Sponsored By www.peakystriders.org.au Peaky Striders Inc 2019 Flashback Our regular weekly walks started off strongly but from May onwards it was noted members were not walking as frequently as past years. Some had medical procedures and were recuperating, but we also took a big hit with a large portion of the membership travelling, many overseas and some within Australia. Now that everyone has returned safely we can look forward to improvements in our walk numbers from here on in, at least until the next batch move offshore again! The men certainly outshone the women in being the first to complete the walk cards with Brian taking out the 1 st to 25, 50 and 75 then Paul the 1 st to 100. Congratulations guys, well done. Of the six sponsored walks this year, all but one (being the interstate event in Melbourne) saw an increase in participants which is very pleasing particularly for those members walking these events. The only additional event that attracted more than one member was the 7 Bridges Walk at the end of October when 4 Peakies, accompanied by Kate’s daughter Sarah, gained an extra stamp for their efforts. See more about this on page 2. We are still looking for a social secretary and the committee stepped in very successfully planning the second and third quarter events, even to ensuring we had fantastic weather on the days! 18 Peakies enjoyed the walk from Bundeena to Marley Beach in June thanks to Carol H, and 23 the Hacking River ferry cruise in September thanks to Jan. We saw four new members join us - Peggy Leto, Karen Sutton, Cheryl Sappey and Caralena Fitzsimmons. Unfortunately soon after joining Peggy suffered a foot injury followed by a knee injury which kept her out of action for the entire year. All going well she hopes to be back in January. The committee on behalf of all members thanked Maso’s for once again sponsoring our club. These additional funds certainly help us maintain a viable and vibrant group that can proudly walk the streets in our orange shirts and enjoy the benefits that this sponsorship provides to our presentation night. All in all it’s been a very good year! Still to come Christmas Party this afternoon/evening – Oatley Park, from 3pm Saturday December 7: Final breakfast for the year with special treats from Maureen. Thursday December 12 - Presentation Night: Put your name on list in meeting room if you are staying after the walk so that enough food can be ordered (which will be paid for out of the Maso’s sponsorship). 7 Bridges – October 27

Anne W sent us a couple of photos of Jen H, Anne, Kate and Kate’s daughter Sarah taken before setting out on the 28km walk, saying they “met up with Paul along the way. Although he started half an hour after us, he caught up with us, passed us and waited for us at the finishing line. He was amazing. Paul has some photos of all of us when we finished. A bit of an untidy bunch, a little sore but happy to achieve what we set out to do. Many highlights, the good spirited crowds, the wonderful scenery from each bridge, and challenging ourselves on a gorgeous day in such a spectacular city. The aches and pains will go but the memories will remain. We all loved it.” (Paul’s photos are intermingled with Anne’s)

Anne’s Breakfast – November 9

Once again the Wilson family put on a fantastic spread after our walk on this very chilly but sunny morning which was actually a welcome break from the few hot days beforehand. A big thank you goes out to Anne, Kate, David, Mark and Amy as well as Jan, Cheryl and Lynne B who also did their bit to make this a very enjoyable morning. Starting out on Anne’s wonderful balcony everyone very quickly moved inside and out the back which was sheltered from the wind. Here are a few of Diane and Carol K’s photos but with everyone moving around some people are still missing!

Paddy says “Mick, I’m thinking of buying a Labrador. “Blow that” says Mick “have you seen how many of their owners go blind?” Mick says to Paddy “What ya talkin into an envelope for?” “I’m sending a voicemail ya fool!” 19 paddies go to the cinema, the ticket lady asks “Why so many of you?” Mick replies “The film said 18 or over”.

A little Irish humour

The Bush Telegraph

Cheryl’s slice as promised

PINEAPPLE-PASSIONFRUIT CHEESECAKE

Crumb Crust 185g (6 oz) plain sweet biscuits, 90g (3 oz) butter, 1 tsp cinnamon Melt butter, crush biscuits finely; combine butter, biscuits and cinnamon; mix well. Line 18cm X 28cm (7 in X 11 in) lamington tin with aluminium foil. Press crumb crust over base only. Refrigerate while preparing filling.

Filling 250g (8 oz) packaged cream cheese, 125g (4 oz) cottage cheese, ½ cup condensed milk, 910g (1 lb 13 oz) can crushed pineapple, 4 passionfruit, 1 tbsp gelatine, 1¼ cups cream, 1 passionfruit extra

Drain pineapple, reserve 1 cup syrup. Put reserved syrup into saucepan, sprinkle gelatine over, stir over low heat until gelatine is dissolved. Refrigerate until almost set. Beat cream cheese, sieved cottage cheese and condensed milk in bowl until very soft and creamy. Gradually add pineapple syrup mixture. Fold in pineapple and passionfruit pulp. Beat half the cream until soft peaks form, fold into cheese mixture. Pour on to prepared base, refrigerate until set. Decorate with remaining whipped cream, spoon over extra passionfruit pulp, swirl into the cream.

Free compost and mulch giveaway Georges River Council has a new mulch and compost giveaway program starting Saturday November 16 and every second Saturday thereafter to April 2020, between 8am and noon. Free compost will be supplied in bags (maximum one bag per resident per event) and free mulch will be provided loose to residents (bring your own shovel).

As we have a number of keen gardeners in our group, thought this item could be of interest. Compost and mulch is great for your garden, especially during times of drought. It helps to retain moisture and nutrients in the soil, reducing the need for watering. The collection point is the old quarry site known as Quarry Reserve Depot, 29 Hurstville Road, Hurstville Grove and residents will need to show their proof of address then self-load the product into their own vehicle.

Member profiles Come on, folks – let’s make 2020 the year that we at least double the number of profiles in our membership.

We have 55 members and only 14 profiles in 2 years! All sorts of excuses have been put forward – I’ve got nothing much to say, I am not interesting enough, I don’t like talking about myself, it’s on my to do list. Chat to Carol K or Diane who are only too happy to help you put one together. You will find it is not such a daunting task after all and will go a long way to familiarising all walkers with their constant companions.

Thank you As the year draws to a close, the only thing remaining is for me to thank everyone for their support of the newsletter, particularly those who have sent in reports, photos, recipes and other interesting titbits for our amusement and/or information. All contributions are gratefully accepted so please keep feeding me stuff and I will do my best to relay it back to you in print. On behalf of the committee, I wish you all a very happy Christmas with family and friends and hope to see you all back fresh and sparkling on January 14. Cheers, Carol K.

Social Secretary The Committee remains hopeful that one or two members will fill this role in 2020. It is not arduous and can be FUN! Many hands are on deck to help out along the way so please think about it, chat to others and put your hands up to help make another memorable social year.
