The 2013 PURPLE ACESSeason Preview

The 2013 University of Evansville women’s soccer team will be looking to defend its Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship, as the Purple Aces return five All-MVC selections from last year’s squad that posted a 4-1-1 mark in Valley matches. UE returns its top three offensive players from last season, including reigning MVC Freshman of the Year Abby Springer. Springer and senior Stephanie Thompson, who was an All-MVC FIrst Team selection and MVC All-Tournament Team honoree, both netted five goals and recorded two assists last season to co-lead the team with 12 points. Sophomore Kayla Smith, an All-MVC Freshman Team selection, will bolster the Evansville offense, as she racked up nine points on four goals and an assist in her first season as an Ace. The trio of Smith, Springer and Thompson combined for all but four of UE’s points last season. Senior Lauren Tiernan also returns after making 11 starts as a forward last season. Defensively, All-MVC Second Team member junior Taylor Brand is expected to lead an Evansville defense that recorded six shutouts last season and posted a league-best 0.32 goals against average in Valley matches, as the Aces allowed just two goals in conference play. Junior Tatiana Pagan started all 16 games for UE as a defender last season and earned MVC Defensive Player

of the Week honors on Oct. 16. Brand and Pagan will be joined by sophomore Allie Arguello to complete UE’s defensive third. In goal, MVC Goalkeeper of the Year in sophomore Simone Busby returns after a stellar freshman season, in which she ranked in the top 10 nationally in both save percentage and goals against average. Busby made 10 starts, allowing just five goals in over 938 minutes between the posts. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native posted five shutouts, including four in Valley play, and allowed multiple goals just once. Other returners include junior midfielder Caitie Dierkes, sophomore defender Holyn Marshall, who started four matches in 2012, and fellow sophomore defender Kelli Moran. Evansville added 14 newcomers to its roster in the offseason, including Noor Medlej, who participated in training camp with the Lebanese Women’s National

Team in 2011. Medlej will bolster the Aces’ midfielder along with classmates Bronwyn Boswell, Colleen Dierkes, Emily Griebel and Emily Richardson. Freshmen Jordin Campbell and Heather Hall will add depth to UE’s attacking third, while classmates Kady Dieringer, Laura Minor and Megan Carpentier will compete for playing time along the back line. Whitney Biggs and Katy Kessler will serve has backups to Busby between the posts. The Aces will play 10 non-conference contests prior to opening their Valley schedule Sept. 29 against Drake, where they will begin their quest to win back-to-back MVC regular-season titles since the 1998 and 1999 campaigns. In addition, UE will also have the chance to play the semifinal and final rounds of the MVC Tournament on its home pitch, as Arad McCutchan Stadium will play host to the MVC Tournament on Nov. 8 and Nov. 10.

KRISTA McKENDREEHC HEAD COACH6TH SEASON • UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE, 2002

Krista McKendree enters her sixth year as head coach of the University of Evansville women’s soccer program in 2013 and has already built an impressive resume that includes a pair of Missouri Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year awards, two conference championships and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The only All-American in UE women’s soccer history, McKendree served as an assistant coach at her alma mater from 2005 through 2007, before taking over the reigns of the program in 2008. Her 2008 squad won the MVC regular-season championship, the MVC Tournament title and earned Evansville’s four NCAA Tournament berth.

That same season, McKendree received the 20008 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year award, sharing the honor with assistants Matt Kagan and Corey Southers. Never before had a first-year head coach at the University of Evansville in any sport led his or her team to an NCAA Division I Tournament. The Aces produced a 13-5-2 record in McKendree’s first season as head coach and the MVC’s all-time leading scorer in Kayla Lambert.

McKendree’s 2009 and 2010 teams were dominated by freshmen and sophomores, including 2010 MVC Freshman of the Year Breanna Beine, who was also named to the All-MVC First Team and finished among the league leaders in scoring by netting seven goals. Four Aces earned all-conference laurels in 2010 as UE advanced to the MVC Tournament semifinals.

In 2011, McKendree led the Aces to their seventh-straight appearance in the MVC Tournament and a trip to the semifinals, after earning victories in three-

consecutive must-win matches. The Aces knocked off Drake, regular-season championship contender Missouri State and the Bulldogs again in the first round of the MVC Tournament to earn a trip to Springfield, Mo., as the No. 4 seed. Under McKendree’s direction, five Aces earned all-conference honors that spring, including All-MVC Second Team selections Breanna Beine and Sam Conrad.

During the 2012 campaign, McKendree guided the Aces to their second MVC regular-season championship during her tenure, despite the fact that UE was picked last in the MVC Preseason Poll. After a slow-start to the season, McKendree’s squad found its stride in Valley play, as Evansville finished 4-1-1 in league play to claim the regular-season title. A total of six Aces were named to All-MVC squads, including a pair of freshmen in Simone Busby and Abby Springer, who were named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Year and MVC Freshman of the Year, respectively. Stephanie Thompson joined Busby and Springer on the All-MVC First Team, marking the first time since 2008 that three or more UE players were selected to the All-MVC First Team in the same season.

McKendree’s rise to the head coaching position began when she returned to the University of Evansville in 2005, soon after Chris Pfau was hired as head coach. Evansville’s win total immediately more than tripled, from three in 2004, to 10 in 2005. In 2006, McKendree was part of the MVC Coaching Staff of the Year and in 2007, the Aces climbed to second place in the MVC standings by winning 10 matches for the third-consecutive year. When Pfau left UE to become the head coach at Akron, McKendree was the popular choice to replace him.

HEAD COACH

23www.GoPurpleAces.com

As a player, McKendree led Evansville to the NCAA Tournament in 1998, 1999 and 2001, and is regarded as the best defender to ever play for the Purple Aces. In 2006, she was chosen to the MVC Women’s Soccer All-Centennial Team. She was a four-time All-MVC First Team selection and was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Year in 1999, before being selected as the MVC Player of the Year in 2000. McKendree became UE women’s soccer first All-American in 2000, when she was chosen to the NSCAA/adidas Women’s Soccer Division I All-American Third Team.

McKendree was also a member of the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team in 2000 and 2001, in addition to winning three MVC regular-season championships, three MVC Tournament titles and making three trips to the NCAA Tournament. During McKendree’s four years as a player, the Aces posted an overall record of 52-28-7.

Krista and her husband, Mike Board, were married in December 2008.

The MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCEThe Missouri Valley Conference has demonstrated throughout history that it finds the strength, resources, competitive determination and leadership to rise to even higher levels when confronted with change or significant challenges.

In 2012-13, the winds of change that have dramatically affected Division I conference realignment in recent years finally touched The Valley. For the first time since 1996, the MVC will experience the addition and departure of a member institution. The Valley formally welcomed Loyola University Chicago into the membership on July 1, 2013. Loyola is the 33rd institution to enter the Missouri Valley Conference and the first-ever member university from the Chicago metropolitan area. In March 2013, Creighton University, an MVC member for nearly 60 years, had announced its departure from the MVC for the newly configured Big East Conference.

If the Missouri Valley Conference has been anything over the past 106 seasons of athletic competition, it has been resilient. The Valley – which will experience its 107th season of athletics competition in 2013-14 -- has weathered many kinds of storms, including changes in its membership. In 1928, six institutions (Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma) left the league to form the Big Six Conference. Another major exodus from the MVC took place in the 1970s when four institutions departed over a three-year period. Each time there has been a setback or a major change in membership, the Conference has retooled and reinvented itself.

The nation’s second-oldest NCAA Division I conference continues to be a leader in college athletics and is one of the nation’s most progressive conferences. League members have worked together to focus on common goals and objectives, putting a high value on league harmony while continuing to invest in athletic programs to compete at the highest level.

The Valley brand remains very strong, both regionally and nationally, and the great athletic tradition of The Valley remains a compelling force in recruiting student-athletes and in marketing all the MVC programs.

Meanwhile, the success of The Valley television package is one of the great stories in the league. The MVC Television Network has blossomed into a revenue-generating vehicle and The Valley’s most visible marketing tool. Also, The Valley continues to be proactive in upgrading the production and marketing of both institutionally-produced and

conference-produced webcasts. In 2010, The Valley took a major step toward ensuring current revenues in television media and tournament sponsorship sales would be guaranteed in future years when it announced a 10-year partnership with Learfield Sports. The Jefferson City, Missouri-based company now has the exclusive sales and marketing rights to MVC assets that include championships and television advertising.

During the tenure of Doug Elgin, The Valley’s ninth and longest-tenured commissioner, The Valley has been aggressive in hosting NCAA events in St. Louis. From 1998-2010, the MVC served as host for a staggering nine NCAA tournament events in that 13-year period, which has made St. Louis one of the most frequent stops on the NCAA Tournament trail. The Valley hosted Women’s Final Fours in 2001 and 2009 and the Men’s Final Four in 2005. This year, The Valley will host an NCAA second- and third-round men’s basketball event at Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Last year, the league hosted an NCAA second- and third-round men’s basketball event in Kansas City and previously assisted with preliminary round men’s events in both 2008 and 2012 in Omaha.

The seeds for the creation of the conference were planted by eight administrators representing five institutions, who met at the Midland Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1907. The five schools which formed the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association were Washington University of St. Louis, and the state universities of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Two months after the initial meeting, two more schools -- Drake University and Iowa State College -- were admitted.

In the fall of 1907, basketball became the first competitive sport. Today, the Missouri Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country and track & field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

Indeed, the inclusion of women’s programs under The Valley banner has provided a boost. The Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference -- which began in 1982 -- merged with The Missouri Valley Conference and was unveiled as part of the new conference on July 1, 1992. While the inclusion of women’s sports under a comprehensive athletic umbrella is a recent development in the league’s storied history, over the years, Valley student-athletes and coaches have

become household names during the league’s illustrious history, both during their collegiate careers and, for some, professional careers.

In fact, The Valley began honoring that tradition in the summer of 1997, when the conference began its athletics Hall of Fame. Hersey Hawkins of Bradley, Larry Bird of Indiana State, Wes Unseld of Louisville, Coach Henry Iba of Oklahoma State, Dave Stallworth of Wichita State, Ed Macauley of Saint Louis, and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati were members of the initial induction class. Currently, nearly 80 former players, coaches and alums dot the league’s Hall of Fame.

Men’s basketball, perhaps, has the league’s most storied tradition, boasting the likes of Hall of Famers Bird and Robertson as former players, but The Valley has also produced national-caliber student-athletes in its other sponsored sports. In 2001, Missouri State’s Jackie Stiles became the first Valley woman to earn the Honda-Broderick Cup, given to the nation’s top female collegiate student-athlete. In the sport of track and field, Indiana State’s Holli Hyche captured seven national sprint titles in the early 1990s, Southern Illinois’ Darrin Plab won back-to-back NCAA outdoor high jump titles in 1991 and 1992, SIU’s Brittany Riley became the World record holder in the weight throw in 2007, and Kylie Hutson of Indiana State swept both the indoor and outdoor pole vault titles in 2009 and in 2010. Southern Illinois’ Jeneva McCall (three NCAA individual championships) and Illinois State’s Tim Glover (back-to-back javelin championships in 2011 and 2012) and Indiana State’s Felisha Johnson (indoor weight throw in 2011 and 2013) are the most recent multi-year NCAA champions in the league’s highly decorated history in track & field.

In the fall of 1997, Creighton’s Johnny Torres was named the collegiate male soccer player of the year for a second-straight year, while SMU’s Luchi Gonzalez (2001) and Tulsa’s Ryan Pore (2004) have also earned a National Player of the Year honor in men’s soccer. Meanwhile, league member Wichita State has produced three national collegiate players of the year in baseball, including Joe Carter (1981), Phil Stephenson (1982) and Darren Dreifort (1993).

League members include Bradley, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Loyola Chicago, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State. Central Arkansas and Southern Illinois Edwardsville are affiliate members in men’s soccer, and Dallas Baptist is an affiliate member for baseball.
