METHOD STATEMENT Cavity drain system to vault

165 Barnsbury Road, N1 0EP October 2017

1.0 Introduction This documents accompanies an application for approval of details reserved by conditions 3, 4 and 5 related to Listed Building Consent ref. P2017/1863/LBC, submitted to the Local Authority, and it should be read in conjunction with attached drawings 738.270-277. 2.0 Specification of the cavity drain system The existing vault is to be fully waterproofed with a cavity drain system supplied and installed by Delta Membrane Systems Ltd. The following products are proposed: Walls: 8mm Delta-PT LATH studded polyethylene membrane Floor: Delta KOSTER NB1 cementitious waterproofing slurry 3.0 Installation method Waterproofing layers: Delta-PT LATH sheets to be installed vertically to walls and to underside of vaulted ceiling, fixed to existing concrete walls/ceiling with Delta-PT fixing plugs at 250mm vertical and horizontal centres (see brochure below for details). Overlapped joints to be facilitated with a non-meshed section. Delta drainage channel to be fitted to the perimeter of all rooms, i.e. at floor-to-wall junctions, to collect surface water from the wall cavity. The channel is to be fixed in place by a concrete or blockwork upstand (refer to drawing 738.277 for details). The water from the channel is to be discharged to the existing inspection chamber in the vault, via Delta Kessel Staufix Backwater non-return valve, to reduce the risk of foul water backing up into the cavity drain system. The floor of the vault is to be waterproofed with Delta KOSTER NB1 cementitious slurry, a thin coating applied directly onto the existing concrete floor. Finishes: Walls are to be finished with gypsum plaster applied in two coats: 1st coat of 6mm pushed into dimples of the Delta-PT LATH membrane, and 2nd coat of 9mm. Floor to be finished with 50mm cement screed on top of Delta KOSTER NB1 cementitious waterproofing slurry, then boarded up with either plywood or chipboard.

DELTA®-PT DELTA®-LATH

Insulates and isolates damp and contaminated walls, vaults, and basements. The Guaranteed Solution.

The The ‘Original’‘Original’WWaterpraterproof Membroof Membrane Systemane System

DELTA®-PT insulates dampstructural surfaces and alsoprovides a bonding base forgypsum plaster, lime plasterrender and reinforcedshotcrete wall finishes.

The ProblemOld buildings often have dampness inwalls and other inside surfaces due toinadequate or defective waterproofing.Rewaterproofing of an existingfoundation wall is usually expensive - orimpossible when outside access is limitedby neighbouring structures. The damagemust therefore be repaired from theinside: by installing a new masonry shellcovering the damp inner surface. However, this is not a cure-all as the newshell too will soon become humid bycontinuing dampness migration from thestructure - and takes up considerablespace within the structure.

The Solution

DELTA®-PT – the watertight dimpledsheet with an integrated mesh beddingfor the inside surface finish. Its 8 mmstud structure on one side provides anair gap which ensures continuousventilation and full-surface drainage toremove incoming moisture.

The rugged HDPE mesh on the otherside provides secure bonding with avariety of surface finishes includinggypsum plasters, lime cement rendersand (using steel mesh reinforcement)reinforced shotcrete.

DELTA®-PT in UndergroundStructures> TunnelsThe unsecure inside surfaces of thetunnel is first removed and levelled. Thetunnel is then lined with DELTA®-PT(installed with the studded side againstthe structure).

The stud design provides full surfacedrainage capacity. Incoming water isredirected to take-off pipes below. A steelreinforcing cage installed on the meshside of the DELTA®-PT sheet provides thebase for the shotcrete finishing layer.

Examples of the many tunnelssuccessfully renovated with DELTA®-PTinclude the Vienne, Clelles and Sorbièresrailroad in France, the Wipking tunneland the Filisur pressure shaft inSwitzerland and the Rehberg,Büdenholz and Brachbach tunnels inGermany.

In the Brachbach tunnel project, DELTA®-PT was installed over a quick-drying shotcrete levelling layer toprovide full-surface drainage.

The inward-facing mesh provided asecure bed for application of the innershotcrete shell.

> Public transport SystemsDELTA®-PT‘s combination of drainagecapacity and mesh bedding is alsoideally suited for applications inunderground railway construction.

Some examples of DELTA®-PTunderground station renovation projects:In Great Britain, the Oval, Clapham,Tooting Broadway and Tooting Becunderground stations in London: InSpain, the El Clot L1 Pca. Espanya, ElClot L2, Tres Torres metro stations andSabadell main station in Barcelona.

> Underground parking GaragesAn example from Taiwan - the FarEastern Plaza parking garage facility inthe city of Taipeh.

In this application DELTA®-PT’s drainagecapacity eliminated the need for costlylarge-scale waterproofing measures.

FINISHING WORKSPLASTERINGDelta-PT should be plastered with either:

• ‘Whitewall’ plaster

• Carlite Bonding.

A 6mm scratch coat must be applied and allowed to set beforeapplying the next coat, in accordance with in BS 8481: 2006, BS EN13914 -2 : 2005 (and / or the appropriate Agrément Certificate). The standard of installation should comply with the requirements ofBS 8000-10 : 1995.

The plaster should be a minimum total depth of 15 mm.

Where a sand-cement mix is to be used internally, two coats areapplied and finished with a 3 mm thick gypsum-based skim coat.

A further plaster option is Roundtower Natural Hydraullic Lime Plaster- seek advice from Delta.

RENDERING EXTERNALLYWhere Delta-PT has been used externally it must be rendered with acement-lime-sand (1:1:6) render applied in three coats to a totalthickness of 20 mm using the procedures defined in BS EN 13914 -1 :2005. The standard of installation should comply with therequirements of BS 8000-10 : 1995.

The render should be applied in three coats with seven to ten daysbeing allowed between coats.

Due to the difference in thermal characteristics between Delta-PT andthe render, expansion joints through the render to the membranemust be trowelled in along each lap joint to reduce the possibility ofcracking. These joints must be filled with a suitable flexible polymer-based sealant.

Alternatively, polymer modified render should be applied in twocoats. The render is polymer/fibre modified, and eliminates the needfor extensive expansion joints, other than what is required to meetbuilding regulations.

A 5 mm ventilation gap at the top, and at least 10 mm at the bottomshould be left to assist the ventilation of the air-gap behind the Delta-PT membrane. Delta-PT profile is secured to the membrane andsubstrate to maintain these gaps.

DRY LININGA Bonding plaster to BS EN 13279-1: 2005, is mixed and applied invertical strips over the fixing centres and in bands along the top andbottom of the membrane. The plaster dabs are applied to a minimumthickness of 8 mm, and should cover a minimum of 50% of themembrane.

Gypsum plasterboard to BS EN 520: 2004, or similar dry lining boardscovered by Agrément Certificate, are pressed onto the plaster dabs andjointed in the usual manner. Temporary spacers approximately 20mm to 25 mm high are positioned under the dry lining to support itduring the curing period.

DECORATIONOnce the plastered, dry-lined or rendered surface has dried, thesurface can be painted or wallpapered using traditional methods andmaterials.

DELTA-PT

DELTA®-PT has beenspecially designed withdamp control in mind.Dampness, which isfound in many olderproperties, can beeasily controlled usingDELTA®-PTor DELTA®-LATH.

The MaterialDELTA®-PT is a special high performancepolyethylene membrane which isextruded into a series of studs. The purpose of the studs is to create acontinuous air gap behind thewaterproof membrane. On the face ofthe membrane a welded mesh allowsplasters and renders to bond efficientlyto achieve dry and durable finishes.DELTA®-PT is watertight, resistant to highand low temperature extremes, chemically resistant to acids, alkalis, oiland solvents and is approved for use indrinking water applications.

Constant Ventilation forPermanent Dry FinishesThe 8 mm stud design of DELTA®-PTprovides a continuous air gap whichserves two purposes. Firstly to isolate thedamp wall from the new plaster anddecorative finishes and secondly to allowventilation of the wall for permanentdampness control.

Ventilation can be achieved by using theDELTA®-PT profile or the ‘air gap’ can bevented externally via passive air vents.

Ventilation gaps located at both top andbottom of the system allow circulationfor this purpose.

The DELTA®-PT PROFILEThe DELTA®-PT PROFILE can be used atboth the upper and lower edges of themembrane. The profile has ventilationslots incorporated to ensure thatoptimum ventilation is achieved. Theprofile section also acts as a guide forplaster or render coats.

DELTA®-PT can also be used as a drainedcavity in conjunction with the sealedsystem 500. See separate brochure.

Installation of DELTA®-PTDELTA®-PT sheets are installed vertically.Overlapped joints are facilitated with anon-meshed section, which is availablealong one edge of each sheet. The sheetis secured to the substrate with DELTA®-PT FIXING PLUGS at 250 mm verticaland horizontal centres.

The transparent sheet allows easylocation of fixings so that the brick orstone can be identified from the mortarjoints. Ventilation gaps can be used atfloor and ceiling level to ensure theoptimum air circulation.

DELTA®-PTprovides a full range of options forinternal finishes which include CarliteBonding, Tarmac Whitewall, 1.1.6 cementlime sand render or dab fixed plasterboard or Roundtower Natural HydraullicLime Plaster. (Contact our TechnicalDept. for separate advice)

Plasters and renders should be trowelapplied in two coats. The first coat ispushed into the dimples, and givingcover over the mesh of 6mm. This islightly scratched and allowed to drybefore the second coat of 9mm isapplied. Skim finish plaster can be usedin the normal way.

When dab fixing plasterboard theadhesive dabs are applied directly overthe fixing heads. The adhesive dabsshould cover 50% of the area. Theboards are then wedged at the bottomand offered up to the dabs.

DELTA® is a registered trade mark of Ewald Dörken AG, Germany

DESIGN DATAGENERAL – VENTILATED SYSTEMDelta-PT is satisfactory for use as a support for a dry lining fixed byplaster dabs, or for replastering/rendering, over internal walls of alltypes of construction, in the following situations:

(a) Existing damp walls not under hydrostatic pressure

(b) In conjunction with a remedial dpc system where the walls havea high salt content and/or it is necessary to complete the installationimmediately without allowing a period for initial drying in accordancewith BS.6576 : 2005

(c) Over a wall which has a friable or painted surface, iscontaminated with oil or mould, or has a high salt content

(d) Delta-PT is also satisfactory for use as a waterproof support forrender on walls in exposed external situations, and/or where thebrickwork has deteriorated

(e) When DELTA-PT is used as a substitute for DELTA-MS 500 and/orinstalled as a ‘Sealed System’ in accordance with BBA certificate No.00/3742, it may be deemed to be suitable for walls, vaulted ceilingsor archways or cellars in the following additional situations:

• Damp walls in underground situations subject to high groundwater levels, and perennial moisture

• On vaulted ceilings of archways or cellars subject to dripping water

• As a waterproofing or ‘tanking’ in areas subject to vibration

• The system is satisfactory for use as Type C (drained protection) inaccordance with BS.8102 : 1990.

FINISHING WORKSWhen the membrane is installed, the walls can be replastered asrecommended in the current Delta technical literature.

Where Delta-PT is installed internally and plastered, permanentdecoration, such as vinyl papers or oil paint, may be applied.Temporary permeable decoration (necessary when a remedial dpcinstallation is replastered conventionally) is not necessary when Delta-PT is used.

RESISTANCE TO WATER AND WATER VAPOUR

The membrane is water resistant and has a high resistance to thetransmission of water vapour. Consequently, when used internallywhere the surface is damp, there must be a flow of air across it.

RESISTANCE TO SALT TRANSFERThe system provides an effective barrier to the transmission of salts orother contaminants from the substrate.

IMPACT RESISTANCEDelta-PT, plastered, rendered or dry-lined, has a satisfactory resistanceto soft and hard body impacts.

WALL-MOUNTED FITTINGSWall-mounted fittings (apart from lightweight items such as framedpictures) should be fixed (using recommended proprietary fixings)through the membrane and lining board, plaster or render, to theloadbearing structure behind. Holes made in the membrane shouldbe filled with a flexible sealant before inserting the fixing.

DURABILITY

Under normal conditions of use, the product will provide an effectivebarrier to the transmission of salts, liquid water and water vapour forthe life of the structure in which it is installed.

DELTA®-PTprovides a full range of options forinternal finishes which include CarliteBonding, Tilcon Whitewall, 1.1.6 cementlime sand render or dab fixed plasterboard or Roundtower Natural HydraullicLime Plaster.

A 7-8mm scratch coat must be applied and allowed to set beforeapplying the next coat, in accordance with in BS 8481: 2006, BS EN13914-2 : 2005 (and / or the appropriate Agrément Certificate). The standard of installation should comply with the requirements ofBS 8000-10 : 1995.

A Bonding plaster to BS EN 14496: 2005, is mixed and applied invertical strips over the fixing centres and in bands along the top andbottom of the membrane. The plaster dabs are applied to aminimum thickness of 8 mm, and should cover a minimum of 50%of the membrane.

Gypsum plasterboard to BS EN 520: 2004, or similar dry lining boardscovered by Agrément Certificate, are pressed onto the plaster dabsand jointed in the usual manner. Temporary spacers approximately 20mm to 25 mm high are positioned under the dry lining to support itduring the curing period.

DECORATIONOnce the plastered, dry-lined or rendered surface has dried, thesurface can be painted or wallpapered using traditional methods andmaterials.
