Sexual harassment is defined as intimidation, bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors. This workshop will explore various types of sexual harassment and offer suggestions on how to handle it in the work setting. Sexual harassment violates Title Vii of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under both state and federal law, harassment of an employee on the basis of any of the protected characteristics, i.e., race, sex, religion, etc., is an unlawful discriminatory employment practice because it interferes with the terms and conditions of employment. While less overt than in previous years, this form of discrimination continues in our communities and may effect diverse populations disparately.

How does one become a competent interpreter? it is a common misconception to think that if one is bilingual one can automatically become an interpreter or a translator. However, it is not that easy. interpreters have to provide accurate and complete interpretations. This is more than exchanging words from one language to another. interpreters (and translators) must have a strong command of the target and source languages and must understand the context of how culture, idioms and a person’s register affect the delivery or intent of the speaker. included in this presentation will be the distinction between interpreters and translators, definitions of common modes of interpretations, list of professional organizations, tools for research, types of interpreters and translators, employment opportunities and outlook as well as the need for continuing education.
