UM Bringing WINFOREVER Workshop To MiamiWorkshop Will Take Place Before Spring Game on April 14

The WINFOREVER team would like to invite you to be a part of an exciting opportunity on Satur-day, April 14 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida from 12 - 2 p.m.

At the home of the Miami Hurricanes, the 2nd Annual Nike WINFOREVER Coaching Workshops Tour will take the ‘New Generation of Coaches for the Next Generation of Athletes’ through an inter-active workshop that will lead up to kickoff of the Hurricanes spring football game.

The Nike WINFOREVER Coaching Workshop is FREE to all participants, and is open to coaches and leaders in all sports and levels. You will have the opportunity to discuss integral elements of coaching and mentoring in a clinic that will chal-lenge you to find unique ways to remain on the cutting edge of the coaching profession.

UM head coach Al Golden will be on hand to discuss the successful philosophy he is instilling with the Hurricanes.

“For coaches at all levels - college, high school, youth, Pop Warner and Optimist - this is an in-credible opportunity for growth as mentor and leader,” said Golden. “When they asked if we would host WINFOREVER, we couldn’t say, ‘yes’ fast enough. I have read Coach Carroll’s book, believe in the WINFOREVER philosophy and have paid to attend seminars like this in the past.

“The best part is that the WINFOREVER team is in-vesting in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and has made the event free for coaches at any level. This will be a phenomenal resource and benefit to South Florida coaches.”

Space is limited -- Please respond as soon as possible to reserve your seat for this exclusive WINFOREVER Workshop. For details and to RSVP, please visit winforever.com, e-mail [email protected] or call 213-763-2173.

Page 11: 2012 Miami Spring Game Program

After the sixth practice of the spring, we sat down with Canes quarterback Stephen Morris, who has em-braced a new role during the spring season while he recovers from injury. Morris can now be seen donning a Miami cap and a whistle instead of a helmet and pads, but that doesn’t stop him from being any less involved. This spring has been an interesting experi-ence, but it also hasn’t stopped Morris from continu-ing to work at his craft.

What is it like to move from the field to the side-lines? It hasn’t been too different as far as prepara-tions go, I still study the practice script at night, and in the meeting room I’m just trying to make sure all the other quarterbacks are prepared and understand what’s going on. On the field instead of practicing I’m checking with the other guys to make sure they know what the whole play is and the purpose of the play is.

Do you feel it’s beneficial to the players to have another eye on the field? It’s definitely extra benefi-cial, because if you’re really serious about getting bet-ter, at quarterback the physical aspects of the game are important, but the mental aspects are more im-portant. I’m trying to be the best I can be mentally so I know where the ball should go in different situations. The goal is for all of us to know these things and be on the same page.

Do you find yourself chomping at the bit to get going or are you cherishing your time off the field before you’re back out here every day? I just want to get back already. I know I don’t want to rush anything,

but inside of me its killing me not to be out there. I’m always in the huddle trying to pump guys up to make myself still feel like I’m a part of it. But you got to do what the doctor says so I’m just following what he says.

Could you see yourself getting into coaching in the long run after this experience? It definitely opened my eyes to it. I can really see why coaches love doing this, but right now I’m just focused on getting healthy again and being back on the field and we can worry about coaching later.

What is your favorite part of your experience on the sideline this spring? There are definitely pros and cons to it, but the pros are you really get to see the game differently. I now get to see what Coach Fisch and Coach Golden see. It really helps me understand and be able to help Ryan [Williams] out seeing things from another angle.

How do you feel about the other QB’s progress so far? I’m very impressed with the way they’ve been handling themselves professionally on and off the field. Ryan’s been around for a year now, so he’s been around the offense, but he’s doing a great job of han-dling the offense and really commanding the best out of the other players. Preston [Dewey] and Gray [Crow] are supposed to still be in high school right now and we’re throwing a lot at them as far as protections go and knowing all the plays. They’re doing a great job of learning and getting all of their questions answered so I’m very impressed with how they’re handling this.

SCRIMMAGE 1 | HENDRICKS STADIUM | HIALEAH The University of Miami Football team completed their first scrimmage at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah on March 24. The scrimmage simulated different game situations with full-team action. The offense dominated the action early, with Mike James finding his way to the endzone from a couple yards out and Clive Walford making two touchdown grabs within the first few plays. James ended the scrimmage with 78 yards on 13 attempts and three touchdowns, including an impressive 55-yarder in which he outran the entire defense. As the scrim-mage progressed, Rashawn Scott got into a groove making five catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Williams had a productive day, completing 14-of-21 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns. The defense became more active as they went along af-ter being sparked by a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Vaughn Telemaque. Defenders were constantly making plays on the ball, resulting in two forced fumbles, seven sacks and nine pass deflections. Jimmy Gaines led the defense with eight tackles and Kelvin Cain led all players with two sacks.

A packed house of 6,500 excited Canes fans were on hand to see the team in person. Offensive players wore white jerseys, while the defense wore orange jerseys and quarterbacks donned green non-contact jerseys. The scrimmage started with goal line plays as the offense did their best to punch it in the end zone. After a couple of plays, Mike James scored the first points of the day on a two-yard run. Other than the goal line drills, how-ever, it was the defense that stole the show, only allowing two more touch-downs all night. Big plays came in bunches for the defense as there were multiple sacks, interceptions and big hits. Freshman cornerback Ladarius Gunter intercept-ed a Ryan Williams pass in the end-zone, and sophomore linebacker Den-zel Perryman had two interceptions of his own, one on Williams and another on freshman Gray Crow. The Canes’ front seven came to play as they notched nine sacks from six different players. Anthony Chickillo re-corded two sacks after missing some time due to injury and looked like his usual self. Freshman Dwayne Hoilett had two, and Curtis Porter, Ricardo Williams, Gionni Paul and Perryman each had one. Sacks were whistled by the referees when defensive players reached out to the quarterback since they could not tackle them. Running back Eduardo Clements felt the wrath of the defensive front as he was tackled for losses by Porter, Raphael Kirby (twice), Olsen Pierre and Darius Smith. Highlights from the offense includ-ed a beautiful 34-yard pass from Wil-liams to spring sensation Rashawn Scott, who later scored on a seven-yard catch from Williams. Kendal Thompkins showed off his quickness and elusiveness by scoring on a 13-yard play after juking out his defender. Backup quarterbacks Crow and Pres-ton Dewey seemed to have shaken off the nerves from the first scrimmage and played much better.

UM Pro Day26 former UM athletes worked out for NFL scouts

Click here for a photo gallery

The rain held off long enough this year to complete the UM Pro Day on the first try, and the former UM athletes left it all on the field and in the weight room for the 66 NFL and CFL scouts present at the Hecht Athletic Center and Greentree Practice Fields.

Large Alumni GatheringIn addition to the front office attendees from the NFL, the pro day was filled with current pros who returned to their alma mater. The list includes Jimmy Graham, Reggie Wayne, Lamar Thomas, Santana Moss, Antrel Rolle, Matt Bosher, Or-lando Franklin, Richard Gordon, Cory Nelms, Graig Cooper and DeMarcus Van Dyke.

Vertical Wrap-UpLee Chambers had the highest vertical of all the UM athletes at 40.5 inches. Ben Bruneau was close behind with a 39.5 inch jump. Adewale Ojomo had the highest jump from the linemen with a 31.5 inch jump.

Big BenchesJoel Figueroa was the lone athlete to break the 30 rep mark with 32 reps of 225 pounds. The closest mark was 28 reps, which were completed by Harland Gunn. Leading the non-linemen was Miles Levine, who raised the bar 25 times.

Fast 40sThree Former Hurricanes broke the 4.5 second barrier, led by LaRon Byrd’s 4.41. Lee Chambers was next in with a 4.43, fol-lowed by Ben Bruneau’s 4.48. Olivier Vernon opted to partici-pate in only the 40 today after attending the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, and was rewarded with a quick 4.64 time for a lineman.

Combine ParticipantsOther UM athletes who participated in the NFL Combine skipped many of Thursday’s workouts, instead using their combine numbers for the scouts. Jacory Harris and wide re-ceivers Travis Benjamin and Tommy Streeter skipped all of the drills to focus on their position drills.

In AttendanceAlll 32 NFL teams were represented at Miami’s Pro Day, along with a pair of CFL teams.
