Sweeten The Air With Cinnamon Sticks !
Scented candles and air fresheners can be
pricey. Luckily, you can make your home smell
clean and inviting with just a cinnamon stick.
Boil a pan of water, add a cinnamon stick and
let it simmer on the stove. The scent will permeate through
your home. For a slight citrus scent, toss in some orange or
lemon rinds.

Thrift Shop is now a very strong source of support for our
operating fund.
Public Welcome 9am-3pm Mon.- Fri.
Please remember us!
The Fourth of July weekend was approaching, and Miss
Pelham, the nursery school teacher, took the opportunity to
tell her class about patriotism. 'We live in a great country,' she
announced. 'One of the things we should be happy is that, in
this country, we are all free.'
Trevor, who was a little boy in her class, came walking up to
her from the back of the room. He stood with his hands on
his hips and said loudly, 'I'm not free. I'm four.'

The Importance of What We Do
Being Part Of Our Community
1. We are still a collection site for the Food Pantry. At this time, pasta and sauces are needed. Please buy a second
something on sale and drop it off here. They also need canned and packaged goods that won’t spoil.
2. Eyeglasses are still being collected and given to the Lion’s Club.
3. Tabs from pop top cans (soda, tuna, cat food, etc.) are being collected for the Ronald McDonald House, which shelters
families of children who are seriously ill or injured. We give them to the Women’s Club who takes them to a McDonald’s
repository.
4. Both our choral group “The Sunshine Singers” and our band “The Impossibles” go to different nursing homes and
assisted living facilities to entertain those residents every month.
5. Please bring in any post-marked stamps to the front desk. We collect cancelled stamps, and they are given to
the Blind Association.
6. The V.A. Clinic in Allentown has a little coffee room available to patients while they wait for their appointments. They
need sugar, tea bags, artificial sweeteners and stirrers.
7. We are now recycling our used papers and newspapers at our Center. The Milford Volunteer Fire Dept. has a dumpster
in our parking lot. Please feel free to use it.
8. We are collecting pennies for Cancer Research. Please bring your pennies and loose change in to help.
9. We are sending gift boxes to our Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We need more donations to fill our boxes.
10. We help support Quakertown’s Fourth Of July Fireworks Display with our Bingo-In-The-Park and selling Pulled
Pork Sandwiches at these 2 fundraising booths.
11. Our Volunteers distribute our newsletter throughout the Upper Bucks Area.

Today as before, our brave do fight
For a land they love, a flag so right
The pride of our country, yes they are
Strength of our nation, best by far
Just as our brave men from each war gone by
They march for us proudly, flag held high
From all over this land they come to serve
They’re taught by the best, this they deserve
When troops give their all, the world does see
Whether serving on land, the air or at sea
The pride from this country, march through war
With home drawn strength, held deep in their core
Our best are so awesome; their loved ones well know
May God guide their journey, where they for us go
What these brave must have is support from their own
The love from their people, firm thankfulness shown
Our greatest achievement is that we’re still free
Please take time to ponder who caused this to be.

July Holidays and Observances
The birthday of the United States or
Independence Day is July 4, 1776.
The holiday celebrating the birth of
the United States is more commonly
referred to as the 4th of July. It is the
most well known holiday of the month.
Parents' Day is celebrated on the
fourth Sunday of July. President Bill
Clinton established Parent's Day in
1994.
There are several monthly
observances during the month of July.
Some of them are listed below.
Baked Beans Month
Blueberry Month
Hot Dog Month
Ice Cream Month
Best Pecan Pie
1 stick butter
1 cup light Karo
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs,
beaten
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla
Dash of salt
1 cup chopped pecans
1 9-inch pie shell
Brown butter in saucepan until it’s
golden brown. Do Not Burn! Let cool.
In separate bowl add in other
ingredients, stir. Blend in browned
butter well. Pour in unbaked pie shell
and bake at 425 degrees for 10
minutes, then lower to 325 degrees for
40 minutes.
Tip: The secret to making this pie is
browning the butter !
I want to thank all my July 4th volunteers. I know this is going to print before
the 4th, but I don’t want to wait till October’s newsletter comes out. Thanks for
setting up and breaking down, calling and running Bingo and selling Pulled Pork
and Raffle tickets. THANK YOU ALL!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH…..

History of The Upper Bucks Senior Activity Center T
The Upper Bucks Senior Activity Center is one of four centers operated by the Bucks County Association for
Retired and Senior Citizens, a non-profit organization. Our center provides activities and services for anyone
over 55 years of age. Fifty years ago in 1966, approximately 300 people gathered at our Center’s first home, the
United Church of Christ at 4th Street and Park Avenue, in Quakertown. They were there to see the culmination
of their planning for a place, where people could come and meet old friends, make new friends, keep minds and
hands busy and develop new skills. In 1981 the Center found a temporary new home at St. John’s Lutheran
Church at 10th Street and West Broad Street. In 1982, the Municipality of Quakertown bought the Acme on 4th
Street, which was renovated to become the home for our Center. At that time, the Borough of Quakertown
graciously agreed to accept a rent from us of one dollar per year, for twenty-five years. That building was our
home for twenty-five years, until a fire completely destroyed the building on June 29th 2007. We then moved
into the Trinity Lutheran Church at 102 North Hellertown Avenue on July 9th 2007. On June 5th, 2008 we
moved into the Milford Fire House where we are at the present.
This year we will be celebrating fifty years as our area’s Senior Activity Center !
Come on out and join in the activities here.
Have a fun July 4th . . In Quakertown
Start your morning off with a bang - with a
pancake breakfast. Following breakfast your day
will be crammed with music, song, dance, water
battles, Bingo, games for children and all the food
you can eat ! As the afternoon shades into evening,
grab your chairs and blankets. Gather around for
amazing renditions of traditional and patriotic
tunes by famous Quakertown Band ! As the music
winds down, darkness sets the scene for
Quakertown’s traditional fireworks ! Our center
will be selling Pulled Pork Sandwiches and doing
the Bingo.
Spend The Day With Family And Friends
At Quakertown’s Community Day
On Friday, July 4th !
The Good Old Days
“When I was a kid,” the old man said, “My mother could send
me to the store, and I’d get a salami, two pints of milk, six
oranges, two loaves of bread, a magazine and a pair of blue jeans,
all for a dollar!” He continued, “You can’t do that anymore. They
got those darn video cameras every where you look!”

MANY CHANGES HAVE OCCURRED OVER THE YEARS AND YOU MAY REMEMBER…When Sunday’s were serious days
of church, rest, quiet, car rides, family visits, reading thick Sunday newspapers with pages of funnies or listening to a ball game
on the radio. Stores were closed and also the movies…Week day newspapers cost 3cents while the Sunday editions cost 10
cents…Summer entertainment included going to Central, Dorney or Willow Grove Amusement Parks…Locally there were
Firemen’s carnivals in Quakertown, Richlandtown, Milford Square, Coopersburg and Sellersville with musical entertainment,
games like bingo, penny pitch, ring the canes, gambling wheels with groceries, watermelons or blankets for prizes and no
amusement rides…Linda Lake, Menlo Park in Perkasie, Blue Dove in Coopersburg and Eichner’s Grove next to the Tohickon
Creek for swimming. Rowboats and canoes were also popular at Eichner’s…an icebox to keep your food cold was a must in
each kitchen. The truck hauling the ice usually had a heavy tarp cover to keep the ice from melting. A sign in the front window of
the house showed the ice man the size of ice to deliver. Children would empty the ice pan under the box…Just married couples
would drive around town with car horns blaring and tin cans tied to the rear car bumpers…Most babies being born at home with
only the doctor making the delivery…Rubber baby pants and only cloth diapers…Children using hand held school bags instead
of shoulder backpacks…Most men wearing dress straw hats in the summer and fedora hats the rest of the year. True gentlemen
tipping their hats to ladies…Listening to WSM radio broadcast nationally of the “Grand Ole Opry” featuring Roy Acuff, Patsy
Cline, The Carter family, Bill Monroe and many other stars along with comedians, Cousin Minnie Pearl and the Duke of
Paducah…Quakertown steam laundry, Nicholas & Diehl Hardware, Charlie Texter’s Drug Store…Stoneback & Nase Company –
General Contractors & Millwork, Arthur Booth Plumbing, Russ Schantz Real Estate & Insurance in Trumbauersville

When you see a soldier, be sure to
shake his hand and let that soldier
know you’re grateful for the
protection the military affords our

thanks for every soldier’s personal
sacrifice. In order to serve our

Labor Day . . . And What It Means . . .
The history of Labor Day seems
unimportant for what has become a
wonderful end of summer. Beach
parties, pool parties, barbecues
and fireworks. Labor Day is
celebrated the first Monday in
September. This is the last three
day holiday weekend of the
summer. The original celebration
included parades of the local labor
unions and speeches by prominent
local politicians. We look at Labor
Day today as a last chance to get
away before Fall and Winter set in.
It is important to remember that
this day is set aside to celebrate the
hard work of the people that make
America great !

Two Women And Cards
Two elderly ladies had been friends since their 30’s. Now
in their 80’s, they still got together a couple times a week
to play cards. One day they were playing gin rummy and
one of them said, “You know, we’ve been friends for many
years and, please don’t get mad, but for the life of me, I
can’t remember your name. Please tell me what it is.” Her
friend glared at her. She continued to glare and stare at her for at least
three minutes. Finally, she said, “How soon do you need to know???

Safety And Efficiency In Our Kitchen I am asking all of our
Members to help maintain efficiency in our kitchen. You can help by stopping by our kitchen window whenever
you would like to talk to any of our kitchen staff. This will help speed things up while they are preparing and
serving food. Also, I am always concerned for the safety of all of our Members, and with this in mind, please
visit with our kitchen staff members out in the dining room. A commercial kitchen can be a dangerous place for
slips and falls ! Sara
