Having established the CalPoly men’s basketball teamas the Big West Conference’s

elite defensive program and with theMustangs enjoying their most suc-cessful period in the Division I era,Joe Callero is in his seventh seasonas head coach. Under Callero, Cal Poly’s 49 BigWest victories rank as the highesttotal over a six-year period in pro-gram history while the team’s 90total wins rank as the highest six-year total in 23 seasons. The Big West’s dominant defen-sive program, Cal Poly has led theconference in fewest points allowedper game for the last five seasonswhile ranking as one of the nation’stop 40 defensive programs in four ofthe last five years. Also one of the nation’s most effi-cient squads, Cal Poly ranked sec-ond last season among 345 DivisionI programs with just 8.8 turnoverscommitted per game. During theprevious three seasons combined,Cal Poly has led Division I with just9.1 turnovers committed per game. Additionally, Cal Poly ranks firstamong Big West programs duringthe previous four years with a com-bined 1.31-to-1 assist-to-turnoverratio. Through Callero’s direction, CalPoly’s finish to the 2013-14 seasonranked as one of the most notableathletics achievements in universityhistory. The first and only No. 7 seedin the 40-year history of the Big WestConference Tournament to claim thecrown, Cal Poly swept aside sec-ond-seeded UC Santa Barbara, No.1 UC Irvine and fifth-seeded CSUNto earn the program’s first Big Westchampionship and first NCAA

Division I Tournament berth. At theNCAA Tournament First Four, theMustangs topped fellow No. 16 seedTexas Southern to record the pro-gram’s first postseason win in 32years and the only NCAATournament victory by a Big Westprogram in the last 10 seasons.Despite falling to top-seeded WichitaState in the second round, Cal Polyfinished the year ranked fifth nation-ally in fewest turnovers per game(8.9) and 37th in points allowed pergame (63.6). Individually, Cal Poly has pro-duced nine All-Big West selectionsunder Callero while, in 2014, ChrisEversley became the first Big WestTournament Most Valuable Playerselection in program history. With areputation for refining talent, Callero– who coached NBA championBrian Scalabrine at USC (1998-99) –has helped produce nine profession-al players at Cal Poly. Most recently,Eversley (2010-14) signed withBelgian first division clubKangoeroes Basket Willebroekwhile guard Amaurys Fermin (2009-12) was named 2013 Rookie of theYear in the Dominican Republicnational league and guard Drake U’u(2009-13) helped the Perth Wildcatsto the 2014 Australia NationalBasketball League championship. Cal Poly annually competesagainst the nation’s best programs inhigh-profile environments. Duringthe 2014-15 season alone, theMustangs squared off againstnationally ranked Gonzaga, SaintMary’s and California, faced twomore teams that made the NCAATournament (Northeastern, UCIrvine) and played nine nationally tel-evised games. In the classroom, the Mustangshave performed exceptionally underCallero’s guidance with all 16 seniorplayers during the previous four sea-sons earning degrees. Cal Poly’sfour-year NCAA Academic ProgressRate score of 976 between 2010-11and 2013-14 is above the nationalaverage for Division I programs.

In support of Cal Poly’s talent, win-ning ways and nationally recognizedstyle of play, the Mustang programhas experienced a 34.8 percentincrease in attendance between the2008-09 campaign (the final seasonprior to Callero’s arrival) and last sea-son’s average of 2,411 fans perhome game. The 2,411-fan averagefrom the 2014-15 season marked theprogram’s highest total in 12 years. Under Callero, Cal Poly is 49-29(62.8 percent) inside Mott AthleticsCenter and 31-19 (62.0 percent) inBig West home games. Between the2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons, CalPoly won 16 straight conferencehome games. Setting the stage for Cal Poly’s2013-14 championship season wasa 2012-13 Mustang squad that setprogram records for Big West victo-ries (12) and Big West winning per-centage (.667) en route to a secondsuccessive Big West Tournamentsemifinal appearance. An overall 18-win total helped Cal Poly match orexceed its victory total from the pre-vious year for the fourth successiveseason (a feat not accomplished for41years). The 2012-13 Mustangsalso finished 13-1 inside the MottAthletics Center to set Division I pro-gram records for home victories, fewest home losses and home win-ning percentage (.929). In topplingNo. 11 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, theMustangs chalked up their first victo-ry against a ranked opponent and,as part of the CollegeInsider.comTournament, Cal Poly played theprogram’s first postseason game in27 years. Cal Poly also finished sec-ond nationally in fewest turnoversper game (9.4) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.46-to-1). Cal Poly finished the 2011-12season ranked among Division Ibasketball’s top-25 defensive pro-grams for a second successive year.Along the way, Cal Poly produced an18-win season, reached the BigWest Tournament semifinals for thefirst time in five years and, during a100-54 victory against Cal State

Northridge, the Mustangs sank theirfirst 11 three-point attempts to matcha 25-year-old NCAA record. Selected to finish fifth in the BigWest standings during the 2010-11season, Cal Poly instead matchedsingle-season program records forhighest showing in the Big West(second) and highest seeding for theconference tournament (second). The Mustangs also cemented theirstatus as a defensive powerhouseby finishing third among NCAADivision I programs in opponentthree-point percentage and sixth inopponent points per game. Callero’s initial 2009-10 season atCal Poly yielded one of the top single-year turnarounds in program history. In orchestrating a five-win improve-ment from the previous year, Calleroalso directed the Mustangs to theirbest start to any Big West season (5-2). Predicted to finish last in the stand-ings, Cal Poly clinched the No. 6 seedfor the Big West Tournament andcapped the year by winning the pro-gram’s first conference tournamentgame in three seasons. Named head coach of Cal Polyon April 3, 2009, Callero has devel-oped a reputation for revitalizing pro-grams.
