National Art School Selections Calendar
Two students from Year 11 have been selected to attend the prestigious
National Art School (NAS) HSC Intensive Studio Practice. The two girls,
Brooke Hallett and Georgia Dent, will attend these intensive programs
during the July and September school holidays. The NAS program is
designed to enhance and extend students’ technical, conceptual and
intellectual skills under the direction of experienced, practising artists,
through intensive practical study in their selected medium. The NAS HSC
Intensive Studio Practice is endorsed by the NSW Board of Studies and has
been offered by NAS to Year 11 Visual Art students in all government and
non-government high schools since 2000. Brooke will be studying
printmaking and Georgia will be studying sculpture. At the end of the course
an exhibition of students’ works will be held. Students, their families and
Visual Art teachers will be invited to attend the exhibition. Attending the NAS
will be noted on the students HSC certificate as a one unit course but will
not contribute to the students ATAR count. According to their teacher,
Ms Angela Bagordo, the girls are extremely talented artists and this course
will enhance their abilities dramatically.

Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Community
All students in Years 7 to 11 have completed their half yearly examinations and teachers are now
busily marking exams and writing Semester One reports. Students will receive their reports during the
last week of this term and we will be holding our Semester One Parent/Teacher Evening on Thursday
21st July, which is the first Thursday in Term 3. The P&C will be offering supper (soup, cake, tea and
coffee) on the night as a fund raising event.
Next Tuesday we will be holding our Welcome to Year 7 School Social from 6pm to 9pm. The SRC has
been busily preparing the evening. Students need to remember that you must be at school on Tuesday
and not on a level in order to attend the evening.
Last week I signed an agreement with TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute for them to come up to the school for a week
in late August to train and qualify six teachers from NHHS and FPVC in the running of our Challenge Ropes course that is
situated at the back of the school.
Studies of adventure learning interventions consistently show positive benefits on academic learning and wider outcomes
such as self-confidence and self-esteem. The High and Low Ropes Course at NHHS is a school based adventure program
designed to address a range of personal development outcomes across the whole school in order to build the resilience of
our students. The outcomes of the Low Ropes Course are for participants to develop insights on: how individuals
communicate within the group, how the group works as a unit and how individuals behave within the group (called “group
dynamic”). The outcomes of a High Ropes Course are for participants to develop insights on: the individual’s self-belief, the
individual’s self-talk or inner talk (the ability to believe in yourself that you can do something) and the individual's reaction to
the challenge or risk (called “self-efficacy”). The High and Low Ropes Course will engage students in activities that require
group co-operation, communication and problem solving skills in an environment that is both supportive and personally
challenging.
The addition of a Challenge Ropes course into our curriculum will also enable NHHS to further improve our outdoor
education program that already sees us offer students the Duke of Edinburgh qualification and kayaking as a sport option.
This opportunity for our school community is just another example of how Gonski funding is being used to improve the
educational outcomes of all of our students.
Highlight of the fortnight
The start of another amazing NHHS school musical. Last Wednesday all interested students for the 2017 school musical
Disco Inferno started the journey that will come to its conclusion when the school musical will run towards the end of Term
One 2017. For those students involved this will be one of the greatest memories you have when, in thirty years time, you
think back to your school life at NHHS. If you have not yet tried out for the musical, but would like to, it’s not too late. Please
speak to Mr Janssen or Mr Gilbert about being a part of it. Enjoy the journey.
As always please contact me at the school if you have any questions in regards to your child’s education at NHHS.

Message to Parents/Carers
Keep Kids Safe: #parentscheckthecheck!
Parents or carers who engage the services of a private tutor or coach have an important role to play in helping to keep their children safe.
From 1st April 2016 adults who provide private tuition or coaching services to children will need to obtain a new Working With Children Check.
The Certificate for Self Employed People will no longer be valid after their expiry date and the certificate holders will need to apply for a new Working With Children Check.
Parents or carers should ask their child’s tutor or coach for their name, date of birth and their Working With Children Check number.
They must then go online and verify the tutor or coach is not barred from working with children in NSW.
Verifying that a tutor or coach can work with children is quick and easy – just follow the simple steps at www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/parentscheckthecheck
If you suspect that an adult is providing services to children without a Working With Children Check you can go online to make a confidential report or phone (02) 9286 7219.
Help to keep kids safe by sharing #parentscheckthecheck with your family and friends through your own social media networks.
Sports Report
It has been a very busy start to Term 2 in the Sports Department, and the rest of the Term looks like being just as frantic. Our
annual Cross Country and Athletics carnivals have been held and from these a number of students have attended - or will
attend zone carnivals - and then North Coast representations. Congratulations to all students who participated and had a go
at any carnival, and enjoyed their experiences.
Athletics Carnival:
The annual Athletics Carnival was held at EJ Biffin Oval on
Wednesday 18th May. Following on from the fantastic weather
we had for previous carnivals this year the day was again
beautiful. Participation in the different events was high with a
number of students breaking records. Record breakers were:
Ted Wikaira in the 15 years 100 and 200m, Ethan Hocking 15
years 400m, Olivia Langley 17 years 800m, Will Baker 17 years
Long Jump, Jamie-Lee Duckett 15 years Discus and Georgia
Dent 17 years Shot Put. Some of these records were over
twenty years old. The winning house on the day was Gordon
with 2003 points. Congratulations to these students. Any student
placing 1st or 2nd in any event now qualifies for the zone carnival
which will be held on June 9th at EJ Biffin Oval.
Zone Cross Country
On Friday 27th May a squad of twenty eight students travelled to
Kempsey to compete in the Zone Cross Country. Students again
produced some outstanding performances with four students placing 1st
in their age groups - Ella Williams 12 years, Isabella Ronan 13 years,
Molly Langley 16 years and Olivia Langley 17 years. We also had a
number of students finishing in the top five placings. Congratulations to
all students who competed on the day. Everyone showed great spirit
and sportsmanship during the carnival. Students who placed in the top
six have qualified to represent the North Coast at Murwillumbah on the
17th June.
North Coast Squash
Two students, Zahra and Ethan Hocking, attended the North Coast squash trials on Friday
20th May at the Coffs Harbour squash courts. Both students had exceptional games and
have won their way through to represent at the State competition. Zahra and Ethan will
represent North Coast from the 27th to the 29th of June again at Coffs Harbour. Both
Zahra and Ethan play in the local competition at Nambucca Heads and we wish them every
success in their competitions.

Recently we were delighted to have a Japanese drumming workshop for all of Year 7 students. Mrs. Kiyomi Calwell came
with her skills and equipment, and everyone drummed up a roar with the TAIKO. Mrs Calwell explained to the students
importance of the correct use of the drumming equipment . Listening and learning to coordinate together as a group, made
the unique sounds. The students did the school proud with their excellent cooperation, and had lots of fun!! A big ARIGATOO
to the Principal, Mr McKinney, for making this amazing experience possible. Sensei

Years 7- 9 students will be attending a cyber bullying program presented by Brainstorm
Productions titled “Sticks & Stones”. All students from these Years will attend the session that will
be free to everyone. The production will be on Tuesday 28th June.
Congratulations to members of our SRC who organised themselves and
some friends to help with the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. Stefo
from our local Salvation Army attended our assembly presenting all
students who helped on the day with a certificate. She was most grateful
for the help from the students and could not thank them enough for their
efforts. She informed us that this year the local Salvo’s had hoped to raise
$17,000 which they accomplished with the students’ help. This money will
be used locally for emergency relief (floods, fires) and emergency
accommodation for victims of domestic violence.
