COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS

By Sam Struckhoff

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Aloha” (PG-13) -- Defense contractor Brian (Bradley Cooper) has to close an im-portant deal, face his past mistakes, fall in love, recon-cile with his ex-wife, learn about Hawaiian culture and stand up to the military-in-dustrial complex in this jumbled joyfest from Cam-eron Crowe (“Jerry MaGu-ire,” “Almost Famous”). While on business in Ha-waii -- his former home -- Brian is paired up with a perky Air Force liaison (Emma Stone). They are soon in love, but there are a bunch more subplots in the way, including ones with Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray, Rachel McAdams and John Krasinski. It’s always a wonderful sign when a famous director publicly apologizes to a star for casting her in his movie. The fi lm already had a pall over it on its premiere, since leaked Sony emails showed the studio was none too pleased with early looks at the movie.

“Where Hope Grows” (PG-13) -- Calvin (Kristoffer Polaha) had his chance in the majors, then choked under pressure and left the league in disgrace. Now he’s a washed-up alcoholic whose boozy antics have wrecked every relationship in his life, and his daughter (McKaley Miller) has taken the brunt of it. On his way to rock bottom, Calvin fi nds friendship with a grocery store worker nicknamed Produce (David DeSanctis, a young man with Down Syndrome in his fi rst act-ing role), whose endearing positivity is the opposite of

Calvin’s wallowing.Polaha and DeSanctis de-velop a real screen chemis-try, never seeming wooden or forced. While the movie has this interesting dynam-ic, the trajectory of Calvin’s soul is made clear pretty early on when it’s shown that Produce is a devout churchgoer and carries a Bible with him everywhere he goes.

“Two Days, One Night” (PG-13) -- After taking a medical leave from her job manufacturing solar panels, Sandra (Marion Cotillard) returns to fi nd that her job is up for a vote: her co-work-ers must decide whether Sandra is let go or if they keep their 1,000 euro an-nual bonus. Actually, they already decided to let San-dra go, but she pleads for a re-do, giving her one week-end to convince enough co-workers to change their vote. Cotillard brings an

amazing performancethat has already stirred upawards both abroad and inthe U.S.

“Citizenfour” (R) -- Thisfi lm is the most up-closelook we have at EdwardSnowden, one of the mostwanted and infl uential peo-ple of our day. A govern-ment contractor and com-puter-security specialist,Snowden leaked a mountainof classifi ed information that continues to reverber-ate through the global stage.Back in 2013, documenta-ry fi lmmaker and PulitzerPrize-winner Laura Poitrasstarted receiving anony-mous messages hinting athuge revelations related togovernment surveillance.Later, Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald startedmeeting with the enigmaticsource. This rare and engag-ing glimpse at a polarizingand still-relevant fi gure is worth checking out.

Press ReleaseTown of Eden, NY to utilize CodeRED Emergency Notification System

The Town of Eden, NY in Erie County on July 8th, 2015 has contracted with Emergency Communications Network to license its CodeRED high-speed notification solution. The CodeRED system provides Town Offi-cials the ability to quickly deliver messages to residents and businesses of the Town in targeted areas or the entire Town of Eden.

CodeRED® enables local government and emergency management officials to communicate time-sensitive, per-sonalized messages via voice, email and text messaging. It allows CodeRED Weather WarningTM to provide automated alerts to citizens in the path of severe weather just moments after a warning has been issued by the National Weather Service; My Daily CallTM for scheduling calls to check on at-risk individuals, including the el-derly, infirm and latchkey kids to improve communication and safety with their community.

Robert Stickney, Emergency Manager of the Town of Eden, cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone number database supporting them. “If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called.” One of the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly into the system’s database. This is an extremely important feature.

“No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included,” Stickney said, urging all individuals and businesses to log onto the Town of Eden’s website, www.edenny.gov, and follow the link to the “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” page. Those without internet access may call the Town of Eden Super-visor’s Office (716-992-3408), Monday through Friday (8 AM - 4 PM) to supply their information over the phone. Required information includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P.O. Boxes), city, state, zip code, and primary phone number, additional phone numbers can be entered as well.

All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

Stickney explained, “CodeRED allows geographically based delivery, which means street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. The system works for cell phones too, but we need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages.”

Stickney stated, “CodeRED gives those people who want to be included an easy and secure method for inputting information. The data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes.” Questions should be directed to the Town of Eden’s Supervisor’s Office at 716-992-3408 or visit the FAQ on the Town’s website at www.edenny.gov.

SALOME’S STARSARIES (March 21 to April 19) A relaxed mood early in the week could give way to high-temperature disputes. The Aries Lamb should re-sist being pulled into heated quarrels that could really singe your wool.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Satisfy that practical ob-ligation fi rst, then you can feel free to indulge in your creative endeavors. Also, check for hidden or over-looked areas where repairs might be long overdue.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home is still the Twins’ major focus this week. But outside matters begin to take on added importance, espe-cially those involving possi-ble career moves. Stay alert for signs of change.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A travel plan might need to undergo some consider-able adjustment because of unexpected changes. Keep an open mind and let the facts guide you on how you want to handle this.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Playing cat and mouse with a matter you don’t really want to tackle wastes time, energy and, most important, an opportunity. Ask some-one with experience to help you get started.VIRGO (August 23 to Sep-tember 22) A shift in policy might not please you, but before you put up a “no go”

wall of resistance, exam-ine the circumstances. You might be quite pleasantly surprised by what you fi nd.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Yesterday’s cri-tiques about your methods might have already evolved into today’s praise for your achievements. Good for you. Now go on and continue to build on your credibility.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An occasion-al temperamental fl are-up might occur as you contin-ue to help get things back to normal. Stay with it. You should soon get some idea of where to take things next.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A neg-ative reaction to what you believe was a well-deserved request might mean that you need to reconsider your po-sition and make changes ac-

cordingly.CAPRICORN (December22 to January 19) There’s always room for someonenew at the Sea Goat’s table. And the someone new thisweek could bring a message you’ve been waiting a longtime to hear.AQUARIUS (January 20 toFebruary 18) A pile-on of personal matters this weekmight seem too overwhelm-ing to deal with. But han-dling them on a one-by-one basis could have you outfrom under it by the week-end.PISCES (February 19 toMarch 20) A friend mightneed your good advice re-garding a matter. Be sup-portive. But unless you canbe absolutely sure you haveall the facts, be careful aboutany suggestions you mightbe asked to offer.

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

* Soaking window decals with baby wipes will soften the adhesive, allowing you to remove a decal from glass more easily.

* “Potty training can be stressful for both child and parent. We tried many things, but in the end, you have to wait for the child to want to train. One thing that helped keep our daugh-ter motivated was a sticker chart. Be bought all kinds of stickers, and whenever she used the potty, she would get to choose a sticker to put on the chart. We would remark on how many stickers she had and the variety, which made her feel successful!” -- D.R. in Iowa

* “Last week, we found my son’s favorite sippy cup half-fi lled with sour milk under the couch. I washed it very well with hot, soapy water, but it still smelled bad. I stuffed the cup with newspaper pieces and

screwed the top back on. The newspaper absorbed the smell. It took about a week, but it’s back in use.” -- T.L. in Texas

* “My pup loves to ride in the car, and my car seats love his hair, too. Seems like it’s impossible to get the hair out! A vacuum didn’t work, so my neighbor suggested I use dish gloves. Just put a latex rubber glove on your hand and wipe over seats. A very lightly damped sponge

can work as well.” -- P.I. inWashington

* Lotion scent too strong?Purchase a pump bottle ofunscented lotion, and re-move about a third to a small bottle or even a plastic zip-per-top bag. Add your scent-ed lotion, and mix well by shaking the bottle or stirringwith a long stick. The scent will be diluted, and you canalways add more scented lo-tion or top off with the ex-cess unscented lotion.

MOMENTS IN TIMEBy JoAnn Derson

* On Aug. 28, 1877, Charles Stewart Rolls, co-founder (with Henry Royce) of the Rolls-Royce automobile company, is born in London. In 1900, Rolls reportedly was responsible for chang-ing the national speed limit from 4 mph to 12 mph.

* On Aug. 30, 1918, in Belfort, France, Colonel Arthur L. Conger plants a false operational order for an impending Allied attack in the wastebasket of a ho-tel where a German agent was on staff. As intended, the order was found and the Germans chose to withdraw from the area.

* On Aug. 26, 1939, the fi rst televised Major League baseball game is broadcast between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. There were only two stationary camera angles: down the third base line, and above home plate.

* On Aug. 29, 1949, in Ka-zakhstan, the USSR suc-cessfully detonates its fi rst atomic bomb. To measure

A Heartfelt Thank You Prayer

From the Family of Dorothy Bentley We would like to thank God for blessing our family with such an incredible outpouring of support from the Eden Community during this most difficult time. Your cards, phone calls, meals, donations and, most importantly, your continuous prayers, will never be forgotten. Your thoughtfulness will always be gratefully remembered and deeply appreciated. We also send our sincere gratitude to Orchard Heights and Eden Absolut Care for their love and compassionate care of Dorothy, to Hospice for their comforting care, and to Bill and Gabriel, of Laing Funeral Home, for going above and beyond to help our family. Very special thanks to Father Walter of Immaculate Conception Church for his numerous visits to Dorothy at Orchard Heights and Absolut Care of Eden, for his uplifting words and for providing a comforting funeral mass and burial service; for our prayer group and Immaculate Conception Church commu-nity - your uplifting prayers and songs continuously brought us comfort and strength. Words cannot express what your friendship meant to Dorothy. We were so blessed to have Dorothy in our lives for so many years. Her spirited love and kindness allowed her to be blessed with many friends in the Eden Community. Thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts, for being a part of both

her life and ours.With love
