3D video technology is already in the market with stereoscopic systems

• Television sets

• Blu-Ray Disc players

• highly motivated by the success of 3D movies in the theaters:

• brings a new visual experience to viewers

This presentation shows current technical efforts to bring 3DTV signals to the homes by the free-to-air terrestrial digital television system.

INTRODUCTION

Plano-stereoscopic imaging systems deliver two images

(left and right) that are arranged to be seen

simultaneously, or near simultaneously, by the left and

right eyes.

INTRODUCTION

Viewers perceive increased depth in the picture, which

becomes more like the natural binocular viewing

experience.

Since 2010 many 3DTV capable consumer products

have been launched in the market.

Issue's Demo

How to use current 3D capable TVs in the market?

What happens if we change from a 3D content to a non-3D one?

Let's check these out in practice.

DVB-3DTV Graphics Signaling

Graphics and subtitles over 3DTV need to be positioned harmoniously within the three-dimensional scene

The depth information can be expressed in terms of disparity

A new segment, Disparity Signaling Segment (DSS), was added to DVB subtitling systems

HELLGE, C.; TORRE, Estibaliz G.; GÓMEZ-BARQUERO, D.; SCHIERL, T.; WIEGAND, T. HDTV and 3DTV Services Over DVB-T2 Using Multiple PLPs with SVC and MVC. 61st Annual IEEE Broadcast Symposium, Alexandria, VA USA, October 2011.

• Transmission of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) or Multiview Video Coding (MVC) using the Multiple Physical Layer Pipes (PLPs) feature of DVB-T2.

• Video-Plus-Depth representation.• Video uses conventional MPEG-2 approach. • The depth of a sequence is a side information

OUR RESEARCH GROUP

3DTV Transmission AspectsCelso Kurashima / Adenilson Tomé / Raoni Lourenço

Research topics of interest:

•Digital Television (SBTVD mainly)

•3D-TV related:

• Free Viewpoint Video - FVV and FTV

•Immersive communications related:

• Large visual image/graphics – e.g. 4K, panoramic, etc.

• Multi-projection / Multiple camera systems

• Telepresence

OUR RESEARCH GROUP

3DTV Transmission AspectsCelso Kurashima / Adenilson Tomé / Raoni Lourenço

Study of techniques for insertion of 3D video signals in SBTVD – current master project:

•Transmission of Stereoscopic 3D Video in SBTVD, Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and Multi View Video Coding (MVC).

Page 20: 3DTV Transmission Aspects

CONCLUSION

Questions for future of SBTVD:Adoption of DVB-3DTV Signaling for SBTVD is simple.

Is it enough to accept this approach purely?

Shouldn't we start working with new codecs directly?
