SETON HALL VS. THE MOUNTAIN WEST4Seton Hall has limited experience against the Mountain West Conference, posting just a 1-1 all-time record against the current members of the league.4The Pirates’ last meeting with a MWC program actually came just last season when the Hall fell to Wyoming, 55-45, in Malibu, Calif.4The only other matchup with a member of the Mountain West came all the way back on Dec. 28, 1991, when Seton Hall defeated San Diego State University, 71-61, in South Orange.

ANOTHER FIRST-TIME DOUBLE-DOUBLE4Sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith be-came the third Seton Hall player this season to record her first-career double-double.4Richardson-Smith scored 21 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds to lead Seton Hall to a 51-42 win over Savannah State.4It was the first-career double-digit rebound game for Richardson-Smith.

BROKEN GLASS4Three different Seton Hall players set new ca-reer-highs in rebounding in the 51-42 win over Savannah State on Nov. 29.4Sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith, who finished with a double-double, grabbed 13 boards, as did redshirt freshman Sidney Cook.4Graduate Breanna Jones finished with a ca-reer-best 10 boards.4It was the first time reaching double figures in rebounding for all three players.

WINNING AT THE LINE4With the win over Savannah State Seton Hall improved to 5-0 this year when outscoring its op-ponent at the free-throw line.4For the season the Pirates hold a 116-82 edge over their foes in free throw scoring, but that mar-gin increased to 107-52 (+55) in Walsh Gym.4Seton Hall tied its season hith with 26 made free throws against Savannah State.4The Pirates have made at least 20 free throws in four of their last five games and attempted at least 30 shots from the line four times.

STARTING LINEUP VARIANCE4Seton Hall head coach Anthony Bozzella has already been forced to use five different starting lineups over the first six games of the season.4Ka-Deidre Simmons and Tabatha Richard-son-Smith are now the only two players to start all six games for Seton Hall.

RICHARDSON-SMITH NAMED TO HONOR ROLL4Sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor on Nov. 25 for the first time in her career.4She received the honor after nearly recording a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds in an 86-61 SHU win over Wagner.4Richardson-Smith also recorded a career-high five assists to go along with a pair of steals in 34 minutes against the Seahawks.

COOK SCORES BIG RETURN4Redshirt freshman Sidney Cook returned to the floor for Seton Hall in its win over Wagner on Nov. 23, after missing three games following an injury in the season opener.4Looking like she never missed a minute Cook went on to score 13 points behind 5-of-5 shoot-ing from the floor, even knocking down her first-career 3-pointer.4She needed just 14 minutes to tally 13 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists.

5 2013-14 SETON HALL UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

HEAD COACH ANTHONY BOZZELLA

4Anthony Bozzella was named the fourth coach in Se-ton Hall women's basketball history on March 27, 2013.

4A 1989 graduate of Seton Hall University, Bozzella brings more than 20 years of coach-ing experience and north of 300-career victories to Seton Hall.

4A proven winner, Anthony Bozzella has turned every program he has ever been around into a perennial con-tender for a conference title and postseason berth.

4At Southampton he took a team that never had a win-ning record guided the team to six-straight postseason appearances.

4It took Bozzella just two years to ressurect LIU Brook-lyn, leading the Blackbirds to the NCAA Tournament in his second year despite the team failing to post a winning record prior to Bozzella’s arrival.

SIMMONS ECLIPSES 600-CAREER POINTS4With 18 points against Rider on Nov. 10, red-shirt junior guard Ka-Deidre Simmons eclipsed 600 points for her career. 4Simmons currently leads all active Seton Hall players with 657-career points.4She has started 64 of her 67-career games played and is averaging 9.8 ppg.

RARE DOUBLE FOR THE HALL4Redshirt sophomore Bra’Shey Ali (14 re-bounds) and redshirt junior Ka-Deidre Simmons (10 rebounds) both recorded double-digit boards against Rider on Nov. 10.4The feat marked the first time Seton Hall has seen two player pull down at least 10 rebounds in the same game since Nov. 21, 2009.4It was Simmons’ first-career game with 10 boards.4Seton Hall had a season-high three players re-cord at least 10 rebounds in the win over Savan-nah State on Nov. 29.

SIMMONS NEARLY SETS FREE THROW RECORD4Ka-Deidre Simmons scored 18 points against Rider on Nov. 10 and 16 of her points came from the free-throw line.4Simmons tied the Seton Hall single-game free throw record of 16, set by Jasmine Crew against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 24, 2011.4Only Nicole Emery’s 10-for-10 performance from the line against Villanova on Feb. 7, 2009 was a higher single-game free throw shooting percentage than Simmons’ (.941) game against the Broncs.4Her 17 free throw attempts tie for third on the Seton Hall all-time single-game list.

POSTING BIG NUMBERS4Seton Hall erupted for 86 points in a victory over Rider on Nov. 10, representing the most points the Pirates scored in a game since beating Norfolk State 95-43 on Dec. 31, 2008.4The Pirates had eclipsed 80 points just once over the last four seasons, an 82-35 win over New Orleans last season.

REBOUND RECORD FALLS IN OPENER4Seton Hall pulled in 64 rebounds in its season opening win over Longwood representing the highest single-game rebound total in school his-tory.4The Pirates broke the old school record of 63 boards that stood for more than 20 years, set against Niagara on Nov. 24, 1990.4It was just the fifth time in program history the Hall had 60 or more rebounds in a single game.

LONG AWAITED DEBUT4Redshirt forward Sidney Cook finally made her collegiate debut when the Pirates hosted Long-wood in the season opener.4Cook narrowly missed out on recording a dou-ble-double in her first collegiate contest scoring nine points to go along with nine rebounds.4She missed all of what should have been her freshman season in 2012-13 due to injury.4The North Carolina Native was ranked as the No. 17 forward and No. 84 overall prospect by ESPN Hoop Gurlz coming out of high school in 2012.4She was an AP All-State selection following her senior season and participated in the USA Basket-ball U17 Team Trials in 2010.

SPARK OFF THE BENCH4Head coach Anthony Bozzella brought six players off the bench in the season opener over Longwood but freshman Tara Inman had the greatest offensive impact.4In her first collegiate action Inman scored nine points and dished out two assists, shooting 3-for-5 from the field while knocking down both of Se-ton Hall’s 3-point field goals in the win.

SIMMONS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST4Redshirt junior point guard Ka-Deidre Sim-mons was one of 10 players selected for the 2013-14 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.4Simmons earns preseason All-Conference ac-colades for the first time in her career.4Last season Simmons started in all 31 games at point guard for the Hall, ranking second on the team in scoring (11.5 ppg) while averaging 3.9 assists per game, which ranked 10th in the BIG

BALANCED ATTACK LEADS SETON HALL PAST LONGWOOD, 63-46

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Redshirt junior point guard Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) scored a team-high 14 points with seven assists and redshirt sophomore Bra’Shey Ali (Plainfield, N.J.) nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and 15 rebounds to lead the Seton Hall University women’s basketball team to a 63-46 victory over Longwood in its 2013-14 season opener on Friday night at Walsh Gymna-sium.

It also marked the first win at Seton Hall first first-year head coach Anthony Bozzella, a 1989 SHU graduate who last March was named just the fourth head women’s basketball coach in school history.

The Pirates dominated the Lancers on the interior, outscoring them 36-10 in the paint while holding a commanding 64-36 edge on the glass and a 21-8 lead in second-chance points.

While Simmons was the only Seton Hall player to finish in double figures, the balanced offense featured six players with eight points or more. Sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) had nine points and eight boards, freshman guard Tara Inman (Holmdel, N.J.) knocked down a pair of threes on the way to nine points and junior Chizoba Ekedigwe (Laurel, Md.) finished with eight points and five rebounds.

Redshirt freshman Sidney Cook (Parkton, N.C.) made her much anticipated collegiate debut after missing all of last season due to injury and appeared to be headed toward a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds before she was injured as she fell to the floor trying to save a loose ball with just under 15 minutes to play in the game.

Seton Hall trailed 9-5 in the early moments of the game before rattling off a 10-0 run over 4:39, capped off by an Ekedigwe layup that put the Pirates up by six, 15-9. Longwood pulled back within two points on a Kyndal Skersick bucket with just under five minutes to play in the first half, but Cook responded with field goals on consecutive possessions to push the SHU lead back to six, and the Pirates took a seven point, 36-29, lead into the half after Simmons nailed a midrange jumper seven seconds before the horn.

The Pirates scored the first two field goals of the second half, extending their lead to 10 points when Ekedigwe reigned in an offensive board and went back up for an easy two. Following a Daeisha Brown jump shot at the 16:23 mark the Lancers were back within five points, 41-36, but from there Longwood went ice cold, failing to hit a field goal over the next 8:03, allowing Seton Hall to push its lead all the way to 15.

The Lancers missed 10-straight field goal attempts and turned the ball over five times during its field goal drought. The Hall extended the lead to 12 points for the first time when senior Janee Johnson (Mat-thews, N.C.) fed Ekedigwe under the basket for an easy layup, which was followed closely by scores from Simmons and Ali.

RICHARDSON-SMITH DROPS 30 IN 86-75 VICTORY OVER RIDER

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University women’s basketball team broke open a close game with a decisive 18-7 run over the final five minutes to improve to 2-0 on the season with an 86-75 victory over Rider on Sunday afternoon in Walsh Gym.

Sophomore forward Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) exploded for a career-high 30 points to pace the Seton Hall offense in the win. She was an efficient 13-for-20 from the floor and nearly recorded her first double-double as well, pulling down nine rebounds which also represented a career-high.

Richardson-Smith’s 30-points were the most for a Seton Hall player since Jasmine Crew finished with 33 points in a game at Memphis on Dec. 30, 2011. As for the Pirate offense as a whole, the Hall’s 86-point output was the highest since a 95-43 victory over Norfolk State Dec. 31, 2008.

Despite building leads of 10 points in each half, Seton Hall found itself in a tie game with five minutes to play after Mikal Johnson connected on one of her three second half 3-pointers to knot the score at 68-68.

From that point it was fittingly Richardson-Smith powering the Pirate through to the win. She had a quiet start to the second half after pouring in 17 points on 8-for-9 shooting to start the game but scored 10 points over the final 4:36.

Crashing the boards off a missed 3-pointer Richardson-Smith went up an in to help Seton Hall regain the lead, 70-68, and knocked down a three less than a minute later to put the Pirates up by six in a game that was tied only moments earlier. After another defensive stop Seton Hall sprinted back down to the other end and this time it was freshman Tara Inman (Holmdel, N.J.) burying a three and all of a sudden what had been a tie game was a nine-point SHU lead with 3:21 remaining.

Prior to Richardson-Smith and Inman’s 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions the Pirates were shooting 2-for-16 from long range, but they were more than efficient on the interior, outscoring the Broncs 44-30 in the paint.

Another three from Mikal Johnson made it a two-possession game, 77-71, but Richardson-Smith quickly scored two more field goals on Seton Hall’s next two possessions to put the Pirates up by double digits for good.

Redshirt point guard Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) recorded her second-career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, shooting a 16-for-17 from the free throw which tied a school record for made free throws in game and ranks second all-time in terms of single-game free-throw percentage (.941) trailing only Nicole Emery’s 10-for-10 performance against Villanova on Feb. 7, 2009.

Senior forward Janee Johnson (Matthews, N.C.) also set a new career-high in scoring with 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting and redshirt junior Bra’Shey Ali (Plainfield, N.J.) led the team in rebounding for a sec-ond-straight game, grabbing 14 boards to go along with eight points; she is averaging 14.5 rebounds per game to start the season.

PIRATES EASE PAST WEBER STATE, 78-61

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Redshirt junior Bra’Shey Ali (Plainfield, N.J.) finished with 14 points and 17 re-bounds to record her first-career double-double and sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the Seton Hall University women’s basketball team to a 78-61 victory over Weber State on Friday night in Walsh Gymnasium.

Seton Hall never trailed in the game, taking an early 5-0 lead on a Richardson-Smith 3-pointer from the corner, one of her career-high four makes from the outside on the night.

Weber State would pull within one point on a Jalen Carpenter jump shot at the 15:30 mark of the first half, only to see the Pirates answer with a 7-0 run over the next 1:50, capped off by a Janee Johnson (Mat-thews, N.C.) three-point play as she stole the ball away from St. John’s transfer Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin off a rebound and laid it in as she drew a foul.

The Wildcats would cut the Seton Hall advantage to one possession just once more; making their deficit three points following a pair of Desiree Ramos free throw makes with a little over 10 minutes to play in the opening period.

Once again the Pirates answered with a big run, this time rattling off eight unanswered points to push the lead into double figures for the first time, scoring six of those points from the line. The Hall would lead by as many as 18 points in the first half and was in front by 11 points at the intermission.

Richardson-Smith (11) and redshirt point guard Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) (10) both scored in double figures in the first half and the Pirates did a lot of their damage at the line, where they were 19-for-25 (76.0 percent).

Richardson-Smith scored 16 of her points in the second half, and sunk a pair of threes over the first three minutes of the period to help spark a 12-2 Seton Hall run that put the Pirates ahead by 21 points with just under 17 minutes remaining.

The SHU lead fluctuated between 23 and 15 points the rest of the way. Simmons capped off a 10-2 run with a three-point play with 11:36 remaining to put the Hall in front 65-42 and Richardson-Smith hit seven field goals in the second half to help keep the Pirates’ offense on track.

For a third-straight game Seton Hall was dominant in the paint, outscoring Weber State 44-24 on Friday night after holding an 80-40 edge on the interior through the first two games of the season.

Richardson-Smith eclipsed 20 points in back-to-back games for the first time in her career, after entering season with a career single-game high of 17 points. Simmons has scored at least 14 points in all three games this year, and extended her double-digit scoring streak to seven-straight games dating back to the end of last season. She was also 7-for-7 from the line where she is now 29-for-30 (96.7 percent) this year.

Carpenter led Weber State with 17 points and the Wildcats were held without a 3-point field goal, shoot-ing 0-for-12 from beyond the arc, the first opponent to go scoreless from the outside against Seton Hall since Stony Brook on Dec. 17, 2011.

#21/17 South Carolina Pulls Away From Seton Hall in Second Half

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Seton Hall University women’s basketball team fell at No. 21/17 University of South Carolina, 88-67, on Sunday afternoon at the Colonial Life Arena, suffering its first setback of the season. Sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) led the Pirates with 24 points behind a career-high five 3-pointers and redshirt junior Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) scored 19 points with three assists.

Seton Hall was playing without three starters due to injury but still managed to lead late in the first half and trail by just one point at the intermission, thanks in large part to the offensive play of Richard-son-Smith and Simmons and strong contributions in the post from senior Brittany Webb (New York, N.Y.) and graduate student Breanna Jones (Springfield, Va.) off the bench. Senior Janee Johnson (Matthews, N.C.) battled foul trouble in the first half but came back to score seven points with six boards in the second.

Seton Hall limited the Gamecocks to 2-for-7 shooting to start the game but racked up 16 first half fouls leading to a 27-5 difference in free throw attempts with South Carolina sinking 21 of those shots.

The Pirates held the Gamecocks without a field goal for nearly six minutes in the middle of the first half but that stretch was ended by Aleighsa Welch with 8:34 left in the period, a layup off a turnover near midcourt that sparked a 9-5 run that came to an end on a Khadijah Sessions layup in transition with 6:28 remaining, making it 32-26.

Webb broke the run with a tough bucket in the post, Simmons stepped to sink a mid-range jumper on the next possession and Richardson-Smith knocked down her fourth three of the half 37 seconds later to make it a three-point game once again.

Richardson-Smith’s shot from distance was the start of seven unanswered points for Seton Hall, allowing the Pirates to regain the lead with just over a minute to play in the half. Sophomore guard Jasmine McCall (Manalapan, N.J.), who finished the game with a career-high nine points, nailed a 15-foot baseline jump shot to cut the lead down to one and Richardson-Smith gave Seton Hall a 39-38 lead with a putback off an offensive board.

On the other end Asia Dozier hit a three to give South Carolina a two-point lead heading to halftime, but that momentum carried over to the start of the second half where the Gamecocks quickly stretched the lead thanks in large part to continued hot shooting from long distance.

Dozier connected again on South Carolina’s first possession of the second half to push the lead to five, and the Gamecocks advantage ballooned to 12 points as Tiffany Mitchell buried threes just 1:13 apart, to give South Carolina its first double digit lead, 55-43, with 14:44 to play.

Facing its largest deficit of the game, 61-46, Seton Hall did rattle off a 7-0 run over just 1:12 to make it an eight-point game once again. Richardson-Smith made her fifth three of the game to cut the lead to 10 and Simmons pulled up for a short jump shot on the next possession as suddenly it was 61-53.

Khadijah Sessions responded with a three on the next South Carolina possession to put the Gamecocks back in front by 11 points and despite strong play from Johnson down the stretch, scoring seven points over four-straight possessions, the Pirates were unable to pull any closer than 10 the rest of the way.

WOMEN’S HOOPS HANDLES WAGNER IN WALSH, 86-61

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior center Brittany Webb (New York, N.Y.) scored a career-high 18 points to lead four players in double figures as the Seton Hall University women’s basketball team handled Wagner College, 86-61, on Saturday afternoon in Walsh Gymnasium.

The Pirates (4-1) used a 21-1 run over 7:34 in the first half to take a 25-6 lead and the advantage never dipped below 10 points the rest of the way. Seton Hall held Wagner without a field goal for 8:34 as the Seahawks missed nine-straight shot attempts and turned the ball over nine times during that stretch.

Wagner (1-3) turned the ball over 11 times in the first half leading to 15 points for Seton Hall and fittingly it was a Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) takeaway and layup on the break to give the Pirates an early 6-5 lead and spark the early run. On the next possession redshirt junior Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) knocked down a 3-pointer and hit a layup three possessions later to complete a stretch of nine unanswered points resulting in a 13-5 lead.

Sophomore Jasmine McCall (Manalapan, N.J.) scored on back-to-back possessions to stretch the Pirates’ lead to double figures, 17-6, for the first time, and freshman Sidney Cook (Parkton, N.C.), who was seeing her first action since suffering an injury in the season opener, buried a 3-pointer with 10 minutes left in the opening half to make it 25-6.

Cook finished with a career-high 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting with her shooting range on full display as none of her field goals were inside 15 feet. Junior Chizoba Ekedigwe (Laurel, Md.) scored in double figures for the first time in her career, also shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to finish with 11 points in 17 minutes. Richardson-Smith rounded out Pirate offensive leaders by netting 15 points, reaching double figures for a fourth-straight game.

Behind four first-half 3-pointers from Laura Amorosa Wagner managed to climb back into the game and pull within 11 points, 35-24, with 2:24 left in the first half but was never able to get any closer than 10 points the rest of the way and Seton Hall led by 12 at the half.

Four different players scored for Seton Hall during a 10-0 run over 2:25 early in the second half that broke the game open for good. Freshman Tara Inman (Holmdel, N.J.), making her first-career start, hit a three to start the run and Richardson-Smith connected on a triple just 34 seconds later to push the SHU lead to 52-25.

Simmons found Richardson-Smith in transition for an easy two on the next possession and Cook capped off the run with a 15-foot jumper from the right wing.

Simmons saw her double-figure scoring streak of eight games dating back to last season come to an end as she finished with eight points, but she also tied her season high with seven assists and pulled down seven boards. She moved past Kris Durham to assume the 19th-place spot in school history with 218 assists, needing just three more to move up to 18th all-time.

Webb led the Pirates in scoring for the first time in her career and was 5-for-10 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Richardson-Smith nearly recorded a double-double with nine rebounds to go along with her 15 points, and she also dished out a career-high five assists.

RICHARDSON-SMITH’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADS HALL PAST SAVANNAH STATE

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career and guide the Seton Hall University women’s basketball team to a 51-42 win over Savannah State at the Seton Hall Thanksgiving Classic on Friday afternoon in Walsh Gym.

Richardson-Smith was a bright spot for Seton Hall in a game the Pirates struggled to find any consistency on the offensive end, shooting 5-for-12 from the field with three 3-pointers and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Redshirt junior point guard Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) finished with two points, five rebounds and three assists, but eight of her 10 points came at the line, and redshirt freshman Sidney Cook (Parkton, N.C.) scored nine points with a career-best 13 boards.

Despite shooting just 17.1 percent (6-for-35) from the field Seton Hall managed to take a 28-20 lead into the half thanks to a critical 7-0 run over the final two minutes of the opening period.

One possession after Liberty cut the Seton Hall lead down to one point for a second time, Richard-son-Smith reigned in an offensive board and easily went up and in to make it 23-20, contributing to a 10-0 Seton Hall advantage in second chance scoring in the first half.

Simmons converted a pair of free throws 35 seconds later to push the Hall’s lead up to five points, 25-20, and after a pair of stops on the defensive end she found Richardson-Smith in transition in the left corner for a three ball, as the Pirates matched their largest lead of the game, 28-20, which would stand as the score at the half.

Seton Hall opened the game shooting 1-for-8 from the field and was just 4-for-28 before finally getting a couple of buckets to drop late. Foul trouble plagued the Pirate front court as Savannah State was in the double bonus fewer than nine minutes into the half, but the Tigers missed their first eight free throw attempts and shot just 4-for-16 from the stripe.

The Pirates limited Savannah State to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and the Tigers were 0-for-6 from long distance. Seton Hall’s defensive pressure contributed to 10 first-half turnovers for Savannah State, leading to nine points going the other way, another reason the Hall led at the half despite sinking just six field goals.

Seton Hall led by eight points, 18-10, earlier in the half as well, only to see Savannah State score seven unanswered to pull within one as Jasmine Norman banked in a shot and Bria Dorsey converted 1-of-2 at the line with 4:42 to play. Cook broke the run with a pair of free throws and another make at the stripe from Simmons 22 seconds later put the Pirates back up by four.

Two more free throws from Richardson-Smith with 16:39 left in the game resulted in a 10-point Seton Hall lead for the first time, and the advantaged stretched to 12 when Richardson-Smith drove down the right baseline and made a pass to a wide open Janee Johnson (Matthews, N.C.) under the rim for an easy two with 12:33 remaining. Johnson scored all nine of her points in the second half.

The Pirates were in front by as many as 14 points with 12 minutes to play and never saw that margin dip below eight points the rest of the way. Seton Hall shot a season-low 18.6 percent from the field in the win, but dominated on the glass with 56 rebounds to outscore Savannah State 21-4 in second chance opportunities.
