What graduates are saying

“ Looking back at the last five years here at the University of Maine, I can’t help but think about how much I have changed as an individual because of the amazing opportunities and lifelong lessons associated with being a student-athlete. Words cannot express how fortunate and privileged I feel to have been able to represent the University of Maine hockey team and wear its jersey out onto the ice. I will continue to hold close the great memories and extraordinary friendships for the rest of my life.”

— Mark NemecMen’s Ice Hockey

“ My time here at the University of Maine has truly been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I came to this school never imagining the journey I would have as a student-athlete. Being a part of athletics and academics here at the university has made me who I am today. I will forever be grateful for all of the support I have received from the UMaine faculty, my coach Mark Lech, my family, and most importantly, my lovely teammates. Looking back on my time here I can say I have no regrets; I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity to represent UMaine and I will continue to do so in one way or another for the rest of my life.”

— Corey Conner Women’s Track and Field

and Cross Country

“ These past four years as a Black Bear student-athlete have been the best years of my life. The friendships and memories I have made with my teammates and classmates will be cherished forever. It has been an honor to play the sport I love, for the school I love for four amazing years. Once a Black Bear, always a Black Bear — GO BLUE.”

— Michael FransosoBaseball

“ When I started here four years ago, I could have never anticipated how much of a life-changing experience being a UMaine student-athlete would be. The biggest lesson I have learned from my time here is the value of hard work and dedication, and I have come to learn that those two words epitomize University of Maine athletics. I have had the opportunity to play amongst, meet, and be inspired by some incredible athletes and coaches, and the things I will take away from this place stretch far beyond the classroom. My fondest memories will always be those shared on and off the field with my teammates.”

In 1994, Atherley was named Maine Collegiate Coach of the Year when he led the team to its first conference tournament appearance since 1990, the 1994 Diadora Classic title, and tied the school mark for consecu-tive wins with six. The Black Bears recorded a 1-0 win over nationally ranked Brown.

A native of Andover, Conn., Atherley was a standout player for the Black Bears during his career. He was a four-year letterwinner at UMaine, serving as team captain his final season where he was selected to the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) All-Star and Maine Collegiate All-State teams.

A 1988 graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, Atherley also earned his master’s from UMaine in exercise physiology in 1991. Atherley resides in Bangor, with his wife, Lynn. He has a son, Carson, and two daughters, Teagan and Kyelin.

Katlin Okamoto begins her first season as assistant coach with the University of Maine women’s soc-cer program. “Katlin is a great hire for our program,” said Atherley. “She is bright, personable and energetic. She has an impressive teach-ing / coaching background and she will serve as a good role model for our players. At the end of the day, she is a perfect fit for our program and a wonderful additional to our staff.” Okamoto has been an assistant coach at highly successful Amherst College the past two seasons. Last year, she helped lead the team to a 13-2-2 record with an 8-1-1 mark in NES-CAC play. The team earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In 2011, Amherst won the NESCAC title and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, finishing with a mark of 20-1. They finished a perfect 14-0 in conference play. Okamoto also served as an Instructor and Teaching Assistant in the Exercise & Sport Studies department at Smith College while coaching at Amherst. Prior to her position at Amherst, Okamoto spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach and traveling Teaching Fellow at Smith College. She has also worked with club teams and served as a volunteer coach at her alma mater, Colorado College, which competes in Division I soccer. Okamoto was a four-year standout at Colorado College, where she served as captain of the 2006 team, which competed in the NCAA Tournament. She was named to the Division I All-Independent team twice, including earning first team honors in 2005. Okamoto also excelled in the classroom, earning Division I All-Academic team honors in 2005 and was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection in 2006. As a senior, she earned the College’s Laura Golden Award, giving to the athletic program’s top senior female student-athlete. She graduated cum laude in 2007 with a degree in Biology and a minor in Asian Studies. She obtained her master’s in exer-cise science and sports studies from Smith. Former Maine men’s soccer head coach and Maine Maritime Athletic Director, Jim Dyer, will be assisting the Maine women’s soccer program for the third straight season. Dyer, who coached current head coach Scott Atherley, will be primarily involved with coaching the goalkeepers and assisting coach Atherley at practice and games. Dyer has had an impressive career coaching collegiate soccer for over 25 years, serving as an Assistant Director of Athletics at UMaine for 11 years, and AD at Maine Maritime Academy for seven years before retiring from the post prior to the start of the 2010 season. He also served on a number of committees while he was a head coach including serving as the chair of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Committee. Dyer was also a member of the board of directors for the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America. “I am thrilled that Jim has decided to join our staff, and rejoin the Black Bear community,” said Atherley. “The fact that he will be around to share his knowledge, wisdom, and experiences with our players enriches their experience as members of our program, considerably. Jim has such a positive presence, and his perspective about life, school, and soccer will help our players realize their full potential as citizens, students, and players. Our relationship extends over three decades, and I can honestly say that there are very few people I trust and admire more than Jim.” Dyer was elected into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
