Welcome to the 40th AnnuAl NihoNmachi Street Fair! “For The Community, Embracing All Communities”

this weekend, we celebrate a monumental achievement - the 40th anniversary of the nihonmachi Street Fair! this J-town festival would never have attained this milestone without the support of community organizations, Japantown businesses, the City of San Francisco, and all of you, the people who volunteer, work at community booths, and just plain party! For this the 2013 nihonmachi Street Fair committee thanks you...and all those who have come before. For this, the 2013 nihonmachi Street Fair committee thanks you...and all those who have come before.

On this 40th weekend, we recall the early years. the first ever Street Fair in 1973 was driven by the vision of brothers Ron and Kenny Kanzaki and Steve nakajo to put together a festival organized by Asian American youth. that inaugural event literally took over Buchanan Street in Japantown, at a time before street closure permits, health inspections, or any reasonable “official permission.” People and organizations with a will to ignite social change and make a statement for unity descended on J-town and just started doing it!

now, thanks to collaborators such as Clear Channel and the San Francisco Municipal transportation Agency, placards and billboards for the 40th Annual nihonmachi Street Fair have appeared throughout San Francisco. the historic San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts theater was the stage for world-renowned hawaiian musical artists, Raiatea helm, nathan Aweau, and Steven Espaniola, who performed at the “Aloha by the Bay” Street Fair fundraiser. It’s truly remarkable that 40 years ago one revolutionary spark set in motion creative ideas and a community movement that have spread throughout the City, the Bay Area, and beyond.

Of course, the nihonmachi Street Fair owes its longevity to the people committed to social service and cultural sensitivity. this is evident in the community organizations that have been at the core of the Fair - the Japanese Community Youth Council, Kimochi senior services, nihonmachi little Friends daycare, API legal Outreach, Asian American Recovery Services, the Japantown Art & Media Workskhop, and so many others over the years. We honor them for leading Asian Americans to self- determination in their social care and community-building.

We also again take joy and inspiration from our Asian American and Pacific Islander culture. Great performances by musicians and cultural performing artists have graced the Street Fair stages, where greatness is measured not only by skill, but by passion and heart. Azteca, hiroshima, the Pete Escovedo Family, Flip nunez, the Asian Persuasions, and many more have performed legendary sets. But equally inspiring is the long time support of “our” stars like Rendezvous, Pulse, Big City Revue, lady Red, Colette Ikemi and the talented newcomers like tracy Cruz, Mango Kingz, and Johnny hi-Fi. We celebrate, too, our artisans and artists, who express our culture with vision and creativity, especially those Street Fair stalwarts like the JCYC and Kimochi Ceramics classes, Waka Ozawa, Creative Accents, and Sumofish.

We thank you all for your ongoing support. We thank you for your dedication to the struggle to make this Fair and J-town something meaningful and special. We thank you for solidifying the future of our community. We thank you for 40 years of spirit.

When I think of NSF, I think of family, community, and fun. I

have fond memories of going to the festival as a child with my family, and found myself later in life getting involved in volunteering at the festival. NSF is one weekend out of the year, that you know you can take your family out and be guaranteed to have fun, eat delicious food, run into old friends, make new friends, and just feel at home.“

To me, the Nihonmachi Street Fair means community. I am honored

to be a part of a festival that continues to perpetuate its original philosophy of providing leadership opportunities for the youth of our community, in addition to showcasing and celebrating the rich multi-cultural people and talents that make up our community. Congratulations Nihonmachi Street Fair!”

— Erika Tamura, NSF Board Member, Program

Director for Japantown Youth Leaders (JYL), Tomodachi Summer

& Teen Program (TOMO), Nikkei Community Internship (NCI)

Nihonmachi Street Fair started as Steve Nakajo’s SF State class project for

J-Town. Community groups, not businesses, came together to present a festival for a community that had been displaced by redevelopment. Even though we don’t live there, we can still come together in Jtown as a community.”

— Dennis Taniguchi, Past Director of JAM Workshop

From way back then...

Until now.

Welcome

Welcome to the 40th year of the Nihonmachi Street Fair!

I can remember when the Street Fair first started back in May of 1973. Most of the current members of the Board, Staff, and myself, were just teenagers. I could remember the many meetings Steve nakajo, Ron and Kenny Kanzaki would have at the JCYC building located at 2012 Pine St. Steve, Ron and Kenny explained to many of us, other young volunteers and students from SF State’s Asian American class, the purpose of nihonmachi Street Fair, which was to bring together the Asian/Pacific Community organizations, musicians, performers and artists by giving them the opportunity to showcase their agencies and talents to San Francisco and the entire Bay Area.

the nihonmachi Street Fair aims to ensure its existence for many, many generations to come, by teaching, training, and having the current and future young volunteers participate in the organizing, coordinating, mentoring and planning process of the Street Fair. hopefully, they will learn these skills, along with many other skills, and the “Community Spirit” of volunteering, to help them to be the leaders of today and tomorrow.

As the Street Fair continues to grow, we are looking forward to our continued partnership with the local businesses, corporations, city agencies, and with non-profit organizations, such as: Asian heritage Street Celebration, Pistahan and the Cherry Blossom Festival.

On behalf of the Board, we hope you enjoy all the food, entertainment, Asian Artisans, Children’s World, the participating organizations, our “Doggie World” area, each other’s company, and most of all, “the Spirit of Community.”

thank you for celebrating the 40th year of the nihonmachi Street Fair.

Sincerely,

Richard “Juebop” Jue, Chairman of the Board of Directors Nihonmachi Street Fair

Food Fest: local nonprofit organizations and small businesses serve various food items, including kabobs and BBQ, plate lunches, boba drinks, and kettle corn. Entertainment: From traditional hula dancing to jazz, reggae and hip-hop music acts, the event is known for its exciting and live performances. Attendees can catch a variety of dance demonstrations and cultural displays on two separate stages, the Webster Street Stage and the Clear Channel Cultural Stage.

Children’s World: this section of the fair features Asian-inspired crafts and games that kids and families can participate in together. the 2013 northern California Cherry Blossom Queen and her court will oversee the fun. the kids can learn about different cultures through fun activities, while being introduced to the nihonmachi Street Fair experience, with the hope that they too will someday return to volunteer for the event when they get older.

Doggie World: After a successful debut at last year’s event, this year’s Doggie World has been expanded. local animal experts and adoption agencies will be on hand to offer tips and information, and all are invited to enter their pups in the second annual Doggie World Pageant and Parade. this year’s proceeds from the Doggie World Pageant will benefit San Francisco Animal Care & Control. to register for the pageant and parade, please visit our Doggie World booth.

Asian Artisans: Participants can browse for fine handmade crafts, toys, clothing and other goods for sale in the Asian Artisans area, as well as meet the artists themselves, who come from all over the Bay Area and beyond; some of whom have been participants in the nihonmachi Street Fair for more than 20 years. Some of the artisans at this year’s street fair include: A Bit of Aloha, BokChoy Apparel, Fat Rabbit Farm, Kimochi Inc., Sumofish, Waka by Waka Ozawa, and Pomegranate Designs.

Nonprofit and Corporate Info Tables: nihonmachi Street Fair features information tables for both non-profit and corporate organizations. this is a wonderful opportunity for fair attendees to learn more about various organizations, as well as for organizations to get involved in community outreach and network with a diverse crowd of youth, families, and seniors. non-profit organizations including the Asian American Donor Program, Asian Women’s Shelter, Parents, Families and Friends of lesbians and Gays, nihonmachi little Friends, the San Francisco Police Department, will host information tables at this year’s event.

40 years ago, a new, cultural movement juxtaposed with my historic J-Town neighborhood influenced my identity more than I realized. NSF brought me closer to brotherhood than motherland; opened my soul to R&B instead of rock & roll; and blew my mind with work from Wong, not Warhol. NSF never followed

tradition. This is the proud legacy that will always keep NSF relevant for generations to come.” — Chris Hirano, Major Gifts Officer at Ronald McDonald House at Stanford

Growing up in Japantown, the Nihonmachi Street Fair was always a highlight of my year. However, since becoming a member of

the organizing committee, I have come to a greater appreciation of what street fair means to me. Street fair to me means ALOHA. The ALOHA needed to bridge cultures, generations, even neighborhoods. It is this spirit of ALOHA that I strive to share. Especially with our youth so they can carry on and spread the ALOHA for years to come.”

this year, the nihonmachi Street Fair lost 3 wonderful individuals...sons, fathers, brothers, mentors, and teachers. Each gave back to their communities in more ways than one. We will miss their physical presence, but Dad DaSilva, Randy & Pua will forever be in our hearts, and this year’s 40th Annual nihonmachi Street Fair is dedicated in their memory.

remembrances...

Jeronimo “Dad” DaSIlva “Who’s that senior gentleman who is always folding tshirts at the nSF tshirt booth?” Fair attendees may not have known Pat Fong’s father by name, but his warm smile and gentle eyes caught the attention of many. Dad was a fixture in the tshirt booth for many years, working side-by-side with his wife Beliza “Mom,” whom we lost 8 years ago, and sadly his daughter Ann who passed away much too young. Dad may have not said much, but his eyes said it all. love you Dad and thank you for your volunteer spirit that continues to inspire your nSF family.

Randall Dacoscos the nihonmachi Street Fair was truly blessed to have been introduced to Randy Dacoscos 3 years ago. he along with his talented ukelele group, Mele Ohana ukelele would make the trek from Southern California to bring the Aloha Spirit to our Fair. Randy not only shared his love of hawaiian music to all of us but also touched our hearts with his devotion to his ohana (family). thank you opening your heart and letting the nSF be a part of your ohana.

Ron “Pua” Patrocinio Our Japantown Community is saddened by the news of the loss of beloved hula instructor, Ron “Pua” Patrocinio. Pua’s Japanese Cultural & Community Center of no. CA hula class created a community of dancers of all ages that celebrated the tradition and culture of hawaiian hula. he brought his dancers to share the aloha spirit at the nihonmachi Street Fair and many other community festivals. his smiling face, vivacious energy, and addictive laughter always inspired those around him to be more positive people. Your dancers will continue your legacy in the Japantown Community. Your spirit will dance in everyone’s hearts forever.

To me, the Nihonmachi Street Fair is hard work, commitment, giving back to our community, and a lot of fun. This is my second year of getting to work the fair. It’s even more special to me this year because I’m now 14 years old and it’s the same age my dad (Ryan Quan) started to volunteer to

work for the fair. I hope to be a part of the NSF family for many years to come.”— Grif Quan, NSF Security Volunteer

I have been attending the Nihonmachi Street Fair ever since I was born. To me, the Nihonmachi Street Fair is a

place where kids, teens and adults can hang out and have fun. It also brings a variety of communities together. Nihonmachi (Japantown) is my home. As of right now, I usually dance hula and sometimes help out as a volunteer at the Nihonmachi Street Fairs, but as I get older, I plan on taking on a bigger role in organizing the future Nihonmachi Street Fairs.“— Sumiko Fong, NSF Volunteer

Alec Mapa “Baby Daddy”last September, we had the honor of having hometown boy, Alec Mapa bring his one-man show “Baby Daddy” for a one night only event at uCSF’s Cole hall. Alec, an acclaimed comedian/actor, came back home to fill Cole hall with much laughter all to support the nihonmachi Street Fair. Opening for Alec Mapa was local comedian Justin lucas.

We are sincerely grateful for his generosity, friendship and for sharing his life changing experience of adopting his young son with his husband, producer Jamison herbert.
