Presenting and Selling Your Design: Build Value and Make Sales

Tuesday April 16th, 2019 5 to 8:30 pm Bangor Maine

It has been determined through surveys that the majority of kitchen designers wish they made a larger income for the work they do. Much of this is due to the fact that many designers have a lack of sales skills and often do not take part in self-improvement to

gain these skills. It is rare that kitchen and bath designers acquire skills in design as well as sales in fact most have no specific sales training at all. My training is specifically de-signed to merge selling techniques with design presentations to give designers tools they

can use immediately to improve their sales, communicate better with clients, and sell more of their work.

Meet Duane Becker—perhaps you have seen him at one of our meetings, or maybe at KBIS? A national presenter at KBIS for multiple years now, where they turned people away again this year. Duane Becker has

been in the Kitchen and Bath industry for over 13 years, starting as a Cabinetmaker in Portland, Maine building custom cabinetry, window sash, doors and millwork. Since then he has spent time as a kitchen de-signer in the Portland area and more recently, a factory representative for Elkay manufacturing wood prod-

ucts division, supporting one of their exclusive cabinet lines. With a total of 17 years in sales, he enjoys training Kitchen Designers in not only some key ideas to design but also, selling techniques to help them present their designs and motivate their clients to purchase.

“What Is Net Profit and How Do I Make It”

Tuesday, May 21, 2019 Black Point Inn, Scarborough Maine

Understand how to make your passion into profit. Every business needs to make a profit to be successful and the construction industry is no different. In this session, you will identify revenue sources to include design fee and product mark-up per-centages. Learn how to categorize expenses and how to track them for proper ac-counting and tax records. Learn the formulas to for mark-up and margin and iden-tify the difference between the two. An emphasis will be placed on how mistakes affect the bottom line and how to avoid them. The attendee will leave with an un-derstanding of the “business” side of the design team. Learn how mistakes affect the bottom line.

Roseann Freitas, Vice-President/Business Manager of Archipelago Hawaii, has been working in the operations/business side of the design industry since 2005.

Roseann oversees the business/operations side of Archipelago Hawaii. Her responsibilities include accounting functions, HR duties, and project purchasing coordination. In addition to the financial side, Roseann has a strong marketing background. She coordinates the client/media packets, press releases, advertising, client events, social media, and media requests. Roseann is the current NKBA Aloha Chapter Programs chair.

Registration will be opened after the April meeting at nkbamaine.org

NETWORKING Would you like to meet with and get to know industry members in your area better?

In the Portland Maine area we have a “relaxed” group that meets once a month for lunch to catch up and keep tabs on happening in our industry. It was suggested that similar groups would be a welcome addition to other areas in Maine, especially in our winter months. Get a group started today for your region! We would love it if we could have four more groups around the state that might meet be-tween the NKBA meetings. This would not be directly affiliated with the chapter, would not be a CEU event, but we could announce your meetings in this newsletter and on our social media platforms.

2020-2021 Election cycle Self-nominations for the NKBA Maine Chapter Council will begin in May.

Your chapter will only continue to exist with volunteerism. There are term limits for

council positions; one can not serve more than 2 terms or 4 consecutive years.

The chair positions opening for the 2020-2021 term are President, Programs, and

Communications. The President position has to be held by an NKBA member that has

sat on an NKBA board, and completed their term, at some point in the past.

Subcommittee’s are key for the new 5 person council structure to flourish. We need

subcommittee members for Programs, Secretary/Treasurer, Communications, Mem-

bership. These can be short term task/event oriented or year round subcommittee

positions. It’s a great way to get your feet wet!

Please contact someone from the recruitment committee now, if you are interested in or

would like more information on either a council, subcommittee or task-force position.

Your Recruitment committee: Sherry McFarland (Heartwood Kitchens), Chair. Tarsha

Richmond (Shads Custom Countertops), Beth Forbes (Coastal Cabinet Group) and

Danica Jacobson (The Lighting Center)

Master Level Sponsorships

There are still a few opportunities left to be a Master Level Sponsor for the Maine Chapter. We only allow one master sponsor per industry category per year - the available sponsorships are the Accessories, Appliance, Design Software, Lighting/Electrical, and Plumbing. We are grateful to Gran-ite Design and M. R. Brewer for their support and dedication to our members. They are our Surfaces and Cabinetry Mas-ter Level Sponsors for the chapter. SPONSORSHIP “WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT”

You might be asking what is with all the sponsor-ships this year? Well in a nutshell—speakers, venues and food are costly! This is the chapters 30th anniversary year, and your council is trying to do something different, educational and fun for its members. On average—speakers can cost the chapter $1200-$3000 to bring to a meeting. Our nicer venues charge either high food costs or room charges. Add it all together and either we have sponsors or we would have to charge $75 or more for a regular chapter meeting.

What’s in it for you the vendor? Exposure, net-working, with a little fun thrown in there. The speakers we are trying to bring you this year are beyond the normal NKBA speaker. They speak to all area’s of the industry—the technolo-gy, the forward thinking, the legacy, the here and now as well as the future.. However, we need sponsors to bring them to Maine AND we need the industry in Maine to show this is what you want to see!

SO—interested in sponsoring? Please call a chap-ter council member (go to nkbamaine.org for con-tact information)

WANT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE WHAT IS IT???? CALL US!!!!!!!!

For our Fall Vendor, Education and Anniversary event’s key speakers, we are working to have

Virginia Tech’s “FutureHaus” Project Architect, Bobby Vance, and National speaker and

podcaster, LuAnn Nigara present to our design community.

“FutureHaus” is developing different ways to build homes using technology to make homes

affordable, adaptable and energy efficient. LuAnn’s topic “Design is Business” is a great

presentation for all businesses affiliated with our industry.

Please consider sponsoring one of these speakers and bring them to the Maine building and

design community.

2020 MAINE EVENTS

Your council is already looking at 2020 for our chapter meetings, sponsorship needs, and what

you want! We have our big planning meeting in June—if you have an idea for a meeting, or

something you would like more knowledge on PLEASE reach out to a council member now!

2020 will hopefully be the return of the Design Contest—shaped after nationals applications,

with similar requirements. We are working to find a few photographers around the state that

might take photo’s for members at a reduce price.

2020 in 2020—is another goal—design software training in Maine is the number one class re-

quested in our surveys over the past few years. They have stringent hardware requirements for

where they teach the classes. Our programs subcommittee is looking into options within the

state to keep costs down for employers.

We do pay attention to those surveys we send out—please respond! We usually have 78 re-

spondents that open the emails - but only a dozen or so fill them out!! Apathy is going to kill

this chapter!

WIFM _ Membership and what's in it for me…….

A FEW NEWS ITEMS FROM NATIONAL • New Specialty Badge Program The NKBA has developed a brand-new educational platform, the Specialty Badge Program. The first five badges launched during KBIS 2019 which include Cabinetry, Re-modeling, Living in Place, Floor Plans & Specifications and Sales & Marketing. As a mi-cro-credential program, affording all individual NKBA members the opportunity to ac-quire focused knowledge in a given domain, the program is a complement to our repu-table certification programs, and is a type of personalized learning, as well as an educa-tional stepping stone. One of the best features of this program is that all the content material has been developed, endorsed, and will continuously be updated by recognized and respected subject matter experts within our association. The end goal is the ability to communicate knowledge in a single competency within the kitchen and bath industry. Once participants successfully completes the necessary requirements they will receive a digital badge of achievement, which they can use as a marketing tool.

• Jobs Board All NKBA members, corporate partners and sponsors may use the Jobs board to attract talent to the kitchen and bath industry, post and recruit for full-time, part-time or contract positions, and let students know about internships. Posted jobs will remain ac-tive on the site for 30 days. After that period, the posting will be removed, but the com-pany that posted the job can easily reactivate the position if it has not been filled. For ad-ditional questions, contact Member Relations at: [email protected]. • 2020 Design Competition NKBA will begin accepting applications on June 1, 2019.
