As Pope Francis said when he visited the United States: “One of the great challenges facing the Church in this gen-eration is to foster in the faithful a sense of personal re-sponsibility for the Church’s mission, and to enable them to fulfill that responsibility as missionary disciples, as a leaven of the Gospel in our world. This will require crea-tivity in adapting to changed situations, carrying forward the legacy of the past not primarily by maintaining our structures and institutions, which have served us well, but above all by being open to the possibilities which the Spirit opens up to us and communicating the joy of the Gospel, daily and in every season of our life.” With this in mind, it is important to prayerfully discern our own efforts to renew our faith lives and our active partici-pation in the life of the Church. As mentioned before, there are three mission imperatives that guide the spiritual and structural efforts of Renew My Church: Make Disciples Everything we do through Renew My Church must create a strong and sustainable foundation upon which our Church can serve to bring more people - today and in the future - into a personal encounter and lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ. Build Community Our parish and school communities today face a number of obstacles to vitality—the parishioner bases of many par-ishes are very small; the number of school-aged children in areas has decreased; we have fewer priests; many of our parishes are not sustainable to carry on the mission of the Church; and many parishes and schools have deferred maintenance for many years, resulting in unaffordable cap-ital needs. Through Renew My Church, we aim to ensure our com-munities have enough resources to carry out our mission. But we also recognize resourcing alone does not address all of our challenges. Parish and school communities that today are well-resourced and vibrant still face significant challenges because of the changes in society. That is why we need a spiritual renewal at the foundation of all we do through Renew My Church. Inspire Witness In keeping with the urging of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis is calling the Church to go out into the world as a field hospital to bring healing to a world torn by divi-sion, violence, racism, poverty and to promote respect for human dignity and life. Questions for reflection: * Am I a disciple of Jesus Christ? What holds me back from following Him more closely? From introducing oth-ers to Him? * What is my relationship with the parish community? Where can I give of my time and talents to strengthen the larger Catholic community?

OBSTACLES

The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Je-sus share something in common in today’s scrip-ture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we trav-el along the journey of faith. So often we experi-ence weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made per-fect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

A Prayer For “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wound-ed soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teach-ers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sis-ters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fear-less. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The in-scription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the im-prisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.”
