The following students were named to the Dean's List for the Spring 2015 semester at Grove City College. Students eligible for the Dean's List have a GPA of 3.40 to 3.59; for the Dean's List with Distinction a GPA of 3.60 to 3.84 and for the Dean's List with High Distinction a GPA of 3.85 to 4.0. Kassaundra Funch was named to the Dean's List with Distinction. Kassaundra was a freshman Music Educa-tion major. We’d ask “Who could spit watermelon seeds the fur-thest?”

They’d answer “Lets give it a try!”

We’d wile the time awayWith each kid giving it a try

Then we’d head out to the pasturePutting small fireworks in an old cow pie

We’d light them up and runAnd watch the pieces fly

We didn’t wear the best of clothesAs many pieces didn’t pass us by

Then a variety of food awaited usIncluding cookies of every shape and sizeGood manners were instantly forgotten

Which for sure was no surprise

Later were large fireworks by the adultsFor us young kids to admire

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Runoff” (R) -- Simple coun-try living isn’t so picture-per-fect for the Freeman family. Their farm is suffocating, a big agro-business has its hands around their throats and poisonous chemicals in their lungs. While fi nances could destroy the farm, wife and mother Betty (Joanne Kelly) has an opportunity to keep things afl oat by accepting a job illegally dumping chemi-cals into the town creek. While the drama plays out re-alistically in the beautiful set-ting, it’s made clear that toxic chemicals lurk in every as-pect of their lives. While the action feels true and ground-ed, writer/director (and for-mer biochemist) Kimberly Levin effectively punctuates the story with points related to pollution, family, health care and business -- all with-out preaching to the audience.

“White God” (R) -- Fed up with their inhumane treat-ment, all of the dogs begin an uprising. Led by a loyal mutt who was abandoned by its owners, this dog army is surprisingly effective and a real threat to two-legged civ-ilization. Thirteen-year-old Lilli (Zsofi a Psotta) is forced to give up her dog, Hagen, because the law hates mixed-breed dogs. Their separation is heartbreaking. When they meet again, they’re on oppo-site sides of a war. (Important note: This is a totally serious and emotional live-action movie where the dogs don’t talk.)Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo can get an amaz-

ing performance out of a ca-nine. I feel like I also should praise the dog-actor, but does he know he’s acting? He’s just a dog doing dog stuff. Some movies use space-age motion-capture technology to make their animal-characters do all the right emotive stuff. This movie gets it right with just a really good dog.

“Comet” (R) -- Dell and Kim-berly (Justin Long and Emmy Rossum) are destined for each other, in a way ... or sev-eral ways. This ambitiously structured love story follows a semi-cute couple through their fi rst fl irtations to break-ups and getting back together. Throughout the many jumps in time, there are speeches and anxieties about the nature of love. Then we see the same two people again, but experi-encing a different side of love in a parallel universe where they are a little different, but still romantically entangled. The whole thing might work if it was anchored by power-ful screen-couple chemistry, but it’s not.

“3 Hearts” (PG-13) -- This French triangular drama takes a pretty foreboding look at a story of star-crossed love. Marc and Sophie (Benoit Poelvoorde and Charlotte Gainsbourg) have an instant connection when they acci-dentally meet on the streets of a provincial town in France. They make a date to meet again, but circumstances intervene and they go their separate ways. Later, Marc marries a swell gal named Sylvie (Chiara Mastroianni), and then learns that Sylvie is sister to Sophie, the one who got away. Harsh tones and meaningful glances ensue.

Ethel D. Kappus Ethel D. Kappus of Eden, NY died Monday, June 29, 2015 at age 90. She was born January 18, 1925 in Lackawanna, NY. She was a daughter of late Max. A. and Anna Sickau. She had a life-long dedica-tion to the St. John’s Com-munity Church in Eden. Alongside her husband; the late John W. Kappus, she ran the Kappus Family Farm on Shadagee Road. Ethel handled the book keeping in a precious and meticu-lous manner. She will be remembered for her flower and vegetable garden. Be-sides her parents, Ethel is predeceased in death by her loving husband John W. Kappus, a brother; Max-well Sickau, 2 sisters; Elma Kaufman and Viola Ander-son. She is survived by three sons; Kenneth (Patrice) Kappus, William (Nanette) Kappus and John (Kathy) Kappus, a sister; Edna Bra-man, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends called at the Laing Funeral Home and a fu-neral service was held at St. John’s Community Church. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Scholarship Fund or Eden Emergency Squad. * On July 29, 1958, Con-gress passes legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Ad-ministration. NASA was created in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of the fi rst satellite, Sputnik I.
