2012 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Head Coach Larry Friend

Larry FriendFourth Year Head Coach

(17-34-6)15th season at Air Force

USAFA 1985

Larry Friend enters his fourth season as head coach of the United States Air Force Acad-emy women’s soccer program. He is the second head coach to lead the Falcons in their 19-year history. Friend recently guided the Falcons to a 6-10-3 record in 2011. It was the program’s sec-ond-winningest season in the past eight years. Th e squad featured four-year all-conference honoree and 2011 all-region selection forward Bridgett Murphy and freshman midfi elder McKenna Fox, who scored the most goals by a Falcon since 2001. Th e Falcons continued to ex-cel in the classroom, garnering eight academic all-conference selections with Murphy garner-ing all-district honors for the third-straight year. Friend had the unenviable task of compet-ing in a tough Mountain West Conference his fi rst year in 2009 with one of the youngest teams in the nation. Th e 2009 Falcons featured 12 freshmen and 11 sophomores, and just three up-perclassmen. With the lack of experienced play-ers, the Falcons posted a 2-15-1 record. Sopho-more forward Bridgett Murphy was one of AFA’s bright spots, earning her second All-Mountain West Conference honor. Th e bumps and bruises of playing with such a young team in 2009 paid off the following season, as a more experienced 2010 squad im-proved by six wins, to a succussful 8-9-2 record, despite having no seniors on the team. Th e eight wins were the most since 2001 and the program had its fewest losses ever in the Div. I era. Air Force scored 21 goals on the season, doubling the 10 goals scored in 2009. Th e Falcon defense had a fantastic season, allowing 0.91 goals per game and producing seven shutouts. Th e 0.91 GAA average was the second-lowest in school history and the lowest since joining the MW. Friend was an assistant at Air Force from 1992-1996 and 2002-2008. He started the wom-

en’s soccer program with former head coach Marty Buckley while on active duty in 1992. In their second season, the team broke into the top 20 of the NCAA Division II weekly rank-ings. Th ey continued to improve each year with consistent top 20 NCAA rankings. By the fourth season, the 1995 team achieved a 14-3-2 record with an NCAA Division II ranking of seventh in the nation. Th ey missed the NCAA champi-onship round of eight by one slot, but produced their fi rst All American selection that season. In 1996, Friend helped Buckley and the Falcons transition from Division II to Division I. Th ey coached the team to its fi rst Division I tournament appearance in the Western Athletic Conference Championships. In 1997, Friend re-turned to his fl ying career. Aft er 12 years as an assistant coach, Friend looked forward to the challenge as head coach. Friend feels that the Air Force Academy wom-en’s soccer program has and will continue to produce offi cers who are prepared to serve in the United States Air Force. “Participating in a competitive team envi-

ronment provides our young women with the tools and life lessons necessary to lead others in the Air Force,” Friend said. “Many past gradu-ates have gone on to lead as pilots, doctors, law-yers, in aircraft maintenance, as general aides and numerous other exciting careers in the Air Force.” Th e team has competed in the Mountain West Conference since 1999. Th e conference is nationally competitive and normally ranked in the top 10 out of all NCAA Division I confer-ences. Th e Falcons have struggled to meet this competitive challenge, but Friend is looking to-wards changing that. “Th e Academy is a tough environment that can be taken advantage of only by individuals seeking a real challenge rewarded by incredible opportunities,” Friend said. “Our players are ready and excited to expand their challenge to the soccer fi eld.” Friend calls Columbia, Md., his hometown. His father, Joseph F. Friend, moved the family to Columbia in 1969 and retired from the Navy in 1971. Friend graduated from Wilde Lake High School in 1980, where he was team captain of the soccer team and a member of the 1976 state championship team. Friend went on to the Air Force Academy and played for coach Luis Sagas-tume as a four-year starter and team captain on the men’s team. His teams compiled a 46-24-7 record, during which time he earned all-league honors four times and was selected to the all-midwest region team his junior year. Friend is ranked third in the men’s program for career assists and 20th for most points overall. He was selected by his teammates as Best Off ensive and Most Inspirational player in two diff erent sea-sons. Friend continued his soccer career aft er graduating from the Academy in 1985 to include playing overseas for the Japanese team Sukazan

while on active duty. He also competed for four years on the all-Air Force soccer team in the late 80s. He captained the team twice during his playing career and led them to a pair of inter-service championships. Friend was selected to the United States All-Armed Forces Team all four years. He was selected team captain of the U.S. Armed Forces team and led them to a 1990 North American Championship in Victoria, Canada. Th is victory qualifi ed the U.S. for the 1991 Military World Football Championship in Holland. Friend ended his playing career aft er the Military World Championships in 1991 and moved on to the coaching ranks. He received his United States Soccer Federation “A” license in 1994 and his Federation Goalkeeper license in 2007. Friend has worked with the state and region Olympic Development Programs since 1992. He has coached numerous competitive and developmental soccer teams in Colorado and Maryland. He has also been an assistant coach with the Air Force Academy men’s soccer

program for two seasons under coach Sagas-tume. Friend retired from the Air Force in 2005 aft er 20 years of service. He fl ew over 2,000 hours as an instructor pilot on search and rescue and VIP helicopters. Friend completed helicop-ter pilot training at Fort Rucker Army Post, Ala., in 1986 where he was selected as “top stick” in both the contact and fi nal phase of training. In 1987, Friend began a two-year tour at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, as a combat search and rescue pilot with the 33rd Air Rescue Squadron. He was credited with two Joint Chiefs of Staff contingency (JCS) missions in the Phil-ippines and one life saved in Japan. In 1989, Friend was assigned to the 41st Air Rescue Squadron at Patrick AFB, Fla., as an in-structor pilot and NASA shuttle liaison offi cer. Friend fl ew numerous rescue support fl ights for space shuttle launches and supplied navigation stations in the Bahamas. He was lauded for his eff orts by the Secretary of Defense on a highly sensitive JCS mission and credited with assist for

a life saved off the coast of Florida. In 1992, Friend had his fi rst stint coaching soccer and instructing at the Air Force Acad-emy. Friend was honored with the Outstanding Military Educator of the Year award in 1995. Th is is the highest award the Academy bestows on its instructors. In 1997, Friend was assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron at Andrews AFB, Md., to fl y Bell UH-1 Hueys. His unit supported classi-fi ed emergency action programs for the national capital region. He also fl ew VIPs such as the President of Egypt and the Vice President of the United States. He returned to the Academy in 2001. Friend earned a master’s degree in sport administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1994. His professional military edu-cation includes Squadron Offi cer School in 1989 and Air Command and Staff College in 1999. Friend and his wife, Maribeth, have been married 23 years and have three children, Corey, Carina, and Felicia.

2012 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Season Outlook

With a strong returning group and an incoming class ready to immediately con-tribute, Air Force women’s soccer has big aspirations for the 2012 season. Air Force returns 16 letterwinners in-cluding eight players with starting experi-ence off the 2011 squad, which went 6-10-3 and a fi ft h-place fi nish in the Mountain West Conference. In addition, the Falcons welcome 11 talented newcomers that will look to fi ll in the gaps left by a graduat-ing 2011 senior class that featured a trio of four-year starters and a three-year starter. Gone is the senior class, which fea-tured four-time all-conference honoree in Bridgett Murphy and two-time team cap-tain in midfi elder Krystin Shanklin. Th e Falcons also lost two starters in their back-fi eld in co-captains Cassie Wilson and Mea-gan Eissele. Th e Falcons are confi dent they will have more than enough fi repower return-ing, led by a strong senior class and emerg-ing junior and sophomore core. Th e Fal-cons return three of their top four scorers

from last season, including sophomore midfi elder McKenna Fox and senior for-ward Stephanie Patterson. Air Force re-turns junior Kelly Stambaugh and sopho-more Hannah Schwartz in goal. Th e duo combined to start 18 of 19 matches for the Falcons last season. Midfi elder Sophia Lockerby and lead backer Kim Koeppen were chosen as team captains and will be called upon to provide leadership for the 2012 squad.

Head Coach Larry Friend took a moment from preparing for the upcoming season to talk about his 2012 team.

Q : How is the team coming together dur-ing preseason practices?

A: Our returners have come back fi t and in shape for this season. Our upperclassmen have done a good job of quickly getting the freshmen integrated into the program and allowing them to compete right away.

Th e season is starting much quicker for us than usual. Our practice time has been a little limited with Basic Cadet Training (BCT) being pushed back a week this year. In addition, the NCAA approved an earlier start to the season so we’re trying to get the team to gel in a shorter time frame, so that’s been a little diffi cult.

Q: Will it be tough replacing the veteran graduating class of 2012?

A: Without a doubt. We will miss the class of 2012. Th ey provided a lot of leader-ship and will be hard to replace.

Q: What areas do you see as team strengths this season?

A: Our team personality emerged during the Spring and we’re encouraged about that. Our team strength this year is our team co-hesion. Th ey are a resilient group. Th ey are determined to get better and have the belief that they can do it. Th e motto this year is

Page 11: 2012 Air Force Women's Soccer Media Guide

-- 9 --

2012 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Season Outlook

O.N.E. ...Resilient, Determined, Belief.

Q: Although you still haven’t played a match, are there areas you see for im-provement?

A: Th ere is always room for improvement. We’re using a lot more video during prac-tices and this has enabled us to teach more tactical awareness in a way they can see. Th e coaching staff would also like to see more improvement on the defensive end.

Q: What will it take for the Falcons to have success in 2012?

A: We want to be in a good position to be in every game this year and maintain our focus for the entire match.

Q: What are the team goals for this season?

A: We are shooting for a winning season and a berth into the Mountain West Tour-nament.

Q: Tell us about this year’s seniors?

A: We have a solid group of seniors. Th ey’re committed to the challenge of a successful season. Kim Koeppen will anchor our de-fense and we look for Stephanie Patterson

to have a breakout senior season on of-fense. Eryn Avjian will play both defender and forward for us this season and Sophia Lockerby has the chance to seize more con-trol in the middle with the graduation of Krystin Shanklin. Charity Blanton returns to the team aft er taking her junior year off to focus on academics. She will add depth to our goalkeeping group.

Q: How is the junior class?

A: Th e junior class is a very talented group of soccer players. Leah Bratt has been a two-year starter for us and we look for her to show continued improvement. Kelly St-ambaugh has been a solid presence in goal for us the past two years and she is being challenged to improve. Loren Catchpole is looking to shake off some injuries early in her career and will be looking to play more minutes in the backfi eld. Kaleigh Moses has also been a two-year starter in the mid-dle for us. Megan Dozier and Ariel Saltin give us two proven and capable scorers up top.

Q: And the sophomores?

A: Th e sophomore class also showed they have some talent last year and should be much improved with a year of collegiate ex-perience under their belts. McKenna Fox had one of the best scoring seasons by a Falcon in recent years and will look to keep

it up. Tory Gullo will move to the midfi eld this year and Felicia Sturgeon gives us add-ed depth in the middle. Kylie Williamson started 16 games in the backfi eld for us and Hannah Schwartz also saw action in goal for us last season. Jackie Jacobs is also a new addition at midfi eld.

Q: How are the freshmen coming along?

A: We have what we feel is another strong and talented freshman class. Th ey’re just coming from BCT, so we’ve only seen them a couple times at practice. But envision several making immediate impacts. Th e 2012 freshman class consists of forward Al-lie Baumgarten, forward Rebecca Beasley, defender Shannon Boler, midfi elder Katie Case, defender Christy Cooper, midfi elder Sarah Falvey, MF/F Bailee Harnett, goal-keeper Becky Murphy, forward Ally Swift and MF/F Asia Williams.

Q: Th oughts on this year’s schedule?

A: We have a very challenging schedule. One of the toughest we’ve ever had. We’re going to have to rise up to the challenge.

2012 Air Force Women’s Soccer • MW Info/MW 2011 Recap

On July 1, 1999, the Mountain West Confer-ence began offi cial operations with a membership composed of eight Division I-A institutions. Th e conference features the Air Force Academy, Boise State Univsity, Colorado State University, Fresno State University, University of Nevada, University of New Mexico, San Diego State University, UNLV, and University of Wyoming. Th e University of Ha-waii is a football-only member. Th e fi rst eight member schools collectively decided to form a smaller conference and foster the traditional rivalries that were born in the ‘70s and ‘80s. BYU, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming were charter members of the Western Athletic Conference when it was founded in 1962, and Colorado State (1968), San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980), were long-standing members heading into the 1990s. UNLV joined the group in 1996 and TCU in 2005. In 2011, the Mountain

West lost BYU and Utah but gained Boise State. Fresno State, Nevada and Hawai’i (football only) join the conference in 2012-13, while TCU departs for the Big 12 Conference. San Jose State and Utah State join the conference in 2013-14, while Boise State and San Diego State are slated to depart for the Big East Conference. Th e MWC crowns champions in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, wom-en’s soccer, soft ball, women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track

2012 Air Force Women’s Soccer • The Air Force Academy

The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience de-signed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science de-gree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Course of Study Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience is integrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate. The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete requirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include manage-ment, aeronautical engineering, foreign area stud-ies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics.

Faculty Composition The majority of the Academy’s faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of perfor-mance and dedication. Each has at least a master’s degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study. About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of disciplinary and educational expertise and provide academic stability and con-tinuity. Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part of their officer develop-ment. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several distinguished vis-iting professors and endowed professors who serve one or more years. Officers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are also members of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year.

Athletic Program The Academy’s athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercol-legiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year.

Military Education and Training An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues through-out the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organizational leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills. Ca-dets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers. Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the mili-tary role in United States society as well as the mis-sion and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills and ju-niors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force. The Academy offers courses in flying, naviga-tion, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first sum-mer. Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets’ second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with Airmen in an op-erational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall para-chute training. During their last two summers, all cadets are of-fered leadership training as supervisors or instruc-tors in the summer programs listed above. Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs available.

Nominations Nominations to the Academy may be obtained through a congressional sponsor or by meeting eli-gibility criteria in other categories of competition established by law. For information on admission procedures, write to HQ USAFA/RRS; 2304 Cadet Drive, Suite 200; USAF Academy, CO 80840-5025 or go to:

History of The Academy

In 1948, a board of leading civil-

ian and military educators was ap-

pointed to plan the curriculum for an

academy that would meet the needs

of the newly established Air Force.

The board determined that Air Force

requirements could not be met by ex-

panding the other service academies

and recommended an Air Force Acad-

emy be established without delay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the Air

Force W. Stuart Symington appointed

a commission to assist in selecting a

site and on April 1, 1954, President

Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized

creation of the United States Air Force

Academy. After considering 580 sites

in 45 states, the commission narrowed

the choice to three locations. The

summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air

Force Harold Talbott selected a site

near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colo-

rado contributed $1 million toward

purchase of the property.

In July 1955, the first Academy

class entered interim facilities at

Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while

construction began. It was sufficiently

completed for occupancy by the cadet

wing in late August 1958. Initial con-

struction cost was $142 million.

Women entered the Academy on

June 28, 1976, as members of the class

of 1980.

A retired Air Force brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior to his re-tirement from active duty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavily involved in Academy athletics before becoming director of athletics. He was the Academy’s faculty athletics representative from 1996-2004 and was a long-time member of the board of directors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Association.

Since becoming the director of athletics, Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkable feats. In 2007, the Academy was one of only three schools (Michigan State and Boston College) to reach post-season play in football (2007), men’s bas-ketball and ice hockey (2006-07). It marked the first time a service academy has ever had a team compete in the post-season in all three sports.

In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketball team has played in another NCAA tournament and the National Invitational Tourna-ment’s Final Four. The ice hockey team has won the conference championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament five of the last six years. Mueh was on the selection committee that hired current head coach Frank Serratore and led the Academy’s move into the Athletic Hockey As-sociation.

The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, has gone through a major overhaul under Mueh. He led the transition from the retirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall

mark and a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. The program has gone to a school-record five consecutive bowl games and averaged over 9,000 bowl tickets sold during that time.

Mueh has been just as successful behind the scenes with the administration of the department. Mueh restructured the department with an inter-nal/external model that has streamlined resources and made the department more effective from top to bottom. In addition, he has the department on course to become a federally chartered non-profit organization which will lead to more fund-raising opportunities.

Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA En-dowment and the announcement of the Holaday Athletic Center, an indoor training facility. The $15 million facility was completed in July 2011.

Mueh has also been active within the confer-ence and the NCAA. He was recently selected to be part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been active on the NCAA’s aca-demics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golf committee and the region 7 postgraduate scholarship committee. Mueh has been equally active within the conference on various leader-ship committees. He is currently on the awards and recognition committee and has previously served on the joint council executive committee, and committees on championships, television and sportsmanship.

Before assuming his duties as vice dean at the Academy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Acad-emy, a position he held since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets annu-ally.

Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Ger-many, and emigrated to the United States in 1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as a member of the Academy’s eighth graduating class, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1966. While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In his

junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He was a first-team all-league selection in 1965.

Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments in intelligence before attending the University of Wisconsin where he earned his master’s degree in chemistry in 1970. He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wis-consin in 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War Col-lege.

Between earning the two degrees, Mueh re-turned to the Academy as an instructor in the department of chemistry from 1970-72. He also served as assistant soccer coach and played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Denver during those two years, leading the Inter-nationals to the Colorado state title in 1971. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic of Viet-nam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and 1973.

After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh re-turned to the Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He remained at the Acad-emy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense In-telligence Agency at the Pentagon.

In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, department of chemistry, before being se-lected for his position of permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry in 1987. As faculty athletics representative, he was active in both the Western Athletic Conference and Moun-tain West Conference, and was the Academy’s representative on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only faculty athletics representa-tive on the team. He competes in golf, racquet-ball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sports through-out his tenure, beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility committee, officer rep-resentative to the men’s golf team and five years as the officer representative to the football team.

Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax of Cincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kris-tine, Kurt and Deborah.

Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as

the Air Force Academy’s.

The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical

conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for

officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to

build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program:

intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA-

sanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation.

Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-

country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse,

rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling.

The Academy fields women’s teams in basketball, cross-country, fenc-

ing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving,

soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two

non-NCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs

compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Confer-

ence. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Boise

State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai’i (football only), Nevada,

New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV and Wyoming. All sports also

compete against non-conference opponents, including many national-

lyranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief’s

Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy.

The Falcons have won the trophy 18 times, which is more than any

other academy. The winner of the annual rivalry visits the White House

to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive build-

ings in the country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly

endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396

feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The

structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena

and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating

capacity of more than 9,000.

Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity

of 2,470, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and

field competitions.
