2017 Term 1 Week 8

Deputy Principal’s Message Can you Hear the Music?

You may have may noticed some changes to our school bell system this week. We are adding music to the end of the bells signalling students to move to class. The expectation is that students will be at their classrooms by the end of the music. We will be monitoring how long the music needs to be played for this system to work efficiently and new songs will be added from time to time.

Cooperative Learning Structures

Have you been hearing about ‘Think-Pair-Share’ or ‘Rally Robin” activities at home? Over the last few weeks, the staff has been staying back at school to engage in professional learning about cooperative learning structures. All classes are engaging in trialling a number of new activities to evaluate their effectiveness in boosting student engagement, interaction and thinking skills. We look forward to engaging in further staff sessions early next term and evaluating this exciting learning journey.

Road Safety Reminder

We have received some alarming reports of near misses involving students behaving dangerously while waiting for their buses to in the morning. This has included students leaving their bags at the bus stop and then trying to race the bus from a distance to their designated stop resulting in a number of near misses. Teachers have also been monitoring the students coming to and from school via the back gate and have had to speak to many students about crossing the road without looking in front of cars. Teachers have been stressing the importance of road safety in class and I ask that you also speak to your

children at home about safe travel to and from school whether it be by bus, bike/scooter or walking.

On time arrival

A reminder to all students and parents that all classes start at 9:05am each day. All class rolls are marked promptly after the arrival of the last bus in the morning and submitted electronically by the class teacher. The roll is locked after being submitted by the class teacher. Any student who reports to class or school after this must report to the office with an adult to have their name marked off the class roll. Why so strict? The school is responsible for ensuring the safety of all students. As part of our WHS requirements, we must know who is in each class at any point in time. If the school has to be locked down, or an emergency situation arises, we must be able to account for all students and adults on the premises. Students who are constantly late also miss out on valuable instructions about the day, specific activities and changes to routine. Parents and carers are asked to allow enough time in the morning to get to school on time. “Sleeping in, no parks, just running late” must be entered onto our computer as “unjustified”. The school rolls are regularly checked by myself and the Home School Liaison Officer, who will request interviews with families from time to time. Learning starts from the morning bell and regular lateness can impact on students’ learning opportunities. Thank you to the vast majority of parents who are always vigilant and ensure their children arrive on time.

Stage 2 News The last two weeks have been jam-packed with fun and educational activities for Stage 2 students. The children have had great fun bringing in materials to construct our very own structures out of household items as a part of their Science unit. All the students had a brilliant time designing and building their houses! A quick reminder to all students – even on cloudy days it’s very easy to get sunburnt. For this reason it is required that all students have a hat on during sport. Please remember to bring one on Monday afternoons! Even though the camp is almost two terms away, the deposit for the excursion ($50) is due by Friday the 28th of April, along with the permission note. Have a chat with our friendly office staff to organise payment methods. On Friday the 17th of March the school will be holding a fundraiser supporting the Tilligerry Lion Club’s “Lime Day”. It is a mufti day and children are asked to wear green, providing a gold coin donation to raise money for Jade Morgan, who is seeking treatment overseas for Lyme Disease.

Not long until the end of the term now, hang in there! Have a fantastic weekend. Stage 2 Teachers

Stage Three What a few busy weeks it has been in Stage Three recently. We have been learning about how living things adapt in our Science topic ‘Living Things’. The students love being able to look at things under a microscope to see how organisms are formed. We are all preparing for NAPLAN by working on our persuasive argument techniques and we have been writing amazing narratives based around a topic. We are very enthusiastic about our new grammar program ‘B.O.L.T.S’. It’s such a fun interactive way for students to learn the fundamentals of grammar. This week’s topic was correct sentence structure. Please remember it is very important for all students to have a hat and a water bottle at school each day. Don’t forget some healthy fruit or a veggie snack for Crunch & Sip! Tanilba Bay Public School is currently in the progress of rejuvenating home readers for all students K-6. Stage 3 will begin home reading this week by utilising quality texts from personal home collections and/or by accessing the library for chapter books. Once a surplus supply of texts have been added to the home reading collection at TBPS, Stage 3 students will be able to select from a large variety of texts to take home as home readers.

Please remember to return Cross Country note back to your teacher as soon as possible. The Cross Country will be held on the 31st of March 2017. Regards, The Stage Three Teachers ANZAC Day The Tilligerry RSL Sub-Branch has invited our students to attend the ANZAC Day march and wreath laying ceremony to be held on Tuesday 25 April, 2017. ANZAC Day is a day of respect in Australia and New Zealand as we remember all those who lost their lives fighting for freedom and those who continue to protect our democracy. At Tanilba Bay Public School we believe that this significant event should be supported by our school community. We encourage our students to be involved in the march to show respect and to support our school commitment. In particular, our Parliamentarian leaders and class representatives are asked to participate on the day. We understand that there are students who attend the march as part of other community commitments. Students marching under our school banner will be required to assemble at the entry to Tanilba Bay dressed in full school uniform at 9.15am. The march will proceed to the Tilligerry RSL where a formal service and wreath laying ceremony will take place at 10am. We value your children’s participation and look forward to seeing many of our students proudly wearing their uniform and paying respect to our Diggers.

WELCOME This year our Parliament Ministers will be writing a column in the newsletter called “Message from the Ministers”. Whether it is about sport, health, special events, school transport or exciting things happening around the school you will hear it from us. Keep a look out for it every fortnight!

News from the Scripture Teachers -2017. Once again Scripture lessons are well underway at Tanilba Bay Public School. At the end of 2016 Mrs Nancarrow left as she was leaving the district. Pastor David and Gail Trounce have rejoined the team after twelve months living in Scotland. Mrs Jean Wark has also come back to replace Mrs Champness who will be absent for this term. We use “Godspace” material which is published by the Baptist Union of NSW and approved for use by the local ministers. All the teachers on the SRE team are authorised by their local churches. Our lessons explore Christian scriptures, core Christian beliefs and examine how the teachings of Jesus call us to make good life choices in our relationships. This year our Combined Scripture Assemblies will be held on Wednesdays 28th June and 29th

November. Parents and friends are very welcome to join us for these occasions. If you have any questions or comments regarding Scripture lessons at Tanilba Bay please contact me as below. I have also listed the local churches with a contact person and phone number. The churches have regular services and also programmes for school age children and younger. Book Worm Corner

Welcome back everyone to what is going to be another amazing year at Tanilba Bay Public School!

In library we have already made a busy and exciting start. Our kindergarten students have taken to borrowing like ducks to water and have all enjoyed their library lessons and stories.

In Years One to Four, students are learning about different styles of poetry such as ‘nonsense rhymes’ and ‘Diamante poems’. We have had some very creative poems written such as 4B’s Diamante poem titled ‘Monsters’.

Monsters

Hairy, ugly

Attacking, scaring, laughing

Ghosts, cyborg, vampires, zombies

Running, gnashing, snoring

Dirty, stinky

Creatures

Written by 4B

In Years Five and Six the students are studying the new history unit ‘Australia as a Nation’. Marli from 5/6S brought into school a wonderful painting by her uncle which depicts the Aboriginal flag and snake painted using the traditional dot style of painting. Thank you so much Marli for sharing this special piece of family history.

Borrowing

Welcome to our gorgeous new Kindergarten students. All Kinder students have already enjoyed a few lessons in library, sharing books and borrowing. At Tanilba Bay Public School we encourage borrowing and reading and sharing of books. To borrow, your child simply needs to bring a library bag with them to school. This can be a bought library bag, shopping bag, pillow case, environmental bag, anything really that will protect a book. Please ensure your child has their name and class written clearly on the bag.

Students in K – 2 are encouraged to borrow and return on a weekly basis. As students grow older and are reading lengthier books they are able to borrow for longer periods of time. Overdues At school we try to encourage regular borrowing and enjoyment of books. Every term, overdue notices are sent out as a reminder for students to return their books on time. More often than not other students are waiting to borrow these particular books. From time to time however, books are sometimes mistakenly placed back on shelves without being returned or a book is misplaced in the classroom. In the event of this occurring, simply write an explanation on the back of the overdue notice and send in with your child. Alternatively, ring our school and ask to speak to me (Mrs Carlson), email, or you are more than welcome to come and visit me in the library. Premier’s Reading Challenge 2017 The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure for students and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, read more and to read more widely.

Page 6: Ph: 49824762 Fax: 49823112 Email: tanilbabay -p.school@det ...€¦ · Ph: 49824762 Fax: 49823112 Email: tanilbabay -p.school@det.nsw.edu.au Online: 2017 Term 1 Week 8 . Deputy Principal’s

Notes will go home this week to all students who wish to participate in this year’s challenge. All Kindergarten students will receive a note. The 2017 Premier's Reading Challenge will open on the 7th March 2017. It closes on the 25th August for students. Students are able to start reading now and can fill out their reading record at a later date. To make it easier for parents this year, our school library system, Oliver, records the books your child borrows. Students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 who participate in the challenge, will record their own books on the Premier’s Reading Challenge site themselves in library lessons. Parents will not have to do this at home. I will send a list home with the students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 when they have read their required amount of books and parents can add the titles online at home. Any parent or family without internet access simply contact me and I will arrange for it to be entered at school. Library Monitors Students in year 5 were given the opportunity to complete a small library monitor test on Friday to see if they were eligible to become a library monitor. What fantastic students we have at Tanilba Bay Public School. All students who participated did extremely well. I am proud to announce our library monitors for 2017 are: Peter, Isaac, Shaniya, Ciana, Ahlyia, Elleena, Indianna, Alexis, Jessica, Natalie, Kristina, Chelsea, Holly, Kate, Layla, Stephanie, Emily, Tahlia, Rassie, Larah-Kate, Lilly, Olivia, Jessica, Ciana and Ahlyia. These library monitors will receive their badges next term on a whole school assembly, to be advised. Latest Books!! Beautiful books are published all the time and they are wonderful sources of inspiration! Here are some amazing new books that have just arrived in our library. Zac Power by H.I.Larry, An Australian set of books which follow Zac Power on his adventures in his Government Investigation bureau. Mollie and Mae by Danny Parker and Freya Blackwood, a beautiful story about friendship and the importance of overcoming obstacles.

Oliver Library In our school we now have ‘Oliver Library’. All students have access to Oliver at school and at home. Within Oliver is the students’ library centre called ‘Orbit’. This is where the students can create an avatar, personalise their backgrounds, search for library books, and write book reviews for our library. All the students need to do is to go onto Internet Explorer and in Google, type in: https://sso.det.nsw.edu.au/sso/UI/Login Log in with their students portal username and password (the one they use to log onto the computers at school) and click on the ‘Oliver Library’ and then ‘Orbit’. A wonderful start to the term, happy reading, Mrs Carlson Teacher Librarian
