The opening of the Herd’s new complex coincides with the realignment in C-USA that brings more soccer strength to the league.

The site was the home of the Veterans Memorial field House for more than six decades. The Herd’s aged former basketball home had fallen into disrepair - but the memorial panel to veterans that graced the side of the old arena was preserved and hangs at the main entrance of the soccer stadium off Fifth Avenue.

The main entrance to the 1,006-seat stadium also will include a brick plaza where Herd soccer alumni may purchase bricks inscribed with their names.

A new stadium also will help both Herd teams add to the home game schedules in future seasons. More opponents will be willing to come to Huntington and play on a first-rate surface with on-site locker room facilities.

“We wanted to have one of the nicest soccer facilities in the country and in Conference USA, and we’re going to have that,” Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick said. “it’s going to mean a lot to our soccer programs, and I think we’ll have more interest in Herd soccer than ever before.”

SIXTH SEASONGeorge Mason, ‘93

kevin long enters his sixth season as the Thundering Herd’s head coach and 15th season as a head coach. In his first five seasons at Marshall, Long has led the women to a 35-49-11 record. With the addition of Long’s first recruiting class the Herd posted a 12-7 record, its highest win total in program history, as well as going 5-6 in Conference-USA, its best production since joining the conference in 2002 and falling one game short of its first-ever C-USA tournament appearance.

Long accepted the head position at Marshall following one year as the interim head coach during the 2008 season. Prior to MU, Long worked at Rider University, where he served as head coach from 2003-2008. Long left Rider as the Bronc’s winningest coach with a 37-48-12 record in five years. The Springfield, Virginia, native was hired as Rider’s third coach in the women’s soccer program history, March 2003.

Long led the Broncs to record-setting victories in his first two seasons, 2003 (11) and 2004 (12). After a 12-win season in 2004, the Broncs qualified for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) playoffs. In that same season, he led Rider to the MAAC Championship Game, and in 2005, earned a first-round victory in the MAAC Championship tournament.

The 2003 season was the first winning season for Rider, a season in which the Broncs won two tournaments. Rider was ranked 27th in the nation among scoring offenses, with a win-loss record ranking among the top-third in the nation.

Long’s 2003 Broncs led the MAAC in shots, points, goals, goals per game and assists. Three of his players were honored for high academics. In 2004, six of his players earned All-MAAC honors, and three others were on the MAAC All-Academic team.

Off the field, Long improved the Rider team’s grade point average nearly half a grade higher than in his entry year to a 3.2.

Prior to Rider, he served as the assistant women’s soccer coach at North Carolina State University from 2001-2003. While with North Carolina State, Long taught physical education and he participated in the 2002 NCAA College Cup YES Clinician.

From 1997-2001, Long coached women’s soccer at Randolph-Macon Woman’s college while also serving as the Director of Sports Information. While coaching at the school, Long had the only two winning seasons in program history. Also at Randolph-Macon, Long was part of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee where he was the Chair of the South region.

From 1998-2001, Long served as evaluator and education reference for over 30 coaches as Director of Travel Coaches for the Lynchburg United Soccer Club.

Long will continue as an Olympic Development Program (ODP) Region I Senior

Staff member where he coaches and trains teams to compete at the national level. Additional duties as senior staff member include selecting the regional team, training, coaching in competitions and promoting players to the national level in the Under-14 age group.

From 1993 until 1998, he served as district and state head coach in Virginia, selecting teams, scheduling games and practices, attending and assisting with the Regional Selection Camp.

In March 2008, he took an ODP 17-18 year-old elite women’s squad to Russia to compete against teams from Poland, Russia and Ukraine. Long guided his team to defeat Russia twice and won its bracket to advance to the semifinal round. His squad

took the Bronze Championship and was the second youngest squad in the championship’s history to win its bracket.

In 2007, Long was the head coach of an ODP U15 regional team who faced U-20 teams of Costa Rica, Panama, Chile and Mexico. His squad fell short to Mexico, 2-1, in the championship match.

Long began his career in the Arlington County Public Schools, Virginia, as a health and physical education teacher and soccer coach. After college, Long taught three years at Kenmore Middle School before moving to Yorktown High School (1992-1999).

Long has been part of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) since 1998, United States Soccer Federation (USSF) since 1994, and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) since 2003.

Also, he has received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, “Advanced National” diploma in 1999 and in 1996,

certified with the United States Soccer Federation “B” License.

Long has been involved with different camps and clinics. He is Director of the kevin long Soccer Academy (2004), and numerous others up and down the east coast throughout the years.
