  • Foundational Ski l ls

We officially started multiplication this week. Here are a few facts that we now know about it:

    1. Multiplication is the same as repeated addition or skip counting.

    2. Multiplication has equal groups.

    3. Any number multiplied by one is always that number (1 X a = a, a X 1 = a) a = any number

    4. Any number multiplied by zero is always zero ( 0 X a = 0, a X 0 = 0)

    5. The “X” means groups of. So the first factor in a multiplication sentence tells us how many groups and the second factor tells us how many are in that group.

    6. In a word problem, the word each means that we will need to multiply at least once.

    7. You can change the order of the factors and the product/answer will always be the same. Just remember, that the number of groups and how many are in each group is different.

The first weeks of school we were focusing on VCCV words. We are now working on VCV words such as super, paper, and later. These are also very common and it’s important to have a strategy to read these words, too. Here is how it works:

    1. Once we have determined that it is a VCV word, we say “first try before.” This means before the consonant.

    2. Where’s the vowel? It’s at the end (of the syllable).

    3. Long or short vowel sound? We always try long first.

    4. Read the word by syllables.

*We will focus on VCV words with short vowel sounds next (Ex. metal). You can find a chart for the VCV strategy for both the long and short vowels on the Language Arts page of our class website.
