Signs & Symbols By Cynthia Reyes In our personal relationships we may think we know someone so well until something pro-found happens that stop us dead in our tracks. Never in our wildest dreams did we ever think by word or deed, our belief in them would change forever, becoming the pivotal mark where we part ways or grow in a deeper relationship with them. This is what happens in today’s gospel. Like in any wedding celebration there is much love flowing between the bride and groom, among their parents, and the invited guests. All are sending out joyous well wishes, drinking the best wine, however in this case, the last wine served was the best. The gospel writer takes note: “You have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus apparently out does the wine growers of his time. He saves the best for last, or does he really? He has acted at the persistence of his mother whom he calls, “woman.” Incidentally, the only other time that Jesus calls Mary “woman” is at the foot of the cross at his crucifixion. Jesus takes the empty jars, asks the servants to fill them with water, and he performs his first miracle, changing the water into wine: the sign and symbols of our sacramental lives as Catholics. Water and wine used in the Sacraments of Initiation of Baptism and Eucharist. Through these sac-raments we are born again. If we continue to read the Gospel of John we will continue to see in the person of Nicodemus that once again water and spirit are central to our existence as children of God. Profound symbols that shape and point to a greater reality of who Jesus is. We come to be-lieve as his followers, celebrating at our Eucharistic Table each and every Sunday. The greatest feast, Jesus himself!

DID YOU KNOW? Talk to your children about the fine line between obedience and protection Children learn from an early age that adults are figures of authority— teachers, police officers, bus drivers, babysitters. We need our children to listen to the people who are in charge of them, but this message must be communicated so that children know it’s okay to stick up for themselves too. Adult predators may try to use their authority to gain control over their victims. Children should know that when it comes to private parts, secrets, and things that seem dangerous or wrong, they shouldn't worry about disobeying the adult in charge, and to a trusted adult or a parent. For a copy of the VIRTUS® parent’s guide., visit http://www.archdiocese.org/org/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
