It will focus on strategies that we’ve already learned and use them with specific numbers. We have the following strategies in our “bag of tricks” to solve division sentences: drawing groups (starting with the number of groups or the number in each group), repeat- ed subtraction sentences, number lines, arrays, bar mod- els, using related facts, and a multiplication table. At the end of the chapter, we’ll be working on those tricky two- step problems and order of operations. When we return in January we will continue working on division in Chapter 7. It will focus on strategies that we’ve already learned and use them with specific numbers. We have the following strategies in our “bag of tricks” to solve division sentences: drawing groups (starting with the number of groups or the number in each group), repeat-ed subtraction sentences, number lines, arrays, bar mod-els, using related facts, and a multiplication table. At the end of the chapter, we’ll be working on those tricky two-step problems and order of operations.

Escape Room Challenge

This month’s challenge was to get to Santa’s Workshop before the train left the North Pole.

There were five tasks that needed to be completed. Tasks included multiplication and divi-

sion, word search, mystery numbers, rhyming words, and a secret code. Each member of the

group had to complete the task correctly before the group could earn the puzzle piece and

move onto the next task.

At the end of the Challenge, we continued on with a STEM challenge. Groups were asked to

come up with a written plan to make the tallest Christmas tree out of green cups. Once the

plan was created and written down, the actual challenge began! Once completed, we added

red pom poms as decorations.

Pictures to follow at the first of the year! :)

Vacation Fun!

Over the vacation, it’s important that your child have some learning and reading time

so that s/he has a smooth transition back to school. On our Language Arts page of

the website is a reading log. Feel free to download and record your child’s reading.

Although it’s not required, it’s important to keep some routines in place so that

your child’s transition back to school after the holidays will be easier and s/he will

continue to progress as well! Better yet, record the books your child reads and fill

out the Read to Succeed log. Your child will earn a free ticket to Magic Mountain! :)

Also:

HONEY Research (on our class webpage)

Gather some fun facts for our Did You Know? board.

Do Accelerated Math, Freckle, or Reflex Math for a few minutes every day.

Go on to Clever and go to Google Classroom and answer some of the questions

posted.

Leader in Me

Our new goal for this trimester is to read 86 words correct per

minute. To achieve this goal, most of us need to increase the number

of words per minute by 3.5-4 words per week. While this is not a lot,

we still need to provide lots of practice and determination. I know that

every student has the potential to meet this goal. Our comprehension

and understanding of all types of materials are counting on it!

*SEAS: Just right speed, expression, accuracy, and shmooshing (chunking words and phrases)

Our lesson this week focused on leaders being organized and inspired by their physical environment inside and outside the classroom. Being organized helps us stay focused, efficient, and free of stress and frustration. The class came up with many ways in which we strive to be organized: binders, desks, group boxes, student folders, book drawers, number order for lines, desks, Chromebook cart etc., seat sacks, classroom library, tool boxes, whiteboard, graded paper files, and we’re pretty sure there’s probably more! What ways does your child help with organization at home?
