March 2016: Geneva Auto Show Review

Last of the Real Car Shows?Ever since the days of General Motors’Motorama in the 1950s, car shows were theplace where people could catch a glimpse ofthe automotive future. But in the last decade, automakers have spent less money on wildconcepts leaving the car shows lacking in suchfantastic displays.

Detroit and London’s loss has left Geneva asone of the remaining shows chosen to displaythe few radical concepts that remain. The longlist of unveilings at the show include manyglobal production debuts as well as thosespectacular design studies that make carshows so much better than simply visiting adealership.

For 2016, Geneva does have plenty ofproduction vehicle introductions. Volvo and Kiaproudly announced their newest wagon in theface of an onslaught of new crossovers andSUVs. Maserati pulled the cover off of the long-anticipated Levante crossover which shouldtake the brand to the next level in its shiftupscale. PSA and Toyota used the show tounveil the Citroen Space Tourer, PeugeotTraveller, and Toyota Proace triplet vans.

On the more fantastic side, the show was notlacking for exotics. After a decade, Bugattishowed its second-generation (under theVolkswagen banner) sports car in the form ofthe 1,500hp Chiron. Italian hypercar makerPagani christened their newest model as theHuara BC with only 800hp but also far lessweight than the Bug. Hailing from northernEurope, the Koenigsegg Regera harnessesmore than 1,500 hybrid horsepower and 80-unitproduction run to garner a $1.9 million pricetag. The Dutch brand Spyker showed itshandcrafted C8 Preliator which the ownerdrives when they are tired of more commoncars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris.

When seven-figure Bugatti and Koenigseggmodels aren’t enough, it’s the flights of fantasythat make this show. Opel echoed its classicsports coupe of the early 1970s in the Opel GTcoupe concept. Lamborghini’s Centenarioreflected on the 100th anniversary of founderFerruccio Lamborghini’s birth. And Rimacshowed of the Concept One with its ability totop 100km/h in 2.6 seconds under only electricpower. These are car show cars.

100km/h (62 mph) in about 2.9 seconds and gives the car a top speed

around 360km/h (224 mph)

Fuji

2016 Subaru XV concept•Previews the next generation of Subaru’s popular subcompact crossover

•Currently based on the Impreza, the concept hints that the next edition will continue the tradition with its similarity to the next-generation Impreza five-door

•Just a concept with no details given

traditional all-wheel drive and boxer four-cylinder engines

Geely

2017 Volvo V90•Following on the heels of the S90 sedan and XC90 crossover, the V90 large wagon is the non-crossover taking its very good looks from the S90 sedan

•The big luxurious passenger compartment sits ahead of a more-than-ample usable cargo hold, the type on which Volvo built its reputation

•Like the related XC90 crossover and S90 sedan, the V90 wagon will be

offered in three powertrain levels: T5 turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder, T6

with its supercharged and turbocharged four, or T8 adding in the hybrid

drivetrain

General Motors

2016 Opel GT concept•Paying homage to the original Opel GT, the new concept takes the idea and moves it into the 21st century without making the car “retro”

•Using the original’s long nose/short tail silhouette, the new concept doesn’t take its styling from the Corvette like the Stingray-derived original did

•Like the original, the modern GT gains its power from small engines, but

the concept’s turbocharged 1.0L three-cylinder generates 145hp and

pushes that power through a sequential transmission to the rear wheels

•Making a production version will be difficult since General Motors does

not currently have a rear-wheel drive platform that could underpin a

1,000kg (2,200lbs) sports car like this

•Three versions of the Ioniq will be offered initially

•A hybrid model will be the most popular model with its 1.6L gasoline four-

cylinder and six-speed dual clutch transmission

•Adding a charging port in the front fender, the Plug-in version increases

the battery capacity to 8.9kWh and ups motor output to 45kW giving a

50km (31-mile) all-electric range

•The all-electric version includes a 28kWh lithium-ion battery pack good for

a 250km (160-mile) range, with prices in the €38,000 (US$42,000) range

Spyker

2016 Spyker C8 Preliator•Spyker, based in the Netherlands, rarely introduces a new model, since they produce so few

•Two transmissions, manual or automatic, both six-speed, are offered on

the rear-wheel drive sports coupe

•Focusing on hand-built quality, the relatively slow (compared to other
