The Foyle Film Festival celebrates its 25th year with a high quality programme of feature films, animations, workshops, outreach and special events, aimed at primary, post-primary schools, colleges, and universities. This year, to mark its quarter century, the festival takes as its main theme MILESTONES - celebrating inspirational individuals and events that have left behind an enduring legacy.

To mark the life and achievements of Apple founder Steve Jobs, this year’s education programme offers a special Pixar Retrospective honouring the legacy of this creative and innovative man. The programme pays tribute to the late Neil Armstrong with screenings and workshops highlighting the excitement, wonder and inspiration of the moon landings and space

exploration. While special screenings and workshops mark the Titanic Centenary and Charles Dickens’ Bicentennial respectively. The education programme also takes a digital journey through the peace process from its earliest days to the recent historic meeting and handshake between The Queen and Sinn Fein’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games celebrated the best of human achievement and endeavour. The success of the games inspired millions of people around the world, and provided a lasting legacy for future generations. The example of the London 2012 Olympics serves as an inspiration for our own city as we move towards hosting the City Of Culture 2013. The festival education programme

uses film screenings and workshops to explore the power of sport to both inspire and to cross boundaries through shared goals and aspirations.

The festival is passionate about discovering and nurturing young filmmakers and, to support this, introduced the CCEA Moving Image Arts (MIA) Student Awards. Sponsored by Derry City Crystal, the Foyle Film Festival presents the unique awards annually to students at the Festival in Derry/Londonderry, and also at the Cinemagic Festival in Belfast.

Over the last 25 years the Foyle Film Festival has become renowned for attracting top industry professional to the city. Past guests have included high profile names such as: Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Neil Jordan, Wim Wenders, Kenneth Branagh, Christiane Kubrick, Andrew Eaton, Roddy Doyle, Stephen Frears, Jimmy McGovern - to name but a few.

In 1999 the Foyle Film Festival became an Oscar® affiliated festival - one of only a handful of such events to enjoy this honour. As a result, recipients of the festival’s Light In Motion (LIM) Film Awards, in the categories of Best Short Film and Best Animated Short Film, qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Annual Academy Awards®.

This year’s festival education programme also showcases the Nerve Centre’s most recent innovative project Fab Lab. A Fab Lab is a fully kitted, high tech fabrication laboratory in which practically anything can be designed and prototyped, using state of the art machines. The Fab Lab gives everyone in the community from small children through to entrepreneurs and businesses, the capability to turn their ideas and concepts into reality. The Foyle Film Festival is offering schools a unique opportunity to engage

with Fab Lab through a series of innovative workshops that can be used to stimulate creativity and help children to realise their full potential.

The Foyle Film Festival is the flagship project of the Nerve Centre. The Nerve Centre is Northern Ireland’s leading creative media arts centre spearheading a diverse range of arts events, cutting edge projects, training opportunities, state-of-the-art production facilities, and Creative Learning Centres in Derry~Londonderry and Belfast.

The festival acknowledges the talent, expertise, and dedication, of the management and staff of the Nerve Centre as a driving force behind the development and enduring success of the Foyle Film Festival.

The festival acknowledges the support of it’s main funders Northern Ireland

Screen and Derry City Council.

In 2012 the Foyle Film Festival celebrates a MILESTONE 25th year by planning for and looking towards the future.

With Pixar, Steve Jobs changed the film industry forever. Until the Apple founder came along and rescued LucasFilms’ fledgling computer graphics division, animation in Hollywood was a dying art.

There’s never been a movie studio with an unbroken streak of hit movies like Pixar. From the original TOY STORY to FINDING NEMO to Cars, RATATOUILLE, and TOY STORY 3, the animation wizards at Pixar have won over the industry, forcing Hollywood to change how it makes films. Now people expect great computer-animated films. And it never would have happened without Steve Jobs. Apple’s late leader leaves behind a vibrant legacy of pioneering efforts in the fields of high tech and entertainment, from the Mac, iPhone, iPad to Pixar. To mark this MILESTONE, the 25th Foyle Film Festival pays tribute to Steve Jobs with a special PIXAR RETROSPECTIVE.

The retrospective features special screenings in the Brunswick Moviebowl of the animated classics: TOY STORY 3, WALL-E, THE INCREDIBLES, and A BUG’S LIFE.

RECYCLING/SAVING THE PLANET/

FRIENDSHIP Seven centuries have passed and humans are history. Overpopulation and mass consumerism have literally buried the planet in waste, forcing humans to flee by spaceship and delegate robots to clear up the mess. The monumental task of clearing it all up has fallen to the logical evolution of the micro chipped wheelie-bin: a little robot named Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, or Wall-E for short.

Seven hundred years later, executives at the Buy n Large Corporation have aborted the clean-up operation, but they forget to deactivate solar-powered Wall-E, who toils on in blissful ignorance, with only a loyal cockroach and a VHS videotape of Hello, Dolly! for company. Then his life changes with the arrival of a robotic Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator - or Eve. It turns out that even robots can fall in love.

The film’s apocalyptic vision of a world rendered uninhabitable by mankind’s rapacious materialism has been interpreted as An Inconvenient

Truth for children. ‘WALL-E is Al Gore’s worst-case global warming nightmare made real,’ the Toronto Star noted.Won an Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film.

“It’s a landmark in modern moviemaking that lifts you up on waves of humor, heartbreak and ravishing romance. Want proof that animation can be an art form? It’s all there in the groundbreaking WALL-E.”

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“Involves a little work on the part of the audience, and a little thought, and might be especially stimulating to younger viewers.”

to go off to college, Buzz, Woody and the rest of his loyal toys are troubled about their uncertain future. TOY STORY 3 is a comical adventure in Disney Digital 3D that lands the toys in a room full of untamed tots who can’t wait to get their sticky little fingers on these “new” toys. It’s full-scale pandemonium as they try to stay together, ensuring “no toy gets left behind.” Meanwhile, Barbie comes face to plastic face with Ken (yes, that Ken).

“This is one of those films that goes straight for your heart - and warms it.”

Jason Korsner, UK Screen

“It hits every but-ton from laughter to tears and lifts you up on waves of visual dazzlement…And the way the Pixar wizards re-create a sense of childhood wonder is…near genius.”

HELPING OTHERS

An ant colony spends its days gathering food for the grasshoppers who provide protection. When an accident prone ant named Flik accidentally sabotages the offering and the evil grasshopper leader threatens to kill the colony if they do not have double the food by the end of summer, Flik sets out on a mission to find heroic ants to protect his kind from the grasshoppers. Instead of heroes he comes back with a band of misfit circus performers who endear themselves to the ants and come up with a crazy plan to rid the colony of the grasshoppers.

“One of the great movies - a triumph of storytelling

Like so many things in THE INCREDIBLES, no matter how fantastic they get, the more they remain like every other dysfunctional family. They love each other and aggravate each other in equal measure. This is the heart of the story - and there is no moment in the movie where we’re ever in doubt of it. The best CG animated caricature of humans to this point. Double Oscar® winner.

“Pixar’s incredible Incredibles movie is… a story that’s really about the importance of family and what yours can accomplish if you stick together. It’s also about being unafraid to stand out, a movie about the importance of actually achieving and being rewarded for it.”

CinemaBlend.com

“The best film of 2004 - and the best superhero movie ever.”

FAMILY/RELATIONSHIPS

RESPONSIBILITY/HELPING OTHERS

THE INCREDIBLES is a riveting entertainment, with danger, excitement, intensity, and (gasp!) a body count, torture and explosions well into double figures. This is a U-rated family feature with a pleasant bite. The Parrs are no average family: they are a family with superhero gifts. Unfortunately, they and their superhero compatriots have been ostracised, due to a cheerfully satirised lawsuit culture, and are hidden from the populace by MiB figures, who relocate them time after time when their powers are detected.

Bears live upstairs and mice live downstairs and never the

twain shall meet. That’s just the way it is.

This delicate balance between the species is blown wide apart when Ernest, a large, solitary and rather grumpy bear meets Célestine, a wide-eyed orphan mouse who previously never believed that big bears even existed. Eventually he welcomes her into his home. Despite the company and support that they give one another, and against all odds, this is a friendship that flies in the face of the established order of things. Before long the mice and bear authorities, fearing the change that they are confronted with, are forced to work together to address the problem presented by our two heroes. This exceptional film brings life to Gabrielle Vincent’s enchanting characters and her beautifully drawn animal world.

Harriet Tubman helped hundreds of American slaves escape along the secret route to freedom known as the Underground Railroad. Born a slave herself, she fled from Maryland to freedom in Philadelphia in 1849. For the next 10 years she made repeated secret trips back to Maryland, leading over 300 escaped slaves north to freedom in Canada. Her success at shepherding others to safety earned her the nickname “the Moses of her People” and made her a lasting symbol of the American anti-slavery movement.

It took many tries and numerous crashes before they finally perfected flight. It was their simple tests and experiences that allowed us to develop ways to travel through the sky with very little strife.

This sentimental story follows the arrival of a new teacher at a remote boys school in 1949 France (the war is a largely unspoken but looming presence). With disciplinary problems rampant, and the policies of the old-fashioned headmaster not helping, Monsieur Mathieu

decides to introduce choral singing as a way to bridge the gap with his students. An uplifting tale about a masterful teacher who put his heart into his work and changed the lives of his students forever. Features a soundtrack of beautiful music.

HEROISM/REMEMBERANCE

In 1912, the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic sails from Southampton with 2207 passengers on board. They excitedly dine and dance and the sea is incredibly calm. Then a lookout spots

an iceberg looming up directly ahead. The boat steers away, but the submerged part of the berg rips a 300-foot gash under the waterline. The crew realise the vessel will sink in less than three hours. As those on board realise their fate, calm gives way to panic. There is a rush to the lifeboats, but there are not enough for all the passengers...Golden Globe winner.

“A Night to Remember is moving, intensely so, but such a word misses the point. The film animates deep fears, our most primal responses to danger, and unexpected acts of selfless-ness…Covering all of the

emotional bases (greed, fear, courage and restraint), at heart this is an intensely humanistic film. People, not profits, matter.” – Damian Cannon, Movie Reviews UK

To accompany the screening of A Night To Remember, this two hour workshop will see students facilitated in the creation of a Digital History Book telling the story of the Titanic. Using film clips, archive images and audio, learners will present their versions of the Titanic Story and develop a hands on engagement with this iconic story.

FREE RESOURCES FOR SCHOOLS: The first school to book for this event will receive a FREE copy of Andrew Wilson’s acclaimed book ‘Shadow Of The Titanic’ and a FREE Titanic Resource Pack.

‘Shadow Of The Titanic’ was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the famous luxury ocean liner. It sheds new light on this story by showing how the disaster continued to shape the lives of a cross-section of passengers who escaped the sinking ship. The echoes of that night reverberated through the lives of each of the 705 survivors. Yet little has been written about what happened to them after the tragedy. How did they remember that terrible night? How did they cope? Using archival research and interviews with family members, Wilson offers a unique take on this fascinating story.

TITANIC RESOURCE PACK: Participating school will receive this fascinating resource pack containing replica historic items about the Titanic. It will be of great educational benefit for school history lessons and for anyone with an interest in the topic. The educational pack includes: daily graphic newspaper, advertising flyers, sheet music, dinner menus, passenger booklet, assorted paperwork, distress telegram, plus miscellaneous images and cards.

One of our favorite natural history subjects, the good old dinosaur, gets a makeover in this fantastically ambitious and groundbreaking documentary. Based on cutting-edge paleontology and the latest fossil records, see Dinosaurs as you’ve never seen them before in this exciting new film that combines cutting-edge effects and extraordinary scientific discoveries to breathe new life into these legendary beasts. Against stunning backdrops that span Jurassic times through to the Ice Age, the film presents some familiar

faces as well as some new discoveries from the past ten years; including the biggest plant-eaters that ever walked the Earth, it is an unmissable experience for both young and old. Narrated by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (Encounters at the End of the World, Cave of Forgotten Dreams), Dinotasia is fantastic journey to an ancient and mysterious world, all ruled over by the mighty Dinosaur. The film uses CGI to bring the stories to life, but draws on animation’s birth in silent film and early Disney to create proper, traditional visual storytelling.

CREATIVITY/INNOVATION/AMBITION

The 25th Foyle Film Festival has joined forces with The Digital Film Company to provide an introductory workshop in what’s set to be one of the biggest growth areas in TV and film production over the next few years.

According to Neil Richards, “Up to now, stereo 3D has been the realm of big budget feature films and blue-chip TV productions, but all that is changing with the move

to internet delivery and widespread use of mobile platforms for viewing. The demand for 3D content looks set to explode now that 3D TVs cost no more than conventional sets and “glasses-free” tablets, laptops and computers are becoming widespread. The technology is changing at the production and post-production end too, with the arrival of inexpensive 3D cameras, rigs, and stereoscopic software editing now possible on Mac and PC computers. Production costs have fallen as equipment becomes cheaper and experience has been gained within the industry.”

This introductory 3D workshop covers basic stereo 3D principles, terminology and human physiological constraints leading to an explanation of the factors that produce good and bad 3D viewing experiences. Stereo 3D technology, standards, cameras, displays and 3D cinema are then explained. Emphasis in the last half of the workshop is on hands-on filming with the footage reviewed live on 3D TVs. community from small children through to entrepreneurs and businesses, the capability to turn their ideas and concepts into reality.

If you’re a school and are looking to stimulate creativity and spark innovation, then Fab Lab is the ideal place to start. Fab Lab can help children realise their potential and go beyond the classroom boundaries.

The Nerve Centre’s Fab Lab is a partnership with the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is one of the first to open in Ireland. It joins a network of similar labs around the world in exploring the possibilities of exciting new fabrication technology.

Students will make their own personalised key rings - specially commissioned for this year’s 25th Foyle Film Festival. Students will also have the opportunity to design and fabricate another large-scale project (for example creating their own dinosaur) that they can take back into the classroom.

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

Starring Virginia McKenna, this powerful ten minute short film takes a journey through a day in the life of stroke victim Elsie. Elsie craves compassion and

understanding of the person she is inside, rather than the useless “carcass” she may appear on the outside. Elsie makes a silent but heartfelt plea for her carers to “look closer...see...me”.

What Do You See? has been acknowledged as one of the most valuable tools to highlight dignity and respect for the elderly. The film has been used around the world to re-enforce person centered care and the expectation of treating others as you would wish to be treated no matter what age, race, colour, creed or disability. The film was made by Amanda Waring when her mother, the acclaimed actress Dame Dorothy Tutin, was being treated for leukaemia and Amanda witnessed the devastating effect that the lack of compassionate care had on her mind, body, and spirit.

This heart wrenching experience drove Amanda to not only move and campaign for her mother to ensure her end of life care was full of the compassion, respect and dignity that she deserved, but compelled her to want to help others too. It was with this sheer emotive determination that she went on to produce what is now renowned worldwide as the best training film for care providers.

The creation of the award winning film What Do You See? has since paved the way for a series of further films produced by Amanda, with endorsements from The Royal College of Nursing and many other institutes and societies, for use with staff training.

WED 28 NOV 12:30 - 2:30PM FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL CITY OF DERRY CRYSTAL AWARDS FOR CCEA MOVING IMAGE ARTS 2012

The 25th Foyle Film Festival continues its support for the annual CCEA showcase of the best short films from Moving Image Arts students. The Foyle Film Festival established this unique award a number of years ago with the support and sponsorship of Michael Bond from City of Derry Crystal, and this annual event has gone from strength to strength. The Foyle Film Festival presents these unique awards to students during the annual Festival in Derry/Londonderry, and also during the Cinemagic Festival in Belfast.

CCEA’s Moving Image Arts is a modern and dynamic GCSE and A-Level subject that gives students the opportunity to explore and develop their

creativity and digital literacy through the production of their own films and animations.

The festival is delighted to once again celebrate and highlight the talent, imagination, and creativity of the MIA students by awarding the beautiful City of Derry Crystal Awards for the best films of the year. The 2012 event will also showcase a competitive GCSE entry for the first time since the introduction of the new course in 2009.

It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that the Foyle Film Festival provides a platform for the work of these budding young filmmakers from all over Northern Ireland. The festival hopes to be accepting the work of MIA students into the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition - which is Oscar affiliated - in the not too distant future.

a mountain. Edward is the creation of an elderly inventor who dies before he can replace Edward’s scissorhands with conventional hands. The nurturing Peg is protective of Edward and invites him to come live with her family. One of the film’s jokes is that Peg’s job as an Avon lady makes her an outsider like Edward. Although her life on the surface resembles the rest of the town’s, she is the one who embraces Edward and accepts his difference. The world in which Edward finds himself is a model of dull conformity and although he is initially accepted by the community, as an entertaining oddball, they cruelly reject him when things go wrong.

Edward’s experience mirrors director Tim Burton’s own struggle to survive the bland, conformist world of his youth. Burton felt isolated and misunderstood, and Edward emerged as a character: “who wants to touch but can’t, who was both creative and destructive… It was the feeling that your image and how people perceive you are at odds with what is inside you.” - Tim Burton

“Depp artfully expresses the fierce longing in gentle Edward; it’s a terrific performance… Edward Scis-sorhands isn’t perfect. It’s something better: pure magic.” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Based on the Charles Dickens classic. Orphan Pip rises from humble circumstances thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Moving through London’s class-conscious world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new status to pursue Estella, a beautiful, heartless heiress he has always loved. The shocking truth behind his fortune will have devastating consequences to everyone he cares about.

Directed by Mike Newell and scripted by ‘One Day’ author David Nicholls, the film features Helena Bonham Carter as Miss

Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch. Of his new take on a classic tale, Newell explains “I’ve tried to make a film that is true to the theatrical vividness, energetic characters and high colour that (Dickens) is loved for.” Nicholls revealed last year that he had written a new ending for his “thriller” version of the film. “Dickens came up with two endings - one which is incredibly bleak and one which is unrealistically romantic and sentimental,” he said last November. “Neither are quite satisfactory and we’ve come up with an ending that is somewhere in between.” He also said the film would give a glimpse of Miss Havisham’s wedding, an event that has not been seen in previous movie versions.

This educational screening will include a special introduction by one of the cast members. Based on the former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo’s book of the same name, Private Peaceful is the story

of the unbreakable bond between two brothers from their childhood in rual Devon to the battlefields of the First World War. When young Tommo Peaceful volunteers to fight, his protective older brother Charlie follows him to Flanders. But it is here that both experience the brutal nature of war, far removed from family life and their rivalry for the love of Molly Monks. Private Peaceful is a searingly powerful and emotional story of adolescence, heroism and fierce family loyalties that would never be broken.

“It should be shown and read in book form in class-rooms from upper primary onwards. Morpurgo’s great skill is to write hard stuff for children that they can accept as authentic and from which they can draw resilience…

In Morpurgo’s writing, the pity stems from the poetry, something that also has been exceptionally well translated into film here. Take your children (and a box of tissues).” - Katharine Quarmby, The Independent

“One small step for man... one giant leap for mankind.”

Between 1968 and 1972, the world watched in awe each time an American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon. In the Shadow of the Moon brings together for the first, and last time, surviving crew members from every single Apollo mission that flew to the Moon, and allows them to tell their remarkable story in their own words. With the recent passing of Neil Armstrong - the man who first stepped foot on the Moon and uttered the immortal words quoted above - this milestone is all the more significant. Beautifully shot, this riveting first-hand testimony is interwoven with visually stunning archive

material, as well as NASA films and materials that had not been opened in over 30 years. There is Earth, spinning in space, a blue and green paradise ringed with clouds. And there is the moon’s surface, up close and forbidding, with shadowy craters like pockmarks: a place of absolute desolation.

Only 12 men walked upon the moon’s surface and they remain the only human beings to have stood on another world. Even in the era of shuttles, space stations and ‘tourist’ astronauts that is still a remarkable statistic and milestone, illustrating both how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.

It’s Dublin 1979 and life is about to change for 13-year-old Maeve who’s trying to make sense of everything all at once - bodies, boys, friendships and family. Her best mates, Ruth, Claire and Orla, are more experienced in the ways of the world. They wear bras already (except Claire the feminist) and they’ve all had boyfriends, except for Maeve. When Maeve

CAMPAIGNING

An experiment in democracy is taking place in Wuhan, the most populous city in central China. For the first time ever, the students in grade three at Evergreen Primary School in Wuhan, China have been asked to elect a class monitor. Traditionally appointed by the teacher, the class monitor holds a powerful position, helping to control the students, keeping them on task and doling out punishment to those who disobey. The teacher has chosen three candidates: Luo Lei (a boy), the current class monitor; Cheng Cheng (a boy); and Xu Xiaofei (a girl). Each candidate is asked to choose two assistants to help with his or her campaign.

For all three children, the campaign takes its toll, especially for the losing candidates and their assistants. Viewers are left to decide if the experiment in democracy has been “successful” and what it might mean for democracy education in China. Please Vote For Me challenges those committed to China’s democratisation to consider the feasibility of, and processes involved in, its implementation.

“I highly recommend this film to anyone who has an interest in the future of democracy in China, or wants to have a better understanding of what it is like to grow up in China. I would also recommend this to teachers who want to show their students life in China, as it would provide material for dozens of discussions.” - Seeing Red In China

LEGACY

When Hilde Back sponsored a young, rural Kenyan student, she thought nothing of it. She certainly never expected to hear from him, but years later she does. Now a Harvard graduate and a Human Rights Lawyer for the United Nations, Chris Mburu decides to find the stranger that changed his life. Inspired by her generosity, he starts a scholarship program of his own and names it for his former benefactor.

The top students in Mukubu primary school are in the exact same situation as Chris once was. They are bright, but can’t afford to pay school fees. With the creation of Chris’ fund, these students have new hope. But the program is small;

how many will qualify for a scholarship?

Using a strong narrative, the film interweaves seemingly separate lives into a cohesive whole. With clarity and grace this inspiring documentary bears witness to the ripple effect a single action can create, and demonstrates that a small act can change the world.

TEACHING DIVIDED HISTORIES

THUR 22 NOV | 5PMTHE ENIGMA OF FRANK RYAN NERVE CENTRE CLC A sympathetic but searching portrait of Frand Ryan (1902-1944), IRA activist in Ireland, International Brigade Volunteer in Spain and Nazi collaborator in Berlin. Ryan enters a Faustian pact with a Nazi regime he believes will assist in forging a united Ireland. His collaboration is justified by the republican motto: “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.”

But the former radical and internationalist pays a heavy price for this pact. The film

raises important questions about the collaboration between the IRA and the Nazis in World War II. It opens up a long suppressed debate about Irish neutrality in that war. Drawing upon Ryan’s correspondence and using a rich mix of period archive combined with live action – with a striking portrayal of Frank Ryan by Dara Devaney - the film makers tell a story of tragic proportions and probes the enigma that was Frank Ryan.

The screening will be introduced by the Director Desmond Bell and followed by a Panel Discussion.
