El sábado 3 de mayo se realizó con gran éxitoel V Festival Cultural Británico (FCB), en elcentro de Surco. Hubo once presentaciones,cada una de ellas, representando a nuestrosdiferentes centros de enseñanza. Los númerosque se pudieron apreciar fueron de: magia,mimo, marinera, grupos de rock, cantantessolistas, entre otros. La animación estuvo acargo de profesores del centro de Miraflores,quienes hicieron participar al público convariados concursos. Como invitados especialescontamos con la presentación del show de laSanta Comedia, a cargo de Pataclaun.

Premiación Concurso de Cuento BreveEn estos últimos seis años hemos premiado la imaginación literaria infantil y juvenil en torno a nuestro ya conocido y reconocidoConcurso de Cuento Breve, organizado por la Biblioteca Británica. Esta aventura la iniciamos en el año 2003.

El día 7 de mayo, en una ceremonia muy emotiva, se premiaron a veinticinco niños y jóvenes de las categorías Kids y Juniors. Losganadores son:

Elección del Consejo Directivo2008-2009 del BRITÁNICOEl BRITÁNICO eligió a su nuevo Consejo Directivo para el período 2008-2009. El Consejo será presidido por la señora Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga,quien reemplaza al señor James McDonald. El señor McDonald ha concluidosu gestión luego de tres años en este importante cargo.

La nueva Presidenta del Directorio, señora Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga, acompañadapor el señor James McDonald.

Viaje a UKZohi Mejía, ganadora de la Beca a la Excelencia 2007-I, viajó a Londres este año y nos cuenta su experiencia.

Unforgettable LondonI had a wonderful time in London. This experience changed my life forever.I will never ever forget the places I visited and the people I met. My landladywas very hospitable and generous; from the moment I arrived, she mademe feel at home.

London is a fascinating city; I loved travelling by underground and goingsightseeing everyday. I met students from all over the world there andmade very good friends, in spite of cultural differences. We used to havegreat fun together, especially at night. I really felt independent and freein London...

Sometimes, the weather was freezing but it just made my visit even moreexciting as you don’t see lightning nor heavy rain in Lima!

I’d like to thank the BRITÁNICO for giving me the opportunity of travellingabroad for the first time and for the best holidays I’ve ever had.

En la ceremonia, “El ratón que se comió la mitad de la luna” y “Mariposa de colores” fueron escenificados por excelentes intérpretes.

También, se realizó la presentación de la primera edición del libro: “Concurso Cuento Breve: ganadores 2003-2007”. La obra fuepresentada por la señora Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga, Presidenta del Consejo Directivo del BRITÁNICO. En este libro se publicanveinticuatro cuentos ganadores, entre los años 2003-2007.

Además, fueron invitados al evento los jóvenes escritores de los años anteriores; ellos se llevaron a casa un ejemplar del libro, elcual está lleno de gratos recuerdos.

La oportunidad que estabaesperando…Karol Yalta

Estudiar en el BRITÁNICO hasido sin duda una de lasmejores experiencias que hevivido, y ganar la Beca a laExcelencia fue una prueba másde que elegí el lugar correctopara estudiar inglés.

En el BRITÁNICO aprendí elinglés de una manera muydidáctica; asimismo, recibí

información sobre la cultura inglesa. Antes de acabar elavanzado, ya tenía pensado dar el FCE y desde que supe queel BRITÁNICO otorgaba esta beca siempre soñé con ser unade las ganadoras.

Me preparé mucho para el examen y cuando publicaron losresultados obtuve una A. El día que se anunció que todos losque cumplíamos los requisitos para la beca viajaríamos alReino Unido, sentí que al fin mi sueño se había hecho realidad.

Para terminar, quiero agradecer al BRITÁNICO por darme estaoportunidad de perfeccionar mi inglés y poder visitar un paíscon una excepcional historia y cultura.

Cuando dijeron que la había ganado... simplemente tuve unasensación muy gratificante.

Ahora que ya han pasado unas semanas luego de la premiación,me puedo dar cuenta de que todo el esfuerzo que hice en elBRITÁNICO rindió sus frutos. Ha sido un largo viaje desde elprimer día que ingresé a esagran aula del BRITÁNICO deLos Jardines. Allí fue dondesupe con certeza que mejoraríami nivel de inglés; hecho quese reflejó en el desarrollo de micarrera.

Durante ese t iempo deaprendizaje, fueron mis profesores los que me animaron arendir el FCE, ya que con dicho certificado tendría mayoresposibilidades de crecimiento profesional; gracias al apoyo demi familia y amigos pude prepararme para tal desafío.

Tuve la satisfacción de obtener una calificación más queaceptable y la emoción de recibirla de parte de las máximasautoridades del BRITÁNICO fue muy grande. Sin embargo, misorpresa fue mayor cuando se anunció que todos los quecalificamos seríamos merecedores de la beca, realmente eraun sueño hecho realidad.

Finalmente, no puedo dejar de agradecer al BRITÁNICO poresta magnífica oportunidad, que permitirá no solo mejorarmi nivel de inglés, sino también ampliar mis horizontes encada faceta de mi vida.

ELT Teaching Practice IIEl día sábado 24 de mayo se llevó a cabo la segunda práctica de enseñanza de los alumnos del curso ELT (English LanguageTeaching). En esta oportunidad la actividad tuvo lugar en los centros de San Isidro y San Borja, y contó con la participación deestudiantes de diferentes centros de enseñanza.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

We always talk about the Seven Wonders, but very few peoplecan name them if you ask them to. It’s not very clear whooriginally compiled the list of the Seven Wonders of the AncientWorld (or the Seven Ancient Wonders), nor when it was firstproposed. What we know is that the list comprised the sevenmost impressive monuments of the Ancient World and thatthe earliest surviving version of a list of seven wonders was

compiled by Antipater of Sidon, who described the structuresin a poem, around 140 BC.

But, why seven? This number was chosen because the Greeksbelieved it to be “magical”. The list comprises:

1. Great Pyramid of Giza2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon3. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

4. Colossus of Rhodes5. Mausoleum of Maussollos atHalicarnassusStatue of Zeus at OlympiaLighthouse of Alexandria

Unfortunately, the Great Pyramid ofGiza is the only one of the SevenWonders of the Ancient World thatis still standing.

The New Seven Wonders werechosen by a worldwide poll thatwas organised by the private New7 Wonders Foundation. The winnerswere announced on July 7, 2007(07/07/07) in Lisbon, Portugal andthey are (in alphabetical order):

The Seven Wonders of Peru were also chosen by a poll, thistime organised by a local newspaper, “El Comercio”. Thecontest came to a close on 25th March at a ceremony held atthe newspaper's headquarters and these are the chosenwonders:

1. Los Baños del Inca, also known as hot springs or Inca Baths- Cajamarca

2. El Valle del Colca or the Colca Canyon - Arequipa3. Los Frailones (The Friars) stone forest, also known as the

Stone Monks - Cajamarca4. The Kuélap Fortress - Amazonas5. The Huayllay Stone Forest - Pasco6. Alto Mayo Valley - San Martin7. The Gran Pajatén - San Martin

The ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu didn’t take part inthe contest because it was considered an Honorary Wonderby the organisers.

Enhancing our Students’Listening SkillsCésar Arana Winder, Camacho Teacher

Fifteen out of twenty teachers at our Camacho branchenthusiastically attended our first ever round-table meeting. Our head of centre, Ms Martha Diaz, moderated this one-hour session in which all the teachers discussed the best waysto handle and adapt listening activities in the classroom,depending on our students’ levels and particular needs.

About a month before this session was held, a number ofteachers had given several practical ideas in writing for listeningtasks, which had then been organized onto a hand-out andtried out in the Camacho classrooms during the month ofApril. The result? Not only were most ideas reported to workeffectively, but several suggestions came up during the round-table session… so, it is time to work on them!

Nowadays, people have forgotten the importance of reading.In my personal opinion reading is a pleasure because we canknow about other countries and cultures without travellingand we can also be transported to other epochs.

In the SAC we can find a variety books for all ages and weare able to choose different topics. Last month I read a bookcalled “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson and hadto talk about it to the rest of my classmates.

It was a good experience because I could see how I expressedmy ideas using my own words; I didn’t need to memorizeanything. I could also see how I have improved in mypronunciation.

If your answer is “YES”, congratulations, but if it is “NO”, letme tell you, it isn’t true. I thought the same, however, everyday we read a lot; from a message to a news item on theinternet. From my experience, reading isn’t only importantfor being well-informed, but also to learn and enrich ourvocabulary. Next, I want to share with you some advice thathas been useful for me:

First of all, you must know, reading is not a torture; it’sa fun activity which can keep you amused.Then, choose what kind of genre catches your attention.For example you have got drama, romantic, spy, fantasy,etc.Select a book for your level and little by little your readingwill be increasing.Don’t look up the new words, try to understand them bythe context; only use a dictionary after that or ask yourteacher to be sure.Do set up your “personal dictionary” and practise it, inyour writing and in your speech.Don’t be quiet, share your experience with your friendsand tell them about your readings.

That way, you’ll become an active reader!... Good Luck!

Break a leg… on thestageJuan Allauca, San Borja Teacher

Just as all roads lead to Rome, there are many ways to teachskills in English. What is more, acting is one of the mostversatile activities for integrating skills and improving thestudents’ competence.

Bearing this in mind, my advanced 5 and 6 students and Icame up with the ambitious project of performing a theatricalplay in three acts and the first choice was Macbeth by W.Shakespeare.

Despite the tremendous challenge of assigning roles to everyactor, rehearsing in the auditorium, going over the originaltexts, putting up posters and characterizing the whole group,we did achieve all our aims during the show.Our public performance in the auditorium was a successbecause of the dedication and enthusiasm shown by the castand the support of head and deputies in our centre.

After the performance, I am convinced it is feasible to spiceup lessons and aim high by making our students break aleg… on the stage.

Workshop in Los JardinesMaría Cristina Tello, Los Jardines Deputy Head of Centre

On April 22nd, an interesting workshop was held in LosJardines, the topic was “How to exploit the Cutting EdgeElementary CD ROM”. This presentation was run by twoexperienced teachers: Fátima Chumbes and Carola Acosta.We were very pleased to receive more than 100 enthusiasticstudents, most of them from Basic 01, in two different shifts(morning/afternoon).

In March, BRITÁNICO Lima teachers were encouraged tocontinue preparing projects to help students develop theirdifferent skills. I decided to work with Basic 2 students at7:40 pm. It was a pronunciation project which dealt withdiphthongs. The objective of this activity was to make mystudents aware of the existence of the combinations of lettersthat form diphthongs so that they can pronounce them wellevery time they say a word. They first practice with one-syllable words like toy, now, etc. as they were in a veryelementary level. It was a 5-minute practice at the end ofeach class for a week until they could produce and identifythese sounds. Their litmus test was to go in front of the classin pairs and try to identify the diphthongs their classmatesproduced. Students were involved in this activity all the time,and they were willing to be in front of their classmates andshow that they had achieved the objective.
