Overthecenturies,anumberofsignificantfigureshavebeenmembersoftheCompany,includingRichardGrafton(theprinterofthefirstGreatBibleinEnglishin1539),SirWilliamLaxton,KingCharlesII(whoserestorationtothe Monarchy was supported by the Company in 1660), King William III (who became Sovereign Master in 1689), Sir John Houblon (who founded the Bank ofEnglandin1694),WilliamPitttheYounger(whobecametheyoungestBritishPrime Minister in 1783 at the age of 24) and, more recently in 1953 and 1983 respectively,QueenElizabeththeQueenMotherandDiana,PrincessofWalesbecame Honorary Freemen�

The Grocers’ Company has always given generously to charity, when its means allow� During the past three hundred years, its charitable endeavours, including thoserelatedtoeducationandtheChurch,havebeenaprincipalaspectoftheCompany’sactivities.WhiletheCompany’sdonationstocharityaremainlyfunded by assigned investments and annual grants from the Company’s income, asignificantportionreliesonregularsupportfromtheLiverymenandFreemen(theCompany’smembership)intheformofdonationsandGiftAid.

TheEducationandCharitiesCommitteeisthepolicy-makingbodyforthe Grocers’ Charity, the grant-making arm of the Grocers’ Company�The Committeeestablishesbroadtargets,reviewsallthecharitableapplications,and recommends to the Court of Assistants what the response should be�It is responsible for the provision of bursaries, scholarships and grants to Oundle, andsevenotherschoolswithwhichtheCompanyhashistoricalconnections,andforrelationswith13churchesofwhichtheCompanyispatron.

The Company strives to live up to the ideals expressed in its early Ordinances, thatitshouldbe‘anurseryofcharitiesandaseminaryofgoodcitizens’.

The Grocers’ CompanyA Short IntroductionThere are 108 livery companies in the City of London, with the senior livery companies being known as The Great Twelve� The Worshipful Company of Grocers today ranks second in the order of precedence that was established in 1515� Originally known as the Guild of Pepperers, whose earliest records date from 1100, the Grocers’ Company was formed as a religious and social fraternity of merchants and moneyers who traded in spices, gold, and other luxury goods fromByzantiumandtheMediterranean.Theiruseonoccasionofpepperasacurrency gave rise to the expression “peppercorn rent”�

The merchants formed a community centred on a church in the City of London that they built in Soper Lane - now Queen Street - and dedicated to St� Antonin� Increasingly, they became involved in the import and export of a variety of goods (especially spices) which they bought and sold ‘in gross’, changing the name of the guild in 1376 to ‘The Company of Grossers of London’� In 1428 King Henry VI grantedtheCompanyitsfirstRoyalCharter.

The small shopkeepers who retailed the goods bought from the wholesale ‘grossers’, adopted the name of grocers and the meaning with which we associateittoday.Overthecenturies,theGrocers’Companylostitscloseconnectionswiththetradeofgoods,wholesaleandretail,aswellasitsformerfunctionofcontrollingweightsandmeasuresatthePortofLondonwhich,sincethe Great Fire of 1666, has been in the hands of HM Customs and Excise, now HM Revenue and Customs�

Grocers’HallisinacourtyardjustoffPrincesStreetthatrunsbesidetheBankofEngland.TheCompanyisnowinitsfifthHall,allofwhichhavebeenonthesame site since 1426�

AldermanSirWilliamLaxton,MasteroftheCompanyeighttimesbetween1536and 1552, and Lord Mayor in 1544, re-founded and endowed a free grammar schoolinhisnativevillageofOundlein1556.TheSchoolwasre-establishedby the Company in 1876 as a development of the original grammar school to provideaclassicaleducationbutalsogivingprominenceto“modernsubjects”.In1930aRoyalCharterofIncorporationwasgrantedtotheSchoolandasupplementary Charter was granted in 1977 and amended in 1998� Today, the majority of Governors are appointees of the Grocers’ Company, and, normally, theChairmanoftheGoverningBodyisaPastMasterGrocer.InadditiontheMaster,SecondWardenandThirdWardenoftheCompanyserveasexofficioGovernors of the School�
