Motor Transport Top 100 supplement is freewith the 4 July issue of Motor Transport

If the MT Awards is the way in whichMotorTransport celebrates the industryssuccesses, then the Top is the means by

which we measure that success. The Top started in the early 98s as

the Top 5: in 986, the top comprisedNFC, United Transport International,Transport Development Group (name infull, youll note), P&O European Transport

Services, Freightliners, Lex (Transport & Distribution),United Parcels, Wincanton Transport, Bayford & Co, andMitchell Cotts Transportation (UK). Clearly time and thenever-ending appetite for mergers and acquisitionsmeans only one of those brands Wincanton makes

this years Top .Indeed, the majority of that first Top 5 no longer tradeunder their then name or at all. Two names do stand outthough: Turners and Suttons, boasting turnovers of6.m and 4.6m respectively 25 years ago.

The Top 5 became the Top in 995: once againNFC was top, having quadrupled its turnover to nearly

2bn. At the opposite end of the spectrum, MichaelGerson was th on the list with a turnover of 9.5m.Sixteen years later, a transport operator needs a 6m

turnover to make the grade. While the Top is based on turnover, clearly profit

remains the ultimate judge of the success of anybusiness: and transport operators face more challengesthan most in controlling costs, maintaining cashflow, and finding profitable work.

While the top in 995 boasted a combined turnoverof 8bn, this years top s total is just 9bn; similarlythe total profit for the top 6 years ago was just morethan 35m, while this years it is just over 4m.Neither turnover nor profit have increased that much,

highlighting how much more efficient operators are atdelivering transport solutions to customers customers whom, it must be said, continue theirdownward pressure on rates.

Transport is a tough job, and its only got tougherover the years. No matter where you are on the Top ,it is only going to get tougher still in the future.

Compiling the Motor Transport Top100 is always an interesting task. Theanticipation o waiting to see whichsmaller operators have made it intothe rankings each year, and to see

how the scue between the big boys resolvesitsel, makes it a ascinating read.

With the removal of TDG from the Top 10, dueto it being snapped up by Norbert Dentressangle, and Royal Mail no longer reporting Parcelforceas a separate unit (see notes), the Top 10 has two

new entrants for the first time in several years:UK Mail and Yodel (still registered as HomeDelivery Network at Companies House).

Meanwhile, new entrants include AcumenLogistics, Wm Armstrong, Elite Transport Servicesand Montgomery Transport.

In 100th place this year is AKW Group with its15.9m turnover, which means the entry-bar tothe Top 100 has been raised from last years 14.2mrom Pollock (Scotrans).

Despite the average turnover of our Top 100operators falling from 150.9m to 148.2m thisyear, the average profit rose to just over 6m from5.9m last year. And better still, the average profitmargin for our Top 100 was just over 4% comparedto 2.73% last year.

As usual, the Top 100 has been compiled usingthe most recent set of accounts published atCompanies House for each operator. The rankingsare a measure o the largest and most successulthird-party road transport operators in the UK and,as such, we do not include own-account operators.Where possible, we strip out any revenue derivedfrom non-transport activities such as vehicle main-tenance, manufacturing or vehicle sales. The noteson p15 explain our thought process behind someo the trickier entries, so please reer to the notes

as you read this years Top 100.And finally, the observant among you will notice

that the 2011 Motor Transport Top 100 has beenpublished somewhat earlier than the previousyears rankings. We aim to publish the Top 100every summer rather than at the year-end. Becauseof this change, there are about 40 entries thatremain the same as the 2010 tables as those firmshave not published new accounts since the lastTop 100.

    Cmpiing the Tp 100

While writing this introduction,I am reading the MT head-line concerning the ortuneso a FTSE-listed, multi-billionpound logistics company. A

giant o the industry, with massive knowledge andexpertise, it has made a multi-million pound loss.I companies such as these are struggling, what

are the chances o survival or any operator? The MT Top 100 is designed to assess the per-formance of this years 100 largest operators, manyo whom have progressed despite appalling eco-nomic pressures. MAN is thereore very pleasedto sponsor such a review.

The future of the modern operator will be deter-mined by more precise management of manyoperational variables, not least of which will befuel consumption and driver competence. Vehiclecapital costs or many operators have always hada high focus, however, the total cost of ownershipof a fleet is now more important, with fuel anddriver accounting for more than 70% of total costs.

In many cases, the cost of the hardware is lessthan 10% o total costs.

Todays trucks are increasingly digital, with newsystems enabling manufacturers to offer vital fleetinformation to owners in a real time, transparentand positive way. Vehicle utilisation, driver per-formance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissionscan all be analysed to help maximise proit. Thisinormation is vital because a 2% to 3% ROS, theindustry average outside the Top 100, is not a rec-

ipe for survival. Developing operating best practices,to increase asset-utilisation, operational efficiencyand proit, has never been more important.

Alongside developing systems such as MANEcoStyle and working with our operators, MANwill continue to support constructive lobbying ofthe government. We want to see a fair and properreward for good practice in the transport industryand a change to the poor image that has doggedour sector or too long.

Partnership and active information exchangeis the way forward, and we will pursue those withdetermination.

Andrew Malcolm has a strong senseof tradition. His father, Donald, took over a family business con-sisting of a single truck and horseand cart at the age o 14 and built

a strong Scottish transport business in con-struction and haulage. But while Andrewsconversation is littered with fond memories ofhis ather, he has an equally clear vision in hisrole as chie executive o what is needed bothtoday and in the uture.

The Malcolm Group has expanded and flour-ished under Malcolm. Natural growth oppor-tunities have seen the emphasis shift a little

away from construction, towards haulage andwarehousing, and there is now a booming railinterest as well. The construction operationstill accounts for 40% of the business, and isclose to Malcolms heart, but the distributionoperations appear to keep him busier and are,in a sense, where his own journey with thebusiness started.

First veDad was a construction man through andthrough, he recalls, and his first love was thetipper business. The general transport sidewas always there and kept itsel busy, but wasnever the real ocus o his attention, he says.

I joined the firm officially at 16, the afternoon

after sitting my last O-level, and I began bydriving the tractor and brush around the yardto keep things clean.

A workshop apprenticeship, driver trainingscheme, traffic office work and depot manage-ment career saw Malcolm grounded at a verypractical level across the operation. With hisfathers continuing interest in construction, itfell to Andrew to look after and expand thedistribution side o the business. In the spaceof 45 years, the company has been listed on theStock Exchange and bought back into familyownership. From his head office near Glasgowsinternational airport, Malcolm now overseesa business running 400 trucks, more than 5million ft2 of warehousing (with a further 1.5million ft2 under management for third parties)

and an expanding rail-head activity.I started in the days o the real world, hesays. Our belief then was if you couldnt affordit, you didnt run it. It worked then and it workstoday.

He believes we are probably not out of therecession. We were living in a false economy, and I hope it never comes back. It wasntsustainable. Were on a slow road to recovery, and I see some opportunities ahead, but I alsosee some disappointments for people if theydont take a realistic approach.

So, apart from the Malcolm dynasty itself(Andrew has two sons working in the company, taking the same route he took), what has beenthe underlying plan that has seen the company

consistently in the Motor Transport Top 100?I probably shouldnt say this, he says, with amischievous smile, but I dont think about the

Top 100 until the day it appears. Its importantfor the industry to measure itself like this, andits flattering to be listed. But until the copy ofMTdrops on my desk, I dont think about it.

The smile grows wider as he leans orwardand confides: Mind you, Id care a whole lot

i we werent in it!Simpe and directWhere then does the Malcolm Group go next,we ask?

Again, the answers are simple and direct:Anyone can move goods rom A to B, its justa question of how good you can get at doing it.For us, that means the right levels of controland efficiency in looking after customers.Everyone here, no matter where they fit intothe operation, knows that we ocus on servicefirst, service second and service third. Wevespent lifetimes building that, but it will all cometumbling down in a day i anyone in the busi-ness stops caring.

It is probably the reason that Malcolm sayswith such certainty that his group will neverhave the biggest leet in the country. He has

    Service,service,

serviceMalcolm Group is a regular on the Top 100 list. Chief executiveAndrew Malcolm reveals the secrets of the groups success to MT

a passionate belief in understanding what isgoing on in every part of the business andsharing that with those around him. And thatincludes customers: Too many people in trans-port, he asserts, tell customers what theythink they want to hear. My dads philosophy

was simple, and its as true today as when hefirst said it: tell customers what we will do, andthen make sure we do it.

Its a philosophy that has seen the MalcolmGroup happily embrace technology. TakeMANs EcoStyle driver and vehicle performancemonitoring system, for instance, he says.Thats in my mind right now because we haveordered a new fleet of MANs, although we havesimilar packages on our other trucks. EcoStylegives us real time, usable information thathelps us to ensure that we do what weve prom-ised customers we will do.

It also gives us terriic day-to-day manage-ment information on the drivers and how theyare doing, so we can help the underachievers

and acknowledge those who consistently driveeconomically and safely. The performancefigures go up every week where all the drivers

can see them. That has produced a very natu-ral and healthy competitive spirit among themalready.

Malcolms warehouses also benefit fromstate-of-the-art management systems allowingflexibility of customer service and the controls

and efficiencies Malcolm holds dear. Its aormula that clearly works. Were quick at taking the decisions our

technology indicates are needed, he says, although I always want us to be even quickerto implement them.

Custmer fcusAs the conversation concludes, we return toMalcolms core focus: customers. Its interest-ing, he says, that serious customers increas-ingly want to know more about us. They wantto understand how we are doing and, althoughthey will always want the best rate, they wantto know were profitable and our business asa key supplier to them is sustainable. That has

to be a good thing.Malcolm preers not to talk about a rate orthe job, but to demonstrate how he will deliver

the cheapest spend over the course of a yearfor his customers. And as he puts it: Thatsabout a lot more than just a basic rate for thejob. The rate is the rate what makes the differ-ence is how you manage your own efficien-cies.

Were not in the business of grabbing everyoffer that comes along. Too many hauliers areworking for nothing and that does nobodyany good. I need to generate a sustainableincome for all my employees, and you dontdo that by chasing rates ever lower.

Its an approach that has resulted in anothergood year for the Malcolm Group, which hasinvested further in its systems and operatingassets. We have to be profitable, he says. Ifwere not profitable, were not in business. Therewas a time when we expanded too quickly andwe lost some of our discipline and efficiencies. That wont happen again. Now we look forcustomers that we can have a long-term relation-ship o trust with; and we stick to what we are

good at. And then try to get even better at it.AndMTwouldnt bet against him doing justthat.

Paving the way frThe wealth of informationavailable from modern digitaltruck systems can, whenused efficiently and sensibly, help propel operators intothe Top 100, MAN chiefexecutive Des Evans tellsMT

In his introduction to this Top 100 supple-ment, MAN chie executive Des Evansurges operators to consider the muchwider issue o the total cost o ownershiprather than simply capital costs in isola-

tion. He claims that developing operatingbest practices, to increase asset-utilisation,operational eciency and proft has neverbeen more important.

As thats precisely the ethos the MotorTransport Top 100 celebrates and endeavoursto encourage, we decided to take a closer lookat the total cost of ownership. Is it simply amarketing red herring, or are there ways ofmanaging costs to break into a new level ofoperating profit? Right now, industry averagesfor return on sales are around the 2%-3% mark:in almost any other industry sector that wouldhave most business leaders reaching for thelight switch.

At its core, much of what Evans espouses isbased on the things he has experienced in nearly40 years in the business things he has soughtto improve.

Does that make it a biased view? No. As with

so many visionary formulae for success, thereis more than a decent measure of common

sense in it (an essential ingredient, we wouldsuggest, in an industry that doesnt suffer foolsgladly).

Evans primary plea is for operators to usethe wealth o good, usable inormation that isincreasingly available from digital truck systems. Most manufacturers are at varying stages ofdevelopment of such technology, although

Evans would claim MAN EcoStyle (now stand-ard on all new MAN trucks) is as developed, useul and user-riendly as any.

The key t successThese systems deliver precisely the type ofinformation that can propel a business into theTop 100 on the back of real bottom line improve-ments and, more important, keep it there.Quick fixes are not what the industry needs. We need solid, reliable systems, developed bypeople who understand road transport and thenew-generation vehicles available to operators,he tellsMT.

So far so good, but what exactly do futureTop 100 companies look or? Its obvious that

a mix of driver and vehicle performance is amust. Key to success, however, is what is thendone with that information. For many compa-

nies, driver league tables seem a natural nextstep; perhaps even reward programmes torecognise the high achievers. Its an area thathas Evans almost hopping from one foot to theother with fervour; his eyes light up as heasserts: Thats exactly the issue. You can putEcoStyle on every truck in the country [it iscompatible with any make], but it wont be truly

effective until you tackle the most importantelement in the whole equation: the driver.Again, Evans has been near-evangelical in

the setting up of the MAN ProfiDrive drivertraining scheme. It is offered to every MANoperator, and those who have taken up thewhole package have achieved demonstrablebeneits.

Among the Top 100 companies, operatorsof the size and reputation of Malcolm Logistics,Grocontinental and Nightfreight have beenamong the forerunners in benefitting fromthe MAN programmes.

Leading network solutions providerNightfreight has more than 500 vehicles fittedwith MAN EcoStyle, covering a range of trucks

rom 7.5-tonne rigids up to maximum weighttractor units.Nightfreight (GB) chief executive Ian SmithIan Smith is seeing dual savings and reduced accident damage costs

    the next tp 100?

says: After a review of the various systems thatwould work across the range of truck sizes andmakes we run, we opted for MAN. Wed setourselves the challenge of increasing fuel effi-ciency and reducing accident damage twovery tough, but very important economic objec-tives. Today, we are seeing both fuel savingsand reduced accident damage costs.

Interestingly, meeting those objectives wasachieved as much by the resulting culturechange the MAN system brought to our organ-isation as by the system itself. While the systemdoes everything promised and more, we didnot expect the almost seamless and painlesschanges it would bring to our way of monitor-ing and managing our vehicle and driveroperations.

Rea-time infrmatinThe important thing to understand aboutMAN EcoStyle is that it is a reporting systemthat doesnt just give data: it gives real-timeinormation. And it gives that inormation inan easily assimilated ormat and style.

Grocontinental operations director HughJones sees wider beneits. In terms o lettingus look at our efficiency levels, every minute

of every day and right across the fleet, its becomeindispensable. We monitor every individualtrucks mpg and rate the drivers performance. We share that data among drivers and get excel-lent feedback. Its great because its having abeneficial influence, not only on fuel, but onrepair costs as well.

It gives us huge advantages in delivering

our Driver CPCs, where EcoStyle and its datafeature prominently. Our CPC delivery getsbetter and better, and that brings benefits allround. Top 100 company or not, I would saywe all need to embrace this type of informationtool. I dont think we have a choice. We aredoing it and can see significant improvementsin business perormance at every level.

Steve Sugden of Malcolm Logistics is equallyupbeat. As a major logistics operation, we findthe MAN programme allows us to continuouslymonitor driver performance and driving style, and we are then able to target drivers who allbelow the required standard and help them toretrain where appropriate. It also allows us tobenchmark vehicle performance, increase fuel

consumption averages and set minimumtargets in areas such as idle time, harsh brakingand use o cruise control.

There are plenty of companies outside theTop 100 making giant strides with the use ofdriver training and telematic monitoring. J&Bruns tippers on construction work in the WestCountry and was doubtul that it would bene-fit, especially as its experienced drivers weresceptical. However, after taking part in MANsearly system trials, the company found its driv-ers had been converted, and fuel savings ofabout 20% were achieved.

At the start of 2, DHL sold itscontainer arm to Maritime Transport, and its DayDefinite Domestic business, a division of DHL Express, to
