-1 overall record,
nearly doubling their wins from the previous
year. The team has grown tremendously and
they continue to get stronger each year.
ART U is returning their key pitcher, junior Sier-
rah Garcia, who has been outstanding for her
team. Last season, Garcia posted a 19-9 record
with a 2.47 earned run average. In 102 innings
pitches, she gave up 54 walks, while recording
200 strikeouts to lead the PacWest. Garcia also
managed to keep her opponents to a .234 bat-
ting average. “Sierrah has great mechanics and
will lead the staff without a doubt. She has
been working a lot on her mental game and
we have already seen some huge improve-
ments that are making her that much stronger,”
said Coach Sherman.
The Knights’ big slugger, Alana Aweau, returns
for her senior year with more determination to
succeed than ever. In 2010, she had a .354 bat-
ting average with 56 hits including 12 doubles,
11 home runs (1st on the team, 2nd in the Pac-
West), 41 runs batted in, and an impressive
.639 slugging percentage. “Alana is determined
to have a great senior year,” added Sherman.
“Her work ethic this off-season and attention to
Knights softball team is confident that they
are prepared and ready to go out and com-
pete. The Academy of Art University women
will come out attacking, and are ready to
prove to their opponents that they are here to
stay in 2011.

ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY / HISTORY + MISSION
HISTORY
The Academy of Art University was established in San Francisco in
1929 by Richard S. Stephens, a fine art painter who had accepted
the position of Creative Director for Sunset Magazine. Assisted by his wife,
Mrs. Clara Stephens, he opened the new school in a rented loft at 215
Kearny Street to teach advertising art. In a few years, a distinguished fac-
ulty of practicing art and design professionals was assembled and the
school’s philosophy was formulated: hire established professionals to
teach future professionals. In 1933 the curriculum was expanded to
include Fashion Illustration, and in 1936 a Fine Art Department was added.
In 1951, after graduating from Stanford University, Dr. Richard A.
Stephens took over the Presidency from his parents. His vision led to the
expansion of the Academy from an enrollment of fifty students in two
rented loft spaces to a 5,200 student body, with continued expansion of
department majors available. In 1966 the school was incorporated and
granted authority to offer a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art by the Bureau
for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education of the State of
