A LegenDerry FinaleClipper Race Prize-giving & CelebrationWed 13th July • 7pm • Guildhall Square Seo Linn will headline an evening of music and dance which the public are invited to come along and be part of to officially welcome the Clipper Round the World Race to the city and celebrate the achievements of the winning teams for Race 12 from New York to Derry entitled ‘The LegenDerry Finale’.

This will be the first time that the crew prize giving event for the Clipper Race has been public facing and it promises to be a momentous occasion. Fingers crossed our home team Derry-Londonderry-Doire are placed in the top three for their homecoming race but regardless of race position there’s no doubt they’ll receive the biggest cheer of the evening when they take to the stage!

Seo Linn burst onto the Irish music scene a few years ago with a powerful sound that encapsulates a traditional sense of Irishness through the medium of contemporary, high octane, rhythmic music in what we can only describe as a treat for your ears.

With a YouTube following garnering 18 million views they are renowned for their unique take on Gaeilge versions of chart-topping hits. They are the official ambassadors of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016, during which they proudly translated the massive global hit, Thinking Out Loud for none other than Ed Sheeran to record.

One special moment promises to be when Seo Linn play their version of Avicii’s ‘Wake me Up’ which went viral for them on YouTube and is coincidently the team song for our own Team Derry-Londonderry –Doire. Expect a highlight moment of the festival and keep your eyes peeled for some surprises, anything could happen!

Remember you can support our home team with our #crewpurple by joining the party dressed in our team colour purple!

This event is being delivered in partnership with Derry City & Strabane District Council’s European Youth Capital 2019 bid.

In the evenings leading up to her departure, Sunniva and her exotic people will perform, in procession, through the festival as they prepare themselves for the journey ahead. See them, cheer them and wish them well...

The Riptide Movementplus support from Paul CaseyFri 15th July • Tickets: £5 available from www.foylemaritime.com

The Riptide Movement are Ireland’s newest musical export, boasting the kind of rabble-rousing, blue collar, rock ‘n’ roll that should see them become Ireland’s answer to Augustines and Frank Turner.

Having blown the Irish music scene wide open in 2014 with their Number One, gold-selling album ‘Getting Through’, a string of Top 10 singles and various sold-out headline tours, the four-piece are now setting their sights on worldwide success.

Seo Linn Wed 13th July • 8pmGuildhall Stage

This energetic, fun young band have taken the Irish music scene by storm and are guaranteed to deliver one of the highlight gigs of the festival. Their powerful original songs and unique take on Gaeilge versions of chart-topping hits has afforded them a YouTube audience of 18 million views.

Stiofán, Keith, Daithí, Kev, Cathal and Conor all hail from various parts of Ireland. They have brought together their musical talents to create a distinctive style that meshes the old and the new. Their sound encapsulates a traditional sense of Irishness through the medium of contemporary, high octane, rhythmic music in what we can only describe as a treat for your ears. This is definitely a band that you need to see live to believe the incredible energy that they bring to the stage.

Balkan Alien Sound Sat 16th JulyFestival Village

Balkan Alien Sound are a high octane, dance driven, folk fusion outfit that offer a mix of Irish, Klezmer, Gypsy and Balkan styles to create a distinctive and infectious music, setting them apart as world music trail blazers in Northern Ireland.

KílaSat 16th JulyFestival Village Kíla’s blend of Irish traditional music and world music with a modern rock sensibility was credited with breathing new life into contemporary Irish folk music.

The Booka Brass BandSat 16th JulyFestival Village

The Booka Brass Band have become something of an enigma. What started out as a group of young music students shyly addressing a bar full of revellers, has unforeseeably become an 8-piece band of professional entertainers and craftsmen, capable of

not just grabbing and holding the attention of thousands of fans in a festival tent or at any number of their sold out shows. Rarely anything but unorthodox.

Page 14: Foyle Maritime Festival Events Programme

Paul Casey Fri 15th July Ebrington

Irish songwriter, guitarist and singer Paul Casey is being talked of among Ireland’s new music followers as one to watch out for. He’s constantly in demand in his home country, performing for enthusiastic fans with a challenging near-daily schedule.

The hard work has paid off as his songwriting, guitar playing and distinctive voice are set to cause quite a stir on both sides of the Atlantic.

Four Men anda DogThurs 14th JulyFestival Village

Four Men & A Dog are true legends of Irish music. Their fiery sets are second to none. Each musician is recognised as one of the foremost on his instrument anywhere in traditional music - most notably fiddler Cathal Hayden and frontman Gino Lupari who is one of Irish music’s great characters - a true performer who engages and draws audiences into the show wherever the band play worldwide.

Lisa Hannigan Thurs 14th JulyFestival Village

Lisa Hannigan’s music has been compared to folk artists such as Nick Drake, but is not wary of delving straight into the eccentric impulses synonymous with musicians like Kate Bush. Her first solo album ‘Sea Sew’, debuted at No. 4 on the charts and garnered her nominations from the Meteor Music Award and Choice Music Prize.

More recently, her second album ‘Passenger’, was a critical and commercial feat for Hannigan, debuting at No.1 on the Irish Album Charts and No. 2 on the U.S. Top Heatseekers with tracks featuring in Hollywood blockbuster, ‘Gravity’.

Du Pont ‘Float Your Boat’DuPont is the title sponsor of the Foyle Maritime Festival 2016 and, in association with Footsteps Theatre Company, they have launched an outreach programme entitled, ‘DuPont Float Your Boat’ which is aimed at Key Stage 2 students across Northern Ireland.

As well as being one of Derry~Londonderry’s most significant employers, DuPont is also a huge advocate of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects in schools and the company has, for many years, rewarded some of the county’s brightest young minds via STEM-inspired secondary school initiatives.

Paul Kirkpatrick, Organisation Manager, DuPont, said: “We’re so pleased to be working with the Derry City & Strabane District Councils to deliver a fun, engaging and free education programme to primary school children from across Derry~Londonderry. As a company, we regularly reach out to schools, offering prizes for STEM related tasks as well as

creating our own competitions, so we are constantly engaging with young minds and hopefully inspiring them to take more of an interest in engineering.”

DuPont make Kevlar® which is extraordinarily strong, lightweight and on an equal-weight basis, five times stronger than steel. It is best known for its use in protective garments but it can also be found in ships’ hulls, skateboards and tyres.

Paul continued: “There is a skills shortage in the engineering sector in the region so we are committed to educating young people about the many benefits a job in this sector can bring including great rewards and a set of skills that will always be in demand.”

For additional information about DuPont and its commitment to inclusive innovation, please visit dupont.com.

Pupils from the Good Shepherd Primary School join (l to r) Robert Forshaw of Footsteps, Mayor of Derry City & Strabane District Council, Elisha McCallion, Paul Kirkpatrick from DuPont and Margaret Edwards from Derry City & Strabane District Council.
