2012 S EASON PREV I EWFollowing one of the best seasons in program history,

head coach Joe Jaketic will have his work cut out for him this year, as the Vikings will have four newcomers and just one senior on the roster for the 2012 season.

“I am so excited for the new season to start. We will have a different look this year, but I am excited to see what it brings,” Jaketic said. “Every runner on the team is ready to compete and excited for the new season.”

Rachel Niemi, CSU’s lone senior, will serve as co-cap-tain during the 2012 campaign, along with sophomore Katie Webb.

Niemi and Webb will be joined by junior Ashley Ber-lin and sophomores Tori Holt and Angela Kirila as the veterans of the 2012 squad. Combined, this group ran in 40 races last season, and led the Vikings to a fourth place finish at the Horizon League Champi-onship, the best finish in program history.

“I’m really not sure what to expect this year hav-ing lost such a large senior class last season,” Jaketic said. “We are lacking some depth this year so we will have to be very careful when it comes to injuries because that could really hurt us. Our strength this season will be running as a team and encouraging each other during practices and durive live meets.”

CSU’s newcomers include three freshmen and one sophomore transfer. This quartet will add depth to the Viking roster and provide multiple scoring opportunities for CSU at meets throughout the sea-son.

“The newcomers all came in with a lot of enthusi-asm and were ready to get to work. The adjustment for most newcomers is when classes start and hav-

ing to handle both their academic and athletic commit-ments, but I have no doubts that this group will be able to handle anything that is thrown at them,” Jaketic said.

The Vikings will open the 2012 campaign in the be-ginning of September, and will compete in seven races before the Horizon League Championship. The highlight of the first seven races will be the Walt Disney World Classic on October 6 - a race that is run at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Re-sort in Orlando, Fla.

This year’s Horizon League Championship will be hosted by Milwaukee and will take place at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course on October 27.

head coach // seventh season

Entering his seventh season at the helm of the cross country team, Joe Jaketic will have his work cut out for him, as he continues to build the Viking program into one of the top teams in the Horizon League. A Cleveland State graduate in 1972, Jaketic has never been able to shake his enthusiasm for the Vikings, and that has truly carried over into his head coaching career.

Last year, Jaketic guided the squad to its best season in program history, culminating with a fourth place finish at the Horizon League Championship. CSU’s fourth place finish at the 2011 champion-ship marked the highest finish in program history.

Over his seven years at the helm of the cross country team, Jaketic has continued to build the program into a Horizon League con-tender year-in and year-out. He has worked hard on the recruiting trail to bring in student-athletes that not only succeed on the cross country course, but also in the classroom since he has a personal philosophy that academics come first in his program.

During his tenure, 22 student-athletes have earned John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors, including seven who earned the accolade during all four years of their career. Since the 2006 season, the Vikings have earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors four times (2011, 2010, 2009, 2008), been named Cleveland State’s ‘Best of the Best’ three times (2011, 2010, 2006) and won the Academic Progress Rate Award twice (2009, 2008).

Prior to becoming head coach, Jaketic served as the equipment manager for CSU athletics. He retired from that position in Decem-ber of 2008 after 37 years. Jaketic ran cross country at Maple Heights High School and spent time running at Ohio University before transferring to run cross country and track at Cleveland State.

While a student at CSU, Jaketic was a member of the Viking cross country team and spent two years in the equipment room as a part-time job before being offered the equipment manager position in 1972.

kat e PattoN

assistant coach // fouRth season

Kate Patton is in her fourth season as an assistant cross country coach at Cleveland State. Patton was an assistant coach at St. Joseph Academy H.S. during the 2007 season, coaching the team to an 11th place finish at the OHSAA State Cross Country Meet. While at St. Joseph’s, she provided weekly nutrition presentations with topics including meal timing, calcium, iron and hydration. She also counseled athletes on appropriate pre-and post-run meals and hydration, while also analyzing runners three day meal records to assess if they were meeting the estimated nutrition needs.

A 2006 graduate of the University of Dayton, Patton earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Dietetics. She is currently completing course-work toward a Master’s of Education in Exercise Science at CSU. In addition, Patton is serving as a clinical dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic and is a member of the Left Ventricular Assist Device team. She completed a dietetic internship at the Clinic in 2006-07, working through a program that was comprised of 26 weeks of clinical, nine weeks of food service, four weeks of community and four weeks of sales and marketing. Patton is a member of the American Dietetic Association, the Cleveland Dietetic Association and the Cleveland West Road Run-ners Club. A two-time qualifier and participant in the Boston Marathon, Patton has also competed in the Columbus and Georgia Marathons.

She was awarded the Elizabeth L. Shroeder Award of Excellence in 2006, which is presented the to Outstanding Senior in the Food and Nutrition Program at Dayton.
