TUESDAY 29 November 2011

National MP Nick Smith has won the Nelson seat for the sixth time as Nel-son voted for National in greater numbers, af-ter winning the party vote for the first time in 2008. “It’s a tremen-dous result, and the best ever result for the National party in Nelson,” says Nick. After only just winning the par-ty vote for Nelson in 2008 from Labour, Nick says the most satisfying aspect was the bigger shift in 2011. “It was particularly exciting to see the big switch in the party vote. Our vote went up and Labour’s plum-meted,” he says.

Although the change in party vote didn’t transfer into a percentage increase over Labour-list MP Maryan Street. “It’s pretty

much in line. It looks like, when you count the specials in, my majority at the last election was eight thousand and this elec-tion looks like it’s going to be set around seven thousand,” says Nick.

Nick says the loyalty that Nelsonians have shown is “hugely” pleasing. “You’ve just got such a clear man-date when you’ve got more than 50 per cent of the vote, and it means you can speak very solidly for the community,” he says.

of conclusions and she ran to the me-dia, who then didn’t check their facts.”She says the man was not pushed over or man-handled in anyway or by any-body. “A police volunteer was on the scene quickly and we have since spoken with his caregivers, they are completely sat-isfied there has been no attack on him whatsoever. His caregivers advised this is not the first time this has happened,” she says. She says it is disappointing that unsub-stantiated and incorrect information has been published and it has had a negative impact on the community. Victory’s community constable, Reu-ben McCormack says the community is very protective of its residents with special needs.“To suggest people with special needs are being bullied on the streets of Vic-tory is totally wrong. Even the young people around here are very protective of them.”

Another story, printed on Saturday, said a police car left the scene while the man was lying on the ground. Barbara says the Victory staff member told her the community constable had left the area about 10 minutes prior to the in-cident happening. “I think anyone in that community would know Reuben would not step around a man in need and drive off,” she says.Nelson Mail editor Paul McIntyre says he felt his newspaper went through all the right channels to make sure the story was accurate. “We went through the checks we would normally do. When we first contacted police there was nothing on file, we contacted the community con-stable who wasn’t available. The health board staff had reported the incident to police. “A lot of the story was around the reac-tion of the woman who came forward and it wasn’t until late Friday night that we had anything vaguely suggesting that it was a fictitious attack.”

“I voted, because I find the whole idea of it exciting. There is a lot of history around it, and if you don’t you’re just laugh-ing at it.”

Calvin Smith, Nelson.

“I couldn’t get there, I was too busy working. It was up to me to get there, I had no time.”

“Yes I did, because I think it’s important. I think no one knew who to vote for to be quite honest.”

After two court cases for lack of consultation and another petition currently doing the rounds, Nelson City Council is rushing to change the way it does business.Mayor Aldo Miccio announced his “five point plan” for better governance after the efficient but alienating current system left council red-faced over some of its decisions.Aldo says the new system will put coun-cillors back in charge of the consultation and planning process and give ratepayers an opportunity to speak to councillors in a public forum before any decisions are finalised. That structure may have prevented High Court losses for the Montgomery Sq up-grade and its gaming machine policy. Re-cently, its decision to create a Maori ward within council sparked outrage in certain quarters and prompted a petition to send the is-sue to a referendum.Aldo says the changes will engage ratepayers and make the decision making process easier for councillors because they will have more infor-mation.“In light of recent events, it’s important we take that [control] back.“You wouldn’t run your company like this be-cause it isn’t the most efficient process but we are a community organisation and we don’t just have a single profit motive,” he says. The plan includes increased oversight of legal is-

sues, matters and consultation as well as a new meeting process that will allow for greater com-munity engagement throughout the decision making process. Portfolio holders will be em-powered with information on the staff work plan so they are aware of items in advance of council meetings.“Although the long term plan is and must be our top priority at the moment, we will be looking

at the proposal as quickly as possible. It’s important that the community knows we are listening and addressing their con-cerns, and today I can tell you that we are committed as a council to doing just that.“We are not working in isolation, how-ever. The council has full confidence in its chief executive and staff. [CEO] Keith Marshall is dedicated to achieving these priorities.”The plan was introduced to council last week. It was agreed at the meeting that a

timeline for further review and implementation be brought back to council on December 15.Aldo says reversing the changes made in the last council term is necessary to move forward with-out coming across another court case.“The intent [in the last term] was to make the process more efficient and get stuff done, but while we were trying to make things more effec-tive the community has been left behind. That’s why we need to change what we are doing and make sure their voice is heard loud and clear by councillors making the decisions.”

From ‘hanger’ to first classThe final stage of an upgrade to Nel-son’s iconic Trafalgar Centre will go ahead next year, announced Nelson City Council last week. The centre, affectionatly known as the “hanger” by local basketball fans, may need to drop the name though, with plans showing a modern $7 million upgrade of the northern end of the centre.Three years ago the southern end was redeveloped. The new development will compliment that and will bring it into the 21st century says council.Councillors decided to move ahead with the upgrade plans after they were included in the draft annual plan this year. Staff have been instructed to car-ry out a further round of consultation with the groups who currently use the Trafalgar Centre and with the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce before

preparing detailed plans. The revised plans for the multi use events centre will then be reported back to council, along with cost esti-mates. The proposed upgrade includes the re-placement of the kitchen and toilets, a more accessible entrance, an upgrade of the foyer and office, tiered seating to the north end of the stadium and exhi-bition and convention space. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the decision is a good move for the city.“This is an important and busy facility for Nelson. The Northern end upgrade will be the last stage in its redevelop-ment and offers the opportunity to make the Trafalgar Centre more ver-satile and attractive for an even wider range of events.”Plans for the upgrade have been pre-pared by Arthouse Architecture.

The Government’s announcement to introduce a new way of funding independent research institutions is a huge boost for Nelson’s Cawthron Institute, says Nelson MP Nick Smith.Cawthron has been historically dis-advantaged by not being eligible for capability funding like Crown Re-search Institutes. The Government’s announcement, gazetted last week, that independ-ent research organisations like Caw-thron will be eligible for the same capability funding, is a boost worth millions of dollars a year to the Caw-thron, says Nick.“This issue was raised by the Caw-thron Institute last year with the Minister of Science and Innovation Wayne Mapp and Prime Minister John Key during his recent visit. “The new policy from the Ministry of Science and Innovation enables independent research institutions

from July 1 next year to receive this new funding stream that is currently available to the ten Crown Research Institutions.“This is great news for Nelson’s Caw-thron Institute. It puts them on the same funding footing as the Govern-ment’s own research institutes which is appropriate given its public-good purpose and community ownership. It gives the institute greater funding security and enables it to compete for research contracts on an equal footing,” he says. The Government has set aside $6 million to enable this new capabil-ity funding. Research is critical to Nelson’s and New Zealand’s long-term growth prospects and this announcement shows the Govern-ment’s commitment to science and innovation, he says The Cawthron Institute did not want to comment until it had time to properly study the decision.

NEWS IN BRIEFSTINKY SITUATION: The contractor tasked with designing, building and operating the upgraded facility at the Nelson Waste Water Treatment Plant (NWWTP) will quit the role next month. United Group Limited (UGL) says it will cease operations on December 21, and Nelson City Council has appointed NEL-MAC to take over the operations from that date. Council’s executive manager of network Services Alec Louverdis, says council remains frustrated at the on-going odour issues and whilst council and UGL remain in discus-sions, both parties will now enter a formal process of conflict resolution. At this stage it remains too early to say how long this will take or what this might entail, he says.

MOVEMBER: Movember comes to an end tomorrow and hundreds of Nelson men have been sporting more facial hair than normal, including one of the city’s favourite son’s. Jer-emy Brockie is donating one of his signed All White shirts to raise money for the cause. For more information visit http://au.movember.com/mospace/1908972/.

The Tahunanui School community swimming pool will be officially opened at 12noon today. The official opening follows a three year process, and bucks a national trend that has seen many schools throughout New Zealand close their swimming pools.Tahunanui School principal Paul Drummond says the whole project has been community orientated and the pool wouldn’t be a reality without everyone’s support in rais-ing the $400,000 needed to fund the complex. The new swimming pool is much

bigger than the previous one, at 20 x 8 metres, and also contains an en-closed toddler’s area. It has a slop-ing floor from width to width. The original pool had been in place for more than 65 years.“We’re thrilled. It’s been three years in the making and you never quite envisage what it’s going to be like, but this has really surpassed all our expectations. It’s a fabulous facili-ty,” says Paul. “This has brought the whole wider community together.”Anyone wishing to become a key holder for the summer can contact the school directly.

Over 350,000 volunteer hours were celebrated in Nelson this weekend as Coastguard New Zea-land held a three-day end of year function at various venues around the city. Around three-hundred people from 71 units around the country descended upon the region

for the awards evening and the traditional Coast-guard tug-of-war event.“Nelson has been an absolutely fantastic venue,” says Bruce Reid, chief executive officer who was based at the Rutherford Hotel. “The hospitality here for our volunteers has been absolutely in-

credible. Wives and partners have spent way too much money in your local economy,” he laughs. The festivities got off to a strenuous start at Founders Park as teams from four regions continued a traditional tug-of-war compe-tition that had its origins in Nelson in the early 1990’s. “It’s an annual event that started here in Nelson through one of our life mem-bers Harold Mason,” Bruce recalls. It turns out that Harold, of Nelson, was the “instigator” of the first ever Coastguard tug-of-war.The fun, but hotly contested, event was tak-en out by the Northern region this year, and it seems the runners-up got off lightly com-pared to when Harold was around. “The first challenge was between Coastguard Nelson and Coastguard Wellington, but they were more adventurous because they did it over a swimming pool and everybody ended up in the water,” says Bruce. The awards evening was held at the WOW Museum with Doug Griffin of the West Coast taking home Volunteer of the Year. “What a magnificent venue that is, it was a great place to celebrate the achievements of our volunteers,” says Bruce. The achievements include bringing back over 7000 New Zealanders back safely from threatening situations over a total of 3200 incidents, in a “pretty busy year” for the Na-tional team.

Winning the Service Excellence Award at the Nelson Tasman Business Awards is a mighty fine achievement, but when you consider BlueBerryIT services the frequently ‘challenging’ Information Technology industry, the achievement gains another edge.“We said at the start of the night, if there was one award we wanted, it was the service award and we are absolutely knocked out about receiving it,” says Paul Lamb, managing director of BlueBerryIT.Paul, Jeroen and Richard started BlueBerryIT just over three years ago with a deliberate focus on customer service. “It was our idea to build this business around excellence in customer service,” says Paul. “There’s a lot of IT companies out there but the vast majority don’t do it how we do it,” he says referring to the high quality of work, great value and now recognised excellence in customer service. When speaking with Paul about what sets BlueBerryIT apart from the rest, the response is emphatic: “We have a single-minded devotion to the customer, because without the customer we wouldn’t have a business,” says Paul. “This is what this award is about – It’s a great team effort” The tribute gained at the Business Awards shows the values BlueBerryIT stands for are not just talked about but are delivered. Perhaps even more of an endorsement is the success of the business itself. “A lot of the growth we have achieved in our business

has come through referrals from our customer base,” says Paul. “Happy customers are happy to refer.” That’s all the more impressive when you consider that BlueBerryIT enjoys over 99 per cent customer retention. You don’t get that kind of customer loyalty with smoke and mirrors.Paul openly acknowledges that traditionally a significant proportion of the IT business is a “frustrating issues” or “problems” business – fixing broken stuff. However BlueBerryIT are changing that: “Things can still go wrong of course, and when they do we fix them but we are far more focussed on making sure our customers systems and solutions are robust and reliable from the outset,” says Paul “the outcome is our customers spend less time worrying about their IT and more time working on their business” Excellent customer service and good old fashioned common sense – sounds like the perfect combination, worthy of an award or two you might say.

Nelson jeweller finds the key to honour minersNelson jeweller, Glen James is a for-mer Coaster, he was born there and grew up there. So he knows more than most that pain the region was feeling after the Pike River Mine tragedy just over a year ago.Like most New Zealanders he want-ed to help but didn’t know how. Then it hit him, do what he does best. Glen, the only jeweller in the country that makes custom-made 3D key chains and pendants from photographs, has since made key

chains with the face of each of the 29 dead miners, using advanced computer technology and his own sharp eye, to give to the families of the miners. “I wanted to do some-thing from the heart and something they could have forever. We have a lot of demand for these from all over New Zealand, so it seemed right to donate them to the family’s and do our bit.”The work to make the key chains took Glen and Gemma around 100

hours. Glen says it’s nice to be able to feel like you’re doing something.“I see people come in here to buy these for a recently deceased friend or family member and it can get quite emotional because they are re-ally life-like so I thought this would be a good way to honour them.”Glen says he’s really happy with how they turned out. “Hopefully it will put a smile on their faces and they will have something to remember them forever.”

Founders Park will be a paradise for Christmas lovers this Sunday with the second annual toy fair coinciding with the Santa Parade. The Founders Toy Fair will be held on the Sunday De-cember 4 and run alongside the Santa Parade Carnival, kicking off at 2pm. Stoke/Tahunanui Rotary Club elves have been hard at work making and fixing wooden toys for the fundraiser and quality pre-loved toys are arriving daily at Founders Heritage Park and Summit Real Estate Offices, to be sold back to the community at bargain prices just in time for Christmas.More donations of new or pre-loved toys are still wel-come. Please drop them off at Summit Real Estate offices in Nelson, Richmond or Motueka, or at Founders Herit-age Park, say organisers. The Toy Fair is a joint initiative between Founders Herit-age Park and the Stoke/Tahunanui Rotary Club. All funds raised will go towards Nelson community pro-jects, including projects within Founders Heritage Park, a Nelson City Council facility. Mike Fox of Stoke/Tahunanui Rotary Club says its mem-bers have worked hard on a few surprises for this year’s fair. “Last year’s fundraising efforts were spent on youth pro-jects in our region, including funding a Nayland College student to participate in the ‘Matched Twin Exchange programme’, where the student is matched up with a stu-dent of a similar age and the same gender and they swap families and schools for a term,” he says.Full of Christmas spirit, Maria Anderson facility man-ager says, “I hope the Toy Fair and Santa Carnival is a great success next Sunday, it is always fun to work closely with the members of the Stoke/ Tahunanui Rotary Club on this project.”

When Addo Mulders Snr was 14 years-old he watched as ten Jews from his small Dutch village were sent away to concentration camps. Sixty five years on, standing in the middle of the Anne Frank exhibition at the Nelson Provincial Museum, he carries a book with their faces and weeps at the thought of them not living the life he has enjoyed. Addo has lived in Nelson for 60 years but is proud of his Dutch heritage and says history, in this case, must never repeat. He says all Nel-sonians should make their way to the Museum to visit the exhibition before it leaves town next week. The Anne Frank exhibition has been touring New Zealand Museums’ for almost two years. The story represents the many Jews in the Hol-ocaust. The Franks spent two years in hiding during WWII in the secret annex at the rear of

an office building. Anne’s diary became very fa-mous, tracking their life through the war, right through to their betrayal that led to concentra-tion camps and eventually death. Only the fa-ther, Otto, survived. The wildly popular book Anne Frank Diary, has been read by millions all over the world and Addo says the exhibition follows her life, with that of the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands. The exhibition is also accompanied by two 30-minute films that tell those stories. Addo says Anne’s story needs to live on. “The bad things the German’s did cannot happen again and peo-ple should come and look at what Anne Frank had to put up with.”The exhibition runs until next Tuesday, Decem-ber 6. On a three year National tour, the Anne Frank travelling exhibition from the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, has been telling Frank’s story through family photos and excerpts from her diary, to thousands of New Zealanders.

‘We must never forget’

Addo Mulders Snr was a boy in rural Holland when Anne Frank was hiding from Nazi’s in Am-sterdam. Her story, via her diary, is now world famous and an exhibition into her life is now at the Nelson Provincial Musuem, which Addo encourages people to visit. Photo: Andrew Board.

Passion for gardeningNelson kindergarten teacher up for national award

Nelson’s Gardener of the Year nominee Anthea Kershaw, who works at Nelson South Kindergarten, helps Cody Satherley water the miniature grasses last week. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Recently awarded the title of Nelson Gar-dener of the year for over 35 years work in Kindergartens around the Nelson and Tas-man regions, Anthea Kershaw needs your vote for the national title.Wendy Logan of the Nelson District Kin-dergarten Association says the outstanding contribution Anthea has made to garden-ing with children continually since 1976 deserves to be recognised given that Anthea was a trail-blazer in the green education field. “Anthea was into recycling and sus-tainable gardening long before it was a pop-ular trend,” says Wendy.Nelson South, Greenwood and Birchwood Kindergartens are blooming examples of Anthea’s tireless work. Vegetables, fruit trees, nut, flowers and garden sheds made out of recycled plastic bottles are testament to that. Not to mention the countless chil-dren that may have picked up an apprecia-tion for growables. “I’ve taught children of children, they are all scattered around, so I think some must have,” says Anthea. However the humble green thumb defers a lot of the credit to the efforts of staff and parent helpers. “Everyone helps out in the gardens, it’s not just me” says Anthea. But if you speak to the other staff, they say Anthea provides the leadership, enthusiasm

and knowledge. “We are all really proud of Anthea, and the amazing effort she puts in,” says teacher Sandie Burn. The Kindergarten Association nominated Anthea for the national award. After picking up the regional title Anthea thinks its “nice to be recognised” although just as quickly she begins to talk about the qualities of those that support her. “Wendy Logan is a fantastic gardener herself, and the Kindergarten Association is very supportive of everyone developing gardens and being sustainable,” she says.Anthea says that compared to 30 years ago today’s children have to go out and seek that connection with nature. “It’s coming back to growing gardens, more people are putting gardens in because it’s exciting and achiev-able,” says Anthea. “It’s all for the children and they can learn so much from it.”Green spaces, gardening and sustainability are a great tool for education and there are many champions of the field emerging in organisations around the region, but here we have the opportunity to help reward one of the true pioneers. If you wish to sup-port Anthea and Nelson’s kindergartens you can vote by going to www.nzgardener.co.nz and follow the prompts. Voting closes on Wednesday, so get in quick.

It will soon be a sea of sound and colour on Nel-son streets, as hundreds of motorcyclists take to the roads of Nelson on Saturday 3 December for the annual Ulysses Nelson Toy Run. Celebrating its 26th year of collection, motorcy-clists from all over the top of the south and the West Coast are being asked to decorate them-selves and their machines. The event consistently attracts motorbikes and scooters of all sizes decorated and adorned with various gifts for distribution to the region’s chil-dren by the local branch of the Salvation Army.Branch coordinator Lorraine Lindsay says it’s not only Nelson riders who support the event,

but also motorcyclists from Marlborough, the West Coast and Christchurch travel here to take part. “The aim of the ride is to give gifts to the needy, and the Salvation Army follows the convoy of bikes to collect toys from people on the roadside. There is always a large turnout of bikes and spectators line the streets to watch and support the appeal. It’s a wonderful community spirit” Lorraine says.Riders will assemble at Papps car park in Cam-bridge St, Richmond at 10am, with the convoy leaving an hour later. The motorcycles will make their way into Nelson, via Stoke and Trafalgar St, ending at the car park of the Trafalgar Centre.

White Ribbon riders get tough on violenceJoe Puketapu on his bike as other supporters take part in the campaign to end violence against women. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

White Ribbon is a campaign led by men who condemn violence against women and take action, say organisers. As part of the National Day held last Fri-day, Nelson held a rally where men wear-ing black tops and white ribbons filled the Church Steps to show their support for the cause. The White Ribbon Riders took part in an

eight day White Ribbon ride around both Islands led by the Super Māori Fullas, the Patriots Defence Force Motorcycle Club, and other supporters on bikes. “Using bikes and riders is a chance to show that men can be tough against family violence,” says Jolene Salmond of Te Rito Network.A giant ribbon pledge was also signed by hundreds of people which started off at

Whakatu Marae, went to the networking hui and ended up on Trafalgar St. Jolene says the effort of the guys reminds all of us that family violence is not OK, and there is a focus on what friends and whanau can do to help people living in violent situa-tions. “There are lots of services to get help, but if people see violence the best thing is to go to the police,” she says.

A regular Richmond family spending an extraordinary three months in Turkey have told their story in a book released this month.Matt Watson, his wife Rach and three kids; Holly, 6, Toby, 5, and Bella, 2, lived in a cave, killed scorpions in their sleep and saved a drowning swimmer, amongst many unusu-al experiences during their three month jour-ney titled Hot Sun and Scorpions.Matt decided to take the family to Turkey to give his children a new cultural experience. “I didn’t want the world to revolve around the five kilometer radius that we live in when you go to the shops and the schools,” he says.He set out with the intention to write the book prior to the trip, and started writing a travel blog as an early test. “It was through the amount of people that asked Rach and I about the trip. It was either ‘why the hell are you doing this, are you mad?’ or ‘It must have been an amazing time what was it like?’”This was the first book he had published and he found it “far more difficult” than he anticipated. Writing a book is a common occurrence in many people’s bucket list, but Matt says he is more of a “marathon guy” when it came to life goals, and

never excepted to see his name on the cover of a book. “I love my sports so having the practical side of sitting down and writing was a bit of a challenge. But it was very rewarding to get it done and see it finished.” Both Paper Plus stores in Nelson and Richmond will be stocking Hot Sun and Scorpions as well as Page and Blackmore, Fresh Choice and many more leading retailers.

TUESDAY 29 November 2011

Hello again and what a busy time I have had in the last two weeks. I promise that this will not turn into a baby update ses-sion but I have never spent such a lovely time in ages. I forgot how small they re-ally are when born so early and I think that all the nurses in the neo -natal unit in Christchurch should be given immediate “sainthood” status! The help and kindness shown by all I met was just inspiring and I am pleased to say that Baby Benjamin is doing very well, as are the family, and he should be home in a few more weeks.Christchurch is very broken and battered and as I drove around (mainly looking for a park!) it was quite upsetting to see my beautiful city so destroyed. However, the Botanic Gardens and the grounds around the hospital really saved me as they are still beautiful and many of the rhododen-drons, camellias, azaleas etc were still in full flower and looking great, as were the many varieties of maples both Japanese and European. The colour they provide against the greens in the gardens is quite outstanding. The Avon River is almost back to clear water and tourists are to be seen everywhere, cameras clicking, as the boats punt once again on the river – a very heartening sight! Speaking of maples, I must have a bit of a fetish for these delightful trees as I just pur-chased yet another one for my own garden. It is the lovely Acer “Osakasuki”, one of the Japanese hybrids and has a larger bronze/green leaf in the summer and turns a really intense glowing crimson in the autumn. I then did a quick tally and discovered that we now have 9 of these – all different – in our smallish garden. I think I had better stop now! There are so many hybrids of these Acers that I could not list them, but for smaller gardens you could not go past Acer Platanoides “Crimson King”, deep

red/burgundy foliage, Acer “Viridis”, bright limey green turns to gold/orange in au-tumn, Acer “Burgundy Lace” , lighter shades of burgundy into pinky tones.A. “Brilliantissimum” is an-other in the back of my bor-der, which is a delicious shade of shrimpy pink then turning to cream and I feel it is a real standout maple.

Things to do in the next week or so include:• Removing old flower heads and seed capsules from your rhododendrons and azaleas to prevent the energy going into producing seed instead of into new growth. This is done by simply pinching out the old flower head carefully to allow the new leaves to form. At the same time you can trim them to shape.• Pruning and thinning out Camellias of all types to encourage new growth and to ensure that air gets around the plants. This will discourage mealy bug and black aphids from getting a stronghold in the new growth. Tony Murrell said that Camellias, magnolias, citrus etc should be thinned so that “a bird can fly through” …. All I can say is that there must be an aw-ful lot of trapped birds in gardens around Nelson , including my own! • Polyanthus that have finished flowering should now be lifted, divided if necessary and popped into a shady spot in the gar-den to summer over.• Potash and a good general fertiliser

should be put around the dripline of fruit-ing trees to encourage good crops. Citrus also need extra food at this time.• Keep feeding and deadheading roses to encourage new flowers – a mulch is a good idea before the heat of summer also to keep moisture in the soils. Tui, Yates and Burnetts all make very good Rose food.

As I do not like spraying chemicals around much I have found a product that seems to be working well. It is called “Beat a Bug” and is a Chilli, gar-lic and pyrethrum spray. They also make a spray called “Happy Roses” which com-bines a food as well. You will have to spray

before the sun comes out and probably a bit more often but I really feel that this is working as my roses appear stronger and are definitely healthier with the foliar feed-ing program. Once every 2-3 weeks seems to do the trick. This product also contains seaweed and natural minerals and can be bought as a ready mixed spray or in a con-centrate that you mix yourself. I prefer this as it seems to be much better value for money – none of these sprays are cheap!!

From Don at Richmond - Q: Several weeks ago I planted out 3 rows of dwarf beans. Soil was good and I made sure they were watered etc but only about 1/3 of them have germinated. Why would this be?A: I feel that the reason your beans have not come up can be answered in a word – temperature. The bean seeds will not ger-minate while soil temperatures are too low. I suggest that the ones that came up were at the ends of rows where they got a bit more sun. Beans can be planted from October but I would plant some more now in November as the weather is generally warmer and im-portantly for germination, the night temper-atures are improving. You should have suc-cess with your second planting. Do protect the new plants from wind if possible also as they are prone to snap off at the base.

That’s it for this week,

After weeks of washing cars, fun-draising for the New Zealand Secondary School Touch Rugby Championship, the Nelson Col-lege for Girls senior A team will be swapping the hose and sponge for a rugby ball as the side looks to clean up the opposition.Nelson College for Girls finished third place in the tournament last year and despite no South Island Championship due to the Canter-bury earthquake the side is upbeat and confident that it can go further than it did in 2010.South Island teams were picked

based on historic performances, giving NCG the nod.Members of the squad say that fit-ness is at all-time high in the lead up to the tournament in Hamilton on December 9. Coach Cyril Collier has had the girls doing a rigorous fitness regime three times a week, on top of their touch rugby practices. The squad contains a number of New Zealand reps including Nicole Drummond, Courtney Robinson, Rebecca Kersten and Ellie Kershaw. They say they washed scores of cars to help pay for the trip.

It’s Christmas time at Just Incredible!

New show a toe-tapping hootTheatre Alive has done it again, producing a fun, exciting and comical show for Nelsonians to enjoy. The show, Flagons and Foxtrots, is set in Nelson in the 1960’s where dance hall owner Sid Jen-kins is doing his best to keep be-hind the times by stopping a new band playing the Beatles. The show is fun, and for those booking a table in the front rows, interactive. Director and actor Hugh Neill says the com-edy is a great look at New Zea-

land of yesteryear when dance halls were popular. “It was when the six o’clock swill was enforced. People would go to the pub, drink beer then go to the dance halls for entertainment in the evening.”He says the end of the six o’clock swill, where pubs were forced to close at 6pm, was also the down-fall of the dance halls. The show is running this Thurs-day, Friday and Saturday night at the Theatre Royal. To book your ticket visit Everyman Records.

Electronic Pest Control unlike normal Pest Control is safe for people, pets and electronic equip-ment including Wi-Fi and uses the existing electromagnetic fields.Electromagnetic technology utilizes your wiring by simply sending a pulsing or shifting signal through the wires, tuned to irritate the Pests nervous system and make them feel disorientated. The signal is turned on and off at set intervals so the pests will not build tolerance.Ultrasonic pest control emits a high pitch disorientating sound higher than the human hearing range that confuses pests making it difficult or impossible for them to gather food, breed, build their nests and commu-nicate with each other.Ionic pest control electrically charges negative ions in the atmosphere eliminating odours and purifying the air you breathe.Combining these 3 technologies, electronic pest control will drive out all pests from their hiding places and transform your building into a pest repelling environment. Helps to effectively control Cockroaches and Spi-ders. If you have a Rodent for a pet we recommend you do not use Elec-tronic Pest Control.Flybusters Antiants provides total commercial and residential pest con-trol solutions. SPORT

Emily Jensen isn’t just a one-trick pony. The Young Football Fern wore the captaincy armband against the old foe, Australia, and despite captaining the Mainland Pride side in their 6-1 ASB Women’s League final loss to Waikato BOP, Emily has her sights firmly set on leading New Zealand at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, all from the heart of the defence, a position she had never played just two years ago.Emily has spent the majority of her playing ca-reer in the forward line, ever since she kicked her first football at just four years-old, until the 17 year-old sensation was selected in the Mainland Pride squad last year. Her coach Michael De Bono sprang a big surprise on Emily, converting her into a central defender. “I remember where we were, and he’s just like 'Emily, centre back.' And I was looking around to see if there was another Emily,” she says. “I remember saying to the other centre back that you have to tell me what to do. I had no idea what I was doing.”Emily’s height and blinding speed has seen her develop in to one of the country’s top female

defenders. New Zealand selectors took note and selected her for the three match under-17 series against Australia.Emily captained the Young Football Ferns in the third and final match, where New Zealand claimed a 3-1 victory, giving them a historic series win over their bitter rivals. “It was very awesome. Our coach made it really clear that the series was really good for us. But now we have to put it behind us. It’s only a step of the journey.”But football isn’t the only code Emily excels in. She is a Tasman record holder for triple jump, was part of the first ever Waimea College net-ball team to finish inside the top eight in New Zealand and she’s pretty handy with the touch rugby ball as well.Netball will be put on the backburner next season, and while touch rugby remains a pas-sion throughout the latter end of summer, it is clear football is Emily’s future. She was re-cently named in a 24-person squad for further training camps in the summer, before a OFC Women’s Under-17 Qualifying Tournament squad will be confirmed in April. If they win the tournament, the next step will be the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan. New Zealand Young Football Fern Emily Jensen. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

While the south-westerly winds may have buf-feted most of the competitors in Saturday’s Classic Hits RunMahana, 12 blew away records as they ran or walked around the rolling circuit surrounding Woollaston Estates. Phil Costley was supreme with 1hour 11min-utes 25seconds for his double lapper in the half marathon – unchallenged other than by his watch. If the field had started five minutes ear-lier he would have finished in time to 'warm-down’ in the 5km through the vineyard.Paula Canning’s penchant for the course was again displayed in her sub 1.30 performance, a couple of minutes outside her 2009 best, but enough to show she’s again on the right track when Buller’s 30th Anniversary comes around early February. Joining her no doubt in Westport will be Wen-dy Healey, as she lowered her 21.1km walk time by over a minute. The 10km attracted the biggest field with close to 400 and the country side was awash with them all focussed on the finish line to take home their special event labelled "vinetage."

At the front was Trevor Voyce, still not able to sit down and relax after his ultra efforts of late, and his 37.43 is the new mark to beat in 2012 and beyond. Nikki Nisbett set a scorching sub one hour and joins Bevan Cook as the new walk times to chase.Prostate Cancer walked away with over $1800 but it wasn’t all charity for their survivor mem-bers who manned the course as marshalls along with the much appreciated support of Mahana and Upper Moutere Schools, FC Nel-son football club and the NBS Strider Hands. Before that though, Nelson Events "wind down" their sporting event organising for 2011 with the Classic Hits Jingle Bells Jog on Sunday December 11. The run, walk, skate or scoot from the City to the Surf of Tahunanui Beach, which is an annual favourite, with many participants get-ting into Christmas spirit wearing festive cos-tumes, raises funds for the local branch of the Heart Foundation.Find out more plus get full results for RunMa-hana at www.nelsonevents.co.nz.

When the wind died down, it was up to the athletes to blow the crowd away, and they sure did with some impressive personal bests bro-ken in the inaugural Harold Nelson Classic. The meet, hosted by Athletics Nelson, re-members the late Harold Nelson. Harold was a former British Empire Games gold medallist and was the flag bearer at the 1948 Olympic Games. In the blue ribbon event, the 1500m, Craig Lautenslager and Tom Stringer went into the final bend neck and neck. Both runners were hoping to break the four minute barrier after being lead out by a quick Ewoud Noordeloos 800m. Tom was unable to sneak past Craig, though, with the latter taking the bragging rights with a 3 minute 59.06 second race.Long jumper Brendon Barnett continued his trend of shaving past his New Zealand Men’s 17 long jump record with a 7.36m jump.Alex Jordan was too good in a strong Men’s A 100m sprint field, claiming the

100m/200m double. Alex’s times were 10.80 seconds for the 100m and 21.52 second for the 200m.Hurdler Deirdre Anderson surprised New Zealand sprinter Hazel Bowering-Scott in the Women’s 100m, winning in a personal best time of 13.17 seconds.Hazel had previously fought off strong com-petition by young Claire Erasmus to claim a victory in the Women’s 200m with a time of 27.23 seconds.Sixteen year-old Chris Brake jumped an im-pressive 1.90m in the high jump and took out the 100m Men’s B race in 11.67 seconds.Dale Pritchard threw 14.01m to win the shot put and 43.77m to take out the discus. The next Athletics Nelson Twilight Series meet will be held at Saxton Oval this Friday

The Tasman Thunder did every-thing asked of them and got the early bragging rights over the Grey-mouth Grizzlies.Round one of Suspension Develop-ments Tasman Thunder Stockcar Challenge Cup went the way of the home side thanks to an impressive run away display from Liam Smith and some smart tactics by expe-rienced head and captain Cody Teece.Liam dodged his way passed the op-position to win the race and finish as the only home driver amongst the top four. But it was still enough to see the Thunder take top hon-ours.Nelson will host race action again this weekend with the ELF Super Cup series bringing 16 of the South Island’s best super saloons to the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speed-way. Racing starts at 7pm on Satur-day.

IN BRIEFSOFTBALL: A total of 14 home runs were hit in 8 games of senior softball action over the weekend. Of those, 5 were automatics and one (women’s) was a grand slam (in-diamond home run with loaded bags).

CRICKET: It was a terrible day of cricket for Wakatu and Stoke/Nayland in the Car Company Nelson Cricket two day competi-tion on Saturday, both losing. But new boys on the block, ACOB, enjoyed a great win at the Bontanics over competition leaders Waimea Toi Toi United.

TENNIS: The Winstanley Shield senior ten-nis representative fixture took place at Hope Tennis Club on Saturday in blustery condi-tions. The three province fixture became only two with the West Coast defaulting as unable to field a team, leaving Nelson play-ing Marlborough to retain the trophy. Nelson men Alex Low and Todd McCauley got off to a good start beating Robert Cowl-ishaw and Jin Cho in a tough three setter 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. The Nelson ladies Amanda Coeland and Susan Rooney had a convinc-ing doubles win beating Lilly O’Fagan and Rebecca Boon 6-2, 6-2.

Welcome to the world’s longest par 5The list of must-do golf courses around the world has just been added to by one, but you won’t find it in the US, Scotland or even in Dubai – it is clos-er to Tapawera.Golden Downs, a small nine-hole course with around 45 members, now has the world’s longest par 5. It is a whopping 721 yards, or 660 metres, and ten yards longer than the next biggest in the United States, according to New Zealand Golf. When volunteers of the club decided to extend the seventh hole two years ago they were aiming for the longest par 5 in Australasia to give them a point of difference and encourage people to come out and play the course. When their new tees were ratified by NZ Golf the body began trying to find a longer par 5. They couldn’t, and so now Golden Downs has a claim to golfing fame. But club president Preston Shaw says the hole hasn’t found favour with all that play it. “Some

of the lessor golfers struggle with it. We had our first competition using it last month and not one person par-ed the hole,” he says.Interest is growing though and bringing much-needed attention to the club. New Zealand’s two largest golfing magazines are running profiles on the course and a television show has also ex-pressed interest in covering it.Long-serving green-keeper Val Griffith says the attention is more than welcome, despite the extra workload in maintaining a hole almost the length of seven rugby fields. “I think it’s great, it gets people talking about us and we’re already getting people coming along because of the hole.”The hole was the brainchild of club member Tre-vor Timpson, he says golfers from all over New Zealand will be keen to have a go. “It adds some-thing to this club, it’s a beautiful course, but to have an attraction like this, here in Nelson will hopefully get people out here.”

Three of the region’s top young footballers are moving to Welling-ton, hoping to secure a pathway to America.Nelson Suburbs duo Darrell Han-nah, 17, and Cory Brown, 15, will join FC Nelson College’s Furkan Kokcu, 16, at the Olé Football Acad-emy for 2012.Olé combines full-time football academy training with education. It was founded on the idea that the team too often gets in the way of individual player development. The academy’s success at helping gain US College scholarships was the biggest drawcard, they say. Darrell has been a member of the AMI Nelson Suburbs Mainland Pre-mier League squad for the past two years, while Cory made his debut this season.Furkan played his 2011 season with FC Nelson College. He is a central midfielder and competed in the Nel-son College first XI that reached the

top six in New Zealand. Cory, a left sided midfielder who can play nearly anywhere on the park, was touted as the next big thing to come out of Nayland College and will leave a huge gap in the side. Cory was scouted by the directors of the academy. The three players say a lack of expo-sure in the region, which does not have its own ASB Premiership side, made the move out of Nelson inevi-table. However, the move might surprise some of the region’s coaches due to the fact all three are yet to complete secondary school.Cory will move to Wellington in April when he turns 16. A regular day at Olé involves two sessions of football training and two sessions of school work. They are there from 8:30am until 6:30pm.Cory says it will be hard leaving the region. “I really don’t want to leave Nayland College.”
