The theme of this year’s Foyle Film Festival is ‘Secret Lives’. The festival education programme explores this theme through a series of screenings and workshops aimed at primary and post-primary schools and colleges.

The primary school programme approaches the theme through the magical and exciting world of action heroes and adventurers whose ordinary lives often mask their superhero alter egos – such as Superman and Wonder Woman. In a special screening of Jack And The Cuckoo-Clock Heart a little boy must hide his true emotions or risk breaking his makeshift heart.

Primary outreach workshops give pupils the opportunity to use fun and exciting ICT skills in the classroom in order to explore this year’s festival theme. While this year’s outreach film programme offers travel, adventure and important lessons about friendship, love, courage and heroism.

The post-primary programme delves into the real lives of individuals whose everyday behaviour provided no clues to a completely secret existence. Finding Vivian Maier is the fascinating story of a woman who worked as a nanny for over 40 years, while secretly making films, and taking thousands of photographs documenting her life and those around her. Her secret life was discovered at an auction after her death. Her work has been universally celebrated and has led to a renaissance in the popularity of street photography.

Night Will Fall blatantly exposes the denial by ordinaryGermans that they had any knowledge of the Concentration Camps. The purpose of the original film was to ensure

that the Holocaust could not be denied. Ironically, in the aftermath of the war, political expediency dictated that the incendiary footage be shelved as the Allies needed Germany on side against Russia. As a result, much of the archive film in Night Will Fall is being shown for the first time. Sally Angel, the producer of Night Will Fall, will introduce this screening.

The post-primary programme marks the ongoing Decade of Centenaries with a series of workshops from the Nerve Centre’s Creative Centenaries project. From digital storytelling to educational resources, Creative Centenaries brings a fresh approach to the study and memory of one of Ireland’s most defining periods. These workshops will offer creative tasks in digital design and audio production to explore key themes of enlistment during the First World War.

Testament Of Youth is the incredible true story of one young woman’s struggle to survive the horrors of war. Vera Brittain lost her brother, fiancé and two close friends in the First World War, and wrote ‘Testament Of Youth’ as a response to the horror and futility of war. More than eight decades later, it remains one of the most powerful and widely read war memoirs of all time. Vera Brittain’s beloved memoir is faithfully realised in this moving and timely adaptation.

Using comic books to explore Ireland’s past, students will get a chance to examine pivotal events of 1916, including the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme, and complete poster making or digital audio tasks based on what they’ve learned.

Designed by the Nerve Centre’s Creative Centenaries programme, which aims to bring fresh approaches to the events of 100 years ago, the vibrant comics offer an engaging glimpse into key events in Ireland’s history.

The Easter Rising is told from the point of view of Bangor woman Winifred Carney, personal secretary to James Connolly and one of the last people to leave the GPO during Easter week, while the Battle of the Somme story focuses on Lurgan born William McFadzean, one of the first people from Ulster to receive the Victoria Cross for bravery and who died on the opening day of battle.

The Nerve Centre’s FabLab is a fully kitted, high tech fabrication laboratory in which practically anything can be designed and prototyped using state-of-the-art machines, including 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC router, vinyl cutter and milling machine.

In this two and a half hour workshop participants will design their own hero/adventure inspired t-shirt.

Participants can use famous heroes or adventure characters – such as Superman, Batman, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, for inspiration, or use their imagination to invent their own unique character. Participants will then print and take away their own unique t-shirt.

The hell of the Holocaust rises again in this remarkable account from Sidney Bernstein, Britain’s army film unit commissioned producer. The documentary is a record of the Nazi death camps, using footage pouring in from the liberation of Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Auschwitz and elsewhere.

Alfred Hitchcock was employed as a supervising director. Yet the film was never completed: Bernstein was stonewalled by political authorities nervous of the growing Zionist movement and in need of Germany as a post-war anti-Soviet ally.

Director André Singer’s Night Will Fall charts the historical development of Bernstein’s work, combining extracts from the original film with other documentary footage from the period that provides context to the wider story.

But it’s the testimony that Singer records in interviews with the dozen or so witnesses from the time itself, survivors of the camps, as well as those who first discovered and then chronicled those terrible places, that speaks most powerfully. The final lines of Richard Crossman’s original script reveal the resonance of Singer’s title: “Unless the world learns the lessons these pictures teach, night will fall.”

More than eight decades later, it remains one of the most powerful and widely read war memoirs of all time.

2014 marks 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War when thousands of men from across Ireland enlisted in the army and played their part in the widespread conflict. Political issues played a role in the recruitment of some with politicians urging men to show their loyalty while others joined for a sense of adventure, a steady wage or the chance to defend other small nations.

Using digital media, students will explore recruitment methods used to encourage Irish men and women to sign-up and take part, gaining a deeper understanding of the role that Ireland played throughout the war. Utilising the skills and resources of the Nerve Centre’s award-winning Creative Centenaries project, students will explore the impact that Ireland had on the war and how the conflict shaped Ireland.

Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing). But Belle is not a film exclusively about either race or gender, but something much more than that. It’s a film about humans transcending labels and the sadness that comes when we are governed only by the labels awarded to us by hierarchy rather than meritocracy.

The Nerve Centre’s FabLab is a fully kitted, high tech fabrication laboratory in which practically anything can be designed and prototyped using state-of-the-art machines, including 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC router, vinyl cutter and milling machine.

In this two and a half hour workshop participants will design their own superhero inspired t-shirt. Participants

can use famous heroes or adventure characters – such as Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, for inspiration, or use their imagination to invent their own unique character. Participants will then print and take away their own unique t-shirt.

Teachers can book any of the following educational film packages to screen in the classroom on any date and time from Monday 17 to Friday 28 November. No need to book buses or cover for teachers, as the Foyle Film Festival will bring the film programme right into the classroom.
