WHAT IS

From awakening dormant dreamers to birthing valiant visionaries, The Dream Center (TDC) is a multifaceted transformative hub that unearths unlimited possibilities, while simultaneously shaping the winds of perception. As a self-sustaining multi-generational extension of First Corinthian Baptist Church (FCBC), The Dream Center is the tangible vision of Senior Pastor Michael A. Walrond, Jr. By way of both unparalleled and unmatched programming focused on Creative Arts, Leadership Devel-opment, and Economic Empowerment, The Dream Center inspires, informs and ignites the imaginations of visionaries and dreamers across a myriad of genres. In the heart of Harlem, The Dream Center is a fully functional facility, carefully and artfully designed by the very people it serves. It is an ever-evolving building with dedicated areas for visual artists to regularly influence and shift the space, creating a living, breathing atmosphere for all creative development. After 2 years, we have redefined and reimagined our goals, this space, and our impact. We have become STRONGER.

- 6 - THE DREAM CENTER 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

A LETTER FROM THE

Our Support is Stronger. With the tireless efforts of Mietta McLaurin and our PHENOMENAL volunteer staff, The Dream Center has been able to increase its visibility in our community and connect with more people in this community.

Our Outreach is Stronger. Through a new volunteer initiative called The Dream Center Roadshow, TDC has partnered with street fairs, schools, and community organizations to inform more people about who and what we are. We have introduced ourselves to two different senior centers in Harlem and begun free yoga classes in their facilities. Our biggest outreach event was Harlem Week, where we connected with thousands of Harlemites and organizations. Harlem is starting to know who we are and it’s exciting.

Our Resources are Stronger. We have new partnerships such as The Bill Lynch Foundation; Emblem Health; and Family Cook Productions. We officially have 501c3 status through our parent organization the FCBC Com-munity Development Corporation and have already begun applying for grants. A samplig of our new partner programs include KidzStop, that works with Autistic children; Fathers First; DREAM NYC; and The Classical Theatre of Harlem. We have superlative merchandise, a new website, and a team of 200 hardworking volunteers.

Our Programming is Stronger. The Dream Center launched a total of 19 completely new programs this year in Creative Arts, Leadership Development, and Economic Empowerment in addition to 16 returning programs from 2013. Some new programming includes a Shakespeare Intensive, various marketing and computer courses, Teen Battle Chef where teens learned how to cook gourmet meals, and a full line of programming for Seniors.

Our Message is Stronger. Realizing the dream is the easy part. The effort, the grind, and the pressure of at-taining it is next. This is where we discover what and who we really are. As The Dream Center finds its inner strength, we are imparting that message to our fellow dreamers. Don’t give up. Don’t give in. This is tough. But we are tougher.

We are by no means finished. We have so much more to do. So many lives to change. We are ambitious, but we don’t care. We can do this. We ARE actively doing it. This is just the beginning. We are Braver. Smarter. We stand taller. We’re growing. We’re only getting better. We are The Dream Center, and we are STRONGER.

We’re grateful for the opportunitFy to do vital, innovative, life-changing work. It is a gift and a privilege. It is a dream come true.

Thank you,

Desiree AllenDirector of The Dream Center

THE DREAM CENTER 2014 ANNUAL REPORT - 11 -

In 2014, The Dream Center Harlem’s volunteers and staff launched an initiative called The Roadshow. Throughout the year, we engaged the Harlem community through street fairs, events, neighborhood block parties, and outdoor demonstrations of programs.

The Dream Center team met thousands of Harlemites and New Yorkers simply by engaging outside of our building. Our most successful endeavor by far was Harlem Week, where The Dream Center passed out over 2,000 flyers to raise awareness about the space and its innovative FREE programming.

“I participated in the Artisans for Seniors class this past semester. My experience was wonderful. Although I am a craftsperson, I have not painted until now because I didn’t

think I was capable….The class went beyond learning technique. Renewal of spirit took place. This is the beauty that I continue to

experience at The Dream Center.”

Betty Davis, 70, Artisans Participant

Senior Artisans is an imaginative creative arts class focused on participants ages 50 and up. Participants learn acrylics, charcoal, metallic pencils and more. With assistance and instruc-tion from a professional facilitator, participants developed their craft and their own pieces. The class culminated in an Art Show where the artists displayed and sold their work. Proceeds were donated back to The Dream Center.

This class had strong attendance and positive feedback. We are looking forward to its renewal in the 2015 year.

The Children’s Defense Fund’s Freedom Schools© program provides summer and after-school enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning.

In summer 2014, CDF Freedom Schools partners served more than11,500 children in 96 cities and 29 states (in-cluding Washington, D.C.).CDF Freedom Schools sites work hard to ensure each child is equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in life.

The Dream Center’s sophmore year was wildly successful and limitless fun. Field trips, dance, Martial Arts, Yoga, art, and civic engagement are just a few of the activities in this exciting program. Our age demo-graphic increased as well as our staff. The Dream Cen-ter staff and volunteers are thrilled to see what Summer of 2015 will bring.

At the beginning of 2014, The Dream Center hosted its first Vision Board Party. Statistically, vision boards aid with creative visualization and assist with moving goals and deadlines forward. This exciting program saw some of the strongest programming attendance all year, causing The Dream Center staff and volunteers to move a portion of the event into the lobby.

With phenomenal feedback and heavy demand, we definitely intend to revisit this event next year.

Teen Battle Chef empowers youth to challenge them-selves to adopt a preference for cooking and eating healthy food. Young people develop leadership, team-work, and culinary skills as well as gain nutrition knowl-edge and a new appreciation for diverse, healthy and sustainably-produced food. In addition, they learn about the food system and how they can play a role to help their friends and family make healthier food choices to prevent unhealthy weight gain and associated disease.

We were excited to join forces with Emblem Health and Family Cook Productions for this innovative program. Participants competed against other schools in the New York area and won. The finale held at the Schomburg and was covered on Channel 7 News. With partner participation, we are hoping to bring this program back again this year.

The Dream Center’s Education Debt Seminar was held twice in 2014. College bound students and parents learned about college economics, student loans, amd tips for financing college smarter and more effectively.

The Life Planning Seminar was created for our senior dreamers. This informative workshop was led by professionals who offered introductions to estate planning, living wills, power of attorney and more.

The LinkedIn Workshop was an informative seminar on the benefits and advantages of a functional and professional LinkedIn page, plus tips and tricks to get hired and effective resume building.

This 3-Part Seminar taught the basics of online marketing, primarily through social media. From using social media to optimize your product, to video marketing, and building your own website. This is always a very popular class and we are looking for opportunities to expand it.

Tax Talk was an informative workshop about effective techniques in maximizing your refund. Though an informative class led by professionals, this class had a zero attendance rate both times it ran. We are exploring different ways of getting this vital information to our community.

This workshop gave resources and skills for repairing and establishing good credit. Though this class also had a zero attendance rating, we are confident that with more lead time, this can be a successful program for Economic Empowerment.

Website in a Week is a hands-on website building session. Participants have a complete functional website by the end of the session. This was a very popular class that we are excited to see return and grow.

TAX TALK UNDERSTANDING CREDIT

WEBSITE IN A WEEK

Economic Empowerment saw a solid 2014. Due to the popu-larity of our prior workshops, we brought back all of the same

presenters this year to offer similar programming for those who may have missed them. What is most promising, however, is now that we’ve built these relationships with the presenters, they are coming to us with ideas for new and additional pro-

gramming! The workshop I’m most looking forward to seeing in 2015 is a hands-on clinic-style opportunity for prospective college students to complete the FAFSA under the guidance of our expert. Opportunities like this are exactly what The Dream

Center is about!!Marissa Coleman,

TESTIMONIALSThe “Website In a Week” course is truly a can’t miss course!

As someone with no tech savvy, I was able to learn how to create a professional looking website literally within a week. Carmen is a great teacher who demonstrat-ed the use of several tools and tips that have made the world of websites easy to understand and accessible for novices like myself. Whether you are looking to create an e-commerce shop, a general business or personal website, Carmen can teach you everything you need to know to get started. My only regret is that I didn’t take this class sooner!

-Lesley C.

Although I do not live in Harlem, part of my heart will always be there because of the dynamic and loving work done at The Dream Center.

How fortunate the Harlem com-munity is to have such a resource-ful and creative place with so many varied activities for children and adults---a place where they can learn new things and follow their dreams. My hopes would be that this creative retreat will continue to grow and develop through the years to come for all future generations. It certainly enhanced my life as I continue to see my dreams and creative projects become realities.

-Cullen J.

The Dream Center allowed the space for me to share my passion of helping people develop professionally.

The staff was very supportive and ensured I had all the necessary tools to execute the program. I would definitely teach another class soon!

-Shana B.

The DRIVE program provided a space for me to experience what it is to put my dreams into action.

I received insights from each facilitator and felt that they shared valuable information both on their topic and on life as an artist. It was important to me that all the facilitators were working artists in their respective fields. This was inspiring.

-Tahnia B.

I Love The Dream Center so much!

After school, I love coming to Free Flow. The staff is really nice. Especially Miss Cathleen. After school I really don’t have anywhere to go. I’m glad The Dream Center is always there for me and my friends.

-Aidan R.

“Finding this place was like finding my tribe.” -- Cathy Bristow

Harlem Teen Shakespeare Festival made me more fearless.

I’m not a big public speaker. I couldn’t believe I was acting on stage with professional actors. Our facilitators were great. They were encouraging. They kept us brave. I can’t wait to do it again. I’m a more confident person after the experience.

-Zoey M.

My favorite part of the SING MY SONG workshop was the feeling of community. NO JUDGEMENT ZONE!

The environment was very inspira-tional. It enhanced my perception of myself as a visionary. I have a unique voice in this world. It is okay not to fit in. I embrace my differences.

-Marcus M.

I am very grateful to The Dream Center!

The Senior Connect class motivat-ed me to be more in touch with my computer, cellphone, and Facebook. I also learned how to use my photographs in different places. It made it possible for me to use my camera. It inspired me as a dreamer because it opened me up to new opportunities to connect with loved ones.

-Linda E.

Market Yourself Program helped me face my fear.

My favorite part about this pro-gram was learning about the Marketing Campaign, Video Marketing and also the Website Presence. We took the topics a step further and actually made campaigns that were fit for our business. Many seminars will just talk about the topics but never allow you to actually do it. This helped with not only facing my fears but also many of the other participants. This program has reassured me that getting started is much easier than I think.

Thank You Dream Center.

The Dream Center Weekend was a weekend filled with color, fun, and a bit of funk. The 2014 theme was STRONGER. Our 90s Fundraising Party was a blast to all attendees. The Dream Center Block Party was met with a bit of rain, but attendees were still met with free food, games, entertainment, and program demonstrations.

Dream Center Sunday held at FCBC raised awareness about the space, its activities and volunteer opportunities.

It was a successful 2nd Anniversary. We are excited to see what 2015’s Anniversary will bring.

DREAMCENTERHARLEM.ORG

The Dream Center’s completely interactive website has had over 38,026 hits since its inception. As the world moves into a more virtual age, The Dream Center wants to be a part of that. All of our applications, class and event sign ups are handled through our website. Our unique hits are far above the industry standard for non-profits. We did a full website re-design in October that is performing very well and improved our mobile accessibility. Some of our content includes: self-help options, class and volunteer sign-ups, photos, a portal to propose programming, and a mobile site.

Dreamcenterharlem.org’s content is constantly changing. We expect only more growth.

THE MAKING OF THE DREAM CENTER VIDEO

In the summer of 2014, The Dream Center produced its first professional promotional video. Working with Kurt Williamson and Warren Oliver of HollandWest Productions, it was important to staff and volunteers that the spirit, beauty, and eclectic nature of The Dream Center was conveyed. A thriving multi-generational facility, we conducted interviews with facilitators, class participants, staff, and volunteers. The video also gives insights into The Dream Center’s dynamic programming. This unique space was superlatively displayed on screen.

The finished product is a beautiful video that allows the world to learn more about this space. You can view The Dream Center’s video on Dreamcenterharlem.org or on YouTube.

Special thanks to Kurt Williamson and Warren Oliver of HollandWest Productions for their remarkably beautiful work!
