RightCare Barnsley winsprestigious HSJ Valuein Healthcare award

RightCare Barnsley is a new service forhealthcare professionals aimed at preventinghospital admission when not clinicallyrequired.

The service is run in alliance with BarnsleyClinical Commissioning Group (CCG) byBarnsley Hospital and South West YorkshirePartnership NHS Foundation Trust(SWYPFT), it provides a one stop shopco-ordination service for GPs and otherhealthcare professionals, helping people getthe treatment and care they need, so theycan avoid being admitted to hospital if thereare more suitable alternatives for theircondition.

There is a wide range of services available tosupport people and they are all now linkedinto RightCare Barnsley, so when a GP callsup, the team can assess, against that personsclinical needs, what is available and get thatorganised for the patient, often meaning theperson can stay at home, and freeing the GPup to care for other patients rather than betied up to secure services.

Over 1,000 patients whose care has beenco-ordinated through RightCare Barnsley

have avoided being admitted into hospitalover the past 10 months since the servicestarted.

The HSJ Value in Healthcare Awardsrecognises and rewards outstandingefficiency and improvement by the NHS.The awards continue to recognise excellentuse of resources but they also seek outexamples of demonstrable improvement inoutcomes, both within back office functionsand clinical initiatives.

Karen Kelly, Director of Operations atBarnsley Hospital, said: “RightCare Barnsleyensures that patients are receiving the rightcare in the right setting for them, ultimatelyimproving the overall patient journey. We are so pleased to hear that we havebeen shortlisted for this award and arevery proud that the service is getting thispublic recognition.”

The awards were a great evening ofrecognition and celebration for all theorganisations making steps to greatlyimprove efficiency and value, in bothoffice functions and clinical initiativesin healthcare.

RightCareBarnsley haswon the clinicalsupport servicescategory at the2016 HealthService Journal(HSJ) Value inHealthcareAwards, heldon 24 May atManchesterCentral,Manchester.

Governors are involved inmany aspects of the life of thehospital. One of the mostpleasurable is our role in thehospital Heart Awards. This staff awards schemerecognises individuals andteams of staff and volunteerswho perform over and abovewhat is expected of them. They are run every yearculminating in an awardsevening in June, withincredible support from staff.

A number of Governors joined a group of staff, volunteers and partnerorganisations on 22 April to score and shortlist the nominations in a numberof different categories. The quality of nominations was very high, making theshortlisting and scoring a difficult job. We had a highly enjoyable Heart Awardsevening, celebrating the hard work of staff and volunteers.

The hospital has regular unannounced quality visits to wards and departmentscarried out by a team with staff of different grades, and including at least oneGovernor. The principal role of Governors in these visits is to talk to patientsto get some feedback on the patient’s experience. Training in safeguardingand infection protection and control is required for Governors taking part inquality visits.

Other areas where Governors contribute their time and expertise includeworking with Barnsley Hospital Charity on events such as the Rainbow Dash andfundraising appeals such as the Tiny Hearts Appeal.

Governors have two key statutory roles, holding the Non-Executive Directors toaccount for the performance of the Board of Directors, and representing ourmembers and the wider community. Governors who are unpaid volunteers, also make a wider contribution to the hospital over and above theirlegal role.

Our role in representing our members and the wider community is achallenging one, and Governors are always keen to hear the views of theentire community the hospital serves. If you wish to speak to, or contact, aGovernor you can telephone Carol Dudley, Secretary to the Board and theCouncil of Governors, on 01226 431818, or [email protected] who will put you in touch with a Governor.

Although it isn’t part of the Governor’s role to investigate complaints we can giveadvice on how to raise a concern confidentially, through the correct channels.Very occasionally feedback to Governors may indicate a general problem whichGovernors will raise with the Board of Directors.

We take complaints seriously and use them to further improve the quality of thehospital’s services. It is always good, however, to receive compliments and if youare particularly pleased with your experience in the hospital please let BarnsleyHospital know either online or via staff during your time in hospital.

Joe Unsworth, Lead Governor

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust // June 2016 3newsBARNSLEYHOSPITAL

Hi Joanne, how would you describeyour role as a Co-opted Governor forBarnsley Hospital? As Co-opted Governor, I am able to speakup for staff who work within the trust andensure that it is safe, effective and efficient.I am also here to raise any staff issues thatmay arise through workforce issues, policies and finances and must ensure thatGovernors and the Trust Board are aware ofthe potential impacts that any new changesmay have. My role is to ensure that theTrust’s values are being upheld, standardsare being maintained and any concernsare raised at Board level. It’s like being ascrutiniser and ensuring that all systemsare working efficiently, effectively and safely.

The role can be challenging and I havefound it difficult at times, to switch into thisrole from my staff side role. However thetwo roles do have similarities and it is agreat way to understand the more intricateand challenging workings of the Trust.

What would you say are your favouriteparts of the role?I am relatively new to the post and haveonly attended a few meetings so far but it isclear to see that there are a lot of peoplewho care about how the hospital is run andtake the time to digest all the papers whichare sent out and question any anomalies. Itis lovely to work with and take an activepart in discussions with a different group ofpeople who have a different perspective onhealth care than perhaps frontline staff.Therole is challenging and interesting.

When were you nominated tobe Governor?I have been seconded into the role to coverfor a colleague, Rachel Hewitt, who is onmaternity leave for a year. This is great forgiving me the opportunity to say whether Iwould want to continue in the role andapply when a full vacancy becomesavailable. It’s a great opportunity to findout more about how the Trust works and bean active part of the scrutinising process, the trust’s processes and to ensure that thevalues are upheld.

What inspired or influenced your decisionto become a Staff Governor? When Rachel applied for the Governors roleit was something that I considered doingtoo. However, at that time I did not feel Icould commit in terms of the time andenergy required and having lots of otherroles, both in my working and personal life. However when Rachel asked if I wouldcover I thought it is a way to see if it issomething that I would want to do in thefuture and would give me a better insightinto the Trust’s workings. They also say ifyou want to influence and be an activeleader you have to challenge yourself andbe visible so it’s a great way to raise theprofile of therapy in the hospital too.

When you’re not busy with work what doyou enjoy doing in your spare time?I have two teenage girls which keep me verybusy, usually as a taxi service! When notdoing that I enjoy doing Zumba on a weeklybasis and going on hikes in the countryside, with a good pub at the end and a cold glassof wine or cider.

Lead Governorupdate

June 2016

Dear Colleagues, As we have now started the new financial year we wanted to take the opportunity to

contact Trust staff to thank them for their continued hard work and dedication to their

patients and the Trust over the past year.

The past financial year has proved to be a challenging one for the whole Trust, despite this

staff have remained positive, resilient and continued to provide outstanding care to the

people of Barnsley. The efforts of Barnsley Hospital staff does not go unnoticed by the Council of Governors and

it is very clear to us that staff live by the Trust’s values and visions, ensuring that patient

safety and quality care remains the top priority.

The Trust has an excellent reputation for employing caring and compassionate staff, a fact

that is often reflected in patient feedback, and this makes us proud to say we serve as

Governors for the hospital. The new financial year is set to be as challenging, if not more so, than this year but we

know that staff will continue to work together for the benefit of their patients.

Again, well done and thank you to all staff.

Kind regards Joe Unsworth, Lead Governor, on behalf of the Council of Governors.

Learning Disability teamwins innovation awards

The event was organised through theConnected Healthcare programme whichwas introduced by the Digital Media Centre, through Barnsley Council’s EnterprisingBarnsley business support programme andwas sponsored by Yorkshire and HumberAcademic Health Science Network (AHSN)and Tech North.

Our Learning Disability team waschallenged with helping to improve patientexperience through the use of digitaltechnology and media.Their idea for an appcame from the already existing ‘hospitalpassport’ which was created at BarnsleyHospital and is given to all vulnerablepatients. The hospital passport helps inassisting hospital staff to look after peoplewith learning disabilities and includesimportant information about the patient.

The hospital passport is currently in a paperformat but the new app will allow staff tocollect this information and data on a digitalplatform which will be more easilyaccessible for staff. The team workedalongside HMA and shared its knowledgeand expertise to successfully aid in thecreation of the new app.

The team was successful in winning twoawards; one in the peer vote category andanother from the panel of judges. They wona combined business support packagefrom Yorkshire & Humber AHSN andEnterprising Barnsley which will help themto develop their project plans.

Tracey Helliwell, Learning DisabilitiesLiaison Nurse, said: “This is a fantasticachievement for our team and our hospitaland we are extremely proud. It’s been a greatexperience to work with the design team atHMA and we are very excited to take ourhospital passport to a digital platform.

“It’s so important that, as staff, we canunderstand a patient’s everyday needs andwishes and the passport has already enabledus to recognise a person’s health and socialneeds, allowing us to adjust our careaccordingly. The app will allow us to takethis to the next level and it’s very exciting toknow that it will be developed andintroduced to Barnsley Hospital.”

Our Learning Disability team recently won two awards in the Digital Health DesignChallenge which took place at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley. Hi Katie, thanks for meeting with ustoday. First of all can you explain to uswhat the Information Governance andClinical Application Management (IGand CAM) Team does?Katie: Hi, good to meet you. Our teamprovides all the necessary governance, training, data quality, configuration andresolution support for the key electronicpatient systems within the Trust, along withensuring the security, integrity andconfidentiality of all patient and staffinformation.

Within the last 12 months the team has beensupporting the newly implementedElectronic Patient Record (EPR) systemLORENZO. Implementing an EPR is acomplex process and we are working veryhard to work with and support staff toovercome the challenges this presents and

similarly promote and share theopportunities and benefits of workingtowards becoming a paperless hospital.

Do you have an example of some of thework you do that you can share with us?Katie: Yes, I have many examples but a morerecent one that comes to mind is:We haverecently worked closely with and supportedthe outpatient team to review the way inwhich follow up appointments are bookedfor patients in a clinic setting on ourLORENZO system.

The aim was to provide patients with theirfollow up appointment date in person atthe time of their appointment, ratherthan through the post at a later date, promoting patient choice. We achievedthis by collectively reviewing the process,re-configuring LORENZO and providingtraining for all receptionists.

This required a great amount oforganisation, effort and team working toachieve and I am very proud of how theteam worked to achieve this.

How many team members are inthe IG and CAM team?Katie: We are a team of 20 staff members intotal. The team comprises four sub teams;Information Governance, ClinicalApplication Support, Clinical ApplicationTraining and Data Quality. Luckily we all geton really well and have a great workingrelationship. We have staff with expertise inmany areas and backgrounds so there isalways someone on hand to help if you arestuck with something.

Can you tell us about a majorachievement of the team?Katie: One of our recent successes was beingshortlisted for a Barnsley Hospital Heart

Award in the Team OutstandingAchievement category.

We also received a Heart Awards nominationfor facilitating the achievement of 95%mandatory training compliance forinformation governance training for theTrust.

We were absolutely delighted and it is realtestament to the hard work all the team putin. We had a great night celebrating at theHeart Awards event.

Thanks for meeting with us; it’s beengreat getting to know you!Katie: Thank you!
