Students and teachers are all looking forward to their well-earned holiday, after a great semester of learning, caring and sharing. We have tried a few new things this year, and had great feedback from parents and students. We will continue to cooperate with our P&C, Student Parliament, staff team and our community so that Tanilba Bay goes from strength to strength. Tomorrow looks like being one of those gorgeous Tanilba Bay days when our community comes together to enjoy a day of Sport. Ms Sawyer and I look forward to seeing you at our Athletics Carnival tomorrow. Please come over and say hello. BIG WEEK AHEAD Next week will be an extremely busy one with our NAIDOC celebrations on Thursday July 4. We will be having a Welcome to Country with the whole school and a dance performance by some of our students at 9:30, followed by class based activities throughout the day. Semester 1 reports are also going home on Thursday July 4. I would like to thanks all the teachers for the large amount of time and effort that goes into preparing each and every report. They demonstrate the depth of knowledge to which every child in our school is known, valued and cared for. Please take the time to read these with your child and celebrate their growth and successes from the first half of the year. Parent/Teacher interviews will be held in Week 4 of next term. More information will go home at the beginning of Term 3.

Almost there!

BIG WEEK AHEAD

Next week will be an extremely busy one with our NAIDOC celebrations on Thursday July 4.

H Block Toilets

At the start of this week, there was a drainage overflow in our H Block (senior) toilets. Unfortunately, the clean-up following the urgent maintenance needed has not yet been completed. Our first concern is always student safety, so we chose to leave those toilets closed until a comprehensive clean-up could be completed. We’ve been working hard with the Department of Education’s Asset Management Team to get this sorted and expect this work to be completed ready for next week.

Too sick for school?

One of the questions we get from parents from time to time is whether a child is too sick to come to school. NSW Health has produced some advice which can be found at the link below.

Mr Tim Harris Deputy Principal

Stage 2

This term we have been focusing on persuasive texts. The students have been working on their sentence structure, vocabulary and skills of creative persuasion. Here is an outstanding snippet of some independent writing by Elise Gentle:

Books are better than Prodigy

When where you last physically bored out of your brain and sick of that constant tappity tap of your computer? Well do I have the solution for you! The very thing you were taught about in kindergarten and lives on your bedroom shelf….YES a BOOK!

In a book you can find endless adventures, romance, fun and you can visit anywhere from Rapunzel’s tower to a battle field in Lorna Doone. A book is a world of adventure that you can hold in your hand and enter and exit when you wish. Why would you want to waste your eye sight on a silly screen time game and not only that, a game like prodigy is almost completely one sided. Books have many sides. …….

Just a reminder that the Stage 2 Spelling Bee final will take place in the Hall on 2 July at 9.30am. If you child is a finalist, you would have already received a note from Mr McLean.

Public Speaking Competition

Public speaking forms part of the NSW English Curriculum. As part of our school’s public speaking program, Tanilba Bay Public School participate in the Hunter Inter-School Public Speaking Competition. Students are all to select a topic of their choice for their speech and present it to the class in Week 10.

Notes went home last week with some topic ideas. Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 speeches are 1-2 minutes, Stage 2 speeches are 2-3 minutes and Stage 3 speeches are 3 – 3 ½ minutes. Stage finals will be held in Week 2 of Term 3. Stage finalists will then be able to represent our school at the Hunter Inter-schools Public Speaking Competition in Term 3.

If you have any questions regarding the competition, please see your child’s classroom teacher.
