2014 SEASON OUTLOOKThe University of New Haven women’s soccer team enters the 2014 in a familiar situation. Just as they did in 2013, the Chargers are tasked with replacing a highly accomplished senior class, as a strong crop of return-ers and promising newcomers look to build upon the program’s most successful season in recent history.

Laura Duncan helmed New Haven to an 11-5-3 record last fall and the team’sfirst-everNortheast-10postseasonwin–a5-1victoryatMer-rimacktoadvancetotheNE-10ChampionshipSemifinals.NowinherfifthcampaignpatrollingthesidelinesonKayoField,Duncan’stenurewith the Blue and Gold is comprised of four winning seasons en route to a career record of 40-28-6.

ForwardsDaktronics Honorable Mention All-America selection Amber Simms will once again head the scoring efforts up top. Simms amassed a team-leading 13 goals and 33 total points last season, ranking second in the Northeast-10 in both categories. In addition to her All-America nod, the New Haven striker collected NSCAA First Team All-East, Daktronics First Team All-East and First Team All-Northeast-10 laurels. She was also a Second Team All-New England honoree in her junior campaign.

Two freshmen who were also scholastic track stars in addition to their work on the pitch, will be called upon to spell their senior co-captains up top. MidfieldersThe New Haven offense will be run through junior Marisa Garcia. A Second Team All-Northeast-10 honoree last fall, Garcia registered three goals and three assists in 2013, including the game-winner in the regu-larseasonfinaleatSouthernNewHampshireandamarkerandhelperin the squad’s NE-10 postseason win.

The Chargers will also regain the services of Alexa Seidenfeld, who missed all of 2013 after appearing in 18 contests in 2012. The gradu-ate student posted one goal and one assist in her last active campaign with the Blue and Gold.

ThemidfieldwillreceiveaddeddepthfromreturnersKellyBlank,Cas-sidy Haigh, Sierra Stein and Danielle Widmann, all of whom began their New Haven careers last fall. Additionally, four freshmen boast the mid-fieldastheirprimaryposition:NicoleCaruso,RachelDempsey,AllisonMorgan and Nike Sporrong.

BacksAn experienced back row welcomes back three of four starters from 2013. Carlie Schecht, Miranda Smith and Taylor Szyarto were all key components to a defensive effort that posted four shutouts and a 1.11 goals-against average last fall. Additional returners to the back line are senior Hannah Allen and sophomore Shannon Enright.

Freshmen Lauren Low and Danielle Matassa will also contribute to the Chargers’ defense. Low was an All-State performer for three-time state champion Dover (Del.) High School, and Matassa earned First Team All-Shore Conference laurels as senior team captain and MVP of Middle-town (N.J.) North High School

GoalkeepersNatasha Purchla will reclaim her starting position between the posts for her third season in 2014. Purchla started 14 matches last fall, posting a 0.85 goals-against average with three solo shutouts and a .850 save percentage.

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field,ofmorethan6,000studentathletes.Amongthe many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’sbasketball, women’scrosscountry, fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’ssoccer, women’strackandfield, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

The conference is coming off a banner season in 2013-14, as the Northeast-10 saw three teams claim national championships. First, the Southern New Hampshire University men’s soccer program won the NCAA Championship this past December, followed by the Bentley University women’sbasketballteamclaimingitsfirst-ever

title in March to cap an undefeated season. The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse program made it No. 3 after defeating Lock Haven, 7-5, in the title game in May.

A pair of Southern Connecticut State University student-athletes also won national championhips this past winter, as Nick Lebron won the individual national title in the haptathlon at the 2014 Men’s NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Track & Field ChampionshipandRaymondCswerkofinishedfirstinthe400IMatthe2014NCAADivisionIIMen’s Swimming & Diving Championship.

From thefieldofplay to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. An astounding 138 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 184 reached the benchmark in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors, as its fundraising donations for Make-A-Wish is more than any other Division II conference in the country the past decade. The conference also announced a formal partnership last fall with Team IMPACT, anon-profitorganizationthatmatcheschildrenwith life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Currently, more than 40 Northeast-10 programs are currently matched with a Team IMPACT child.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 34 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in theclassroom.
