After guiding the Cal Poly men’sbasketball team to its first BigWest Conference champi-

onship and NCAA Division ITournament appearance and havingestablished the Mustang program asan annual Big West title contender,Joe Callero is in his sixth season ashead coach. Through Callero’s direction, CalPoly’s 2013-14 finish ranked as onethe most notable achievements inschool history with the Mustangssweeping aside second-seeded UCSanta Barbara, No. 1 UC Irvine andfifth-seeded Cal State Northridge toclaim the program’s first Big WestTournament title. At the NCAATournament First Four, the Mustangstopped fellow No. 16 seed TexasSouthern to record the program’s firstpostseason win in 32 years and thefirst NCAA Tournament victory by aBig West program in nine seasons.Despite falling to top-seeded WichitaState in the second round, Cal Polyfinished the year ranked fifth nationallyin fewest turnovers per game (8.9)and 37th in points allowed per game(63.6). Under Callero, Cal Poly’s 43 BigWest victories rank as the highesttotal over a five-year period in pro-gram history while the team’s 77 totalwins rank as the highest five-year totalin 22 seasons. The Big West’s domi-nant defensive program, Cal Poly hasled the conference in fewest pointsallowed per game for the last four sea-sons while ranking as one of thenation’s top-40 defensive programs in

three of the last four years. Individually, Cal Poly has pro-duced eight All-Big West selectionsunder Callero while, last season,Chris Eversley became the first BigWest Tournament Most ValuablePlayer selection in program history. With a reputation for refining talent,Callero – who coached NBA champi-on Brian Scalabrine at USC (1998-99) – has helped produce nine profes-sional players at Cal Poly. Mostrecently, Eversley signed with Asianclub Westports Malaysia Dragonswhile guard Amaurys Fermin (2009-12) was named 2013 Rookie of theYear in the Dominican Republicnational league and guard Drake U’u(2009-13) helped the Perth Wildcatsto the 2014 Australia NationalBasketball League championship. Cal Poly annually competesagainst the nation’s best programs inhigh-profile environments. During the2013-14 season alone, Cal Polyfaced four ranked programs (Arizona,Oregon, Pitt, Wichita State), threemore teams that made the NCAATournament (Stanford, Delaware,Texas Southern) and played a pro-gram-record 12 nationally televisedgames. In the classroom, the Mustangshave performed exceptionally underCallero’s guidance with all 12 seniorplayers during the previous three sea-sons earning degrees. Cal Poly’sfour-year APR score of 959 between2009-10 and 2012-13 is a jump of 34points following a 963 score duringthe 2012-13 academic year. In support of Cal Poly’s talent, win-ning ways and nationally recognizedstyle of play, the Mustang programhas experienced a 39 percentincrease in attendance between the2008-09 campaign (the final seasonprior to Callero’s arrival) and last sea-son’s average of 2,184 fans per homegame. Under Callero, Cal Poly is 42-

22 inside the Mott Athletics Center,28-14 versus Big West opponentsand, between the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons, won 16 straight confer-ence home games. Setting the stage for Cal Poly’s2013-14 championship season was a2012-13 Mustang squad that set pro-gram records for Big West victories(12) and Big West winning percent-age (.667) en route to a second suc-cessive Big West Tournament semifi-nal appearance. An overall 18-wintotal helped Cal Poly match or exceedits victory total from the previous yearfor the fourth successive season (afeat not accomplished for 41years).The 2012-13 Mustangs also finished13-1 inside the Mott Athletics Centerto set Division I program records forhome victories, fewest home lossesand home winning percentage (.929).In toppling No. 11 UCLA at PauleyPavilion, the Mustangs chalked uptheir first victory against a rankedopponent and, as part of theCollegeInsider.com Tournament, CalPoly played the program’s first post-season game in 27 years. Cal Polyalso finished second nationally infewest turnovers per game (9.4) andfourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.46-to-1). Cal Poly finished the 2011-12 sea-son ranked among Division I basket-ball’s top-25 defensive programs for asecond successive year. Along theway, Cal Poly produced an 18-winseason, reached the Big WestTournament semifinals for the firsttime in five years and, during a 100-54victory against Cal State Northridge, the Mustangs sank their first 11 three-point attempts to match a 25-year-oldNCAA record. Selected to finish fifth in the BigWest standings during the 2010-11season, Cal Poly instead matchedsingle-season program records forhighest showing in the Big West (sec-

ond) and highest seeding for the con-ference tournament (second). TheMustangs also cemented their statusas a defensive powerhouse by finish-ing third among NCAA Division I pro-grams in opponent three-point per-centage and sixth in opponent pointsper game. Callero’s initial 2009-10 season atCal Poly yielded one of the top single-year turnarounds in program history. In orchestrating a five-win improve-ment from the previous year, Calleroalso directed the Mustangs to theirbest start to any Big West season (5-2). Predicted to finish last in the stand-ings, Cal Poly clinched the No. 6 seedfor the Big West Tournament andcapped the year by winning the pro-gram’s first conference tournamentgame in three seasons. Named head coach of Cal Poly onApril 3, 2009, Callero has developed areputation for revitalizing programs. As head coach at Seattle (2001-09),Callero directed the Redhawks to 75victories during his final four seasonsand successfully led the programthrough its Division I transition.Callero’s final 2008-09 season withthe Redhawks produced a 21-8 cam-paign and the program’s highest win-ning percentage in 45 seasons.Additionally, the 2008-09 Seattlesquad – as an independent program– finished No. 131 out of 347 DivisionI programs in the final SagarinRatings. Before pointing Puget Sound in awinning direction, Callero served the1998-99 season as an assistantcoach at USC. During his one seasonin Los Angeles, Callero assisted theTrojans to the NIT. A prominent figure on the north-west basketball scene for more thantwo decades, Callero compiled a 130-49 mark during two three-seasonstints at Highline Community College(1989-92, 1995-98) and, beforedeparting for USC, helped guide theThunderbirds to successiveNorthwest Athletic Association ofCommunity Colleges championships.Callero twice earned conferenceCoach of the Year praise afterHighline posted a combined 63-2mark during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 campaigns.
