For its 53rd year, theGranddaddy of Farm Showsis getting a new home.
The Eau Claire FarmShow is moving to the Me-nards Conference Center, ahalf-mile off of Interstate 94just off Highway 312 on thenorthwest side of the city. The center opened last yearand boasts the most at oorspace, 53,413 square feet, inthe Chippewa Valley.
Steve Henry, founder ofNorth Country Enterprises, said the show had simplyoutgrown its former space atthe Eau Claire Indoor SportsCenter, which is the secondlargest indoor exhibition hallin the area. New vendorswere lined up on a waitinglist, and the parking lot wasoverowing onto city streets.
The Menards ConferenceCenter boasts 1,000 parking
spaces, as well as a 300-seatauditorium, on-site kitchenand dining space along withexhibit space, all adjacent tothe Menards corporateheadquarters. Also used forcorporate training for Me-nards employees, the centercan seat up to 2,500 peoplein a theater layout and 1,600in a banquet conguration.
Large overhead doors and aloading dock can accommo-date the large equipmentand displays moving in forthe farm show.
Henry said vendors willhave their own parking areabehind the center with easyaccess for loading and un-loading their equipment.Along with being the newsite for the Eau Claire FarmShow, the Menards Confer-ence Center is also homethe Wisconsin Sport Showlater in March and the HerImpressions Bridal Fair andWomen’s Expo in Septem-
ber. Past events include acareer show and CrossFitcompetition.
The second longest run-ning regional farm show inWisconsin, the Eau ClaireFarm show dates back to1963 with the NorthernState Power Company’sElectric Power Show at theNorthern Wisconsin Fair-grounds. The farm showlater moved to the LondonSquare Mall.
“Can you do a farmshow?” was the questionposed to Henry 40 years agoby the managers at London
Square Mall. He said yesand North Country Enter-prises, now led by the sec-ond generation, Bill andSally Henry, has been orga-nizing the Eau Claire FarmShow ever since. The fam-ily-owned company alsomanages the Midwest FarmShow in La Crosse, the RiceLake Farm Show and theGreater Wisconsin FarmExpo in Wausau.
Henry said the rst year at
the Menards ConferenceCenter will be a learning ex-perience as the team at NorthCountry Enterprises gureout the booth congurationsand trafc ow at the center.Since the center doubles as atraining facility, the space isnot a wide open rectangulararena like the previous site,Henry explained. The audi-torium and stage area is cen-trally located with a T-shaped exhibit hall surround-ing it and food court near themain entrance.
About 200 company rep-resentatives will be on-hand to meet show visitors, with an expected crowd of5,000 to 7,000. Despitemore square footage,Henry said exhibitor inter-est in the show continues toexceed the space. Newvendors are still waitingand some current vendorswould like to book morebooth space.
“We were lled in earlyDecember with still another15 to 20 vendors wanting ex-hibit space,” he said. “Weneed another 15,000, 20,000or 30,000 square feet to ac-commodate all the requests.”

UW-Extension booth to focus on farm safety
Hagedorn
By Sara BredesenRegional Editor | [email protected]
A new location and a dou-ble-wide display space will
give UW-Extension room tofeature farm safety in a bigway at this year’s Eau ClaireFarm Show.
“We were a little cramped
last year, so it’s giving us anopportunity to spread out abit, maybe make for a nicerenvironment and maybe giveus some more room to high-light some of the resourcesthat Extension has availablefor both adult and youth pro-
gramming,” said Mark Hage-dorn, Eau Claire CountyUW-Extension agent.
Using resources from afarm safety grant, Hagedornsaid the focus will be on farmsafety, particularly for youth.
“We just got a new tractor
safety video released in bothEnglish and Spanish, so thatseems to be something thatproducers are looking for,” hesaid.
Visitors will also ndvideos, handouts, fact sheetsand prepared training modulesfor safe animal handling andskid-steer safety.
“That seems to be a point ofinterest whether you’re asmaller, more traditional farmor CAFO-size with OSHAoverview,” he said.
Another OccupationalSafety and Health Administra-tion issue is horizontal bunkersilos. Hagedorn said a videowill be looping on that topictoo.
“Hopefully we can getsome discussion going on pro-
tocols thatcan be im-plementedto keep em-ployeessafe,” hesaid.
Whilesafety is thefocus, Ex-tension will
also have fact sheets and in-formation on a wide range ofresearch-based topics. Hage-dorn said representatives ofthe 4-H program will be thereto talk about youth program-ming in surrounding counties.
For dairy producers, a newversion of the 2013 cost ofproduction analysis for heiferraising will be available withupdated feed costs.

IN THE FAMILY. IN THE BLOOD.When the second generation of Kaiser Family Farm approached Ruder Ware on leaving the farm to their sons, our experienced team of ag attorneys knew where to begin, and how much a smooth transition meant to them. We know that farms are highly specialized businesses requiring careful planning to minimize potential disagreements and “surprises.” But we also know that to some, a farm is more than just a business. It’s a treasure and a tradition.

Aquarius Water makesits farm show debut
By Sara BredesenRegional Editor | [email protected]
It takes only 0.3 parts permillion of iron in a farm’swater supply — justenough to start getting
staining — to affect how acow digests feed, accordingto Jeremy Severson withAquarius Water Condition-ing in Eau Claire.
Iron and other mineralsin the water supply are
something a nutritionistshould be taking into ac-count, unless a dairy’s wa-ter is treated.
“Once you clean up thewater, the nutritionist canwork off of clean waterand come up with a betterbalance of feed, and youend up with better milkproduction,” Seversonsaid.
Aquarius will be one ofthe companies taking partin the Eau Claire FarmShow for the rst timeMarch 8-9 at the MenardsConference Center in EauClaire to explain the bene-ts of ltered and treatedwater, especially on a dairyfarm.

Aquarius Water has of-ces in Bemidji, Brainerdand Little Canada in Min-nesota, and Hayward, Sirenand Eau Claire in Wiscon-sin. Severson said the com-pany has serviced dairyfarms for many years, butits products haven’t beenused as much as they couldbe on farms.
Historically, livestockwater used to be hand-pumped from shallowwells where the watermight have been hard, butiron wasn’t much of an is-sue, he said.
“Now everybody is re-quired to have these deepwells. Once you go deep, you’re out of the bacteriarange, but you get into ironand all kinds of other is-sues,” he said.
Aquarius specializes inKinetico treatment sys-tems that run without elec-tricity and are never offline for recharge or ush-ing. That on-demand avail-ability of fresh water isgood for cattle, Seversonsaid.
“Cattle don’t care whattime of day it is. If they’rethirsty, they’re thirsty,” hesaid.
Severson will have litera-ture and some of the Ki-netico treatment units at theshow for visitors to seersthand.

Creature Encounters returning to farm showMarthe Herbert and some
of her wildlife friends will bereturning to the Eau ClaireFarm Show this year fordaily shows during theMarch 8-9 show.
Herbert last presented atthe farm show in 2012.
Herbert is a lifelong ani-mal lover who rescues non-releasable exotic animalsand cares for them at herRamsey, Minn., home.
For more than 15 years, she has owned and operatedCreature Encounters, a busi-ness that offers wildlife edu-cational programmingthroughout the Upper Mid-west.
Herbert has volunteered towork with animals for more
than 30 years and workedwith animals professionallyfor about 20 years.
Several years ago, shehelped create a wildlife edu-cation program for Knott’sCamp Snoopy at the Mall ofAmerica in Bloomington,Minn. Her work withwildlife helped her earn Mu-tual of Omaha’s HeritageAward.
Herbert said she tries tobring a variety of animals toshows, showing them andtalking about them individu-ally. She tries to dispel com-mon myths about certain an-imals. Weather and the ani-mals’ moods often dictatewhich ones get to go on theroad with her.
Herbert cares for a widevariety of animals, includingwildlife from Africa, SouthAmerica and other areas ofthe U.S. Some were un-wanted pets, some were in-jured and had no place elseto go.
Before accepting an ani-mal, Herbert makes sure shehas the space and the nan-cial means to care for it; shealso considers whether theanimal has the temperamentto be part of her publicshows.
Herbert shares her homewith talking parrots, Egyp-tian fruit bats, raccoons, snakes, lizards, bugs, hedge-hogs, chinchillas and more.
Most of Herbert’s showstake place at schools, but shealso brings animals to senior
citizens’ facilities and grouphomes. She also is asked toparticipate in corporateevents and birthday parties.

Hospital to receive Aggie Award
Submitted photo
Those attending the 2015 Farm Family Event enjoyed afeatured speaker and presentations and screenings on avariety of health-related topics of interest to farmfamilies.
By Heidi ClausenRegional Editor | [email protected]
Its annual Farm FamilyEvent and availability of a24-hour doctor-staffedemergency room areamong the reasons HSHSSt. Joseph’s Hospital ofChippewa Falls will re-ceive this year’s AggieAward during the EauClaire Farm Show.
The hospital will be recog-nized during the show, set for March 8-9 at theMenards Conference Center.
“It’s an extraordinaryaward, and it’s very hum-bling,” said St. Joseph’sPresident and Chief Execu-tive Ofcer Joan Coff- man. “To be honored in
this way really is a testa-ment to the mission ofHospital Sisters that goesback more than 130 years. It makes us feel good.”
Each year, St. Joseph’shosts a free Farm Family
Event at which farm fami-lies can receive health in-formation and screenings, hear a keynote speaker andenjoy a complimentarylunch. About 150 peopleattend each year.
The licensed 193-bed
medical facility also is theonly hospital in ChippewaCounty with a 24-hourphysician-staffed emer-gency room and Level IIItrauma center, which canbe invaluable to those in-volved in farming acci-dents.
Coffman said they be-came Level III-certied in2008 after a survey showedhalf of all patients werecoming to the ER in theirpersonal vehicles.
“They were coming any-way, and we wanted tomake sure ... care was be-ing delivered in the mostappropriate way,” she said.
While they no longer of-fer a mobile health unit, hospital staff continue tooffer blood pressurescreenings, diabetes educa-tion and other services at avariety of area farm eventssuch as dealership openhouses.

Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easynest areas for birds. They alsorestrict air flow which leads topoor ventilation and moisturebuildup in the building.
The arched rafters createa more open barn allowing betterventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there areno places for birds to nest

Coffman said the hos-pital has focused on thehealth needs of the farm-ing and logging commu-nities since the HospitalSisters of the Third Orderof St. Francis came toChippewa Falls in June1885 at the invitation ofFather Charles Gold-smith, the rst and onlypastor in Chippewa Fallsat the time.
“The agricultural com-munity is near and dearto our sisters’ hearts,”she said, “and we want tocontinue to support themand grow with them.”
By that fall, the Rut-ledge home became thesite of HSHS St. Joseph’sHospital. The sale of hos-
pital tickets to loggers (a$5 ticket insured theholder for one year incase of sickness, includ-ing medicine) fundedbuilding additions.
In the 1970s, theHospital Sisters began amajor capital campaignto raise money for alarger facility. The newHSHS St. Joseph's wasformally opened in 1975along County Highway I.In 1976, the rst lay ad-ministrator was ap-pointed.

Henry reects on 40 years of organizing farm showsBy Steve HenryNorth Country Enterprises
Good memories: For a citykid who grew up in centralMinnesota and witnessed theannual dust storms of Dakota, topsoil ltering down aroundour home; for a city kid whowould walk a couple ofblocks with a metal containerto ll up with fresh milk fromour closest farmer; from theGrange building that was sur-rounded by a eld of cornand located next to our prop-erty; from the rst puff oncorn silk that three of us kidsjust had to try; to the Farmalltractor that Uncle Freemanallowed me to drive.
A farmer I should havebeen.
Later in life as I embarkedon 40 years of coordinatingfarm shows in Wisconsin,Iowa and Minnesota, I grewto more fully appreciate thehard work that farmers acceptand the dedication they haveas stewards of the land. Myappreciation doesn’t endthere.
I often think of the farmkids who go on to becomethe young men and womenthat our society needs. I be-came a staunch supporter ofthe many 4-H and FFAyouth that I had the privi-lege to assist in scholarshipjudging generated byWAXX Radio — clean cut, knowledgeable and alwayswilling to accept responsi-bility. And to this day, whenI see the blue-jacketed FFAmembers, they are our fu-ture. I trust they will makethis a better world in whichto live.
By accident I got into thebusiness of conducting farmshows. It was Northern StatesPower Co, that offered a“farm power” show duringthe spring of 1963. The showtook place at the NorthernWisconsin State Fairgroundin Chippewa Falls. That waswhen NSP focused on thesale of farm equipment re-quiring the use of electricpower.
Ten years later, once Lon-don Square Mall was com-pleted, the show moved toEau Claire. The mall aislesprovided sufcient room todisplay back-to-back exhibitbooths.
In 1975, NSP decided torid itself of the show. It wasthen that I became involvedand formed a family-ownedcompany called North Coun-try Enterprises. The EauClaire Farm Show was thenpromoted as being open to allcompanies and distributors offarm machinery, equipmentand ag products; not just toequipment requiring electric-ity.
With the sale of LondonSquare Mall, the farm showoccupied the vacated PrangeWay store. Another changeof venue became a realitywhen the Eau Claire IndoorSports Center was built in2002. The farm show becameone of the rst occupants of
the Sports Center on an an-nual basis.
One year later, The Coun-try Today became a co-sponsor of the Eau ClaireFarm Show. And now in2016, the second longestrunning regional farm showin Wisconsin will be fea-tured at a new location, theMenards Conference Cen-
ter, on March 8 and 9.What are some of the
changes witnessed over thepast 40 years of farm shows? The size of equipment hasgreatly increased and the ad-vent of the computer has of-fered our farmers access toupdated information andmarkets. The introduction oftillage equipment was an-
other giant step that I wit-nessed along with solar pan-els, GPS and now drones.
Regardless of the wealth ofinformation and new prod-ucts, the farmer remains
committed to grow foods de-sired, not only at home, buton the world market. Mythanks and respect go out tothe farm families who con-tinue to feed us. Thank you!
