Welcome to Ann Arbor! As a new or returning student, I hope you’re excited to get to know the greatest college town in America. If you’re anything like me, looking at the new bar and club scene for those recently 21,, you’re probably a little nervous about the culinary and libation options. With students hailing from osmopolitan urban centers like New York City, Chicago, DC, Seattle, Austin and LA, standards are high. With one grad-year under my belt, I’m pleased to share all that’s truly great about Ann Arbor. And there’s lots.

Small Meals & Lunch SpotsAnn Arbor is teaming

with chain, quick-service restaurants ranging from the consistently delicious (Chipotle) to the curiously still in business (Little Caesars). While these stalwarts are acceptable for feeding the masses, sometimes you need a meal that you can’t just grab at a highway rest stop or shopping mall. Try these off-the-student-trail eateries for a unique taste of your new home. Belly Deli

This Korean-inspired deli is wonderful for banh mi-esque sandwiches with tofu, pork, or chicken. But where Belly Deli really shines is its Kimchi Ball ap-petizers, like an Asian arancini. Salads are another great option for those who prefer a lighter meal. They also serve Puck’s soda – to mellow out the spicy sauces.

1317 S. University Ave.(734) 669-8888 ║ a2bellydeli.com

Monahan’sTucked away next to the farmers’ market in Kerrytown, Monahan’s is a seafood market stall that doubles as a delicious diner. Steamed mussels and littleneck clams in a white wine and garlic sauce are a favorite. You can also choose a whitefish, perch or whatever fillet they have on hand from the case and have it cooked to your liking. Remember, there are two ways to cook fish: you can fry it or you can F it up.

This quiet and unassuming downtown restaurant features several different varieties of waffles. Choose between sweet and savory toppings, and don’t be afraid to try something a little different. The Coney boasts beef chili and aged cheddar The Luxembourg, topped with goat cheese, arugula, and a balsamic vinegar reduction, is fabulous.

113 E. Liberty St.(734) 369-4734║ thewafelshop.com

This wine and cheese shop is a great place to swing by before a dinner party with your new grad school colleagues. (Never show up at a party empty handed!) But you’ll also want to stop in to sample from their sand-wich menu. Using a simple but complimentary mix of high-quality ingredients, including jambon serrano and butter or comte and tomato, on a perfect baguette, the sandwiches are supreme. Great coffee and beer, too!

Jerusalem GardenOne delightful surprise upon moving to Southeastern Michigan is the vibrant Middle Eastern culinary community. You have your pick of great schawarma and falafels in every city from Warren to Ypsi-lanti. Among Ann Arbor’s best is Jerusalem Garden. Solid classics like stuffed grape leaves and tabouli are refresh-ingly healthy, and the lentil soup keeps you warm in the depths of the near-arctic winters.

Ann Arbor’s MUST List

nZingerman ’s Tourists from around the world visit Zingerman’s and then wait in line for 45 minutes to taste their famous creations. Take advantage of your time at U of M and stop by on a post-lunch Thursday for quick service. 422 Detroit St. ● (734) 663-3354zingermansdeli.com

n Jolly Pumpk in BrewMichigan is a mecca of microbreweries. Jolly Pumpkin, with outposts in Traverse City and Dexter, is a favorite. Come for the unique beer list, stay for the friendly décor, diverse menu, and attractive patrons. (And try to snag a rooftop table if you can!)311 S. Main St. ● (734) 913-2730 ● jollypumpkin.com

nWashtenaw Da iry Donuts I love donuts, but I never knew that donuts could mean so much to me until I tried Washtenaw Dairy’s Coconut Flake donut. Chocolate Dipped, Blueberry, Glazed and more are also available. I suggest rising early to get to the shop by 5:30am at least once during your time in A2 to taste the donuts at maximum freshness.602 S. Ashley St. ● (734) 662-3244washtenawdairy.com

n B ig alora p izzaA longtime favorite in Detroit suburb Royal

Oak, Bigalora recently opened up an Ann Arbor location and is bound to be a locally loved go-to.

Ultimate endorsement: I learned about this place from Mario Batali’s Instagram when he visited. Get in on the ground floor now and visit before the crowds show up. Suite 112, 3050 Washtenaw Ave ● (734) 971-2442 bigalora.com/ann-arbor

n Fr ita B atidos (“Batidos” aka Tropical Milkshake) Frita Batidos is a guaranteed mood lifter. This sexy, fun restaurant delivers a Cuban interpretation on the classic burger and milkshake model. The “Batidos” are milkshakes made with super fresh ingredients like mango, pineapple, and passionfruit. Batidos can be spiked with alcohol.117 W. Washington St. ● (734) 761-2882fritabatidos.com

nMark ’s CartsFood Trucks are ubiquitous in urban life these days, and the destination of Mark’s Carts has a respectable mix of cuisines done very well. Great for a quick solo lunch, or a big group of picky eaters who can’t agree where to eat—Mexican, Spanish, Pan-Asian, and more. 211 W. Washington St. ● markscartsannarbor.com

budget? Put aside any fine

dining anxiety. Several Ann Arbor

establishments have created

menus with your kind in mind. Also, depending on the time of day you’re willing to eat, you can cut your costs with happy hour specials at some of the city’s best

restaurants.

Grad Student BudgetBlue Tractor207 E. Washington St.(734) 222-4095bluetractor.netWhile it’s not the fanciest restaurant in town, Blue Tractor has a classy feel and boasts big-taste barbecue in bigtime portions. You can get away with sharing and still feel full. The Cracklin Chicken, served with cheddar grits and brisket greens, will satisfy any transplanted Southerner.

Aventura216 E. Washington St.(734) 369-3153Aventura serves traditional Spanish tapas, paellea, and a selection of san-grias. While I think it’s better for drinks than for food, small plates are ideal for sharing. Tapas can be deceptively expensive so choose carefully.

Mani Osteria/ & Isalita341 E. Liberty St.(734) 769-6700

maniosteria.com, isalita.com

These neighboring restau-rants host my favorite happy

hour in town – not with their cheap brews or cocktails, but with deli-cious appetizer specials that can double as dinner. Isalita’s happy hour food specials change daily but all taste perfect with a $5 Marga-rita. Mani’s pizza specials in the early evening pair beautifully with a discounted glass of wine. Do not miss Mani’s come-back-for-more-once-a-week pickled tomatoes.

Alley Bar

Bill’s Beer Garden218 S. Ashley St.(734) 369-8001billsbeergarden.comA dreamy outdoor space just a skip away from Mark’s Carts, Bill’s is a favorite for locals and students alike. Bill’s has a great selection of beer and a few options for wine drinkers. Keep in mind the temperature and weather when you plan to visit. Heaters make the space habitable through the late Fall, and there’s some joy in huddling around a mug of hot spiked cider with your new grad school friends.

Bill’s Beer Garden

I know the biggest question on your mind – how do you get a drink in this town without having to face the droves of sloppy yet occasionally entertaining undergrads? We are adults. We often need refuge from the hoards of party-hard youngsters who, we can only pray, learn their limits soon. Skeeps, Rick’s, and the Brown Jug can be fun for novelty, nostalgia, or a super-cheap drink (or, if you are an MBA student like me, a regular and necessary part of social existence). Here are a few places where you can enjoy a few drinks with more mature drinkers.

Mash Bar211 E. Washington St.(734) 332-6046mashbar.netA whiskey bar in the basement underneath Blue Tractor, these folks are serious about alcohol in the best sense. The knowledgeable bartenders can guide you through an ex-tensive list of bourbons and ryes. Mash can get crowded on weekends but the patrons seem friendly and down to earth. You get the feeling that people around you are having real conversations that they’ll probably remember the next day. Mash hosts a great late night happy hour, as well.

The Last Word301 W. Huron St.thelastwordbar.comAnother underground establishment, The Last Word is found without signage underneath the obnoxiously expensive club, Live, contributing to its sexy speakeasy vibe. The menu is a book complete with chapters and a glossary that’s particularly helpful with understanding classic cocktails—you’ll feel like you’re in a private library. Good for a second date with someone you really like, or for impressing a friend from out of town.

Alley Bar112 W. Liberty St.(734) 662-8757alleybarannarbor.comAlley Bar is the rowdiest of the bunch, evidenced by their promotion of the Pickleback shot. (Try it once if you haven’t already.) This bar is a few notches above dive-bar status, with a mix of bearded, High Life drinking dudes and fashionable ladies sipping champagne cocktails. The singletons will engage in a few flirtations with strangers, and the paired off will demonstrate a the show of modern day mating rituals.

FALLEastern Market in Detroit – Inspiring at best and overwhelming at worst, this Saturday farmers’ market will change the way you think about local food and should not be missed. Get there in Septem-ber to enjoy the bounty of fresh tomatoes, or stop by in October for crisp, just picked apples.

Bike Ride along Huron River Drive - A 23-mile ride to Dexter and back is very popular for its beautiful views of the river, and for the required stop at the Dexter Cider Mill for apple turnovers and cider donuts. The best exercise is the kind that promises a delicious snack.

WINTERCross-country skiing or snowshoeing – For new transplants from outside the Midwest, you will not truly appreciate a Michigan winter unless you learn to embrace cross-country skiing or snowshoe-ing. Many golf courses in the area open up their grounds with trails for skiing, but Huron Clinton Metropark, just 30 miles away, is a guaranteed win.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens – When there’s snow on the ground, it’s toasty and tropical in here. The Gardens are technically in Ann Arbor, but when you are surrounded by palm trees and exotic blooms, you’ll feel worlds away.

SPRINGDetroit’s Museums – Plenty of U of M students make the huge mistake of never venturing into the exciting city down the road. Don’t be one of them. At the very least, take a trip to the inspiring Detroit Institute of the Arts and the fun Museum of Science. A great coffee shop, Great Lakes Coffee, is just a few blocks away on Woodward.

SUMMERBlueberry Picking – Many local farms offer pick-your-own ber-ries, but a shining gem in the area is Hazen’s farm in Howell, MI. Healthy, prolific blueberry bushes abound for maximum harvest potential. Say yes to a blueberry ice cream sundae or pie at the adjoining café once you are finished.

River Float – Grab an inflatable innertube and pack a few cans of beer for the highlight of sum-mertime in Southeastern Michigan. You can float down the Huron for hours starting at Dexter-Huron Metropark or take a quick trip down some man-made rapids at Argo Park. Congratulations, you’re a Michigander now.

We’re lucky to be living in the great town of Ann Arbor. But seriously, Southeastern Michigan as a whole is beautiful, diverse and vibrant. Everyone should take advantage of our location and take a few day (or afternoon) trips to explore. Here are a few options, broken down by our four wonderful seasons.

EASTERN MARKET is a Saturday farmers market that will change the way you think about local food and should not be missed.

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS is home to the world-reknowned Diego Rivera murals.
