A Very Special Angel – Meet DEVIN

Kimberly Kay, Angels Foster and Cats Team Leader

When we got the call about Devin, we couldn't believe our ears! A young child was throwing a 5 week old kitten

around his yard. A man working next door witnessed the abuse and when he discovered the kitten was seriously injured, he convinced the family to surrender the kitten. But when he and his wife got to the vet, they were told the kitten needed to be euthanized because his treatment would cost

thousands of dollars and he would need round the clock care. They were devastated until they were told

about Angels Among Us Pet Rescue.

We rushed into action and found a volunteer to transport Devin to a local ER vet. The news was not good. He had a spinal cord injury and as a result, he was paralyzed from the waist down. He also was unable to urinate on his own and would need his bladder expressed multiple times per day. They did not believe his condition would improve. They asked if we wanted to euthanize him or develop a treatment plan.

Despite everything, Devin was happy, sweet, and trusting. Not wanting to hurt him, the volunteer who waited with him at the vet opened his carrier and petted him gently. Devin grabbed hold of her fingers with his two good paws and lay his tiny head in the palm of her hand. We knew that no matter what the cost or the work involved, this kitten was worth saving. We don't turn our backs on the hard cases. If THEY don’t give up, neither do we, and Devin was far from giving up!

We begged our supporters for help and they did! Donations came from almost every state and from many countries around the world. Care packages arrived from across the US filled with toys and supplies. A little girl set up a lemonade stand and donated what she earned to Devin. We received so much e-mail that we created Devin his own FB page (www.facebook.com/perfectangeldevin) so that his supporters could follow his progress from tiny, broken kitten to healthy and happy and full of life. Devin has touched so many hearts and we are truly humbled by the support he has received.

Page 5: 2014 - September Issue

Devin is not expected to regain use of his legs. An organization called Leggings For Life matched Devin up with a volunteer who will crochet leggings to protect his back legs from injury and ulcers. He has physical therapy multiple times a day where his back legs are moved around in various ways so that his muscles don’t atrophy and his joints don’t get stiff. He loves doing his exercises!

A wheelchair is being developed that will hopefully give him even better mobility but for now, he gets around pretty quickly with just his front two paws! A friend is working on making a cart that will grow with Devin, but he’s thrilled to have this one which was donated for his use.

Devin has a wonderful vet who takes excellent care of him, and we are hopeful that he will regain control of

his bladder but right now, he needs to have it expressed manually every four hours. It is quick and painless and he tolerates it well. As he gets older, it will only need to be done two or three times a day. Right now, his amazing vet is working with him night and day. She wants to give him the best possible start and the best chance at healing.

Eventually, he will go to a foster home where he will be loved and cared for, no matter what special needs he may have. We don’t know what Devin’s future holds. He may be adoptable one day and he may be an Angel forever. What we do know is that he will have the BEST life possible!

Devin is an example of how strong and resilient animals can be. Even with so much stacked against him, Devin is a sweet little kitten with a beautiful spirit. He was treated cruelly yet he still trusts people. He loves to run and he loves to play. He

doesn't let his disability stop him from anything. He's an amazing cat and we are honored to be a part of his journey.

To support, or make a donation toward Devin’s medical care, please go to www.angelsrescue.org/donate and list DEVIN in the “purpose for” box at the top of your donation page.

Dear "Angels Among Us" Staff, Volunteers, Fosters, & Supporters:

Just want to say how HAPPY!!HAPPY!!HAPPY!! my dog and I have been since we met through AAU's Facebook pages last fall. We had been around the block a time or two with other rescue groups, but none compared to the care and treatment we received from "Angels Among Us."

You all are BY FAR the most proactive, professional, medically thorough, pet-and-family oriented organization I have ever experienced.

The foster parents are thorough and make numerous phone calls and Home Visits to determine proper placement of pet to family; the animals receive excellent medical care by the best veterinarians before the adoption is complete; and follow-up calls continue to ensure the placement was "just right." I am SO HAPPY, and so is my precious senior rescue dog.

We're convinced it's because of the time and care you put into every step of the adoption process.

Thank you, Thank you AAU Family!

Fondly,

Terrie McMahan and “Homer”

Atlanta, GA

Thank You’s From Our Adopters

We love hearing feedback from our wonderful adoptive families!

ANGELS IN THE MOVIES

Our very own scruffy rescue pup, Lisbeth, makes a very special appearance in the family adventure film, Crimes and Mr. Meanors, filmed around the Atlanta area last year. This is a wonderful family film with some mystery and lots of adventure! A great film for the entire family!

Director, Jason Prisk reached out to TV/FILM actor, Angels volunteer and foster mommy, Niki Davis (who plays NSA Agent

Harms in the film) wanting to feature a RESCUE pup and felt Lisbeth was the perfect addition to film. No, she isn't a $1000 purebred pooch - she is a kill shelter survivor!

Lisbeth did a fantastic job and was a true professional! (Everyone on set definitely saw she was a star but we already knew that - ALL our rescues are!). Since the filming, Lisbeth has been adopted and is doing great! From kill shelter to foster home to movie star to what she always dreamed of…a FUREVER home! We thank the ATL FILM/TV community for putting focus on the rescue dogs!

Actor and AAU volunteer, Niki Davis is currently fostering 3 adorable parvo survivor pups (which makes 74 pups she has fostered over the last 4 years). Whether she is on set, at the grocery store, her sons' games or out on the town, she is always advocating for everyone to "adopt – don’t shop", to spay/neuter, to stop breed discrimination and to foster, adopt and volunteer!

Everyone can do SOMETHING! Don't close your eyes. Be their voice!

As they age, our dogs often suffer a decline in functioning. Their memory, their ability to learn, their awareness and their senses of sight and hearing can all deteriorate. This deterioration can cause disturbances in their sleep-wake cycles, making them restless at night but sleepy during the day. It can increase their activity level (resulting, for example, in staring at objects, wandering aimlessly or vocalizing more) or decrease their activity level (leading to less self-care and poor appetite). It can make them forget previously learned cues (commands) or habits they once knew well, such as house training and coming when called.

It can increase their anxiety and tendency to react aggressively. It can also change their social relationships with you and other pets in your home. Some pets may become more clingy and overdependent, while others become less interested in affection, petting or interaction.

Understanding the changes your dog is undergoing can help you compassionately and effectively deal with behavior problems that may arise in your dog’s senior years.

Be sure to report all changes you see to your dog’s veterinarian. Don’t assume that your dog is “just getting old” and nothing can be one to help him. Many changes in behavior can be signs of treatable medical disorders and there are a variety of therapies that can comfort your dog and manage his symptoms, including any pain he might be experiencing.

In addition to seeking professional help from your veterinarian and an animal behavior expert (such as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, CAAB or ACAAB) for the age-related behavior issues covered in this article, a key contributing factor to keeping your old-er dog healthy is to continue to play with him, exercise him and train him throughout his life. You will likely need to adapt play and exercise to his slower movements, reduced energy level, declining eyesight and hearing, and any medical conditions he may have.

Talk to a Certified Professional Dog Trainer in your area (CPDT) for fun ways to teach your old dog new tricks. Patiently keeping in mind his slower learning curve, you can have fun sharpening up rusty behaviors he once learned and teaching him some new behav-iors and tricks. A CPDT can also help you change your verbal cues to hand signals if your dog has lost his hearing and help you adjust your training for any physical impairments your dog may have developed.

There are many ways to keep your older dog’s life interesting and stimulating that don’t require vigorous physical effort. Just as with humans, dogs need to use their brains and bodies to maintain their mental and physical fitness.

As the saying goes, use it or lose it!

Dog’s Bedtime Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep, The king-sized bed is soft and deep. I sleep right in the center groove, My human beings can hardly move. I’ve trapped their legs, they’re tucked in tight, And here is where I pass the night. No one disturbs me or dares intrude, Til’ morning comes and “I want food!” I sneak up slowly to begin, And nibble on my human’s chin. For morning’s here, it’s time to play, I always seem to get my way. So thank you, Lord, for giving me This human person that I see. The one who hugs me and holds me tight, And shares their bed with me at night.

Remembering A Precious Angel

FROM FOSTER ANGELS AMONG US FOSTER, MELISSA SMITH:

Lil Earnest Hemmingway crossed the bridge last night in his adopted home.

He was senior with congestive heart failure. Such a sweet pup who was so loved the last year of his life – by his forever family, and his foster family alike.

“I'm so happy that I was part of his journey that led him from being a sick little stray with terrible, terrible ear infections to “Baxter” - the family dog who rode to school every day to drop off the kids; a dog who was so inspiring and loved that the carpool started providing dog treats for him, and the dog who was held in by his family in their loving arms as he crossed over.

My heart is broken at the same time. How could it not be? I know there are risks to having your heart broken when you foster any animal. Still, the benefit and the reward far surpass this pain of losing him twice.”

His family sent Melissa his last pics as he was being held on the start of his last journey “home”. Rest in peace lil’ Earny/Hemingway/Baxter.

Thank you, Melissa, for loving this sweet soul! Even senior rescues have life left to love, live and give so much to their fosters and adopters!

Former Angels Among Us Pet Rescue rescued pit bull and now foster failure, Graceful, aka Gracie, had a lovely morning visiting Best Friends Blood Bank in Decatur, GA where she signed up to be a blood donor! She passed all of her blood screening, and will donate blood every eight weeks for a year to help saves lives of other canines in need. Yes...Dogs need blood too! Eligible dogs need to be under 8 years olds and weigh over 50 pounds. Gracie will also be com-pensated $100 which she plans to donate to help rescue more dogs. Cats can donate, too.

Gracie was so calm and relaxed that when the nurse came in, she asked if Gracie had taken a Xanax. Not this girl! She's just that chill by nature. Best Friends Blood Bank drew the blood and also added fluids back under her skin to make sure she stayed hydrated. We were in and out in under 40 minutes. Plus, we got free swag! All in a day’s work for Gracie!

Best Friend's Blood Bank is located in De-catur, GA. They draw blood for dogs and cats. Dogs need to be under 8 years old and over 50 lbs.

They have a Facebook account. You can message them to book an appointment. Another way to save a life!

Way to go, Gracie!

The One, Perfect, Glorious Home

Cynthia Fuguet Mare, Angels Publications

I know as you read this that you are already someone who cares about rescue work. If you didn’t want to save unwanted, abandoned, or abused dogs and cats, you would not have come to know about Angels Among Us Pet Rescue. You probably don’t know the depths of our gratitude for your support in every way you share it, but I’m here to tell you one more time that you are invaluable, you are so appreciated, and you are an Angel.

What is it like to pull a dog from a terrible situation, have them vetted, and find them a foster home? With volunteers like you in our committed community of people who reach into their hearts and find a way to help, it is possible to do just that. But what does it truly mean?

Every one of us rescuers has, as a goal, finding a permanent home for each of our “saved” animals. But there is something more, and if you have fostered, you already know about this. If you are contemplating fostering, you will find out as soon as your fostered animal finds a way into your heart – which, believe me, won’t take long! Yes, we want a home for our fosters. But in our souls, in our hearts, and in our minds, we become focused on an even loftier goal: finding THE home.

Dogs are funny creatures. They express themselves in a million tiny ways, and when they bond with their rescuers, they seem to develop an uncanny ability to communicate just what their forev-er home should be like. Ask any rescuer and they can articulate clearly what kind of environment their foster dog should be in. You’ve seen the Angels Among Us descriptions of things such as, “Needs to be the only dog” or, “Would love to have an active family to spend time with me”, or, “I am a gentle and loving soul who wants nothing more than to be your companion wherever you go.”

But there is an intuitive subtext to this, and only the foster parents can really know how to find the place their foster should be for their lifetime. You see, their dogs tell them. There is a moment, as everything clicks into place, when the dog strides confidently over the threshold of their new home, or goes so joyfully with their new owner, that everyone witnessing it knows it is unmistakably the right match for the dog.

Once you’ve experienced this perfect synergy, this ultimate perfect ending to the urgently-begun, fraught-with-peril process of rescuing, it becomes unforgettable. And we rescuers yearn for this in-credible experience. It becomes a driving force, a goal that can’t be compromised. It sustains us like the power of prayer, or the love of a good person. It rejuvenates our weary minds, and gives us determination to move forward. And with this single-minded mission of finding THE home, we find the courage to keep on trying, to keep on saving, to keep on making the lives of unwanted animals matter.

HOME. A simple concept, but all-encompassing. Please continue to join us on our journey as we find these perfect endings. Only you can help us help our fantastic dogs and cats have the lives they should always live, in the places they know they should be. As each animal steps into their futures, and looks back at us to silently say, “This is it. I am truly home”, we give thanks for our supporters, you, our Angels who are truly “among us”.

Recently Angels Among Us foster and supporter Ashley Johnston celebrated a very special

“Gotcha Day” with her foster turned adoptee, Millie (formerly known as Nancy) and her

Mom, Jan Johnston - it has been 1 year since this precious girl went from “fostered pet” to

“forever pet”! In rescue, we call it “Gotcha Day” in lieu of Birthday, since this is the special

day they get to finally claim a second chance and forever life with their wonderful family!

Ashley told us, “Millie went from scared and alone in a nasty shelter to a safe foster home

with me, to being adopted into a wonderful forever home by my parents! This one of a kind,

incredibly sweet, thoughtful, loving and fun little girl is now a huge part of our family! We

love you so much, Millie!” Millie’s adopter, Jan Johnston, added “Rescuing and adopting

Millie was the best thing we’ve done in a long time! She is full of personality and we love

her so much!”

Happy Gotcha Day, Millie!

Celebrating “Gotcha Day”!

The Rescue Tree

Roots of caring, driven hearts

Strong selfless people each doing their part

Calling, testing, checking, pull

Another crisis, everyone’s full

Coming together, spreading around

Hoping in time a home will be found

Branches, each limb crucial to the task

Hoping the pieces will fall in place at last

Reaching, saving, helping, trying

Sometimes failing, often crying

Even strong limbs break under the strain

Other leaves, limbs there to soften the pain

Grow again, feel the sun

Unburden yourself; look at all you have done

Drink up the light, let go the strife

Know you made a difference by saving a life

The Connection Karen Dunkley, Angels Publications

“Here-this belonged to Abs, and I…we…want you to have it,” my friend and fellow rescuer said as she handed me a bright pink, slightly worn flying disc. And then she began to cry.

As AAUPR volunteers, Alicia and I were used to hanging out with our foster dogs at adoption events and had gotten to

know each other a little bit. On this day we were selling tee shirts at an Angels Among Us Pet Rescue event and chatting, enjoying the day. I mentioned that I wanted to teach my most recent “foster failure” Fig to be a disc dog, and much to my surprise Alicia replied “I used to do that competitively, with my girl Abs”, her eyes bright at the memory. And so we talked more about her girl, her most special dog. She had lost her last year.

Sometimes you have a connection with an animal that defies description; a bond. I have been lucky enough to have that too and so I understood her tears, the loss is so great.

Alicia told me about Abs and I listened, knowing this is all she has of her now, the memories. How strange that it happens that our dogs passed away around the same time, from the same disease-cancer, specifically, hemangiosarcoma. We shared our stories and our pain and how very much we missed them.

But our pups’ lives were so much more important than the way they died; they brought us joy, comfort, a connection. And here they were, even now, bringing Alicia and me closer into each other’s lives as friends.

Before I knew it, Alicia had gone to her car and retrieved something very special. Something she had kept close for a long while—a gift to pass on to me and my dog Fig: a bright pink plastic treasure.

As rescuers, we have a “connection”. Rescue is not for everyone, but for those of us called to it, we have that with each other. We are family, connected by a special kind of love. We are there for each other. We pass it on.

So I will take that battered pink disc and do my best with my new special pup, to

continue on…in honor of all of the dogs we’ve been lucky enough to have had in our lives.

And I will think of Alicia and her Abs, and me and my girl, too. The connection...living on.

The Stray By Jill Kaloustian

Please don't turn away from me, I want you all to know

What happens to a kitten when he's got nowhere to go.

When I was just a little tot my fur sleek and dark as night

My golden eyes shone brightly with a brilliant inner light.

Someone loved me then, you see, and we know that these are facts

Because I'm not scared of humans, I know their laps are made for cats.

But whether it was on purpose, by mistake or oversight

I found myself outside alone one dark and scary night.

The days flew by and seasons passed, I walked through rain then snow

As the months went by I found I'd grown up but still had nowhere to go.

Years of wandering took their toll and I'm now the cat you see

Broken, scarred and lonely because people don't love cats like me.

I walk with a limp and lost an ear in a fight I could not win

My paw pads are rough and calloused, bruises and cuts upon my skin.

I once 'hunted' toy birds for fun and now I must hunt for meat

I used to sleep in a warm soft bed but now I sleep out in the street.

I've heard the names you call me - Feral, Tom, Stray & even Pest

It's been years since I've heard "Sweet Kitty" - the name that I love best.

I am a stray, that much is true, but not by my own choice

And I need you to speak for me because I have no voice.

Please don't let people turn away - everyone must know

What happens to a kitten when he's got nowhere to go.

An Angels Update from Phoebe Rose (Shared by Phoebe Rose’s Foster Mom, Lori Huster – Mom of Mutt Muffin)

Dear Former Angel’s Foster Mom:

Look at me NOW! My new owners took me on a trip to the beach all by myself and introduced me to the ocean. Wow, I never knew anything like this existed. You told me when you dropped me off a month ago at my new home and cried while saying goodbye that I’d be living the good life and no one would hurt me anymore. That all the time I spent in that horrible, abusive hoarding situation would become a distant memory.

You promised me everything would be ok and that I deserved all the love and adoration I could get simply because I’m God’s creation. But WOW, you never said anything about a trip to the beach! What an adventure I’m having with the sun on my face and my feet in the sand and water. I love my new parents and fur siblings and I don’t think you could have found a better match for me. They give me so much love and attention, and they even let me sleep ON the bed! WOW! Can you believe it? Thank you so much for being such an important part of my life’s journey, and for saying YES to being an Angels Among Us foster mom and caring for me until my forever home came along. I’m the luckiest dog in the world!

LOOK AT ME! I’M LIVING THE GOOD LIFE NOW!

Love, Phoebe

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoebe Rose’s foster mom, had this to say about her former foster’s note:

“I received these pics from Phoebe Rose's (now Phoebe) new owners. I cried tears of happiness and smiled for her and them. The beach is a long way from the awful hoarding/breeding situation she was living in where she was not receiving the love and care she so desperately deserved. This is why I foster for Angels Among Us. I know that that the scared, sad suffering little dog I helped pulled from a cage will end up living a life far beyond anything they could ever imagine. I was but a small part in the journey to her new found freedom, and now her new owners are taking her the next step in her life adventure.”

Angels Featured Pet of the Month: Meet Mickey!

Here’s a boy who’s nothing but pure joy! If you don’t think dogs can smile, here’s a guy who will make you a believer. Mickey can grin ear-to-ear and does so 24/7. His foster mom says that he is the happiest dog in the world. He nuzzles. He cuddles. He makes people laugh. And the only thing that could make his world better now is finding a forever home.

He would add a sheer dose of happiness to any household. Maybe it could be yours.

Mickey is a 5 year-old shepherd/collie mix who is now about 50 pounds. He has stellar manners and the perfect energy level; he’s quiet when the family is quiet but is perky when someone is ready for a walk or play. The poor guy had a tough ride before Angels rescued him. He still bares the scars…literally. He has a few scars on his face and is missing a few teeth. But that doesn’t stop his contagious attitude and endearing personality. He is just so happy and appreciative to be healthy and thriving each day.

And what a good boy! Mickey is totally housetrained, walks politely on a leash and rarely barks. He loves other dogs and he loves big people. (He loves kids but is a little skittish around very little ones.)

He’s a real softie! Honestly. His fur is so wonderfully smooth and soft and he loves to be petted. Mickey has allergies and needs prescription food and some medication. But the little extra he needs is nothing compared to all he brings: an

abundance of love, affection and joy. And smiles. He is a very unique and special pup.

Please find out more about this happy, loving, perfectly behaved boy. Or consider adoption by contacting Angels Among Us Pet Rescue by email at [email protected]. Please visit their website at www.angelsrescue.org.

Thank you for opening your heart and your home to Mickey or any other pet through Angels Among Us. Your caring, compassion and involvement truly makes everybody smile. Especially Mickey.
