BE MINDFUL- STUDENTS PRESENT

The intersection of Rt. 62 and Schoolview Road, in the Town of Eden, certainly sees its fair share of traffic once the school year begins. During certain times of the day, there can be any number of students attempting to cross the road either at the intersection or at the cross-walk on Rt. 62. Be mindful. Don’t pass on the shoulder in the school zone. New signs have been posted to remind you to stay in your lane. Within the next few months, the NYS Department of Transportation will install an advanced left green arrow on Rt. 62 in the southbound lane at this intersection. This will allow a number of southbound ve-hicles to turn left before the northbound traffic can proceed. In addi-tion, the school zone on Rt. 62 will be marked by flashing beacons in-dicating a 25 mph speed limit. These beacons will flash when school is in session or during a special event involving children. This past spring, a lower speed limit was also approved on Schoolview Road. The Eden CSD would like to thank the Town of Eden, the NYS Depart-ment of Transportation and the County of Erie Department of Pub-lic Works Division of Highways for their time and effort in reviewing these requests and their subsequent approval. Now it is your turn. Be mindful. Slow down. Students are present.

Sugar Alcohols Aren’t Sugars or AlcoholDEAR DR. ROACH: I re-cently was diagnosed as be-ing prediabetic and told to watch my sugar intake. So I now read the nutrition facts on packages. However, I am confused about the listed sugars. Sometimes the la-bel includes both “sugar” and “sugar alcohols.” For instance, a package can read “sugars 1 g” and “sugar alco-hols 11 g.” Would my sugar intake be 1 g or 12 g? What is the diff erence, and what should I avoid/limit? -- B.D.

ANSWER: First, congrat-ulations on reading labels. Th ere is a lot of good infor-mation to be found that can help you decide whether something is a healthy food for you. Th at being said, sugar alcohols are confus-ing.Sugar alcohols have nothing to do with the type of alco-hol in beer, wine or spirits, and they aren’t sugars ei-ther. A sugar alcohol, such as sorbitol or xylitol, is an incompletely absorbed car-bohydrate. Since they are incompletely absorbed, you get only some of the calo-ries, and your blood sugar goes up less than if you had had the same amount of sweetness with regular sug-ar. A rough but reasonable rule of thumb is to count about half the grams of sug-ar alcohol as sugar, for the purposes of counting sugar grams. So in your example, it would be about 6.5 grams of sugar.You might wonder what happens to the unabsorbed sugar alcohol. It continues through your GI tract and acts as a laxative. Some peo-ple are very sensitive and will have diarrhea with just a little sugar alcohol; others tolerate more.

ANSWER: I see a lot of people with benign enlarge-ment of the prostate, and the most common symp-toms are inability to empty the bladder easily and hav-ing to urinate frequently. Persistent pain would make me concerned that the pros-tate enlargement is not the cause, or not the only cause, of the pain. I would think carefully about a bladder stone, chronic infl amma-tion of the prostate and in-terstitial cystitis as a short list.Chronic pelvic pain is a condition much more fre-quently encountered in women, and there are spe-cialists in evaluating just

that complex problem. Mencan get chronic pelvic paintoo, and I am concernedthat it oft en is assumed tobe due to the prostate, whenthere are many other possi-bilities. PICKS OF THE WEEK“Th e Age of Adaline” (PG-13) -- Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) survives a strange car accident while driving one night in 1938. A Very Authoritative Nar-rator tells us that due to some science-magic what-ever, Adaline stopped ag-ing, preserving her elegant blond 29-year-old form for all time. Tragic, I know.Aft er some years, Addy’s unaging beauty draws sus-picion, so she changes iden-tities every decade to keep her immortality a secret -- she’s kinda selfi sh. Th is keeps her from getting too close to anyone, or falling in love, until she falls in love with a guy whose father (Harrison Ford) recogniz-es her as the lost love of his youth.Th e fi lm goes for that dreamy, timeless, starlit moody look, and achieves it across diff erent time pe-riods. It all looks good, but the story feels under-cooked. Th ings limp along at times, and the ending feels a little off -kilter.

“Cyber-Seniors” (PG) -- How do you get a senior citizen from knowing noth-ing about the computers to deft ly hustling Facebook friends to check out their latest Youtube video? Very patiently. Th at’s one lesson in this charming documen-tary about a group of retir-ees paired with teen volun-teers who teach them how to use the Internet. When one senior posts her own cooking video to YouTube, it starts a contest among the old folks to see who can get the most “hits” online. While at fi rst, the clue-lessness of the old folks is played for laughs, the real focus of the story comes from the new connections made and possibilities opened up. It’s not meant to be an instructional fi lm, but it does teach us a lot about

the generational gap: It sure is deep, but not too wide to cross.

“Beyond the Mask” (PG) -- An English mercenary, Will (Andrew Cheney), working for the British East India company, gets backstabbed by his employer and rein-vents himself as a masked vigilante, seeking revenge against his enemies who have relocated to the Amer-ican colonies just before the revolution. He teams up with an annoying Benjamin Franklin, who spouts popu-lar Benjamin Franklin say-ings because that’s how he talked, I guess. Will falls in love with a nice lady (Kara Kilmer) and starts to learn that the key to redemption isn’t vengeance, but good faith and Christianity. He still gets his vengeance,

though.

“American Heist” (R) --Frankie (Adrien Brody) served time for a crimethat he and his youngerbrother, James (HaydenChristensen), messed up.A free man again, Frankiegets together with his oldrobbery pals (Tory Kittlesand rapper Akon) and pullsJames in as a driver on theirnext job. James is trying tomake a real living and patchthings up with his girl (Jor-dana Brewster), but Frankiereels him in with guilt, andJames botches yet anotherrobbery.
