About OregonOregon’s Historic Pump House
Oregon’s historic water tower and pump house are on the National Register of Historic Places, and a major effort is underway to raise funds for restoration efforts. For additional information, please visit www.oregonwatertower.com.

6 Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce
Once Upon A Time...
In 1847, the township called Oregon was established. In 1864, the railroad expanded through the Village, giving Oregon an advantage over the outlying settlements. Oregon became an important hub of trade, a shipping point for livestock to the Chicago market. About fifteen car loads of livestock and 100 shipments of wheat and oats went out of Oregon each week. The Village was incorporated in 1883.
First WWI Monument in the United StatesIn 1920, Oregon erected the first WWI monument in the United States. It is shown in this photo of downtown Oregon, and is made from a granite shaft from the old Chicago City Hall. Six teams of horses were used in the installation, and hundreds of people attended the dedication. Dedicated to veterans of all wars, the monument hosts services annually on Memorial & Veteran’s Days by the Oregon/Brooklyn VFW Post 10272.
Here Lies...One of the first settlers to the area was a Revolutionary War veteran who fought alongside General George Washington.
Nathaniel Ames was born in Connecticut in 1761. He enlisted in the continental service for the campaign of 1779, serving in the Revolutionary War for its entirety. He was stationed at Valley Forge in the cold winter of 1779-80, during which time General George Washington frequently interacted with his soldiers.
Nathaniel Ames moved to Wisconsin in 1836, and passed away at the age of 102 years. He is buried in Oregon’s Prairie Mound cemetery. Ames was the last surviving Revolutionary War veteran in Wisconsin.

Horse Capital of WisconsinAt the time of Oregon’s founding there were more horses than people, so earning it the nickname “horse capital.”
The Oregon area continues to live up to this moniker today, offering dozens of local stables that board and train horses and horse-centered spectator opportunities such as the Oregon Horse Association’s annual horse show on Memorial Day and Oregon’s annual Holiday Horse Parade. And, if you’re looking for a unique sporting experience, the Madison Polo Club, one of only four polo clubs in Wisconsin and an official member of the United States Polo Association, operates just outside the Village of Oregon. Matches and practices are free and open to the public.

Oregon Police ExplorersThe Oregon Police Explorers Post #2235 consists of young adults ranging in age from 14 to 21 who have an interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement. The Explorers participate in training for various police duties.
Community Academy Police officers instruct participants on topics such as firearms training, traffic stops, drunk driving laws, building searches, and arrest procedures. The academy combines classroom instruction with hands on scenarios.
